Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Better understanding the determining factors of dynamic magnetic relaxation in polynuclear lanthanide based single‐molecule magnets (SMMs) remains a challenge due to the complexity of such architectures involving interactions between the magnetic centers. To address this issue, two structurally related heterometal DyIII2ZnII2 SMMs, [Zn2Dy2(L)4(Ac)2(DMF)(CH3OH)]·CH3OH·2H2O (1) and [Zn2Dy2(L)4(Ac)2(DMF)2]·4CH3CN (2) (H2L = (E)‐2‐((2‐hydroxy‐3‐methoxybenzylidene)amino)‐4‐methyphenol, DMF = N,N‐Dimethylformamide), are introduced and investigated. Through modifying the auxiliary ligands on one DyIII sites while retaining that on the other DyIII, the intramolecular magnetic interactions and relaxation dynamics in these two heterometallic‐DyIII2ZnII2 SMMs can be tuned, demonstrating dramatically change on the magnet relaxation behavior with energy barrier change from a negligible value for 1 to 305 K for 2. Ab initio calculations reveal that changing the coordination geometries on the DyIII sites can significantly affect the magnetic interactions as well as single‐ion anisotropy. Abstract:Abstract The relaxation time under zero field reflects the memory retention capabilities of single‐molecule magnets (SMMs) when used as storage devices. Intermolecular magnetic dipole interaction is ubiquitous in aggregates of magnetic molecules and can greatly influence relaxation times. However, such interaction is often considered harmful and challenging to manipulate in molecular solids, especially for high‐performance lanthanide single‐ion magnets (SIMs). By an elaborately designed combination of ion pairing and hydrogen bonding, we have synthesized two pseudo‐D5h SIMs with supramolecular arrangements of magnetic dipoles in staggered and side‐by‐side patterns, the latter of which exhibits a 104‐fold slower zero‐field relaxation time at 2 K. Intriguingly, the side‐by‐side complex exhibits a significantly accelerated magnetic relaxation upon diamagnetic dilution, contrary to the general trend observed in the staggered complex. This strongly reveals the presence of aggregation‐induced suppression of quantum tunneling in a side‐by‐side arrangement, which has not been observed in mononuclear SMMs. By leveraging ion‐pairing aggregation and converting to a side‐by‐side pattern, this study successfully demonstrates an approach to transform a harmful intermolecular dipole interaction into a beneficial one, achieving a τQTM of 980 s ranking among the best‐performance SMMs.

Abstract:Precise control of the crystal field and local symmetry around the paramagnetic spin center is crucial for the design and synthesis of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Herein, three mononuclear Dy(III)-based complexes, ([Dy(LN6)(CH3COO)2](BPh4)(CH2Cl2) (1), [Dy(LN6)(2,6-Cl-4-NO2-PhO)(H2O)2]2(PF6)2(H2O)(2,6-Cl-4-NO2-PhO)2 (2) and [Dy(LN6)(2,6-Cl-4-NO2-PhO)2](BPh4)(CH2Cl2)2 (3) (LN6 = N6-hexagonal plane accomplished by a neutral Schiff base ligand formed from 2,6-diacetylpyridine and ethylenediamine), are successfully isolated. In these complexes, the Dy(III) centers are coordinated with six neutral N atoms from the nonrigid equatorial ligand, while different oxygen-bearing ligands are arranged at the axial positions of the central ions through a gradual regularization of the axial ligands. As a result, the Dy(III) ions in three complexes exhibit various coordination geometries, forming ten-coordinate tetradecahedron for 1, nine-coordinate muffin configuration for 2 and distortedly eight-coordinate hexagonal bipyramid for 3. Magnetic studies reveal that all complexes perform no SIM behaviour under zero dc field, due to the predominant quantum tunneling of the magnetizations (QTM) which can be effectively suppressed by the additional dc fields. Experiments, coupled with theoretical calculations demonstrate that varying local symmetries and coordination geometries are synergistically responsible for the disparities of the QTM and uniaxial anisotropy, resulting in notably different magnetic properties.

