Abstract:The geometric stability, electronic structure and catalytic properties of a single Pd atom deposited on a pristine Mo2CO2 monolayer and a defective Mo2CO2 monolayer with an oxygen vacancy (denoted as Pd/O-V-Mo2CO2) are systematically investigated through density functional theory. We find that the oxygen vacancy (O-V) can stabilize the single Pd atom and make the Pd/O-V-Mo2CO2 system an excellent mono-dispersed atomic catalyst. The Pd dopant serves as an active center which makes the intermediates react productively around it. Three reaction mechanisms are considered for CO oxidation to test the catalytic activity of Pd/O-V-Mo2CO2, which exhibits high activity for CO oxidation via a tri-molecular Eley-Rideal (TER) mechanism with a rate-limiting energy barrier of 0.49 eV. The pre-adsorbed CO molecules on the Pd dopant could transfer electrons to the O-2-2 pi* orbitals, which would promote O-2 molecule activation and induce O-O bond scission. This work demonstrates that the defective monolayer MXene may serve as a promising sort of support to fabricate single atomic catalysts (SACs) for CO oxidation or other reactions, agreeing well with the experimental reports, which opens up a new avenue for the design and fabrication of SACs of MXene-based materials.

The calculated activation energy barriers of the rate-limiting step are 0.67 eV (TER), 0.78 eV (LH) and 0.88 eV (ER), respectively. The present study illustrates that it is promising to develop and design low-cost, non-noble metal SACs using MXene types of 2D materials.

Abstract:Finding transition metal catalysts for effective catalytic conversion of CO to CO2 has attracted much attention. MXene as a new 2D layered material of early transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbo-nitrides is a robust support for achoring metal atoms. In this study, the electronic structure, geometries, thermodynamic stability, and catalytic activity of MXene (Mo2CS2) supported single noble metal atoms (NM = Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt and Au) have been systematically examined using first-principles calculations and ab initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) simulations. First, AIMD simulations and phonon spectra demonstrate the dynamic and thermal stabilities of Mo2CS2 monolayer. Three likely reaction pathways, Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH), Eley-Rideal (ER), and Termolecular Eley–Rideal (TER) for CO oxidation on the Ru1- and Ir1@Mo2CS2 SACs, have been studied in detail. It is found that CO oxidation mainly proceeds via the TER mechanism under mild reaction conditions. The corresponding rate-determining steps are the dissociation of the intermediate (OCO-Ru1-OCO) and formation of OCO-Ir1-OCO intermediate. The downshift d-band center of Ru1- and Ir1@Mo2CS2 help to enhance activity and improve catalytst stability. Moreover, a microkinetic study predicts a maximum CO oxidation rate of 4.01×102 s-1 and 4.15×103 s-1 (298.15 K) following the TER pathway for the Ru1 and Ir1@Mo2CS2 catalysts, respectively. This work provides guideline for fabricating and designing highly efficient SACs with superb catalyts using MXene materials.

Abstract:MXenes have attracted considerable attention owing to their versatile and excellent physicochemical properties. Especially, they have potential applications as robust support for single atom catalysts. Here, quantum chemical studies with density functional theory are carried out to systematically investigate the geometries, stability, electronic properties of oxygen functionalized Ti2C (Ti2CO2) supported single-atom catalysts M1/Ti2CO2 (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag Os, Ir, Pt, Au). A new non-noble metal SAC Fe1/Ti2CO2 has been found to show excellent catalytic performance for low-temperature CO oxidation after screening the group 8-11 transition metals. We find that O2 and CO adsorption on Fe1 atom of Fe1/Ti2CO2 is favorable. Accordingly, five possible mechanisms for CO oxidation on this catalyst are evaluated, including Eley-Rideal, Langmuir-Hinshelwood, Mars–van Krevelen, Termolecular Eley-Rideal, and Termolecular Langmuir-Hinshelwood (TLH) mechanisms. Based on the calculated reaction energies for different pathways, Fe1/Ti2CO2 shows excellent kinetics for CO oxidation via TLH mechanism, with distinct low-energy barrier (0.20 eV) for the rate-determining step. These results demonstrate that Fe1/Ti2CO2 MXene is highly promising 2D materials for building robust non-noble metal catalysts.

