Abstract:Na2Ti3O7 is considered as a promising anode material for sodiumion batteries (SIBs) due to its excellent highrate performance compared with hard carbons. However, the electrochemical performance of Na2Ti3O7 is heavily limited by its low electrical conductivity. In this study, we synthesized a series of lanthanide (Ln = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Er, and Yb) doped microsized Na2Ti3O7 anode materials and systematically studied the electrochemical performance. Compared with pristine Na2Ti3O7, all the doped samples show superior electrochemical performance. Especially, the Yb3+ doped sample not only delivers a high reversible capacity of 89.4 mA h g(-1) at 30C, but also maintains 71.6 mA h g(-1) at 5C after 1600 cycles, nearly twice that of pristine Na2Ti3O7. It is found for the first time that the enhancement in doped samples is attributed to the introduction of lanthanides which induces lattice distortion and oxygen vacancies.
Enhanced electrochemical performance of TiO 2 by Ti 3+ doping using a facile solvothermal method as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:A facile method has been developed to synthesize Ti3+-doped TiO2 nanoparticles as high-performance anode materials for Li-ion batteries. After reducing some Ti4+ ions to Ti3+ ions with zinc powders in TiCl4 solution, Ti3+-doped TiO2 was synthesized by solvothermal methode. The obtained Ti3+-doped TiO2 nanoparticles are relatively uniform and better dispersed with an average size of 30nm. Great improvement of the electrochemical performance was obtained by Ti3+-doping comparing with the pure TiO2. The Ti3+-doped TiO2 nanoparticles prepared at the Zn:Ti molar ratio of 4% are able to deliver a reversible capacity of 202.1 mAh g−1 at a current density of 100mA g−1 and exhibit superior high-rate discharge/charge capability and cycling stability at the current density up to 3000mA g−1 in a half cell configuration. The improved reversible capacity and rate capability could be ascribed to the presence of Ti3+, which improves the electrical conductivity and reduces the charge transfer resistance of the TiO2 electrode.

Abstract:Iron- and manganese-based layered metal oxides, as cathodes for sodium ion batteries, have received widespread attention because of the low cost and high specific capacity. However, the Jahn-teller effect of Mn3+ ions and the resulted unstable structure usually lead to continuously capacity decay. Herein, Titanium (Ti) has been successfully doped into Na2/3Fe1/3Mn2/3O2 to suppress the Jahn-Teller distortion and improve both cycling and rate performance of sodium ion batteries. In situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction study shows that Ti-doped compound (Na2/3Fe1/3Mn0.57Ti0.1O2) can maintain the single P2 phase without any phase transition during the whole charging/discharging process. Various electrochemical characterizations are also applied to explore the better kinetics of sodium ions transfer in the Na2/3Fe1/3Mn0.57Ti0.1O2. This work provides a comprehensive insight into the Ti-doping effects on the performance from both structural and electrokinetic perspectives.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide is considered to be promising anode for sodium-ion batteries due to stable structure during the charge/discharge process. However, its practical application is hindered by the slow electron/ion transport. Herein, phosphorus-doped anatase TiO2 nanoparticles with oxygen vacancies are successfully synthesized and utilized as high-performance sodium-storage materials. The dual strategy of phosphorus-doping and oxygen vacancies can concurrently boost electronic conductivity and adjust ion diffusion kinetics. They significantly contribute to the improved rate performance (167 mAh·g−1 at 20.0C) and stable cycling (95.9% after 2000 cycles at 20.0C). The proposed dual strategy can be potentially used to improve other oxide anodes for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:P-doping is an effective way to modulate the electronic structure and improve the Na+ diffusion kinetics of TiO2, enabling enhanced electrochemical performance. However, it is a challenge to prepare TiO2 with a high P-doping concentration starting from TiO2 in a crystalline state. In this work, we design a novel two-step route for constructing a carbon-coated anatase P-doping TiO2 nanospheres (denote as (P-AnTSS)@NC) with high P-doping concentration, by utilizing amorphous TiO2 nanospheres with the ultra-high specific area as P-doping precursor firstly, and followed by carbon coating treatment. Experimental results demonstrate that P is successfully doped into the crystal lattice and carbon layer is well coated on the surface of TiO2, with P-doping and carbon-coating contents of ∼ 13.5 wt% and 10.4 wt%, respectively, which results in the enhanced pseudocapacitive behavior as well as favorable Na+ and electron transferring kinetics. The (P-AnTSS)@NC sample shows excellent rate and cycle performance, exhibiting specific capacities of 177 and 115 mAh/g at 0.1 and 1.0 A/g after 150 and 2000 cycles, respectively

