Abstract:In this paper, vertically aligned PANI nanorod arrays were successfully prepared on GO nanosheets at low temperature via a dilute polymerization method, in which the GO nanosheets with abundant hydrophilic groups were employed to support the heterogeneous growth of uniformly-distributed PANI nanorod arrays. The acquired nanocomposite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). NH3 sensing performances of the as-prepared nanocomposite were carefully examined. With the help of the enhanced synergistic effect derived from the large number of p-n heterojunctions in the deliberately-designed microstructure, the device exhibited an enhanced response to NH3 vapor (14.63 at 50 ppm), wide dynamic range (1-6400 ppm), and fast response and recovery processes, in comparison to pure PANI nanofibers. The impact of the drop-coating amount of the sensing nanocomposite on the sensing performances was also investigated to find out the suitable amount for fabricating a high-performance ammonia sensor. Herein, the superior performances of the proposed well-organized microstructure make it an effective nanocomposite for gas sensing applications.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube and Polyaniline(Pani)composite for gas sensing were investigated in this paper.Pani coated multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWNT)was synthesized by means of in-sute polymerization and dielectrophoresis.The nano-composite sensor showed a 3.4 reversible resistance change to 10×10-6 NH3 with a response time of 15 s while the sensitivities of Pani film sensor is 1.9 in the contrast experiment.The results indicate that the nano-composite sensitivity and sensing dynamic are improved due to the nanostructure with ultra-high surface-volume ratio and good conductivity.The mechanism of sensitivity to NH3 of the sensor was also discussed.

Abstract:ZnO nanoparticles, nanorods and nanosheets were in-situ deposited on the interdigitated gold electrodes by hydrothermal treatment of electrospun nanofibers containing zinc salt precursors and seed-induced solution growth of ZnO. The nanostructured ZnO was further covered with polyaniline (PANI) via vapor phase polymerization of aniline or dip-coating with water-dispersible PANI to prepare ZnO/PANI nanocomposites. The morphology and structure of the nanocomposites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The electrical responses of the nanocomposites toward NH3 have been examined at room temperature, and the nanocomposite revealed much better gas sensing properties than ZnO or PANI alone. The morphology of the nanocomposites had a great effect on their sensing properties. Specifically, the composite of ZnO nanosheets covered with vapor phase polymerized aniline demonstrated optimal sensing performance, featuring high response magnitude (relevant resistance change of similar to 2150% towards NH3 as low as 10 ppm), ultralow limit of detection (similar to 5 ppb), good repeatability and excellent selectivity. It is proposed that the morphology and the interactions between p-type PANI and n-type ZnO are responsible for the highly desirable sensing properties of the nanocomposites. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Reduced graphene oxide-polyaniline hybrid: Preparation, characterization and its applications for ammonia gas sensing

Abstract:Here we present a useful ammonia (NH3) gas sensor based on reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-polyaniline (PANT) hybrids. PANI nanoparticles were successfully anchored on the surface of RGO sheets by using RGO-MnO2 hybrids as both of the templates and oxidants for aniline monomer during the process of polymerization. The resultant RGO-PANI hybrids were characterized by transmittance electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The NH3 gas sensing performance of the hybrids was also investigated and compared with those of the sensors based on bare PANI nanofibers and bare RGO sheets. It was revealed that the synergetic behavior between both of the candidates allowed excellent sensitivity and selectivity to NH3 gas. The RGO-PANI hybrid device exhibited much better (3.4 and 10.4 times, respectively, with the concentration of NH3 gas at 50 ppm) response to NH3 gas than those of the bare PANI nanofiber sensor and bare graphene device. The combination of the RGO sheets and PANI nanoparticles facilitated the enhancement of the sensing properties of the final hybrids, and pave a new avenue for the application of RGO-PANI hybrids in the gas sensing field.

