Abstract:Optical thermometry has attracted growing consideration due to its outstanding performance. In this research, precursor glass with compositions of 50SiO2-20Al2O3-30CaF2-0.5ErF3-1YbF3 and the corresponding CaF2 glass ceramic were prepared for optical temperature sensing comparison. A large enhancement in upconversion luminescence originated from thermally coupled energy levels (2H11/2 and 4S3/2) and 4F9/2 was confirmed in the transparent glass ceramic (GC). Importantly, the temperature-dependent upconversion fluorescence intensity ratios of glass and GC were investigated from 303 K to 573 K under a 980 nm laser with constant pumping power. It was found that GC shows weaker optical thermometry ability than the precursor glass in terms of temperature sensitivity, the maximum relative sensitivity of GC reached to 10.6 × 10-3 K-1 at 303 K while that of the glass is 11.15 × 10-3 K-1 at 303 K, the thermally coupled energy gap reduced about 34.2 cm-1 after crystallization, we attribute this change to the crystal field effect. Furthermore, the FIR value variation of glass shows weaker pumping power dependence than GC in terms of thermal effect induced by laser. The temperature-cycle measurements suggest that both glass and GC exhibit favorable thermal stability. Consequently, our results may contribute to enriching our understanding of the optical temperature sensing properties of glass and glass ceramic in other systems and provide a comprehensive perspective to design practical optical thermometry materials.

Abstract:A spectroscopic investigation of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped 50SiO(2)-20Al(2)O(3)-30CaF(2) glasses and transparent glass ceramics containing CaF2 nanocrystals is presented. The formation of CaF2 nanocrystals in the glass ceramic was confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Judd-Ofelt parameters of the Er3+ ions in the glass and glass ceramic have been calculated; they suggested that Er3+ ions had been incorporated into CaF2 nanocrystals in the glass ceramics. The upconversion luminescence intensity of the Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped glass ceramic was much stronger than that of the Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped glass. The upconversion luminescence mechanism has been ascribed to a two-photon absorption process for the green and red luminescence and a three-photon absorption process for the blue luminescence.

Abstract:A series of Yb3+/Er3+ codoped transparent oxyfluoride glass ceramics with various amounts of Yb3+ have been successfully fabricated and characterized. Under 980nm laser prompting, the samples produce intense red, green and blue up-conversion emissions, and the emission intensities increase with Yb3+ concentration and heat treatment temperature. Before losing good transparency in the visible region, optimum emission intensities are obtained for the sample with 25mol% of Yb3+ at a heat treatment temperature of 680°C. A possible up-conversion mechanism is proposed from the dependence of emission intensities on pumping power. The fluorescence intensity ratio between the two thermally coupled levels 2H11/2 versus 4S3/2 was measured with the laser output power of 57mW to avoid the possible laser induced heating effect. The fluorescence intensity ratio values in the temperature range from 295K to 723K can be well fitted with the equation: A exp (−∆E/kBT), where A = 6.79 and ∆E=876cm−1. The relative temperature sensitivity at 300K was evaluated to be 1.4% K−1. All the results suggest that the Yb3+/Er3+ codoped CaF2 glass ceramics is an efficient up-conversion material with potential in optical fiber temperature sensing.

Abstract:The traditional melt quenching method was used to successfully prepare transparent glass ceramics (GCs) containing Ba3Gd2F12: Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals. The structure and morphology characteristics of the nanocrystals were studied and confirmed by X-ray diffraction, selected-area electron diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. Under 980 nm excitation, the influence of Er3+ concentration, the heat treatment temperature of the GCs, and the pump power of laser on the upconverted luminescent properties were systematically discussed. GCs have a longer lifetime and higher emission intensity compared to precursor glass. In addition, the temperature dependence of fluorescence intensity ratio based on the thermal coupling energy levels of Er3+ was studied. FIR changes monotonously with temperature, and at 296 K, the relative sensitivity of the GCs sample reaches its maximum value (1.12% K−1). The results show that the GC embedded with Ba3Gd2F12: Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals may be a promising candidate for optical temperature sensors.