Abstract:Transition-metal catalysts that can efficiently activate peroxide bonds have been extensively pursued for various applications including environmental remediation, chemical synthesis, and sensing. Here, we present pyridine-coordinated Co single atoms embedded in a polyaromatic macrostructure as a highly efficient peroxide-activation catalyst. The efficient catalytic production of reactive radicals through peroxymonosulfate activation was demonstrated by the rapid removal of model aqueous pollutants of environmental and public health concerns such as bisphenol A, without pH limitation and Co2+ leaching. The turnover frequency of the newly synthesized Co single-atom catalyst bound to tetrapyridomacrocyclic ligands was found to be 2 to 4 orders of magnitude greater than that of benchmark homogeneous (Co2+) and nanoparticulate (Co3O4) catalysts. Experimental results and density functional theory simulation suggest that the abundant π-conjugation in the polyaromatic support and strong metal-support electronic interaction allow the catalysts to effectively adsorb and activate the peroxide precursor. We further loaded the catalysts onto a widely used poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membrane and demonstrated that the model pollutants were oxidatively removed as they simply passed through the filter, suggesting the promise of utilizing this novel catalyst for realistic applications.
Electron-enriched Single-Pd-sites on G-C3n4 Nanosheets Achieved by In-Situ Anchoring Twinned Pd Nanoparticles for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:Modulating electronic structures of single-atom metal cocatalysts is vital for highly active photoreduction of CO2, and it's especially challenging to develop a facile method to modify the dispersion of atomical photocatalytic sites. We herein report an ion-loading pyrolysis route to in-situ anchor Pd single atoms as well as twinned Pd nanoparticles on ultra-thin graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (PdTP/PdSA-CN) for high-efficiency photoreduction of CO2. The anchored Pd twinned nanoparticles donate electrons to adjacent single Pd-N4 sites through the carbon nitride networks, and the optimized PdTP/PdSA-CN photocatalyst exhibits a CO evolution rate up to 46.5 mu mol g-1 h-1 with nearly 100% selectivity. As revealed by spectroscopic and theoretical analyses, the superior photocatalytic activity is attributed to the lowered desorption barrier of carbonyl species at electron-enriched Pd single atoms, together with the improved efficiencies of light-harvesting and charge separation/transport. This work has demonstrated the engineering of the electron density of single active sites with twinned metal nanoparticles assisted by strong electronic interaction with the support of the atomic metal, and unveiled the underlying mechanism for expedited photocatalytic efficiency.
Crystal Facet Induced Single-Atom Pd/CoxOyon a Tunable Metal-Support Interface for Low Temperature Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Atomic dispersed metal sites in single-atom catalysts are highly mobile and easily sintered to form large particles, which deteriorates the catalytic performance severely. Moreover, lack of criterion concerning the role of the metal-support interface prevents more efficient and wide application. Here, a general strategy is reported to synthesize stable single atom catalysts by crafting on a variety of cobalt-based nanoarrays with precisely controlled architectures and compositions. The highly uniform, well-aligned, and densely packed nanoarrays provide abundant oxygen vacancies (17.48%) for trapping Pd single atoms and lead to the creation of 3D configured catalysts, which exhibit very competitive activity toward low temperature CO oxidation (100% conversion at 90 degrees C) and prominent long-term stability (continuous conversion at 60 degrees C for 118 h). Theoretical calculations show that O vacancies at high-index {112} facet of Co(x)O(y)nanocrystallite are preferential sites for trapping single atoms, which guarantee strong interface adhesion of Pd species to cobalt-based support and play a pivotal role in preventing the decrement of activity, even under moisture-rich conditions (approximate to 2% water vapor). The progress presents a promising opportunity for tailoring catalytic properties consistent with the specific demand on target process, beyond a facile design with a tunable metal-support interface.

Abstract:The catalytic oxidation of CO on Cu3 cluster decorated pristine and defective Mo2CO2 monolayers (Cu3/p-Mo2CO2 and Cu3/d-Mo2CO2) was investigated by first-principles calculations. The stability of the designed catalysts were comprehensively demonstrated via the analysis of energies, geometry distortion and molecular dynamics simulations at finite temperatures. The difference in the individual adsorption energies, as well as the oxidation and poisoning of Cu3/p-(d-)Mo2CO2 under CO and O2 gas atmospheres, were tested to estimate the catalytic ability. We found that Cu3/d-Mo2CO2 might be a superior catalyst with good stability and reactivity for CO oxidation. The active sites of the Cu3 cluster acting as an electron reservoir governed its electron donating and electron accepting ability. Different adsorption configurations of O2 on Cu3/d-Mo2CO2 also gave rise to different reaction activities. The facile rate-limiting energy barrier was attributed to the charge buffer capacity of the Cu3 cluster that mediates the reaction. Our results may provide clues to fabricate MXene-based materials by depositing small clusters on MXenes and explore the advanced applications of these materials.
PdMo Bimetallene Coupled with MXene Nanosheets as Efficient Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Formic Acid and Methanol Oxidation Reactions