Abstract:Nanocomposites of SnO2 nanosheets and polypyrrole (PPy) were facilely prepared and their gas sensing properties towards low concentration of NH3 have been investigated at room temperature. Vertically aligned SnO2 nanosheets were in situ grown on the substrates via hydrothermal treatment of electrospun nanofibers containing SnCl2 precursors at a low temperature (135 degrees C), and coated with PPy by vapor phase polymerization of pyrrole. The SnO2 nanosheets and the nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and high resolution transmission microscopy. The nanocomposite sensors exhibited much higher response magnitude towards NH3 than the sensors based on PPy alone. The effect of the type of doping acids and polymerization time of pyrrole on the sensing properties of the nanocomposites was examined. The nanocomposite sensors revealed sensitive (sensitivity of 6.2%/ppm in the range of 1-10.7 ppm of NH3, detection limit of similar to 257 ppb), selective and repeatable response to NH3, and the sensing mechanism has been explored. This work could provide references for the facile preparation of advanced gas sensors based on in situ grown nanostructured metal-oxide semiconductors and their composites. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Gas sensors for ammonia detection based on polyaniline-coated multi-wall carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Polyaniline-coated multi-wall carbon nanotubes (PANI-coated MWNTs) were prepared by in situ polymerization method. Field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the as-prepared PANI-coated MWNTs. Obtained results indicated that PANI was uniformly coated on MWNTs, and the thickness of the coatings can be controlled by changing the weight ratios of aniline monomer and MWNTs in the polymerization process. Sensors were fabricated by spin-coating onto pre-patterned electrodes, and ammonia gas sensing properties of the as-prepared PANI-coated MWNTs were studied. The results showed a good response and reproducibility towards ammonia at room temperature. In addition, PANI-coated MWNTs exhibited a linear response to ammonia in the range of 0.2–15ppm. The effects of the thickness of PANI coatings on the gas sensing properties were also investigated in detail. The results suggest a potential application of PANI-coated MWNTs in gas sensor for detecting ammonia.

Abstract:Porous and polycrystalline In2O3 nanotubes are prepared by layer-by-layer assembly on CNT templates and subsequent calcination (see figure). The as-prepared In2O3 nanotubes exhibit superior sensitivity to NH3 at room temperature, as well as a good reproducibility and short re sponse/recovery time. This novel approach presented herein can be extended to synthesize other metal oxide nanotubes such as NiO, SnO2, Fe2O3, and CuO.

Abstract:A novel ammonia (NH3) chemical sensor is presented with ultra-high response, good selectivity, fast response, and long-term stability using detecting layer of polyaniline/cupric oxide nanoparticles supported on three-dimensional nitrogen-doped graphene-based frameworks (PANI/CuO@3D-NGF) nanocomposite. The NH3 gas sensing response of the PANI/CuO@3D-NGF nanocomposite was studied by resistivity method in low concentration range of 50 ppb–100 ppm at room temperature. The PANI/CuO@3D-NGF nanocomposite was prepared through in situ polymerization of PANI on the CuO@3D-NGF with a high surface area. Morphological and structural analysis revealed that the ultrathin 3D interconnected graphene substrate maximizes the surface area. It is also shown that the CuO nanoparticles offer active adsorption sites for free NH3 molecule. The PANI/CuO@3D-NGF nanocomposite gas sensor shows the response of 930% to 100 ppm NH3 with an outstanding low detection limit of 50 ppb and an average response time of 30 s at room temperature. The excellent sensing performance of the PANI/CuO@3D-NGF nanocomposite was attributed to 3D interconnected porous structure, remarkable enhancement of charge carriers as a result of CuO@3D-NGF, and modified π-interactions between molecules.

A High-Performance Flexible Gas Sensor Based on Self-Assembled PANI-CeO2 Nanocomposite Thin Film for Trace-Level NH3 Detection at Room Temperature

