Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted tremendous interest because of their rapid improvement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) from the initial PCE of 3.8% for the first prototype to the certified PCE of 25.2% in 2019. However, the inherent chemical instability of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite halides influenced by moisture, heat and ultraviolet light is still a critical issue for them to meet application-specific requirements owing to the weak-bonded organic components in the hybrid crystal structure. The use of all-inorganic perovskites CsPbI3-xBrx (x = 0, 1, 2, and 3) as light-harvesters by completely substituting organic species with inorganic Cs+ ions has been recently regarded as a promising solar conversion technology. Since the initial efficiency of 2.9% achieved in 2015, the highest PCE record for inorganic PSCs has risen to 18.4% through structure optimization, compositional engineering, interfacial engineering, solvent control and surface passivation, etc. This article is dedicated to providing an up-to-date review on the development of inorganic PSCs tailored by various inorganic perovskite materials with gradually changed optical properties and stability, as well as the film-making methods and interfacial engineering technologies. Their limited efficiencies in theory and recombination mechanisms are also predicted with a detailed balance model. Finally, we focused on the state-of-the-art strategies for enhancing the photovoltaic performance and identified new challenges and outlooks for future studies in this field.

Abstract:Inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted enormous attention during the past 5 years. Many advanced strategies and techniques have been developed for fabricating inorganic PSCs with improved efficiency and stability to realize commercial applications. CsPbBr3 is one of the representative materials of inorganic perovskites and has demonstrated excellent stability against thermal and high humidity environmental conditions. The power conversion efficiency of CsPbBr3‐based PSCs has increased significantly from 5.95% in 2015 to 10.91%, and the storage stability under moisture (≈80% relative humidity) and heat (≈80 °C) is more than 2000 h. The outstanding performance of CsPbBr3 PSCs shows great potential in light‐to‐electricity conversion applications. In this review, recent developments of CsPbBr3‐based PSCs including the physico‐chemical as well as optoelectronic properties, processing techniques for fabricating CsPbBr3 films, derivative phase structures, efficiency, and stability of devices are reviewed and discussed. Finally, the challenges and outlook of CsPbBr3 PSCs for future research directions are outlined.

Abstract:The organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have demonstrated their unprecedented high efficiency and potential for commercialization. The volatile organic components in the hybrid perovskite crystal structure are still a big challenge for long‐term stabilities. Recently, inorganic CsPbI3 perovskite has attracted much attention because of its superior chemical stability over the prevailing hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite and the most suitable band gap among all‐inorganic perovskites. Nevertheless, CsPbI3 suffers from phase instability and low photovoltaic (PV) performance due to its undesirable tolerant factor. Much research effort has been devoted into stabilization of CsPbI3. In this perspective, we review the recent progress on chemical engineering processes for the stabilization of inorganic CsPbI3 perovskite for high‐efficiency PVs. We also discuss the importance of understanding mechanism behind stabilization of CsPbI3 perovskite film and the development of inorganic CsPbI3‐based highly efficient and stable PSCs.

Abstract:Compared with organic–inorganic hybrid halide perovskites (OIHPs), inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbX3) possess superior intrinsic stability for high temperatures and are considered one of the most attractive research hotspots in the perovskite photovoltaic (PV) field in the past several years. The PCE of CsPbX3 inorganic perovskite solar cells (IPSCs) has increased from 2.9% in 2015 to more than 20% with excellent stability. There are still many on-going studies on the properties of perovskite materials and their applications in PV technology, thereby needing a thorough understanding. Here, the progress of inorganic perovskites is systematically introduced, including the fundamental properties of CsPbX3 materials and CsPbX3-based PV devices. The origins of stability and instability of CsPbX3 and defects in CsPbX3 are discussed. CsPbI3-, CsPbI2Br-, CsPbIBr2- and CsPbBr3-based PV devices and performance are comprehensively reviewed. The stabilization methods and mechanism for the photoactive phases of inorganic perovskites with low bandgap are emphasized. Reported strategies to boost the performance of CsPbX3-based IPSCs are summarized. In the end, the potential of inorganic perovskites is evaluated, which opens up new prospects for the commercialization of IPSCs.

However, CsMX3-based PSCs usually exhibit lower power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) than organic-inorganic hybrid PSCs, due to the unfavorable band gaps. Herein, a novel mixed-Pb/Sn mixed-halide inorganic perovskite, CsPb0.9Sn0.1IBr2, with a suitable band gap of 1.79 eV and an appropriate level of valence band maximum, was prepared in ambient atmosphere without a glovebox. After thoroughly eliminating labile organic components and noble metals, the all-inorganic PSCs based on CsPb0.9Sn0.1IBr2 and carbon counter electrodes exhibit a high open-circuit voltage of 1.26 V and a remarkable PCE up to 11.33%, which is record-breaking among the existing CsMX3-based PSCs. Moreover, the all-inorganic PSCs show good long-term stability and improved endurance against heat and moisture. This study indicates a feasible way to design inorganic halide perovskites through energy-band engineering for the construction of high-performance all-inorganic PSCs.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed a significant performance breakthrough in all-inorganic perovskite solar cells, but their power conversion efficiencies are still far lower than the theoretical limit and they also suffer from severe moisture instability. Based on the discussions on crystal structures, chemical bonds, and optical and electrical properties of all-inorganic perovskites, we have summarized their comprehensive applications in solar cells and detectors. The effects of monovalent and divalent ion doping, morphology, crystallization control and interface engineering on device performance and stability have been carefully evaluated. A narrow-bandgap CsPbI3 polycrystalline bulk film solar cell has achieved the highest power conversion efficiency of 18.4%, while a stable CsPbBr3 nanocrystal film is a more successful choice in UV-visible and high-energy ray detections. Finally, we call on boosting the performance and stability of solar cells and shortening the response time for tandem photovoltaic and high-speed dynamic detection applications, respectively.