Abstract:Lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets (Ln-SMMs) hold unique potential for applications in spintronic devices, ultra-high-density information storage and quantum information processing due to their distinctive structure and large intrinsic magnetic anisotropy. Dysprosium-based SMMs (Dy-SMMs) have emerged as extraordinary candidates for constructing SMMs with high-performance thanks to their large magnitude quantum number and anisotropy. However, quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) in mononuclear systems results in a decrease of zero-field magnetization and a decrease or even loss of coercive force. The optimal solution to this issue is to increase the number of lanthanide ions in the SMM system, owing to the magnetic exchange interaction within the molecules that has a positive effect on suppressing QTM. Among multinuclear-based Dy-SMMs, dinuclear dysprosium SMMs (Dy 2 -SMMs) have been selected as the simplest model to investigate the effect of magnetic interaction on QTM. However, previous studies have not clearly elucidated how magnetic exchange in the Dy 2 -SMM system affects slow magnetic relaxation. Hence, this review attempts to elucidate the intricate relaxation mechanism of Dy 2 -SMMs. The strategies for designing and manipulating Dy 2 -SMMs are also discussed in detail. Meanwhile, the development of Dy 2 -SMM-based multifunctional materials is summarized in this review. This study investigates the relaxation mechanisms and magneto-structural correlations in Dy 2 -SMMs, offering strategies for the design and synthesis of high-performance Dy 2 -SMMs (HP-Dy 2 -SMMs) to advance research in this field.

Abstract:In the pursuit of high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs), incorporating intramolecular magnetic coupling emerges as a pivotal strategy. Among these, d-f SMMs have garnered significant attention due to their remarkable versatility, which lies in their ability to tune coordination environments and facilely substitute metal centers. However, achieving performance-centric d-f SMMs through the synergistic interplay between highly anisotropic f ions and d-f magnetic interactions remains a formidable challenge. While mononuclear hexagonal bipyramidal (D6h) DyIII SMMs have been successfully isolated, the exploration of d-f SMMs featuring D6h-lanthanide metal centers remains uncharted territory. In this study, we employed planar bipodal ligands in conjunction with “staple-like” axial phenoxide ligands to synthesize the first hexagonal bipyramidal d-f SMM. Remarkably, this compound exhibits alternating-current magnetic susceptibilities peaking up to 68 K with an energy barrier surpassing 1,200 K, thus establishing a new benchmark within the heterometallic d-f SMM landscape inclusive of complexes with diamagnetic d metals and paramagnetic f ions. Notably, the ferromagnetic interaction at the d-f sites engenders oscillating relaxation times contingent on the magnetic field — a characteristic distinct from mononuclear SMMs. These findings shed light on a deliberate design approach for d-f SMMs, emphasizing the cooperative utilization of high-barrier lanthanide modules alongside d ions through magnetic interactions. This synergy significantly enhances and diversifies the magnetic dynamics of these intriguing molecular systems.
Slow Magnetic Relaxation in 8-Coordinate Mn(II) Compounds

Abstract:Design and synthesis of high-spin Mn(II)-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have not been well developed to a great extent, as compared with a large number of SMMs based on the other first row transition metal complexes. In light of our success in designing Fe(II), Co(II) and Fe(III)-based SMMs with high coordination number of 8, it is of great interest to design Mn(II) analogues with such a strategy. In this contribution, four Mn(II) compounds, [MnII(Ln)2](ClO4)2 (1-4) were obtained from reactions of neutral tetradentate ligands, L1-L4, with hydrated MnII(ClO4)2 (L1 = 2,9-bis(carbomethoxy)-1,10-phenanthroline, L2 = 2,9-bis(carbomethoxy)-2,2'-dipyridine, L3 = N2,N9-dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide, L4 = 6,6'-bis(2-(tert-butyl)-2H-tetrazol-5-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine). Their crystal structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography and it clearly shows that the Mn(II) centers in these compounds have an oversaturated coordination number of 8. Their magnetic properties have been investigated in detail; to our surprise, all of these Mn(II) compounds show interesting slow magnetic relaxation behaviors under an applied direct current field, although they have very small negative D values.

