Abstract:Upon either photolysis or pyrolysis, carbonyl azide can eliminate molecular nitrogen along with the formation of isocyanate. Though two different pathways (namely stepwise versus concerted) have been proposed, the detailed decomposition mechanism is still elusive to date. Herein, we have employed combined electronic structure calculations and nonadiabatic dynamics simulations to study the radiationless deactivation and rearrangement mechanisms of FC(O)N-3 in the S-3, S-2, S-1, and S-0 states in an argon matrix. On the basis of QM(CASPT2)/MM calculations, we found that, upon 193 nm irradiation, the excited-state decay of FC(O)N-3 from the S-3 state via S-2 and S-1 to the S-0 state is an ultrafast process and could be completed within 100 fs, and a subsequent Curtius rearrangement occurs in the period of similar to 300 fs; the elimination of N-2 and the formation of fluorocarbonyl nitrene FC(O)N could take place in both S-1 and S-0 states rather than in higher excited states; the isomerization from FC(O)N to FNCO involves a stepwise mechanism and could only be found in the S-0 state. This mechanistic scenario has been verified by both electronic structure calculations and full-dimensional trajectory-based "on the fly'' QM(CASPT2)/MM nonadiabatic dynamics simulations. Finally, the currently calculated results provide important mechanistic insights for similar carbonyl azides.

Abstract:The photoinduced rearrangement reaction mechanism of 1,2,3-thiadiazole remains experimentally elusive. Two possible mechanisms have been proposed to date. The first is a stepwise mechanism via a thiocarbene intermediate; the second is an excited-state concerted rearrangement mechanism. Herein we have adopted both the electronic structure calculations and nonadiabatic dynamics simulations to study the photoinduced rearrangement reactions of 1,2,3-thiadiazole in the S2, S1, and S0 states in solution. On the basis of QM(CASPT2)/MM [quantum mechanics(complete active space self-consistent field second-order perturbation theory)/molecular mechanics] calculations, we have found that (1) the thiocarbene intermediate is not stable; thus, the stepwise mechanism should be unfavorable; (2) the excited-state decay from the S2 via S1 to S0 state is ultrafast and completed within ca. 200 fs; therefore, both the S2 and S1 states should not have a long enough time for the excited-state rearrangements. Instead, we have computationally proposed a modified photoinduced rearrangement mechanism. Upon irradiation, the S2 state is first populated (114.0 kcal/mol), followed by an ultrafast S2 → S1 → S0 excited-state decay along the S-N bond fission, which eventually leads to a very "hot" intermediate with the S-N bond broken (18.3 kcal/mol). Then, thermal rearrangements to thioketene, thiirene, and ethynethiol occur in a concerted asynchronous way. This mechanistic scenario has been verified by full-dimensional trajectory-based nonadiabatic dynamics simulations at the QM(CASPT2)/MM level. Finally, our present computational work provides experimentally interesting mechanistic insights into the photoinduced rearrangement reactions of cyclic and acyclic diazo compounds.

Abstract:As the prototype Curtius rearrangement reaction, carbamoyl azide decomposes into aminoisocyanate and molecular nitrogen. However, the key intermediate carbamoylnitrene was previously undetected, even though the decomposition of carbamoyl azides has been studied frequently since its discovery in the 1890s. Upon ArF laser (λ=193 nm) photolysis, the stepwise decomposition of the two simplest carbamoyl azides H2 NC(O)N3 and Me2 NC(O)N3, isolated in solid noble gas matrices, occurs with the formation of the corresponding carbamoylnitrenes H2 NC(O)N and Me2 NC(O)N. Both triplet species are characterized for the first time by combining matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations. Subsequent visible-light irradiations cause efficient rearrangement of these nitrenes into the respective aminoisocyanates.
Contrasting Photolytic and Thermal Decomposition of Phenyl Azidoformate: the Curtius Rearrangement Versus Intramolecular C-H Amination.

