Abstract:In this study, using gadolinium (Gd) as a dopant, Gd-WO3/Ag/Gd-WO3 (WGd-Ag-WGd) transparent conductive films with improved electrochromic (EC) and energy storage performance were fabricated on glass substrates by reactive sputtering. The EC performance and sheet resistance of WGd-Ag-WGd are shown to be sensitive to the concentration of the Gd dopant. The optimized structure for transparent conducting (TC) coating is obtained to be Gd-WO3 (52 nm)/Ag (12 nm)/Gd-WO3 (42 nm) with a luminous transmittance of 82.7% and a sheet resistance of 3.4 omega sq(-1) at a modest Gd doping concentration of 0.29 at%. Such a film (sample size of 1 cm x 3 cm) exhibits luminous transmittance modulation (Delta T-lum = 49.6%), high coloration efficiency (71.4 cm(2) C-1 at 633 nm), fast switching time (1.6 s for coloring and 3.2 s for bleaching time), and long-term cycling stability (2000 cycles) with an applied potential of +/- 1.0 V. By combining the film structure characterization and electrochemical analysis, such a decent performance can be attributed to the embedded island structured monoclinic Gd2O3 on the surface of WO3 which enhanced charge capacity and reaction kinetics compared with undoped amorphous WO3 films. Moreover, the WGd-Ag-WGd films showed superior capacitive capability with a maximum specific capacitance of 124.7 F g(-1) at 2 A g(-1), suggesting their potential application in electrochemical energy storage (ECES) devices.

Abstract:Construction of multifunctional photoelectrochemical energy devices is of great importance to energy saving. In this study, we have successfully prepared a mesoporous WO3 film on FTO glass via a facile dip-coating sol-gel method; the designed mesoporous WO3 film exhibited advantages including high transparency, good adhesion and high porosity. Also, multifunctional integrated energy storage and optical modulation ability are simultaneously achieved by the mesoporous WO3 film. Impressively, the mesoporous WO3 film exhibits a noticeable electrochromic energy storage performance with a large optical modulation up to 75.6% at 633 nm, accompanied by energy storage with a specific capacity of 75.3 mA h g-1. Furthermore, a full electrochromic energy storage window assembled with the mesoporous WO3 anode and PANI nanoparticle cathode is demonstrated with large optical modulation and good long-term stability. Our research provides a new route to realize the coincident utilization of optical-electrochemical energy.
Co-sputtering Construction of Gd-doped WO3 Nano-Stalagmites Film for Bi-Funcional Electrochromic and Energy Storage Applications

Abstract:Gd-doped WO3 nano-stalagmites (GW-NSs) film has been successfully prepared on indium-doped tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrates by co-sputtering deposition. Gd dopants can facilitate the vertically-aligned growth of WO3 nano-stalagmites on the WO3-nanoparticle seed layer. The microstructure analysis shows that the GW-NSs film with optimized aspect ratio and array density is fabricated with Gd/W = 0.6 % in atomic ratio. Such GW-NSs electrode (active area: 1 x 1.5 cm(2)) exhibits large transmittance modulation (Delta T = 52.7 % at 633 nm), high coloration efficiency (87.3 cm(2) C-1 at 633 nm), fast switching speed (5.9/13.1 s for coloration/bleaching), large diffusion coefficient (9.52 x 10(-10) cm(2) s(-1)) and long-term cycling stability (>2000) under an applied voltage of +/- 1.0 V, which can be attributed to a shorten Li+ diffusion distance and a large-area contact with the electrolyte. Importantly, the GW-NSs film also shows superior capacitive performance (calculated areal capacitance of 8.44 mF cm(-2) at 0.4 mA cm(-2)) and long-term cyclic stability (capacitance retention rate is 87.4 % after 2000 cycles). Furthermore, we fabricated the bifunctional smart window device combined with NiO counterpart electrode, which has the ability to visually monitor the level of stored energy from rapid and reversible coloration, indicating the potential applications of GW-NSs in both electrochromic and energy-storage fields.
Dual-band Electrochromic Film Based on Mesoporous H-Wo3/o-wo3·h2o/r-tio2 for High Performance Smart Windows