Abstract:Lithium/sodium titanates usually demonstrate high ionic conductivity, and people sometimes view them as alternative anode materials for high power battery applications. In this work, we introduce a different amount of Mo6+ self-doping in the Ti sites of Na2Li2Ti6O14 via a facile solid-state reaction method. The electrode specific capacity, cycle life and rate capability were significantly improved due to the enhanced charge transport property. By XRD refinement and XPS characterization, it is confirmed that Mo6+ is successfully doped into Na2Li2Ti6O14. Through optimization of doping level, Na2Li2Ti5.9Mo0.1O14 exhibits superior electrochemical performance, which could deliver a reversible capacity of 206 mAh.g(-1) with capacity retention of 81.1% after 200 cycles, even at a current density of 500 mA.g(-1). The cation transport and conductivity in Na2Li2Ti5.9Mo0.1O14 is investigated from thermodynamic and kinetic aspects. By reducing particle size, Na2Li2Ti5.9Mo0.1O14 exhibits the best rate-capability. Therefore, Na2Li2Ti5.9Mo0.1O14 is a promising high-rate anode material for future fast charging applications.
Improved electrochemical performance of nitrogen doped TiO2-B nanowires as anode materials for Li-ion batteries

Abstract:N-doped TiO2-B nanowires are prepared by the solvothermal method using TiN nanoparticles as the starting material. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that the N dopants preferentially occupy the interstitial sites of TiO2-B up to a content of similar to 0.55 at%. Above this critical value, the N dopants will substitute the oxygen atoms which improve the electronic conductivity of TiO2-B. The maximum proportion of substituted-N in the TiO2-B nanowires is similar to 1.3 at%. Raman scattering shows that the substituted-N strengthens the Ti(1)-O-1-Ti(2) and O-1-Ti(1)-O-3 bonds of TiO2-B. This improves the stability of the corresponding local structures, thus reducing the distortion of the Li+ diffusion channel along the b-axis of TiO2-B. As a result, the substituted-N has more of an impact on the electrochemical properties of TiO2-B than the interstitial-N does. The TiO2-B nanowires containing substituted-N dopants exhibit a remarkably enhanced electrochemical performance compared to pure TiO2-B. They show a discharge capacity of 153 mA h g(-1) at the 20 C rate with a capacity retention of 76% after 1000 cycles. In addition, they can deliver a discharge capacity of 100 mA h g(-1) at an ultra-high rate of 100 C, indicating their great potential in high power lithium ion batteries.
Pressure-Induced Defects and Reduced Size Endow TiO2 with High Capacity over 20 000 Cycles and Excellent Fast-Charging Performance in Sodium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Anatase TiO2 as sodium-ion-battery anode has attracted increased attention because of its low volume change and good safety. However, low capacity and poor rate performance caused by low electrical conductivity and slow ion diffusion greatly impede its practical applications. Here, a bi-solvent enhanced pressure strategy that induces defects (oxygen vacancies) into TiO2 via N doping and reduces its size by using mutual-solvent ethanol and dopant dimethylformamide as pressure-increased reagent of tetrabutyl orthotitanate tetramer is proposed to fabricate N-doped TiO2/C nanocomposites. The induced defects can increase ion storage sites, improve electrical conductivity, and decrease bandgap and ion diffuse energy barrier of TiO2. The size reduction increases contact interfaces between TiO2 and C and shortens ion diffuse distance, thus increasing extra ion storage sites and boosting ion diffusion rate of TiO2. The N-doped TiO2 possesses highly stable crystal structure with a slightly increase of 0.86% in crystal lattice spacing and 3.2% in particle size after fully sodiation. Consequently, as a sodium-ion battery anode, the nanocomposite delivers high capacity and superior rate capability along with ultralong cycling life. This work proposes a novel pressure-induced synthesis strategy that provides unique guidance for designing TiO2-based anode materials with high capacity and excellent fast-charging capability.
Synergistic Effect of Nitrogen and Sulfur Dual‐Doping Endows TiO 2 with Exceptional Sodium Storage Performance