Abstract:The decomposition of phenyl azidoformate, PhOC(O)N3, was studied by combining matrix isolation spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. Upon UV laser photolysis (193 and 266 nm), the azide isolated in cryogenic noble gas matrices (Ne and Ar, 2.8 K) decomposes into N2 and a novel oxycarbonylnitrene PhOC(O)N, which was identified by matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy (with 15N labeling) and EPR spectroscopy (|D/hc| = 1.620 cm-1 and |E/hc| = 0.024 cm-1). Subsequent visible-light irradiation (532 nm) causes rearrangement of the nitrene into phenoxy isocyanate PhONCO with complex secondary fragmentation (PhO· + ·NCO) and radical recombination species in matrices. The observation of PhONCO provides solid evidence for the Curtius rearrangement of phenyl azidoformate. In sharp contrast, flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) of PhOC(O)N3 at 550 K yields N2 and exclusively the intramolecular C-H amination product 3H-benzooxazol-2-one. FVP at higher temperature (700 K) leads to further dissociation into CO2, HNCO, and ring-contraction products. To account for the very different photolytic and thermal decomposition products, the underlying mechanisms for the Curtius rearrangement (concerted and stepwise) of PhOC(O)N3 and the intramolecular C-H amination of the nitrene in both singlet and triplet states are discussed with the aid of quantum chemical calculations using the B3LYP, CBS-QB3, and CASPT2 methods.
Photoinduced nonadiabatic decay and dissociation dynamics of dimethylnitramine.

Abstract:Dimethylnitramine (DMNA) is a prototype system used in the investigation of the unimolecular decomposition mechanism of the nitramine-compound family. The photoinduced excited-state nonadiabatic processes and successive unimolecular dissociation of DMNA were investigated by trajectory surface-hopping dynamics at the semiempirical OM2/MRCI level. Two S-1/S-0 conical intersections (CI01 alpha and CI01 beta) were found to play essential roles in the nonadiabatic decay dynamics of DMNA. After the S-1 -> S-0 decay, the excess kinetic energy finally results in the cleavage of the N-N bond in the ground electronic state. The two reaction channels through CI01 alpha and CI01 beta show differences in molecular motions and decay features. The trajectories passing CI01 alpha can hop one or several times, and the intramolecular vibrational energy transfer in the ground state takes place before dissociation, whereas trajectories following the CI01 beta channel mainly dissociate directly after only one S-1 -> S-0 hop.
3-Fluoro-2h-azirine: Generation, Characterization, and Photochemistry.

Abstract:The elusive 3-fluoro-2H-azirine, cyclic NCH2CF, has been generated through the stepwise decomposition of the acryloyl azide CH2CFC(O)N-3 in an N-2-matrix at 10 K. The characterization of cyclic NCH2CF with matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy is supported by N-15 isotope labeling and the calculations with density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory. Upon irradiation at 193 nm, cyclic NCH2CF undergoes ring opening by forming the more stable nitrile isomer CH2FCN. In contrast to the photodecomposition reactions, the high-vacuum flash pyrolysis of CH2CFC(O)N-3 in the gas phase at 500 degrees C yields the Curtius rearrangement product CH2CFNCO along with secondary fragmentation to the atmospherically relevant fluorocarbonyl radical (FCO) and cyanomethyl radical (CH2CN). Calculations on the potential energy profile for the decomposition reactions of CH2CFC(O)N-3 demonstrate that the excessive energy, arising from the highly exothermic Curtius rearrangement of the azide, plays a key role in driving further dissociation reactions of CH2CFNCO by overcoming the formidable barriers (>50 kcal mol(-1)) under the pyrolysis conditions.
Theoretical Study on the Photochemistry of Furoylazides: Curtius Rearrangement and Subsequent Reactions.