Abstract:Porous three-dimensional electrochromic films composed of orthorhombic WO3 center dot H2O, hexagonal WO3, and rutile TiO2 array (h-WO3/o-WO3 center dot H2O/r-TiO2, WWT) were controllably synthesized by a facile two-step hydrothermal technique. Due to the hydrophilicity and array structure of TiO2, the generation of high-quality o-WO3 center dot H2O was significantly promoted, which can reduce the energy barrier to ion diffusion and increase the ion flux by introducing structural water in the interlayer region of WO3. The formation of porous 3-dimensional structure and WO3-TiO2 heterojunction increases the effective contact area, alters the distribution of energy bands, and promotes charge transport, resulting in significantly improved electrochromic properties. An impressive dual -band electrochromic performance with high optical modulation of 68.4% at 633 nm and 59.8% at 1600 nm was achieved in WWT film, respectively, with a fast switching speed (11s/3.3 s at 633 nm and 3 s/9.4 s at 1600 nm for coloring/bleaching), high coloration efficiency (46 cm2 C-1 at 633 nm and 136.8 cm2 C-1 at 1600 nm), and a satisfactory cycling stability at the same time.

Abstract:Electrochromic smart devices with controllable optical property are the most promising alternative to traditional windows and curtains. State of the art preparation and commercialization of large-scale electrochromic films are mainly based on vapor phase deposition, but massive application is limited by high price (due to complex preparation process). Here, an all-solution technology is developed for large-area low-cost preparation of electrochromic films. A WO3/ITO dispersion was successfully developed; high electrical conductivity ITO nanoparticle networks along with ITO coating on glass can serve as extended 3-dimensional electrode, which can form microelectrical field and act as the pathways for electron diffusion to WO3 nanorods. In fact, experiment results show that the surface resistance of WO3/ITO nanocomposite film decreased to 32% of the pure WO3. In other words, the optimum WO3/ITO nanocomposite films in this study with "distributed conductive structure" and submicrometer-sized voids morphology have improved the electrochromic properties remarkably. Our optimized WO3/ITO films exhibit higher optical modulation than pristine WO3 (Delta T = 81.7% vs 62.5% at 630 nm) and a faster switching speed (t(b) = 6 s vs 22 s).

Abstract:WO3 thin films fabricated by glancing angle deposition (GLAD) are proposed as excellent electrochromic coatings with favorable ion diffusion. A similar to 500-nm film prepared by GLAD had a relatively large transmittance modulation. The crystallization structure, surface morphology, chemical state, optical and electrochromic properties of WO3 thin films were systematically characterized upon annealing treatment. Compared with annealed WO3 porous nanostructured films, the amorphous as-deposited films exhibited a high coloration efficiency and stable reversibility. Furthermore, the GLAD WO3 films exhibit the tunable angular selectivity under illumination with p-polarized light because of the birefringence, which could extend the application range of nanostructured films in the electrochromic field. Abstract:Electrochromic materials exhibit promising applications in energy-saving fields for their ability to control heat from outdoors. Nanostructured W18O49 has drawn attention for its one-dimensional structure to transfer charge efficiently as a remarkable electrochromic material. W18O49 bi-layer films were fabricated through a facile one-step solvothermal process with citric acid as a chelating agent. The addition of citric acid improved the deposition on the substance, and a nanostructured film with a denser layer at the bottom and a tussock-like upper layer was obtained. The bi-layer film exhibited an enhanced optical modulation of 68.7%, a coloration efficiency of 82.1 cm(2)/C with stability over 400 cycles, and fast response times (1.4 s and 2.3 s for bleaching and coloring), with expectation to be applied in the electrochromic field. Abstract:Constructing a nanostructured electrochromic film and enhancing the bonding strength between the electrochromic film and electrode would effectively improve the charge transport and stability of the electrochromic film. In the present study, nanoporous WO3 films, including WO3 films without polydopamine (W-x, x = 2, 3, and 4) and WO3 films with polydopamine (PW-x, x = 2, 3, and 4), were built using a low-temperature hydrothermal method. The PW-x films showed significantly improved electrochromic cycle stability compared to the W-x films because the bonding strength between the ITO glass electrode and the WO3 film was enhanced by polydopamine (PDA) film. Notably, the PW-2 film still retained 90.8% of its original optical contrast after 5000 cycles. In addition, both the W-2 and PW-2 films exhibited high optical contrast from visible to infrared regions owing to their 3D network nanoporous structure; their optical contrasts were 71.5% and 69.7% at 700 nm, respectively. Both the W-2 and PW-2 films also exhibited high coloration efficiency and areal capacitance; their coloration efficiencies were 80.4 and 72.5 cm2/C, and areal capacitances were 59.38 and 75.32 mF/cm2, respectively. PW-2 film is promising for electrochromic energy-saving smart windows with power storage.