Abstract:The optical thermometry based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) method overcomes many disadvantages of traditional contact temperature measurement, and appropriate host materials can improve the temperature sensing sensitivity. Herein, Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped YOF glass ceramics (GC) were prepared, and the luminescence and temperature sensing properties were researched under 980 nm excitation with different pump power. The FIR of thermal couple energy level (TCEL) and non-thermal couple energy level (NTCEL) was used to evaluate the temperature sensing sensitivity. The higher pump power results in a decrease in relative sensitivity (SR) due to the thermal effect and increased rate of energy transfer and non-radiative relaxation process between dopants and host. The maximum relative sensitivity of this sample reaches 1.59 x 10-2 K-1 at 310 K with a pump power of 0.2 W, which shows that this GC is a prospective application in optical thermometry.

Abstract:Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped transparent oxyfluoride glass ceramics (GC) have been successfully fabricated and characterized for the purpose of optical thermometry by measuring the green upconverted fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) between the two thermally coupled levels (2H11/2 and 4S3/2). The green upconverted emissions in the GC are enhanced by 15times compared to that of the precursor glass. The dependence of the FIR on temperature ranging from 298K to 693K is well fitted with an exponential function by using an effective energy difference of 775cm−1. Owing to its low phonon energy and high thermal stability, an improved measurement accuracy and widened operating temperature range can be achieved with the GC sample, suggesting that transparent glass ceramics containing NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals are promising for application as optical-fiber temperature sensors.

Abstract:The Er3+/Yb3+ co‐doped transparent Gd2Te6O15 glass‐ceramics (GCs) generates three intense up‐conversion emission at 524 nm (2H11/2→4I15/2), 546 nm (4S3/2→4I15/2) and 658 nm (4F9/2→4I15/2) under the excitation of 980 nm laser. The optical thermometry properties of Er3+ ions at two thermally coupled energy levels (2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2) were explored. The 0.25 mol% Er2O3 and 2.0 mol% Yb2O3 co‐doped Gd2Te6O15 GCs provide an excellent Sr value of 1.22% K−1 and a great repeatability of 98.07%. These results suggest that the Er3+/Yb3+ co‐doped Gd2Te6O15 GCs have the potential for optical thermometry. The Er3+/Yb3+ co‐doped tellurite glasses and glass‐ceramics (GCs) containing the Gd2Te6O15 phase were successfully fabricated via the conventional melting‐quenching technique followed by a crystallization regime. The Er3+/Yb3+ co‐doped tellurite glasses generated intense up‐conversion green (524 and 546 nm) and red (658 nm) emissions when stimulated by a 980 nm laser. The up‐conversion green emission intensity increased by 68 and 46 times with the increase of the Yb3+/Er3+ ratio, and the optimal Yb3+/Er3+ ratio was found to be 8:1. The surface crystallization process of the Gd2Te6O15 GCs was confirmed through analysis of crystallization kinetics and microscopic morphology. The up‐conversion luminescence and lifetime of Er3+ ions were enhanced by the precipitation of low‐phonon‐energy Gd2Te6O15 crystals. The GC sample crystallized at 480°C for 4 h showed the highest luminescence intensity. The optical thermometry properties of Er3+ ions at thermally coupled energy levels (2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2) were explored. The Gd2Te6O15 GCs co‐doped with 0.25 mol% Er2O3 and 2.0 mol% Yb2O3 exhibited an excellent temperature relative sensitivity (Sr) of 1.22% K−1 at 293 K and a great repeatability of 98.07%. These results suggest that the Er3+/Yb3+ co‐doped Gd2Te6O15 GCs show promise for optical thermometry.