Abstract:Organic azides are an efficient source of nitrenes, which serve as vigorous intermediates in many useful organic reactions. In this work, the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and its second-order perturbation (CASPT2) methods were employed to study the photochemistry of 2-furoylazide 1 and 3-furoylazide 5, including the Curtius rearrangement to two furylisocyanates (3 and 7) and subsequent reactions to the final product cyanoacrolein 9. Our calculations show that the photoinduced Curtius rearrangement of the two furoylazides takes place through similar stepwise mechanisms via two bistable furoylnitrenes 2 and 6. However, the decarbonylation and ring-opening process of 7 to 9 prefers a stepwise mechanism involving the 3-furoylnitrene intermediate 8, while 3 to 9 goes in a concerted asynchronous way without the corresponding 2-furoylnitrene intermediate 4. Importantly, we revealed that several conical intersections play key roles in the photochemistry of furoylazides. Our results are not only consistent and also make clear the experimental observations (X. Zeng, et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2018, 140, 10-13), but additionally provide important information on the chemistry of furoylazides and nitrenes.
Photoinduced C-N Bond Cleavage in 2-Azido-1,3-diphenyl-propan-1-one Derivatives: Photorelease of Hydrazoic Acid.

Abstract:Photolysis of 3-azido-1,3-diphenyl-propan-1-one (1a) in toluene yields 1,3-diphenyl-propen-1-one (2), whereas irradiation of 3-azido-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-diphenyl-propan-1-one (1b) results in the formation of mainly 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-diphenyl-propan-1-one. Laser flash photolysis (308 nm) of 1a,b in acetonitrile reveals a transient absorption (lambda max = approximately 310 nm) due to the formation of radicals 4a and 4b, respectively, which have lifetimes of approximately 14 micros at ambient temperature. TD-DFT calculations (B3LYP/6-31+G(d)) reveal that the first and second excited states of the triplet ketone (T1K (n,pi*) and T2K (pi,pi*)) in azide 1a are almost degenerate, at approximately 74 and 76 kcal/mol above the ground state (S0), respectively. Similarly, azide 1b has T1K and T2K 75 and 82 kcal/mol above S0, respectively. The calculated transition state for cleaving the C-N bond is located 71 and 74 kcal/mol above S0 in azides 1a and 1b, respectively. The calculated bond dissociation energies for breaking the C-N bond are 55 and 58 kcal/mol for azides 1a and 1b, respectively, making C-N bond breakage accessible from T1K in azides 1 at ambient temperature. In comparison, the irradiation of azides 1 in argon matrices at 14 K lead to the formation of the corresponding triplet alkyl nitrenes (1-n), via intramolecular energy transfer from T2K. The characterization of 1-n was supported by isotope labeling, IR spectroscopy, and molecular modeling.
Thermally Persistent Carbonyl Nitrene: Fc(O)N

Abstract:Transient carbonyl nitrenes RC(O)N, formed during thermal- or photoinduced decomposition of carbonyl azides RC(O)N-3, are highly liable to the Curtius rearrangement, producing isocyanates RNCO in almost quantitative yield. Contrary to common belief, we found a thermally persistent triplet carbonyl nitrene, FC(O)N, that can be produced by flash pyrolysis of FC(O)N-3 in 49% yield. The computed CBS-QB3 activation barrier for the thermal decomposition of FC(O)N-3 to FC(O)N is 29 kJ mol(-1) lower than that for a concerted pathway producing FNCO.

Abstract:On-the-fly ab initio molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the decay dynamics of photo-excited 6-azauracil. The Zhu-Nakamura trajectory surface hopping method was used to determine the nonadiabatic transition across different electronic states. The lifetime of the photoexcited S2 state was estimated to be 201 fs, which is in line with the experimentally measured lifetime (Hua et al., 2015). The results of the molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the internal conversion from S2 to S1 is facilitated by the destabilization of the ground state caused by molecular ring puckering.

Ab Initio Implementation Of Quantum Trajectory Mean-Field Approach And Dynamical Simulation Of The N2co Photodissociation