Abstract:WO 3 film possesses excellent electrochemical properties and have great potential for application in electrochromic devices. The a-WO 3 /c-WO 3 dual phase laminated film was prepared by stacking amorphous film (a-WO 3 ), made by a novel electrodeposition-assisted sol-gel method, on crystalline WO 3 film (c-WO 3 ) coated on ITO substrate. The effect of the crystal phase and electrodeposition time on the structure and the properties of a-WO 3 /c-WO 3 dual phase laminated film was investigated. The dual phase laminated film exhibited excellent electrochromic performance due to the synergistic effect of a-WO 3 and c-WO 3 , as well as the featured rougher surface of the dual phase laminated film. The thickness of a-WO 3 film gradually increased with the extension of deposition time, and a-WO 3 /c-WO 3 dual phase laminated film with appropriate thickness a-WO 3 film possessed the fastest response time and the highest optical contrast. The optimized a-WO 3 /c-WO 3 dual phase laminated film exhibited excellent electrochromic performance with high optical contrast (70.6% at 633 nm) and high coloring efficiency (53.6 cm 2 C −1 at 633 nm). Under without ion storage layer, the electrochromic device (ECD) with laminated structure dual phase a-WO 3 /c-WO 3 film as the electrochromic layer has been successfully assembled, which shows fascinating performance, providing a useful reference for the facile processing and application of electrochromic WO 3 film in smart windows.

In this work, the nanoporous Sm-doped WO3 (WSm) films were constructed using hydrothermal technology, then polydopamine (PDA) was modified on the surface of WSm film to obtain the WSm/Px (x = 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0) hybrid films. WSm/Px hybrid films displayed high optical contrast and large areal capacitance. In addition, in comparison with WSm film, the WSm/Px hybrid films exhibited faster response speed and better cyclic stability because PDA film enhanced the interface ion transport ability and electrochemical structural stability of the nanoporous WSm film. Notably, the WSm/P1.0 hybrid film displayed the colored/bleached times of 7.4/2.9 s, retained 90.2% of the primitive optical contrast (68.5%) after 5000 electrochromic cycles. Furthermore, the areal capacitance of WSm film could be increased by 224% through the modification of the PDA. Therefore, WSm/Px hybrid films are great prospects for electrochromic energy-saving and storage windows.

Effect of Gd-doping on Electrochromic Properties of Sputter Deposited WO3 Films

Abstract:With distinct ion insertion-induced tinting behavior, tungsten oxide (WO3) has been intensively studied as a representative electrochromic (EC) material for many years. To enhance its EC properties, strategies including nanostructuring, plasmonic engineering, and metal ion doping have been adopted. Here, we show that rare earth element of gadolinium (Gd) doping can effectively improve the coloration efficiency (eta) of a sputtered amorphous WO3 (similar to 30% enhancement at the maximum of eye-sensitive wavelength of 520 nm for 0.57 wt% doping). By combining the film structural characterization and electrochemical analysis, such an increment can be attributed to the monoclinic Gd2O3 nanoislands formed on WO3 surface which enhanced charge capacity and reaction kinetics of the film. The large transmittance modulation (76% at 800 nm), high coloration efficiency (68.3 cm(2) C-1 at 633 nm) and fast switching speed (7.8 and 10.4 s for coloration and bleach time, respectively) were achieved for the modest Gd-doped WO3 film (0.9%). However, further increasing of Gd doping results in decreasing of eta, which could be attributed to the excess amount of Gd2O3 that inhibits the penetration of electrolyte into the active material. We believe that the understanding of the Gd-doping effect on the electrochemical behaviours of WO3 may shed light on selecting the proper doping elements and their concentration for energy-saving smart windows. Pseudocapacitive Charge Storage in Electrochromic Transition-Metal Oxide Thin Films

Abstract:Electrochromic pseudocapacitive transition-metal oxide materials, such as tungsten oxide, which combine fast response, high energy density, and optical effects, can play a significant role as energy storage materials. Here we investigate the electrochemical kinetics of thin films of tungsten oxide, which turns transparent to sky-blue in color in the lithiated state due to the reduction of W6+ to W5+. We investigated the charge density, charge transfer, ion diffusion, and interfacial behavior upon Li+ insertion/de-insertion in WO3. The pseudocapacitive and electrical double layer mechanism of the electrochromic thin film was differentiated based on the power-law. Faradaic diffusion-controlled process dominates over the surface capacitive behavior at scan rates below 40 mV/s. These films exhibit areal charge density of around 100 mC/cm2 and a capacitance of 80 mF/cm2, which are superior to most comparable electrochromic materials and supercapacitors. This work reports combining electrochromics and energy storage properties and provides a fundamental understanding of pseudocapacitive and electrochromic mechanisms in WO3.