Abstract:A resistive-type flexible ammonia (NH3) sensor was proposed and developed in this work, which was prepared by depositing polyaniline-cerium dioxide (PANI-CeO2) nanocomposite thin film on flexible polyimide (PI) substrate through in-situ self-assembly method. The effect of CeO2 nanoparticles on the polymerization of aniline was studied by comparing the morphological, structural and chemical features of the pure PANI and PANI-CeO2 nanocomposite, and the dynamic polymerization processes were also recorded and investigated. In this process, an interesting phenomenon was found that the protonation and oxidation degrees of PANI in PANI-CeO2 nanocomposite were improved significantly according to the XPS spectra analysis, which should be ascribed to the synergetic oxidation of CeO2 nanoparticles and ammonium persulfate (APS). Meanwhile, the NH3-sensing performances of the pure PANI and PANI-CeO2 film sensors were evaluated at room temperature (similar to 25 degrees C), which showed that the PANI-CeO2 film sensor possessed enhanced response, reduced recovery time, perfect response-concentration linearity, good reproducibility, splendid selectivity, remarkable long-term stability, ultra-low detectable concentration (16 ppb) and theoretical detection limit (0.274 ppb), and outstanding flexibility without significant response decrease after 500 bending/extending cycles. It was speculated that the excellent sensing performances should probably benefit from the gas-sensing enhancement effect of p-n junction, the improved protonation degree and modified morphology of PANI by the addiction of CeO2 nanoparticles. And, the high flexibility might originate from the flexible structure of PANI chains, and the good adhesion and nano-mechanical performance of PANI-CeO2 film. Besides, the effect of relative humidity on the sensing properties of PANI-CeO2 film sensor was also discussed and analyzed. Therefore, the proposed high-performance flexible PANI-CeO2 thin film sensor holds great promise for application into hand-held or wearable electronic devices for trace-level NH3 detection at room temperature. Abstract:A novel NH3 sensor enabled by two dimensional (2D) niobium carbide MXene (Nb2CTx) nanosheets-supported polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposite (PANI/Nb2CTx) with enriched three dimensional (3D) spatial structure was successfully developed to achieve ultrasensitive NH3 detection under humidity atmosphere. The 2D ultrathin Nb2CTx nanosheets with abundant hydrophilic groups exhibited excellent regulation effect on the polymerization of PANI nanofibers and highly enhanced the morphology of PANI/Nb2CTx nanocomposite. The surface elemental analysis of Nb2CTx nanosheets was characterized through XPS, and the morphology images, crystal structure and chemical composition of the as-fabricated samples were investigated by FE-SEM, TEM, XRD and FTIR. According to the test results, the as-developed PANI/Nb2CTx sensor exhibits superior selectivity, high sensitivity, low detection limit (20 ppb) and good long-term reliability toward 0.1-10 ppm NH3 with 87.1 % RH. Owing to numerous hydrogen bonds between PANI and Nb2CTx, humidity affects on the sensing properties of PANI/Nb2CTx sensor was effectively reduced. Finally, the gas-sensing mechanism has been systematically studied to illustrate the improved sensing properties combining p-n junction with hydrogen bonds. This research provides a novel PANI/Nb2CTx NH3 sensor with excellent gas sensing properties, which can open up a new way to explore the application potential of Nb2CTx-based nanocomposite in both atmospheric and breath NH3 detection.

Abstract:The graphene nanoplate (GN)-polyaniline (PANI) composite was developed via in-situ polymerization method and simultaneously assembled on interdigital electrodes (IDEs) at low temperature for ammonia (NH3) detection. The assembled composite sensor showed excellent sensing performance toward different concentrations of NH3, 1.5 of response value and 123 s/204 s for the response/recovery time to 15 ppm NH3. Meanwhile, an interesting supersaturation phenomenon was observed at high concentration of NH3. Pani Nanofibers-Supported Nb2ctx Nanosheets-Enabled Selective Nh3 Detection Driven By Teng At Room Temperature

Abstract:As a new member of the MXene family, two dimensional (2D) niobium carbide MXene (Nb2CTx) holds a promising potential in gas detection due to the abundant surface terminated groups and large specific surface area. In this work, a selective NH3 sensor based on polyaniline (PANI) nanofibers-supported Nb2CTx nanosheets (Nb2CTx/PANI) directly driven by a facile triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is proposed to provide a possible method for enhancing the NH3-sensing response. In addition, the gas sensing properties have been optimized by regulating different spray volumes of Nb2CTx nanosheets. Test results demonstrate that the NH3-sensing response and the response speed of the Nb2CTx/PANI-2 sensor have been evidently improved, indicating a good linear response toward a wide sensing range of 1-100 ppm NH3 at room temperature (similar to 25 degrees C) under 87.1 % relative humidity (RH). Moreover, the influence of high humidity on gas sensing response of the Nb2CTx/PANI-2 sensor has been efficiently reduced due to the occupied active sites for water adsorption caused by intermolecular hydrogen bonds between PANI and Nb2CTx. Finally, mechanism of the enhanced gas sensing properties has been further investigated, which should be mainly attributed to the gas sensing improvement effect of p-n junction. This work is expected to offer a useful reference for the development of high-performance Nb2CTx/polymerbased gas sensors.
Ammonia Gas Sensor Based on Aniline Reduced Graphene Oxide