Abstract:Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) exhibit unique magnetic properties related to the molecular nature of these “isolated” coordination complexes. In this study, we investigate the influence of counterions on two macrocyclic dysprosium-based SMMs, namely, [DyLN6(OAc)2][OAc] (1) and [DyLN6(OAc)2][B(C6H5)4] (2) (LN6 = 2,7,13,18-tetramethyl-3,6,14,17,23,24-hexaazatricyclo[17.3.1.18,12]tetracosa 1(23),2,6,8,10,12(24),13,17,19,21-decaene, OAc = acetate), differing by the nature of the counterion. We demonstrate that the nature of the counterion indirectly modulates the degree of coordination geometry distortion, particularly in macrocycle folding, through subtle intermolecular interactions. This subsequently affects the slow relaxation dynamics, as supported by both magnetic and theoretical calculations. A noticeable decrease in the transverse magnetic anisotropy is observed for 2, attributed to a reduced degree of macrocycle distortion in the equatorial plane. Theoretical calculations further suggest a greater crystal-field splitting in 2 with the first excited state estimated to be twice as large in energy compared to 1. Both complexes exhibit magnetization relaxation dynamics primarily driven by a Raman process.

Auxiliary Rather Than Dominant. The Role of Direct Dy-S Coordination in Single-Molecule Magnet Unveiled via ab initio Study

Abstract:The role of Dy-S coordination in a single-molecule magnet (SMM) is investigated via an ab initio study in a group of mononuclear structures. The SMM performance of this group is well interpreted via a concise criterion consisting of long quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) time τQTM and high effective barrier for magnetic reversal Ueff. The best SMMs in the selected group, i.e., 1Dy (CCDC refcode: PUKFAF) and 2Dy (CCDC refcode: NIKSEJ), are just those holding the longest τQTM and the highest Ueff simultaneously. Further analysis based on the crystal field model and ab initio magneto-structural exploration indicates that the influence of Dy-S coordination on the SMM performance of 1Dy is weaker than that of axial Dy-O coordination. Thus, Dy-S coordination is more likely to play an auxiliary role rather than a dominant one. However, if placed at the suitable equatorial position, Dy-S coordination could provide important support for good SMM performance. Consequently, starting from 1Dy, we built two new structures where Dy-S coordination only exists at the equatorial position and two axial positions are occupied by strong Dy-O/Dy-F coordination. Compared to 1Dy and 2Dy, these new ones are predicted to have significantly longer τQTM and higher Ueff, as well as a nearly doubled blocking temperature TB. Thus, they are probable candidates of SMM having clearly improved performance.
Effect of the Transition Metal Ions on the Single-Molecule Magnet Properties in a Family of Air-Stable 3d–4f Ion-Pair Compounds with Pentagonal Bipyramidal Ln(III) Ions

Abstract:Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are expected to be promising candidates for the applications of high-density information storage materials and quantum information processing. Lanthanide SMMs have attracted considerable interest in recent years due to their excellent performance. It has always been interesting but not straightforward to study the relaxation and blocking mechanisms by embedding 3d ions into 4f SMMs. Here we report a family of air-stable 3d-4f ion-pair compounds, YFe (1), DyCr (2), DyFe (3), DyCo (4), and Dy0.04Y0.96Fe (5), composed of pentagonal bipyramidal (D5h) LnIII cations and transition metallocyanate anions. The ion-pair nature makes the dipole-dipole interactions almost the only component of the magnetic interactions that can be clarified and analytically resolved under proper approximation. Therefore, this family provides an intuitive opportunity to investigate the effects of 3d-4f and 4f-4f magnetic interactions on the behavior of site-resolved 4f SMMs. Dynamic magnetic measurements of 1 under a 4 kOe external field reveal slow magnetic relaxation originating from the isolated [FeIII]LS (S = 1/2) ions. Under zero dc field, compounds 2-5 show similar magnetic relaxation processes coming from the separated pentagonal bipyramidal (D5h) DyIII ions with high Orbach barriers of 592(5), 596(4), 595(3), and 606(4) K, respectively. Comparatively, both compounds 3 and 5 exhibit two distinct relaxation processes, respectively from the [FeIII]LS and DyIII [Ueff = 596(4) K for 3 and 610(7) K for 5] ions, under a 4 kOe dc field. The dipolar interactions between the neighboring TMIII (TM = transition metal, CrIII or [FeIII]LS) and DyIII ions were revealed to have little effect on the thermal relaxation in compounds 2, 3, and 5, or the coexistence of the two separate relaxation processes in compounds 3 and 5 under a 4 kOe dc field, but they significantly affect the quantum tunneling of magnetization and the magnetic hysteresis behavior of 2 and 3 at low temperatures compared to those of 4.