Reactive Sputter Deposition of WO3/Ag/WO3 Film for Indium Tin Oxide (ITO)-Free Electrochromic Devices

Abstract:Functioning both as electrochromic (EC) and transparent-conductive (TC) coatings, WO3/Ag/WO3 (WAW) trilayer film shows promising potential application for ITO-free electrochromic devices. Reports on thermal-evaporated WAW films revealed that these bifunctional WAW films have distinct EC characteristics; however, their poor adhesive property leads to rapid degradation of coloring-bleaching cycling. Here, we show that WAW film with improved EC durability can be prepared by reactive sputtering using metal targets. We find that, by introducing an ultrathin tungsten (W) sacrificial layer before the deposition of external WO3, the oxidation of silver, which leads to film insulation and apparent optical haze, can be effectively avoided. We also find that the luminous transmittance and sheet resistance were sensitive to the thicknesses of tungsten and silver layers. The optimized structure for TC coating was obtained to be WO3 (45 nm)/Ag (10 nm)/W (2 nm)/WO3 (45 nm) with a sheet resistance of 16.3 Ω/□ and a luminous transmittance of 73.7%. Such film exhibits compelling EC performance with decent luminous transmittance modulation ΔTlum of 29.5%, fast switching time (6.6 s for coloring and 15.9 s for bleaching time), and long-term cycling stability (2000 cycles) with an applied potential of ±1.2 V. Thicker external WO3 layer (45/10/2/100 nm) leads to larger modulation with maximum ΔTlum of 46.4%, but at the cost of significantly increasing the sheet resistance. The strategy of introducing ultrathin metal sacrificial layer to avoid silver oxidation could be extended to fabricating other oxide-Ag-oxide transparent electrodes via low-cost reactive sputtering.
Multifunctional electrochromic energy storage devices by chemical cross-linking: impact of a WO3·H2O nanoparticle-embedded chitosan thin film on amorphous WO3 films

Abstract:Abstract With the advent of multifunctional devices with electrochromic (EC) behavior and electrochemical energy storage, complementary design of film structures using inorganic–organic materials has shown great potential for developing EC energy storage devices. Herein, hybrid films consisting of WO 3 ·H 2 O nanoparticle (WHNP)-embedded chitosan thin films on amorphous WO 3 (a-WO 3 ) films were designed. By exploiting the hybrid effect of chitosan and WHNPs to generate unique chemical cross-linking between them, the designed films exhibited attractive EC behaviors compared to bare a-WO 3 films. These included fast switching speeds (4.0 s for coloration and 0.8 s for bleaching) due to enhanced electrical conductivity and Li-ion diffusivity, high coloration efficiency (62.4 cm 2 /C) as a result of increased electrochemical activity, and superb long-cycling retention (91.5%) after 1000 cycles due to improved electrochemical stability. In addition, hybrid films exhibited a noticeable energy storage performance with a high specific capacitance (154.0 F/g at a current density of 2 A/g) and a stable rate capability as a result of improved electrochemical activity and fast electrical conductivity, respectively. This resulted in brighter illumination intensity for the 1.5-V white-light-emitting diode due to improved energy density compared to a bare a-WO 3 film. Therefore, the results suggest a new design strategy for materials to realize the coincident application of multifunctional devices with EC energy storage performance.

