Abstract:We extend our previous method of proving the positive-mass conjecture to prove the positive-action conjecture of Hawking for asymptotically Euclidean metric. This result is crucial in proving the path integral convergent in the Euclidean quantum gravity theory.

Abstract:LetM be a space-time whose local mass density is non-negative everywhere. Then we prove that the total mass ofM as viewed from spatial infinity (the ADM mass) must be positive unlessM is the flat Minkowski space-time. (So far we are making the reasonable assumption of the existence of a maximal spacelike hypersurface. We will treat this topic separately.) We can generalize our result to admit wormholes in the initial-data set. In fact, we show that the total mass associated with each asymptotic regime is non-negative with equality only if the space-time is flat.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds endowed with a continuous metric and the metric is smooth away from a compact subset with certain conditions. If the metric is Lipschitz and the scalar curvature is nonnegative away from a closed subset with (n - 1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure zero, then we prove that the ADM mass of each end is nonnegative. Furthermore, if the ADM mass of some end is zero, then we prove that the manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space. The Hausdorff measure condition is optimal, which confirms a conjecture of Lee in 2013. The proof of the nonnegativity is based on a smoothing argument with some new estimates such as a L-1-scalar curvature approximation estimates. The proof of the rigidity relies on the RCD theory where we show that the manifold has nonnegative Ricci curvature in RCD sense. The idea involving RCD theory in the proof turns out to be much more suitable in the study of the rigidity for continuous metrics. Furthermore, our result generalizes the result of Lee and LeFloch (Commun Math Phys 339(1):99-120, 2015) from spin to non-spin.

Abstract:The positive mass theorem states that for a nontrivial isolated physical system, the total energy, which includes contributions from both matter and gravitation is positive. This assertion was demonstrated in our previous paper in the important case when the space-time admits a maximal slice. Here this assumption is removed and the general theorem is demonstrated. Abstracts of the results of this paper appeared in [11] and [13].

Abstract:We extend our previous proof of the positive mass conjecture to allow a more general asymptotic condition proposed by York. Hence we are able to prove that for an isolated physical system, the energy momentum four vector is a future timelike vector unless the system is trivial. Furthermore, we allow singularities of the type of black holes.

Abstract:We have previously proposed a conjecture stating that quantum mechanical transition amplitudes can be parametrized in terms of a quantum action. Here we give a proof of the conjecture and establish the existance of a local quantum action in the case of imaginary time in the Feynman-Kac limit (when temperature goes to zero). Moreover we discuss some symmetry properties of the quantum action.

Abstract:The AdS/CFT correspondence states that certain conformal field theories are equivalent to string theories in a higher-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. One aspect of the correspondence is an equivalence of density matrices or, if one ignores normalizations, of positive operators. On the CFT side of the correspondence, any two positive operators $A,B$ will satisfy the trace inequality $\operatorname{Tr}(AB) \leq \operatorname{Tr}(A) \operatorname{Tr}(B)$. This relation holds on any Hilbert space ${\cal H}$ and is deeply associated with the fact that the algebra $B({\cal H})$ of bounded operators on ${\cal H}$ is a type I von Neumann factor. Holographic bulk theories must thus satisfy a corresponding condition, which we investigate below. In particular, we argue that the Euclidean gravitational path integral respects this inequality at all orders in the semi-classical expansion and with arbitrary higher-derivative corrections. The argument relies on a conjectured property of the classical gravitational action, which in particular implies a positive action conjecture for quantum gravity wavefunctions. We prove this conjecture for Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and we also motivate it for more general theories.

Abstract:We prove a Riemannian positive mass theorem for manifolds with a single asymptotically flat end, but otherwise arbitrary other ends, which can be incomplete and contain negative scalar curvature. The incompleteness and negativity is compensated for by large positive scalar curvature on an annulus, in a quantitative fashion. In the complete noncompact case with nonnegative scalar curvature, we have no extra assumption and hence prove a long-standing conjecture of Schoen and Yau.

Abstract:We prove positive mass theorem with angular momentum and charges for axially symmetric, simply connected, maximal, com-plete initial data sets with two ends, one designated asymptoti-cally flat and the other either (Kaluza-Klein) asymptotically flat or asymptotically cylindrical, for 4-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell the-ory and 5-dimensional minimal supergravity theory which metrics fail to be C-1 and second fundamental forms and electromagnetic fields fail to be C-0 across an axially symmetric hypersurface Sigma. Furthermore, we remove the completeness and simple connectivity assumptions in this result and prove it for manifold with boundary such that the mean curvature of the boundary is non-positive.

Abstract:We study the quasi-local masses arising in general relativity using spinors and prove their positivity property. This leads to the question of a pure quasi-local proof of the positivity of the Wang-Yau quasi-local mass. More precisely we prove that the gravitational mass bounded by a spacelike topological 2-sphere is non-negative in a generic spacetime verifying dominant energy condition and vanishes only if the surface is embedded in the Minkowski space. This construction is purely quasi-local in nature and in particular does not rely on Bartanik's gluing and asymptotic extension construction and subsequent application of the positive mass theorem to prove the positivity of quasi-local mass. The result involves solving Dirac equation on a compact Riemannian manifold with boudary using MIT Bag and APS boundary condition.

Abstract:The positive mass theorem in general relativity states that in an asymptotically flat spacetime, if the momentum--energy tensor is divergence-free and satisfies a dominant energy condition, then a total momentum--energy four-vector can be formed, of which the energy component is nonnegative. In this paper, we take the wave four-tensor of a plane light wave in free space as a counterexample to show that there is no guarantee that a total four-vector can be formed. Thus the theoretical framework for the positive mass theorem is flawed. In addition, it is also shown as well that the Lorentz covariance of Dirac wave equation is not compatible with Einstein mass--energy equivalence.

A Positive Quasilocal Mass for Causal Variational Principles

Abstract:A new inequality for a nonlinear surface layer integral is proved for minimizers of causal variational principles. This inequality is applied to obtain a new proof of the positive mass theorem with volume constraint. Next, a positive mass theorem without volume constraint is stated and proved by introducing and using the concept of asymptotic alignment. Moreover, a positive quasi-local mass and a synthetic definition of scalar curvature are introduced in the setting of causal variational principles. Our notions and results are illustrated by the explicit examples of causal fermion systems constructed in ultrastatic spacetimes and the Schwarzschild spacetime. In these examples, the correspondence to the ADM mass and similarities to the Brown-York mass are worked out.

Abstract:Asymptotically flat static causal fermion systems are introduced. Their total mass is defined as a limit of surface layer integrals which compare the measures describing the asymptotically flat spacetime and a vacuum spacetime near spatial infinity. Our definition does not involve any regularity assumptions; it even applies to singular or generalized "quantum" spacetimes. A positive mass theorem is proven. Our methods and results explain why and how the causal action principle incorporates the nonlinear effects of gravity for static systems.

Abstract:We use planar coordinates as well as hyperbolic coordinates to separate the de Sitter spacetime into two parts. These two ways of cutting the de Sitter give rise to two different spatial infinities. For spacetimes which are asymptotic to either half of the de Sitter spacetime, we are able to provide definitions of the total energy, the total linear momentum, the total angular momentum, respectively. And we prove two positive mass theorems, corresponding to these two sorts of spatial infinities, for spacelike hypersurfaces whose mean curvatures are bounded by certain constant from above.