Abstract:A series of mononuclear lanthanide Zn-Dy-Zn type single-molecule magnets (SMMs) were synthesized and magnetically characterized. The four molecules ([Zn2(L1)2DyCl3]·2H2O (1), [Zn2(L1)2Dy(MeOH)Br3]·3H2O (2), [Zn2(L1)2Dy(H2O)Br2]·[ZnBr4]0.5 (3) and [Zn2(L2)2DyCl3]·2H2O (4)) all display remarkable magnetic relaxation behavior with a relatively high energy barrier and hysteresis temperature, despite possessing a low local geometry symmetry of the center Dy(iii) ions. Ab initio studies revealed that the symmetry of the charge distribution around the Dy(iii) ion is the key factor to determine the relaxation of the SMMs. The four complexes orient their magnetic easy axes along the negative charge-dense direction of the first coordination sphere. The entire molecular magnetic anisotropy was therefore controlled by a single substituent atom in the hard plane which consists of five coordination atoms (perpendicular to the easy axis), and the lower charge distribution on this hard plane in combination with the nearly coplanarity of the five coordination atoms ultimately lead to the prominent magnetic slow relaxation. This offers an efficient and rational method to improve the dynamic magnetic relaxation of the mononuclear lanthanide SMMs that usually possess a low local geometry symmetry around the lanthanide(iii) center.
Slow Magnetic Relaxation In A Mononuclear Eight-Coordinate Cobalt(Ii) Complex

Abstract:The quest for the single-molecular magnets (SMMs) based on mononuclear transition-metal complexes is focused on the low-coordinate species. No transition-metal complex with a coordination number of eight has been shown to exhibit SMM properties. Here the magnetic studies have been carried out for a mononuclear, eight-coordinate cobalt(II)-12-crown-4 (12C4) complex [Co-II(12C4)(2)](I-3)(2)(12C4) (1) with a large axial zero-field splitting. Magnetic measurements show field-induced, slow magnetic relaxation under an applied field of 500 Oe at low temperature. The magnetic relaxation time tau was fitted by the Arrhenius model to afford an energy barrier of U-eff = 17.0 cm(-1) and a preexponential factor of tau(0) = 1.5 X 10(-6) s. The work here presents the first example of the eight-coordinate, mononudear, 3d metal complex exhibiting the slow magnetic relaxation.

Abstract:Two mononuclear complexes containing a Dy(III) ion with eight- and nine-coordinate environments have been J successfully synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The coordination spheres of 1 and 2 exhibit the distorted spherical capped square antiprism and square antiprism geometries. Magnetic measurements reveal that both of the complexes show typical single-molecule magnetic behavior, and only complex 2 presents a butterfly hysteresis loop. Ab initio calculations also show the difference of the magnetic anisotropy of the Dy(III) ions in 1 and 2. The relationship between the coordination geometry and the magnetic property is discussed.