Abstract:Here we demonstrate a promising gas sensor based on aniline reduced graphene oxide (RGO), which is fabricated through drop drying RGO nanosheets suspension between the electrode arrays to create conductive networks. RGO, as the sensing materials, which is prepared via the chemical reduction of graphene oxide (GO) by aniline, has been characterized by infrared spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmittance electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The sensing properties of RGO have also been studied, and the results show that RGO reduced from aniline (RGO-A) exhibits an excellent response to ammonia gas (NH3). Comparing with the RGO reduced from hydrazine (RGO-H) and polyaniline (PANI) nanofiber, the RGO-A exhibits a much better response to NH3 gas. The response of the sensor based on RGO-A to 50 ppm NH3 gas exhibits about 9.2 times and 3.5 times higher than those of the device based RGO-H and PANI nanofiber respectively. In addition, the RGO-A sensor exhibits an excellent repeatability and selectivity to NH3 gas. The oxidized aniline, i.e., polyaniline, which is attached on the surface of RGO sheets through π–π interaction, plays important roles in the final sensing performance of the device, and benefits for the application of the sensor in the field of NH3 gas detection.
High Precision NH3 Sensing Using Network Nano-Sheet Co3O4 Arrays Based Sensor at Room Temperature

Abstract:Network nano-sheet arrays of Co3O4 for high precision NH3 sensing application were prepared on alumina tube using a facile hydrothermal process without template or surfactant, and their morphology, nanostructures and NH3 gas sensing performance were investigated. The prepared nano-sheet Co3O4 arrays showed a network structure with an average sheet thickness of 39.5 nm. Detailed structural analysis confirmed that the synthesized Co3O4 nano -sheets were consisted of nanoparticles with an average diameter of 20.0 nm. NH3 gas sensor based on these network Co3O4 nano-sheet arrays showed a low detection limit (0.2 ppm), rapid response/recovery time (9 s/134 s for 0.2 ppm NH3), good reproducibility and long-term stability for NH3 detection at room temperature. Self-assembly polyaniline films for the high-performance ammonia gas sensor

Abstract:Developing a sensor with high selectivity and fast response-recovery time for detecting ammonia gas in complex environments is a challenging task. However, recent polymer-based ammonia gas sensors often suffer from low sensitivity and long response-recovery time. In this work, with the assistance of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS), and lauryl amine (LA), the PANI films were prepared by interfacial synthesis to obtain the ordered polymer chains and applied to NH3 sensors. At room temperature, the SDS-functionalized PANI film-based sensor shows a good response to NH3 (5.4 for 40 ppm NH3), the detection limit is 0.1 ppm, and the recovery time is 12 s, which is better than that similar base on PANI. The functionalized PANI film has an ordered structure to accelerate the electron transport rate and the protonation/deprotonation properties, which make the sensor have excellent gas sensing performance. In addition, the sensor has good reproducibility, moisture resistance, and long-term stability. This result provides important opinions for realizing polymer materials with high gas-sensing properties to NH3.

Abstract:We report a room-temperature NH3 gas sensor with high response and great long-term stability, including CeO2 NPs conformally coated by cross-linked PANI hydrogel. Such core shell nanocomposites were prepared by in situ polymerization with different weight ratios of CeO2 NPs and aniline. At room temperature, the nanohybrids showed enhanced response (6.5 to 50 ppm of NH3), which could be attributed to p-n junctions formed by the intimate contact between these two materials. Moreover, the stability was discussed in terms of phytic acid working as a gelator, which helped the PANI sheath accommodate itself and enhance the mechanical strength and chemical stability of the sensors by avoiding "swelling effect" in high relative humidity. The sensors maintained its sensing characteristic (response of ca. 6.5 to 50 ppm of NH3) in 15 days. Herein, the obtained results could help to accelerate the development of ammonia gas sensor.

Abstract:Gas-sensing performance of graphene-based material has been investigated widely in recent years. Polyaniline (PANI) has been reported as an effective method to improve ammonia gas sensors’ response. A gas sensor based on a composite of rGO film and protic acid doped polyaniline (PA-PANI) with GO doping is reported in this work. GO mainly provides NH3 adsorption sites, and PA-PANI is responsible for charge transfer during the gas-sensing response process. The experimental results indicate that the NH3 gas response of rGO is enhanced significantly by decorating with PA-PANI. Moreover, a small amount of GO mixed with PA-PANI is beneficial to increase the gas response, which showed an improvement of 262.5% at 25 ppm comparing to no GO mixing in PA-PANI.