Abstract:Electrochromic capacitors are attracting a huge attention due to their dual functions in energy-saving and energy storage. Electrochromic and energy storage performance of the films could be effectively improved through regulating their physical phase and morphology. In the present work, the physical phase and morphology of the WO3 nanofilms were regulated by doping RE ions (RE = Ce, Eu, Sm, Gd) using one-step hydrothermal technology. The three-dimensional (3D) urchin-like crystal WO3 nanofilm would transfer into the 3D nest-like WO3 (WO3-RE) nanofilms that consisted of crystal and amorphous phase by doping RE ions. Compared with the pure WO3 nanofilm, the WO3-RE nanofilms exhibited higher optical contrast, faster switching speed, longer cyclic stability, and larger areal capacitance owing to faster ions transfer rate and more stable film structure. The optical contrast of WO3-Eu and WO3-Sm nanofilms were 76.3% and 73.8% at 633 nm, 75.5% and 74.6% at 900 nm wavelength, respectively. Notably, the WO3-Eu and WO3-Sm nanofilms could retain 99.6% and 99.1% of their original optical contrasts after 1000 cycles, respectively. Additionally, the areal capacitance of ECDs based on the WO3/PB, WO3-Ce/PB, WO3-Eu/PB, WO3-Sm/PB, and WO3-Gd/PB were 26.15, 49.27, 58.23, 71.46, and 79.52 mF/cm(2) at 0.3 mA/cm(2), respectively. ECDs based on the WO3-RE/PB are promising for energy-saving and energy storage dual functional smart windows.
Optimization of photoelectric properties of transparent conductive B and Ga co-doped ZnO films for electrochromic applications

Abstract:To improve the performance of electrochromic devices, it is urgently necessary to develop transparent indium-free conductive electrodes with high conductivity and transparency. In this study, thin films of Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) and BāGa co-doped ZnO (BGZO) were prepared on glass substrates using the plasma-assisted atomic layer deposition (PEALD) technique, and their structural and optoelectronic properties were characterized. It is found that all thin films were consistent with hexagonal fibrous ZnO structure, and the surface morphology of the membrane was homogenous at nanoscale. UV spectroscopy analysis showed that the doping of B and Ga elements could increase the transparency of ZnO films. The electrical properties can be remarkably enhanced by doping with B and Ga elements. Further more, tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) was deposited on the as-prepared BGZO films using magnetron sputtering method. We activated the sample by applying voltage and observed a color transition from transparent to dark blue. It has a modulation range of 65Ā % in the 633Ā nm spectrum and a coloring efficiency of 37.8 cm 2 C -1 . This work opens up remarkable new opportunities for developing high-performance transparent conductive electrode in electrochromic devices.

Abstract:AbstractMultifunctional glass windows that combine energy storage and electrochromism have been obtained by facile thermal evaporation and electrodeposition methods. For example, WO3 films that had been deposited on fluorine‐doped tin oxide (FTO) glass exhibited a high specific capacitance of 639.8 F g−1. Their color changed from transparent to deep blue with an abrupt decrease in optical transmittance from 91.3 % to 15.1 % at a wavelength of 633 nm when a voltage of −0.6 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) was applied, demonstrating its excellent energy‐storage and electrochromism properties. As a second example, a polyaniline‐based pseudocapacitive glass was also developed, and its color can change from green to blue. A large‐scale pseudocapacitive WO3‐based glass window (15×15 cm2) was fabricated as a prototype. Such smart pseudocapacitive glass windows show great potential in functioning as electrochromic windows and concurrently powering electronic devices, such as mobile phones or laptops.
Electrochromic properties of Ni or Ti single-doped and Ni-Ag or Ti-Ag binary-doped WO 3 thin films

Abstract:In this paper, the single-doped (Ni-WO 3 and Ti-WO 3 ) and binary-doped (Ni-Ag-WO 3 and Ti-Ag-WO 3 ) amorphous WO 3 thin films were respectively prepared on indium-doped tin oxide conductive glass substrates by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. Among the single-doped WO 3 thin films, the electrochromic (EC) properties of films can be enhanced by the presence of Ni or Ti. However, the low conductivity of WO 3 limits its application in EC devices. A novel approach was proposed to ameliorate this disadvantage which has not been explored, that is, the highly conductive Ag was introduced into WO 3 films with Ni or Ti. The experimental results show that the addition of Ag reduces the charge transfer resistance and shortens the ion diffusion path length, thereby improving the EC response time (Ni-Ag-WO 3 : t b =1.16 s; Ti-Ag-WO 3 : t c =4.14 s), electrochemical active area, and ion diffusion coefficients (Ni-Ag-WO 3 : D a =3.032 × 10 −9 cm 2 /s; Ti-Ag-WO 3 : D c =7.737 × 10 −9 cm 2 /s). Based on these work, the feasibility of Ni-Ag and Ti-Ag binary-doped WO 3 films was confirmed. These discoveries contribute to the exploration of preparing high-performance WO 3 EC films for the practical applications of EC devices such as in automatic anti-glare rearview mirrors.