Complexes 1 and 2 exhibit remarkable magnetic relaxation behaviour with relatively high energy barriers in zero field (Ueff: 244 K for 1 and 211 K for 2) and notable hysteresis temperatures, despite the low local geometric symmetry around the central DyIII ions. The SMM performance of these complexes is further enhanced under an applied magnetic field, with Ueff increasing to 309 K for 1 and 269 K for 2, positioning them as elite members within the Zn-Dy SMM family. These findings emphasize the substantial influence of remote modulation on ZnII beyond the first coordination sphere of DyIII ions on their dynamic magnetic relaxation properties. Ab initio studies demonstrate that the relative orientation of the phenoxo-oxygen donor atoms around the DyIII ion is critical for determining the magnetic anisotropy and relaxation dynamics in these systems. Additionally, experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the coordination of the bridging acetate towards the hard plane, combined with significant distortion from the ideal ZnO2Dy diamond core arrangement caused by the acetate ion, results in low magnetic anisotropy in complex 3, thereby leading to field-induced SMM behaviour. Overall, this study unveils the effects of co-ligands on the SMM performance in a series of linear trinuclear Zn-Dy-Zn complexes, which exhibit low local geometric symmetry around the DyIII centres.

Abstract:Abstract Molecular systems known as single-molecule magnets (SMMs) exhibit magnet-like behaviour of slow relaxation of the magnetisation and magnetic hysteresis and have potential application in high-density memory storage or quantum computing. Often, their intrinsic magnetic properties are plagued by low-energy molecular vibrations that lead to phonon-induced relaxation processes, however, there is no straightforward synthetic approach for molecular systems that would lead to a small amount of low-energy vibrations and low phonon density of states at the spin-resonance energies. In this work, we apply knowledge accumulated over the last decade in molecular magnetism to nanoparticles, incorporating Er 3+ ions in an ultrasmall sub-3 nm diamagnetic NaYF 4 nanoparticle (NP) and probing the slow relaxation dynamics intrinsic to the Er 3+ ion. Furthermore, by increasing the doping concentration, we also investigate the role of intraparticle interactions within the NP. The knowledge gained from this study is anticipated to enable better design of magnetically high-performance molecular and bulk magnets for a wide variety of applications, such as molecular electronics.

Abstract:Dinuclear lanthanide complexes [((HB(pz)3)2Dy)2(μ-Th2An)] (1Dy) and [((HB(pz)3)2Dy)2(μ-ClCNAn)] (2Dy), based on the hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate (HBpz3-) scorpionate capping ligand and anilate (An2-) bridging linkers, namely homosubstituted dithiophene- and heterosubstituted chlorocyanoanilate, bearing electron-donating and withdrawing substituents at the 3,6-positions of the benzoquinone core, are reported. 1Dy shows an octacoordinated {N6O2} DyIII ion within a D4h distorted square antiprismatic coordination, an ideal geometry for Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior, given its oblate nature, whereas in 2Dy the octacoordinated DyIII ion adopts a D2d triangular dodecahedron geometry, while maintaining the same {N6O2} coordination sphere. Both complexes show field-induced single molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour, with tuning of the slow magnetic relaxation as a function of the nature of the substituents at the 3,6 positions of the anilate moiety. A comparison of the Arrhenius fitting parameters for 1Dy and 2Dy supports the hypothesis that square antiprismatic DyIII complexes, as 1Dy, exhibit higher energy barriers. This interpretation is supported by ab-initio calculations that also shed light on the crucial role of intermolecular dipolar interactions.

Abstract:Increasing both the energy barrier for magnetization reversal and the coercive field of the hysteresis loop are significant challenges in the field of single‐molecule magnets (SMMs). Coordination geometries of lanthanide ions and magnetic interactions between lanthanide ions are both important for guiding the magnetic behavior of SMMs. We report a high energy barrier of 657 K (457 cm −1 ) in a diamagnetic‐ion‐diluted lanthanide chain compound with a constrained bisphenoid symmetry ( D 2 d ); this energy barrier is substantially higher than the barrier of 567 K (394 cm −1 ) of the non‐diluted chain compound with intrachain ferromagnetic interactions. Although intrachain magnetic interaction lowers the energy barrier for magnetization reversal, it can greatly enhance the coercive fields and zero‐field remanence of the hysteresis loops, which is crucial for the rational design of high‐performance SMMs. Factors related to the coordination sphere of the lanthanide center, which govern the high magnetic relaxation barriers through the second excited Kramer's doublets and the magnetic interactions that affect the hysteresis loops, were revealed through ab initio calculations.