Abstract:Improving the diffusion kinetics of sodium ions within TiO2 and its intrinsic electronic conductivity is indispensable to enhance the rate capability and long cyclic stability of TiO2 anodes for sodium‐ion batteries. Although single‐heteroatom doping into TiO2 has been widely investigated, a comprehensive understanding of the effects of dual‐heteroatoms doping on the sodium storage performance of TiO2 is still lacking. Herein, nitrogen and sulfur dual‐doping is proposed to achieve a high doping concentration for anatase TiO2 hollow spheres. Experimental data and theoretical calculations reveal that N doping can efficiently narrow the bandgap of TiO2, while S doping is effective in facilitating Na+ diffusion within TiO2. Thus N and S codoped TiO2 shows remarkably boosted electronic conductivity, as well as accelerated sodium ion transfer kinetics owing to the synergistic effect of different doping heteroatoms, which leads to exceptional rate performance (307.5 and 156.4 mAh g−1 at 33.5 and 5025 mA g−1, respectively), and extraordinary cycling stability (90.5% retention over 2400 cycles at 3350 mA g−1). The greatly improved electrochemical performance emphasizes the importance of defects engineering in the rational design of advanced battery materials.

Dual Doping of Titania for Enhanced Na Storage Performance

Abstract:The sluggish sodium-ion diffusion kinetics and low electronic conductivity have severely restricted the development of the TiO2 anode for sodium-ion batteries. Defect engineering, such as single-heteroatom doping and oxygen vacancies, has proven to be effective methods to improve the conductivity of TiO2, but a comprehensive understanding of the synergistic effect of dual-heteroatom doping and oxygen vacancies on the sodium storage performance of TiO2 is still lacking. Herein, we design a synergistic strategy of dual doping via the in situ doping and hydrogenation treatment to improve conductivity and cycling stability of TiO2. Experiments and theoretical calculations together revealed that N and C doping reduces the band gap of TiO2, while the presence of oxygen vacancies efficiently accelerates the diffusion of sodium ions. Thus N, C, and oxygen vacancies with high concentration co-doped TiO2, resulting in extraordinary high-rate performance, significant stable cycling, and long-term cyclability of up to 10,000 cycles. Carbon-bonded, Oxygen-Deficient TiO2 Nanotubes with Hybridized Phases for Superior Na-ion Storage

Abstract:TiO2 shows great potential as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, its practical application has been deferred by the sluggish electronic/ionic transport. In this work, we report the controlled synthesis of ultrathin, carbon-bonded TiO2 nanotubes with oxygen vacancies (V-o) and hybridized amorphous/TiO2(B) phases via a hydrothermal reaction and heat-treatment. The introduction of V-o and carbon in TiO2 by C-Ti bonding effectively boosts its electron transport. Meantime, the ultrathin TiO2 nanotubes (with diameter of similar to 10 nm and tube thickness of similar to 3 nm) enable a large electrode/electrolyte contact interface with shortened Na+ diffusion distance. In addition, the formed coherent amorphous/TiO2(B) junctions further promote the charge transport and transfer at heterointerface. These synergic effects endow the resultant TiO2 material with superior Na+ storage capability in terms of high capacity (191 mA h/g at 0.2 C) and rate property (141 mA h/g at 10 C). Kinetics analysis further discloses a pseudocapacitive Na+ storage exerts a significant contribution to the total capacity. The proposed strategy based on synergic engineering of vacancy defects, chemical bonding and phase composition can pave the way for exploration of novel electrode materials for beyond lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2) has drawn great attention as an anode material in sodium ion batteries (SIBs), but it suffers from the sluggish diffusion kinetics of Na+ within TiO2 and inferior electronic conductivity. Herein, under the guidance of density functional theory (DFT), we propose a nitrogen and selenium dual-doped TiO2 system as an advanced SIB anode. Both DFT and experimental investigations reveal the cooperative effect of dopants in boosting the electrochemical performance of TiO2, finding the optimal content ratio (N/Se at 1:3) for overall improved SIB performances. As expected, experimental results exhibit excellent sodium storage behavior of the N,Se-doped TiO2, including high discharge capacity (142 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1), good rate performance (82 mAh g-1 at 20 A g-1), and ultralong cyclability (97% retention over 5000 cycles at 2 A g-1). Our study underscores the importance of dual-heteroatom doping in the rational design of advanced electrode materials.
Heterostructure engineering of MnO/TiO 2 embedded in N-doped hollow carbon nanofibers for superior sodium storage