Abstract:Alkali halide perovskites have emerged as representative candidates for novel opto-electronic devices owing to their balanced efficiency and stability. However, their fabrication method still remains a challenging topic with conflicts among their effectiveness, complexity, and cost. Herein, a complete two-step electrochemical method has been applied in the fabrication of inorganic perovskites for the first time. The dimension and microstructure of CsPbBr3 can be easily controlled by variation of simple physical parameters during the fabrication. By optimizing the parameters, high-quality CsPbBr3 films are obtained, and the champion device has achieved an efficiency of 7.86% with a high open-circuit voltage of 1.43 V. More importantly, the as-fabricated materials have shown an extraordinary robust stability against environmental conditions even after 150 days of exposure to air without encapsulation. This has evidently proved the electrochemical methods as an effective route for perovskite synthesis in its future development.

Abstract:CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells have attracted intense research interest since the inorganic absorber layer has better thermal stability compared with organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites. However, CsPbI3 suffers from structural instability due to an easily induced phase transition from the photoactive to the photoinactive structure. Here, we clearly identify that the formation of an organic-inorganic hybrid structure by the incorporation of (CH3)2NH2+ into the CsPbI3 lattice is the key to stabilizing the photoactive perovskite structure and improving solar cell performance.

A Modified Hybrid Chemical Vapor Deposition Method for the Fabrication of Efficient CsPbBr3 Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Due to its outstanding stability, all-inorganic cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) perovskite is gaining increasing attention as a functional material in photovoltaics and other optoelectronic applications. However, the preparation of high-quality CsPbBr3 films via solution processing remains a significant challenge due to the cesium precursor’s low solubility in common solvents. As a result, developing viable evaporation deposition strategies is critical for increasing the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on CsPbBr3. In this paper, a modified hybrid chemical vapor deposition is applied to fabricate CsPbBr3 films, and the effects of reaction temperature and reaction time on the crystallinity, morphology, and photo-electric properties of the films are investigated. By optimizing the reaction conditions, high-quality CsPbBr3 films with good crystallinity and uniformity are successfully obtained. Based on these films, CsPbBr3 PSCs with a device configuration of fluorine-doped tin oxide/compact-TiO2/CsPbBr3/carbon attained impressive power conversion efficiency of 4.41% with an ultra-high open-circuit voltage (V OC) of 1.39 V. This demonstration suggests that the modified hybrid chemical vapor deposition strategy enables a promising fabrication route suitable for all-inorganic perovskite thin films in photovoltaic application.

Bifunctional Stabilization of All-Inorganic Α-Cspbi3 Perovskite for 17% Efficiency Photovoltaics.

Abstract:The all-inorganic α-CsPbI3 perovskite with the most suitable band gap faces serious challenges of low phase stability and high moisture sensitivity. We discover that a simple phenyltrimethylammonium bromide (PTABr) post-treatment could achieve a bifunctional stabilization including both gradient Br doping (or alloying) and surface passivation. The PTABr treatment on CsPbI3 only induces less than 5 nm blue shift in UV-vis absorbance but significantly stabilize the perovskite phase with much better stability. Finally, the highly stable PTABr treated CsPbI3 based perovskite solar cells exhibit a reproducible photovoltaic performance with a champion efficiency up to 17.06% and stable output of 16.3%. Therefore, this one-step bifunctional stabilization of perovskite through gradient halide doping and surface organic cation passivation presents a novel and promising strategy to design stable and high performance all-inorganic lead halide.

Abstract:Recently, the stability of organic-inorganic perovskite thin films under thermal, photo, and moisture stresses has become a major concern for further commercialization due to the high volatility of the organic cations in the prototype perovskite composition (CH3NH3PbI3). All inorganic cesium (Cs) based perovskite is an alternative to avoid the release or decomposition of organic cations. Moreover, substituting Pb with Sn in the organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites has been demonstrated to narrow the bandgap to 1.2-1.4 eV for high-performance perovskite solar cells. In this work, a series of CsPb1-xSnxIBr2 perovskite alloys via one-step antisolvent method is demonstrated. These perovskite films present tunable bandgaps from 2.04 to 1.64 eV. Consequently, the CsPb0.75Sn0.25IBr2 with homogeneous and densely crystallized morphology shows a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 11.53% and a high V-oc of 1.21 V with a much improved phase stability and illumination stability. This work provides a possibility for designing and synthesizing novel inorganic halide perovskites as the next generation of photovoltaic materials.