Abstract:In this work, the recently introduced quantum trajectory mean-field (QTMF) approach is implemented and employed to explore photodissociation dynamics of diazirinone (N2CO), which are based on the high-level ab initio calculation. For comparison, the photodissociation process has been simulated as well with the fewest-switches surface hopping (FSSH) and the ab initio multiple spawning (AIMS) methods. Overall, the dynamical behavior predicted by the three methods is consistent. The N2CO photodissociation at lambda > 335 nm is an ultrafast process and the two C-N bonds are broken in a stepwise way, giving birth to CO and N-2 as the final products in the ground state. Meanwhile, some noticeable differences were found in the QTMF, FSSH, and AIMS simulated time constants for fission of the C-N bonds, excited-state lifetime, and nonadiabatic transition ratios in different intersection regions. These have been discussed in detail. The present study provides a clear evidence that direct ab initio QTMF approach is one of the reliable tools for simulating nonadiabatic dynamics processes. Abstract:Difluoroacetyl azide, CHF2C(O)N-3, has been synthesized and characterized. The azide decomposes slowly at room temperature (300 K) into N-2 and difluoromethyl isocyanate CHF2NCO, which has also been isolated as neat substance and fully characterized. The elusive nitrene intermediate CHF2C(O)N in the stepwise Curtiusrearrangement of the azide is tentatively identified by IR spectroscopy during the 193 nm laser photolysis of the azide in solid Ne matrix at 2.8 K. Unexpectedly, flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) of CHF2C(O)N-3 at 500 K yields a novel carbonyl isocyanide FC(O)NC with N-2, HF, FCN, CO, and traces of CHF2NCO. Subsequent irradiation (193 nm) of the pyrolysis products results in the rearrangement of FC(0)NC to FC(O)CN. According to the quantum chemical calculations (B3LYP and CCSD(T)), the azide CHF2C(O)N-3 prefers concerted Curtius rearrangement with minor contribution of the stepwise decomposition. The thermally generated CHF2NCO eliminates HF and forms FC(O)NC solely under the pyrolysis conditions, whereas, no HF-elimination occurs to isolated CHF2NCO even at 1000 K due to a formidable activation barrier.
Photodecomposition of 1H-Pyrrole Carbonyl Azides: Direct Observation of Singlet 1H-Pyrrole Carbonyl Nitrenes and Triplet 1H-3-pyrrylnitrene

Abstract:The two simplest pyrroylazides, namely 1H‐pyrrole‐2‐carbonyl azide (1) and 1H‐pyrrole‐3‐carbonyl azide (5), have been fully characterized by vibrational spectroscopy (IR and Raman) and X‐ray crystallography. The photo‐induced stepwise decomposition of both azides has been studied by combining matrix‐isolation IR spectroscopy (N2 matrix at 15 K) and quantum chemical calculations. Upon laser irradiation at 266 nm, both pyrroylazides split off molecular nitrogen and yield the corresponding pyrroylnitrenes (2 and 6) in the closed‐shell singlet state. Subsequent irradiation of 2 with UV‐light (365 nm) results in Curtius rearrangement to 2‐pyrrylisocyanate (3), as followed by laser‐induced (266 nm) CO‐elimination and the formation of ring‐opening product imines (9) in Z and E‐conformations. Similar rearrangement of 6 to 7 occurs under the green‐light (532 nm) irradiation, and the latter eliminates CO and furnishes the elusive 1H‐3‐pyrrole nitrene (8) in the triplet state. The first‐time spectroscopic identification of pyrroylnitrenes (2 and 6) and 3‐pyrrylnitrene (8) has been supported by 15N‐labeling experiments and quantum chemical calculations.
Imaging Reversible and Irreversible Structural Evolution in Photoexcited 2,4-Difluoroaniline.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate the capability of femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging to visualize the reversible and irreversible structural evolution in electronically excited 2,4-difluoroaniline. As a coherent superposition of out-of-plane vibrational motions is created following 299.8 nm excitation, the molecular geometry alters periodically, thus modulating the photoionization channel. The reversible nuclear motion between distinct geometries is directly observed as the reverse beats in the time-dependent photoelectron spectra. Moreover, with the molecule highly vibrationally excited at 289.0 nm, the exponential decrease/increase changes in photoelectron signal provide a physically intuitive and complete picture of the irreversible geometry rearrangement away from a nonplanar geometry in the vertical Franck-Condon region toward the planar minimum.
Nonadiabatic Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics of Photoisomerization in Bridged Azobenzene