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrate a facile soft chemistry strategy for the in situ growth of two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin PdMo bimetallene tightly coupled with Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets (PdMo/Ti3C2Tx) using a robust stereoassembly process. The 2D PdMo bimetallene offers numerous unsaturated Pd atoms and simultaneously induces combined bimetallic alloy and strain effects, while the Ti3C2Tx matrix effectively optimizes the electronic structure of PdMo bimetallene via a face-to-face interface interaction and guarantees exceptional electrical conductivity. As a consequence, the newly designed PdMo/Ti3C2Tx nanoarchitecture expresses remarkable electrocatalytic properties for the formic acid and methanol electro-oxidation, in terms of large electrochemically active surface areas, ultrahigh catalytic activity, strong antipoisoning ability, and dependable long-term stability, all of which are better than those of conventional Pd nanoparticle catalysts supported by Ti3C2Tx and carbon matrices.
Single‐Atom Catalysts Based on the Mo2CO2 MXene for CO Oxidation

Abstract:Density functional theory is used to explore CO oxidation on single‐atom catalysts (SACs) of Ti, Fe, or Zn on the Mo2CO2 MXene. Fe@Mo2CO2 shows efficient CO oxidation via a Termolecular Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism, while Zn@Mo2CO2 follows a hybrid Langmuir–Hinshelwood/Eley–Rideal mechanism. On Ti@Mo2CO2, CO2 desorption is severely hindered. The Fe‐based SAC is identified as the most effective catalyst. Through density functional theory calculations, the mechanism of CO oxidation to CO2 on single‐atom catalysts consisting of an atom of Ti, Fe, or Zn deposited on the surface of the Mo2CO2 MXene is investigated. In the case of Fe@Mo2CO2, a mechanism resembling that of Termolecular Langmuir–Hinshelwood (TLH) is thermodynamically and kinetically favored, displaying very exothermic CO2 formation, low activation energies, and easy CO2 desorption. On Ti@Mo2CO2, the dissociation of CO2 is almost barrierless and much more likely to occur than CO2 desorption, barring the usage of this surface as a catalyst for CO oxidation. Finally, on Zn@Mo2CO2, a hybrid Langmuir–Hinshelwood/Eley–Rideal (LH/ER) mechanism is thermodynamically and kinetically feasible. Here, after the first CO2 forms, with an energy barrier of only 0.62 eV, the second CO2 is formed spontaneously, and the Zn–CO2 interactions are weak enough to allow desorption. The calculated thermodynamic quantities and reaction rates at T = 300 K indicate that Fe@Mo2CO2 should be quite active toward CO oxidation, followed by Zn@Mo2CO2, while the Ti‐based model is inactive. The results add to the evidence that establishes single transition metal atoms adsorbed on MXene surfaces as cheap and easily obtainable catalysts that offer the best of both bare and functionalized MXenes.

Abstract:On the basis of first-principles calculations, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ru, Rh, Ag, Ir, Pt, and Au decorated Mo2CO2-delta monolayers are investigated as potential single-atom catalyst (SAC) candidates for low-temperature CO oxidation reaction. From a first screening based on intuitive criteria concerning metal sintering, CO poisoning, and O-2 adsorption strength, the Zn/Mo2CO2-delta system is selected for further scrutiny by means of reactivity calculations for different CO concentrations. A lower barrier is found for Eley-Rideal reaction mechanism than for the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. The low Eley-Rideal barrier (0.15 eV) is attributed to the fact that the Zn atom weakens the O-O bond considerably and the electrophilic attack of CO weakens it further. The main conclusion is that this system is a promising low-temperature SAC candidate with a lower energy barrier for CO oxidation than noble metal and other 2D SAC systems investigated.
Stable Pd-Doped Ceria Structures for CH4 Activation and CO Oxidation

Abstract:Doping CeO2 with Pd atoms has been associated with catalytic CO oxidation, but current surface models do not allow CO adsorption. Here, we report a new structure of Pd-doped CeO2(111), in which Pd adopts a square planar configuration instead of the previously assumed octahedral configuration. Oxygen removal from this doped structure is favorable. The resulting defective Pd-doped CeO2 surface is active for CO oxidation and is also able to cleave the first C-H bond in methane. We show how the moderate CO adsorption energy and dynamic features of the Pd atom upon CO adsorption and CO oxidation contribute to a low-barrier catalytic cycle for CO oxidation. These structures, which are also observed for Ni and Pt, can lead to a more open coordination environment around the doped-transition-metal center. These thermally stable structures are relevant to the development of single-atom catalysts.

Abstract:A new Mars‐van Krevelen mechanism for CO oxidation is proposed for a MXene model surface (Cr2TiC2O2) decorated with a single–atom–catalyst (TiSAC). First‐principles computations are performed to investigate the catalytic oxidation of CO on a Ti‐decorated Cr2TiC2O2 MXene monolayer, through comprehensive analysis of charge transfer, electronic density of states, and charge density difference of the interacting systems. By comparing the reaction energy barriers, it is found that, rather than the traditional Langmuir–Hinshelwood, Eley–Rideal, and Mars‐van Krevelen (MvK) mechanisms, the CO oxidation favours a new variant of the MvK mechanism, in which the anchored Ti atom activates the surface oxygen to spill over from the substrate and take part in the CO oxidation. This work highlights the importance of activating the surface oxygen atoms of MXene by foreign metal atoms to improve the catalytic activity, and suggests that further studies into the new MvK mechanism for CO oxidation may prove worthwhile.