Abstract:TiO 2 -based materials are viewed as promising anodes for sodium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacity and superior structural stability, but they suffer from low electron conductivity and sluggish Na + diffusion kinetics, which leads to inferior rate performance and cyclability. Herein, a novel MnO/TiO 2 embedded into N-doped hollow carbon nanofibers (MnO/TiO 2 @N-C) is proposed to address this challenge via combining the heterostructure engineering and nanostructure designing. The integrated design greatly enhances the Na + transfer and adsorption, provides more active interfacial sites and promotes the electric conductivity. The first-principle density functional theory calculations manifest that the constructed hetero-interfaces between MnO and TiO 2 induce strong electric fields and accelerate Na + transfer. Due to these merits, the MnO/TiO 2 @N-C exhibits a high reversible discharge capacity of 406.5 mA h g −1 at 0.3 A/g, superior rate capability (213.3 mA h g −1 at 3 A/g), and exceptional cycling performance (99.3 % capacity retention after 10,000 cycles at 3 A/g). In addition, the Na full cell based on MnO/TiO 2 @N-C anode exhibits a promising energy density of 332.8 Wh kg −1 at 677.1 W Kg −1 . This work offers a novel and an interesting strategy to improve electrochemical sodium storage of TiO 2 -based materials, which is significant for the practical applications of sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Incorporation of in‐situ Sn4+ doping and nano‐macro structure within TNO anode materials using facile one‐step co‐precipitation method achieves high Li+ diffusion coefficient and excellent high‐rate reversible capacities. Titanium niobium oxide (TNO) exhibits great potential as a lithium‐ion battery anode due to its high capacity, minimal volume change during cycling, and safe good operation characteristic enabled from its voltage profile. However, its intrinsically low electronic and ionic conductivity hinders its potential for practical applications. This work proposes a facile coprecipitation method to address these limitations by incorporating a nano‐macro structure and in situ Sn ion doping into bulk TNO. This approach ensures homogeneous integration of TNO precursors and the Sn dopant at a molecular level within the co‐precipitation nanoparticles. Additionally, the use of low toxicity solvents facilitate scalability of the synthesis process. Excellent rate capability, high reversible capacities, and good capacity retention are achieved simultaneously due to synergistic effects of the bulk doping, which expands the crystal volume and enhances Li+ diffusion, combined with abundant surface area of the nano‐macro structures. The specific capacity of Sn‐doped TNO nanospheres remains at 180 mAh/g at a high current density of 40 C (1 C=400 mA g−1), which is nearly four times higher than that of undoped samples. Furthermore, the cyclic voltammetry analysis at various scanning rates reveals an increased Li+ diffusion rate in Sn doped titanium niobium dioxide.