Abstract:Optical temperature measurement overcomes certain limitations associated with traditional contact methods. Fluorescence Intensity Ratio (FIR) technology is often used in optical temperature measurement. Furthermore, selecting appropriate host materials can increase temperature-sensing sensitivity. The conventional melt quenching method forms transparent glass-ceramics (GCs) efficiently precipitated with GdOF: Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) are used to examine and validate the structural and morphological characteristics of the nanocrystals. Under 980 nm excitation, the impacts of laser pumping power of GCs, Yb3+/Er3+ concentration, and heat treatment temperature on the upconversion luminescence properties are systematically examined. The sensitivity of temperature sensing is evaluated through the FIR of non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) and thermally coupled levels (TCLs). Abstract:Transparent Er3+ doped glass-ceramics containing KEr3F10:Er3+ nanocrystals were prepared via the traditional melt-quenching technique. The micro-structures, optical properties and up-conversion luminescence behaviors of the Er3+ doped glass-ceramics were systemically studied using X-ray diffraction, absorption and up-conversion luminescence spectra. Under the excitation of a laser at 980 nm, the intensity of red emission of the glass-ceramics increases more than 70 times after heat treatment compared with that of the precursor glass ceramic. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity ratio of the thermally coupled energy levels (2H11/2 and 4S3/2) shows a good linear relationship with temperature and maintains relatively high sensitivities of 0.398% per K at 303-573 K, which indicates that the glass ceramics have promising applications in temperature detection.

Abstract:Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped germanium silicate oxyfluoride glasses of 30SiO2–20GeO2–15Al2O3–5B2O3–30CaF2 were prepared by a melting-quenching method.The samples were characterized by polycrystalline X-ray diffraction,fluorescence spectroscopy and thermal analysis,respectively.The results show that the glass transition temperature Tg and Tx–Tg(Tx is glass first crystallization temperature) both decrease as the content of Er2O3 increases from 0.5% in mole to 2.0%.The red luminescence intensity order of magnitude increases from 103 to 105 when the content of Yb2O3 increases from 1.5% in mole to 4.5%.The upconversion luminescence intensity of Er does not change significantly after heat-treated at 760 ℃ for 12 h.

Abstract:The up-conversion luminescence and near infrared luminescence of the Er3+ in transparent oxyfluoride glass-ceramics have been investigated. The formation of PbF2 nano-crystals in the glass was confirmed by XRD. From optical absorption spectra, the oscillator strengths for several transitions of the Er3+ in the glass and glass-ceramic have been obtained and then the Judd–Ofelt parameters were calculated by a least squares fitting. The split near infrared emission peaks of the Er3+ ions in the glass-ceramics can be observed because the Er3+ ions have entered into crystalline environment of the β-PbF2 nano-crystals. The up-conversion luminescence intensity of the Er3+ in the glass-ceramics can be observed to be much stronger than that in the glasses. The dependence of the up-conversion luminescence intensity on the current of the LD laser used as excited source indicated that the transition mechanism of the up-conversion luminescence can be ascribed to two-photon absorption process.

Abstract:In this paper, we present results concerning the fabrication and characterization of glass-ceramics based on chalcolialide for application as laser host materials. The objective is to develop a highly efficient host material for rare-earth doping. The studied system is Ga-Ge-S-CsCl with Er3+ ions as doping elements. Glass-ceramics have been prepared by thermal treatment of the base glass. The evolution of the optical transmission versus annealing time and temperature has been investigated. Preliminary up-conversion measurement of Er3+ were performed. Glass ceramics show higher luminescence efficiency as compared to the base glass. Nano-crystalline phases have been generated in well-controlled experimental conditions, so that crystals with reproducible size smaller than 50 nm could be achieved.

Abstract:A Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped transparent oxyfluoride glass ceramic containing BaF2 nanocrystals has been prepared. The formation of BaF2 nanocrystals in the glass ceramic was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Intense upconversion luminescence in the Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped glass ceramic could be observed. Stark splitting of the Er3+ upconversion luminescence peaks in the glass ceramic indicated that Er3+ and Yb3+ had been incorporated into the BaF2 nanocrystals. Near infrared luminescence decay curves showed that the Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped glass ceramic had higher luminescence efficiency than the precursor glass.