Abstract:The all-inorganic CsPbI2Br perovskite possesses outstanding thermal stability as a light absorber in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) or photodetectors. Still, their sensitivity to moisture induces irreversible decomposition and a large number of halogen vacancy defects, hindering their commercial applications. Herein, by incorporating 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4) ionic liquids (ILs) as a precursor additive, a CsPbI2Br light absorber with an improved carrier lifetime and reduced trap density is achieved. Moreover, the modification of the perovskite surface with CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) further improved the efficiency and moisture stability of the PSC. As a result, the BMIMBF4 IL and CsPbBr3 QD co-modified PSC achieves a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.37% and retained 80% of its initial PCE after exposure to ambient air for 60 h. This work proposes a synergistic approach for developing high-performance organic-free PSCs with an improved PCE and moisture stability.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic hybrid halide perovskites materials have inspired enormous interest in the photovoltaic research community; however, they are currently plagued by insufficient environmental stability. To overcome this problem, all-inorganic halide perovskites have been developed and exhibit significantly improved stability. Here, vacuum thermal evaporation deposition of CsPbBr3 perovskite films is developed by dual-source coevaporation of CsBr and PbBr2 precursors. The evaporation rate ratio of CsBr to PbBr2 determines the stoichiometry of the deposited CsPbBr3 films, and the substrate temperature and post annealing temperature affect the crystallinity of the CsPbBr3 films. Through systematic optimization of the deposition parameters, high-quality CsPbBr3 films with good crystallinity and uniformity are obtained. Planar CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cells with high efficiency of 6.95% in small size (0.09 cm2) and 5.37% in large size (1 cm2) are fabricated. Moreover, the CsPbBr3 solar cells show good long-term stability under ambient conditions without encapsulation.

Abstract:CsPbIBr2 photovoltaic materials attract remarkable attention in the field of all‐inorganic halide perovskite solar cells (HPSCs) due to their superior humidity stability and heat endurance. Since the first report in 2016, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of CsPbIBr2‐based HPSCs (Cs‐HPSCs) has increased from 4.7% to 11.53% with an almost 2.5‐fold leap in a short time. Cs‐HPSCs have also become one of the most researched materials in the all‐inorganic perovskite family. Here, the crystal structure and spectrum properties of CsPbIBr2 are first elucidated to provide a preliminary overview. Subsequently, significantly modified strategies, including various assisting procedures for spin coating, interface engineering, and element impurity doping for superior perovskites and better‐performing cells are meticulously introduced. Overall, the development process of the CsPbIBr2 materials is focused on, and the feasible strategies to improve fabrication techniques for superior perovskite films and corresponding device PCEs are emphatically summarized, with the aim to provide some constructive guidelines for the rapid development of Cs‐HPSCs.
Surface passivation engineering strategy to fully-inorganic cubic CsPbI 3 perovskites for high-performance solar cells

Abstract:Owing to inevitable thermal/moisture instability for organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites, pure inorganic perovskite cesium lead halides with both inherent stability and prominent photovoltaic performance have become research hotspots as a promising candidate for commercial perovskite solar cells. However, it is still a serious challenge to synthesize desired cubic cesium lead iodides (CsPbI 3 ) with superior photovoltaic performance for its thermodynamically metastable characteristics. Herein, polymer poly-vinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-induced surface passivation engineering is reported to synthesize extra-long-term stable cubic CsPbI 3 . It is revealed that acylamino groups of PVP induce electron cloud density enhancement on the surface of CsPbI 3 , thus lowering surface energy, conducive to stabilize cubic CsPbI 3 even in micrometer scale. The cubic-CsPbI 3 PSCs exhibit extra-long carrier diffusion length (over 1.5 μm), highest power conversion efficiency of 10.74% and excellent thermal/moisture stability. This result provides important progress towards understanding of phase stability in realization of large-scale preparations of efficient and stable inorganic PSCs.

Abstract:All-inorganic CsPbX3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have become a research topic in the field of photovoltaics in recent years due to their suitable bandgap and excellent stability. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) has increased from 2.9% to more than 21% at present, which possesses great commercialization potential and broad practical application prospects. The crystal growth and defect level of perovskite film have a significant impact on the performance and stability of the devices, therefore, optimization for the film crystallization process and the suppression of the trap states are essential for the preparation of high-performance photovoltaic devices. In this review, firstly, basic information about CsPbX3 perovskite is presented, including the crystal structure, phase characteristics, different types of defects in the film, and the detrimental effects on device performance. Secondly, the crystallization modulation and defect passivation strategies applied to prepare high-quality perovskite film are systematically summarized, and the optimization schemes to improve device performance and stability are outlined in terms of four aspects, including composition engineering, organic additive engineering, dimension engineering, and interface engineering. Finally, the challenges faced in the current research process of all-inorganic CsPbX3 are elaborated, and the prospects for further research are envisioned.