High-Performance Gas Sensor of Polyaniline/Carbon Nanotube Composites Promoted by Interface Engineering

Abstract:Inspired by the enhanced gas-sensing performance by the one-dimensional hierarchical structure, one-dimensional hierarchical polyaniline/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PANI/CNT) fibers were prepared. Interestingly, the simple heating changed the sensing characteristics of PANI from p-type to n-type and n-type PANI and p-type CNTs form p–n hetero junctions at the core–shell interface of hierarchical PANI/CNT composites. The p-type PANI/CNT (p-PANI/CNT) and n-type PANI/CNT (n-PANI/CNT) performed the higher sensitivity to NO2 and NH3, respectively. The response times of p-PANI/CNT and n-PANI/CNT to 50 ppm of NO2 and NH3 are only 5.2 and 1.8 s, respectively, showing the real-time response. The estimated limit of detection for NO2 and NH3 is as low as to 16.7 and 6.4 ppb, respectively. After three months, the responses of p-PANI/CNT and n-PANI/CNT decreased by 19.1% and 11.3%, respectively. It was found that one-dimensional hierarchical structures and the deeper charge depletion layer enhanced by structural changes of PANI contributed to the sensitive and fast responses to NH3 and NO2. The formation process of the hierarchical PANI/CNT fibers, p–n transition, and the enhanced gas-sensing performance were systematically analyzed. This work also predicts the development prospects of cost-effective, high-performance PANI/CNT-based sensors.

Abstract:Herein, we report a successful synthesis of supramolecularly assembled polyaniline/silver oxide/graphene oxide composite (PANI/Ag2O/GO) for enhanced NO2 gas sensing application. The PANI/Ag2O/GO composite was synthesized by facile stirring followed by an ultrasonication process. The prepared material was characterized by different techniques such as x-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Raman-scattering spectroscopy. The detailed analysis revealed that the average crystallite sizes of PANI/Ag2O and PANI/Ag2O/GO composites were found to be 37.37 nm and 41.55 nm, respectively. FESEM and TEM analysis showed coral-like rough-surfaced and extensively agglomerated morphology for PANI and ultrathin flexible sheet-like morphology for GO. Ag2O nanoparticles with diameters 20–30 nm were well incorporated in the GO sheets and PANI matrix in the case of PANI/Ag2O/GO composites. The synthesized materials were used to make resistive sensor devices that had a high response to NO2 gas. The fabricated sensors were examined at various temperatures to obtain the optimal sensing temperature. The fabricated NO2 gas sensor device based on PANI/Ag2O/GO composite exhibited a highest sensitivity of 5.85 for 25 ppm at an optimized temperature (100 °C) as compared to the pure PANI (2.5) and PANI/Ag2O composite (3.25). Further, the fabricated sensor device based on PANI/Ag2O/GO composite was also examined at different NO2 gas concentrations.

Abstract:The accurate and rapid sensing of NH3 at room temperature is a challenging conundrum for daily life and environment protection. In this work, we have explored an intriguing material, hollow NiO sphere composited with polyaniline (labelled as h-NiO-PANI) for NH3 gas sensing, fabricated by growing PANI on the hollow NiO sphere derived from solvothermal synthesis and calcination. Ni-Cu glycerate is obtained via solvothermal synthesis, which is a universal way to produce uniform glycerate microspheres. During calcination, the hollow sphere is ingeniously designed by taking advantage of the outward adhesion from CuO to the inner core. Polymerization of aniline on the hollow spheres is beneficial for large specific surface area and gas adsorption. Impressively, the sensor based on h-NiO-PANI exhibits favorable response to NH3 (ΔR/R0=43% for 10 ppm, 149 s in response and 257 s in recovery), which is greatly better than the counterparts (NiO-PANI and PANI). Moreover, the sensor has also shown superb anti-interference against common volatile organic compounds (VOCs), water and humidity, along with the superior repeatability in 5 cycles and long-term stability in a week, manifesting the sensor a promising candidate in daily application. The enhanced gas sensing performance is attributed to the hollow structure and construction of p-p heterojunctions between NiO and PANI.