Facile synthesis of carbon and oxygen vacancy co-modified TiNb6O17 as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Titanium niobium oxides (TNOs), benefitting from their large specific capacity and Wadsley-Roth shear structure, are competitive anode materials for high-energy density and high-rate lithium-ion batteries. Herein, carbon and oxygen vacancy co-modified TiNb6O17 (A-TNO) was synthesized through a facile sol-gel reaction with subsequent heat treatment and ball-milling. Characterizations indicated that A-TNO is composed of nanosized primary particles, and the carbon content is about 0.7 wt%. The nanoparticles increase the contact area of the electrode and electrolyte and shorten the lithium-ion diffusion distance. The carbon and oxygen vacancies decrease the charge transfer resistance and enhance the Li-ion diffusion coefficient of the obtained anode material. As a result of these advantages, A-TNO exhibits excellent rate performance (208 and 177 mA h g-1 at 10C and 20C, respectively). This work reveals that A-TNO possesses good electrochemical performance and has a facile preparation process, thus A-TNO is believed to be a potential anode material for large-scale applications.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have shown great potential as energy storage devices due to their low price and abundant sodium content. In terms of current research, cathode materials remain the bottleneck for improving the performance of SIBs. Ti-doped O3-type Na(Ni0.3Fe0.2Mn0.5)1−xTixO2 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15) are investigated as the cathode material for sodium-ion batteries, and the results show that Ti doping can widen the layer spacing and suppress the ordering of Na+/vacancy and O3-P3 phase transition. The structurally stable Na(Ni0.3Fe0.2Mn0.5)0.9Ti0.1O2 cathode material, in particular, demonstrates enhanced rate capacity (93 mAh g−1, 2.0–4.0 V vs Na+/Na, 10 C, and 115 mAh g−1, 2.0–4.2 V vs Na+/Na, 10 C) and excellent cycling stability (87.5% capacity retention, 2.0–4.0 V vs Na+/Na, after 300 cycles, 1 C, and 82.1% capacity retention, 2.0–4.2 V vs Na+/Na, after 100 cycles, 1 C). In addition, Ti doping can effectively suppress the O3-P3 phase transition of the cathode materials and reduce the formation of the P3 phase at high voltage, which effectively suppresses the capacity decay during the charge/discharge process and reduces the irreversible capacity. As a result, the Ti doping strategy provides a simple and effective method for designing and developing high-performance layered oxide cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Here, Ni2+-doped Na2Ti6O13 nanotubes (NNTONT) were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal ultrasound method. It could be found that Na2Ti6O13 partly transformed to TiO2 with the addition of Ni2+, and affected the electrochemical properties of sodium ion batteries (SIBs). When the added Ni source got to 40 wt% (NNTONT-40), the capacity of charge-discharge approached the best value: 130.4 mAh/g after 100 cycles at 1C (1C = 177 mA g-1 in this paper), and increased by 41 % compared with undoped NTONT (92.2 mAh/g), and increased by 76 % even at a high rate (10C) after 1000 cycles. Subsequently, the analyses of CV (cyclic voltammetry), EIS (AC impedance spectrum) and GITT (galvanostatic intermittent titration technique) confirmed that Ni2+-doping resulted in lower Na+ insertion-extraction voltage, smaller charge transfer resistance and higher ion diffusion rate and lager BET specific surfaces. Therefore, Ni2+-doping is an effective strategy to improve the capacity, rate performance and energy density, which is a promising SIBs' anode material.

Abstract:In this work, the impact of oxygen vacancies and nitrogen-doped carbon coating on the sodium-ion storage properties of anatase TiO2 has been demonstrated. Oxygen vacancies and nitrogen-doped carbon coating were introduced simultaneously by the calcination of core-shell structured TiO2 spheres in a reducing atmosphere. Compared to the anatase TiO2 with and without oxygen vacancies, TiO2-x@NC exhibits much better electrochemical performance in the storage of sodium ions. A high reversible capacity of 245.6 mA h g-1 is maintained at 0.1 A g-1 after 200 cycles, and a high specific capacity of 155.6 mA h g-1 is achieved at a high rate of 5.0 A g-1. The significantly improved electrochemical performance of the core-shell structured anatase TiO2 spheres is attributed to the synergistic effect of the oxygen vacancies in the anatase lattice and surface nitrogen-doped carbon coating. This work provides an efficient strategy for improving the electrochemical performance of metal-oxide-based electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries.
Self-doping of Ti3+ into Na2Ti3O7 Increases Both Ion and Electron Conductivity As a High-Performance Anode Material for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:As a safe, low-voltage anode material, in recent years, Na2Ti3O7 has become regarded as a highly alternative negative material for high energy room-temperature sodium ion batteries. However, its poor ion and electron conductivity produces very poor electrochemical performance of Na2Ti3O7, therefore greatly limiting its practical application in future scalable utilization. We report here a self-doping of Ti3+ into the Na2Ti3O7 electrode material, through a very simple post heat-treatment process, that is, annealing the Na2Ti3O7 precursor at an argon atmosphere containing 5% H-2. By XPS characterization, it is confirmed that Ti3+ is successfully doped into Na2Ti3O7. Benefiting from this self-doped Ti3+ with larger ionic radius and better electronic conductivity, the obtained Na2Ti3O7 demonstrates improved electron conductivity and ion diffusion properties. Combined with a carbon coating, this self-doped Na2Ti3O7 electrode material exhibits superior electrochemical performance to that of non-doped electrode, e.g., this Na2Ti3O7 sample could delivers a specific capacity of 187.8 and 51.9 mAh g(-1) from 0.1C to 10C at various rate of discharge, respectively. When recycled back to 0.1C, it can still reach 153 mAh g(-1). Compared with numerous reported nanoscale means, we believe this approach is practical and productive, and may extend to other ti-based electrode materials. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V.