Highly Active and Stable CH4 Oxidation by Substitution of Ce4+ by Two Pd2+ Ions in CeO2(111).

Abstract:Methane (CH4) combustion is an increasingly important reaction for environmental protection, for which Pd/CeO2 has emerged as the preferred catalyst. There is a lack of understanding of the nature of the active site in these catalysts. Here, we use density functional theory to understand the role of doping of Pd in the ceria surface for generating sites highly active toward the C-H bonds in CH4. Specifically, we demonstrate that two Pd2+ ions can substitute one Ce4+ ion, resulting in a very stable structure containing a highly coordinated unsaturated Pd cation that can strongly adsorb CH4 and dissociate the first C-H bond with a low energy barrier. An important aspect of the high activity of the stabilized isolated Pd cation is its ability to form a strong σ-complex with CH4, which leads to effective activation of CH4. We show that also other transition metals like Pt, Rh, and Ni can give rise to similar structures with high activity toward C-H bond dissociation. These insights provide us with a novel structural view of solid solutions of transition metals such as Pt, Pd, Ni, and Rh in CeO2, known to exhibit high activity in CH4 combustion.
Ultrasmall Pd nanocrystals confined into Co-based metal organic framework-decorated MXene nanoarchitectures for efficient methanol electrooxidation

Abstract:The natural scarcity and insufficient utilization of noble metal-based catalysts bring a heavy block in the way of the widespread applications of direct methanol fuel cells. Herein, we propose a feasible bottom-up approach to the construction of ultrasmall Pd nanocrystals confined into Co-based metal organic framework-decorated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene (Pd/MOF-MX) nanoarchitectures via a controllable solvothermal process. The ultrathin MXene nanolamellas and porous Co-based MOFs constitute an ideal hybrid carrier with high electron conductivity and large accessible surface areas, which not only facilitates the size restriction and uniform dispersion of Pd nanocrystals, but also ameliorates their intrinsic catalytic activity through the direct electronic interactions. By virtue of the pronounced synergistic coupling effects, the newly-developed Pd/MOF-MX nanoarchitectures exhibit markedly enhanced electrocatalytic properties towards the methanol oxidation reaction, including a large electrochemically active surface area of 116.7 m 2 g −1 , a high mass activity of 1700.4 mA mg −1 as well as a satisfactory long-term durability, which are superior to those of traditional Pd electrocatalysts anchored on carbon blacks, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and undecorated MXene matrixes.

Abstract:The design and development of efficient catalyst is very important for the removal of air pollutants through catalytic oxidation technology. Here, the Pd/CeO 2 catalysts were synthesized via in-situ thermal pyrolysis of Pd 2+ doped Ce-MOF. The prepared Pd/CeO 2 -NB catalyst exhibits nanobundles structure and highly dispersed Pd species, which shows superior performance in CO oxidation and CH 4 combustion at low temperature (<400 °C). The Raman, XPS, TPR and CO-IR reveal that the Pd/CeO 2 -NB sample has a certain surface concentration of Pd 0 species, and the formed Pd/PdO species boost the generation of oxygen vacancies, facilitating the dissociation of gas oxygen and the diffusion of lattice oxygen. Besides, possible reaction mechanism is also clarified by in-situ DRIFTS spectra, and main surface intermediate species (carbonate and carbon oxygenates) were confirmed. This study paves a way for the design of MOFs-based catalytic materials.

Abstract:Pd-based catalysts that prepared by traditional impregnation or co-precipitate method show remarkable activity for catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbon, unfortunately they tend to deactivate in the long-term reaction process or at high temperature by sintering and transformation of active species. We now report a facile strategy to synthesize Pd/Co3O4 with superior catalytic durability for the methane catalytic oxidation. In this method, Pd ions coordinate with −CoOCH2COOH that derived from Co precursor and form the Pd-Co precursor complex at first, this complex was further calcined into Pd/Co3O4 catalysts with strong interaction between Pd and cobalt oxide. Methane catalytic oxidation experiment demonstrated that such Pd-based catalyst possesses intrinsically enhanced catalytic activity and exhibits a high resistance toward deactivate in the harsh reaction condition, in sharp contrast to the conventional catalysts prepared via impregnation or deposition-precipitation routes. TEM, XPS, O2-TPO, and isotopic experiments further indicate that the Pd/Co3O4 could form stronger interaction between PdO and Co3O4 and produce more actives species during long-term reaction.