Abstract:The photoisomerization mechanisms of bridged azobenzene are investigated by means of surface hopping dynamics simulations based on the Zhu-Nakamura theory. In the geometry optimizations and potential energy surface calculations, four minimum-energy conical intersections between the ground state and the lowest excited state are found to play important roles in the trans-cis and cis-trans isomerization processes. The trans-cis photoisomerization proceeds through two minimum-energy conical intersections. Ultrafast pedal motion of the N atoms and twisting of phenyl rings around their N-C bonds allows the molecule to move to a minimum-energy conical intersection, after which surface hopping from S(1) to S(0) occurs. In the S(0) state, further rotation occurs around the N=N bond and two N-C bonds until the azo moiety and phenyl rings complete their isomerization. Finally, the cis form is achieved by subsequent adjustment of the ethylene bridge. In the cis-trans photodynamics, there is one rotational pathway, in the middle of which two CIs are responsible for the surface hopping to the S(0) state. After the nonadiabatic transition, the molecule reaches the trans form through a barrierless pathway and the two phenyl rings and the additional bridge complete their reorientation almost at the same time.
Detailed mechanism for photoinduced cytosine dimerization: a semiclassical dynamics simulation.

Abstract:Semiclassical dynamics simulation is used to study dimerization of two stacked cytosine molecules following excitation by ultrashort laser pulses (25 fs fwhm, Gaussian, 4.1 eV photon energy). The initial excited state was found to form an ultrashort exciton state, which eventually leads to the formation of an excimer state by charge transfer. When the interbase distance, defined as an average value of C-5-C-5' and C-6-C-6' CZ, becomes less than 3 angstrom, charge recombination occurs due to strong intermolecular interaction, eventually leading to an avoided crossing within 20-30 is. Geometries at the avoided crossing, with average intermolecular distance of about 2.1 angstrom, are in accord with CASSCF/CASPT2 calculations. Results indicate that the C-2-N-1-C-6-C-5 and C-2'-N-1'-C-6'-C-5' dihedral angles' bending vibrations play a significant role in the vibronic coupling between the HOMO and LUMO, which leads to a nonadiabatic transition to the electronic ground state.

Abstract:The photochemistry of matrix isolated (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) azide, CF3SO2N3, has been studied at low temperatures. Upon ArF laser irradiation (λ = 193 nm), the azide eliminates N2 and furnishes triplet [(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]nitrene, CF3SO2N, which has been characterized by IR and EPR spectroscopy. Upon subsequent UV light irradiation (λ = 260-400 nm) the nitrene converts to CF3N═SO2 and CF3S(O)NO through a Curtius-type rearrangement. Further two new species CF2N═SO2F and FSNO were identified together with CF2NF, SO2, F2CO, CF3NO, and SO as side products. In addition, triplet nitrene CF3N was detected by its EPR and IR spectra. The complex stepwise photodecomposition of matrix isolated CF3SO2N3 is discussed in terms of the observed photolysis products and quantum chemical calculations.
Nonadiabatic simulation study of photoisomerization of azobenzene: Detailed mechanism and load-resisting capacity

Abstract:Nonadiabatic dynamical simulations were carried out to study cis-to-trans isomerization of azobenzene under laser irradiation and/or external mechanical loads. We used a semiclassical electron-radiation-ion dynamics method that is able to describe the coevolution of the structural dynamics and the underlying electronic dynamics in a real-time manner. It is found that azobenzene photoisomerization occurs predominantly by an out-of-plane rotation mechanism even under a nontrivial resisting force of several tens of piconewtons. We have repeated the simulations systematically for a broad range of parameters for laser pulses, but could not find any photoisomerization event by a previously suggested in-plane inversion mechanism. The simulations found that the photoisomerization process can be held back by an external resisting force of 90 - 200 pN depending on the frequency and intensity of the lasers. This study also found that a pure mechanical isomerization is possible from the cis state if the azobenzene molecule is stretched by an external force of 1250 -1650 pN. Remarkably, the mechanical isomerization first proceeds through a mechanically activated inversion, and then is diverted to an ultrafast downhill rotation that accomplishes the isomerization. Implications of these findings to azobenzene-based nanomechanical devices are discussed.
