Abstract:The interaction of water with titanium dioxide surfaces has a vital role in many energy- and environment-related applications, such as dye-sensitized solar cell, photocatalytic or photoelectrochemical hydrogen production, and environmental purification. Structure and properties of water on the anatase TiO2(101) surface have been studied by using a combination of density functional theory and force field molecular dynamics. Owing to the amphotericity of this surface and the competition between water water and water substrate interactions, the structure and properties of water on the anatase TiO2(101) surface exhibited some peculiar and complicated features. The overall evolutionary process of interface formation has been obtained by investigating the TiO2 adsorption configuration and energy of water. The competition between water water and water substrate interaction results in the existence of a stable bilayer of water (Theta >= 2 ML) and an ice-like structure of water at higher coverage (Theta >= 3 ML). Both static and dynamic calculation results have showed that a highly ordered structure occurs in the first few water molecule layers, and this order decreases as one moves toward the bulk region. The electric fields across the interface and in the electric double layer were estimated to be about 10 and 2 eV, respectively. This study may provide new insight into the static and dynamic properties of the water-TiO2 interface and elucidate the reactions that occur on the TiO2 surface.

A Theoretical Study of Water Adsorption and Decomposition on the Low-Index Stoichiometric Anatase Tio2 Surfaces

Abstract:Water adsorption and decomposition on the low-index anatase TiO2 surfaces were investigated by the periodic density functional theory calculations. The reaction pathway between water molecule adsorption and dissociative adsorption was determined by using the method of complete linear synchronous transit/quadratic synchronous transit. The existence of Bronzed-Evans-Polanyi relationships for the decomposition reaction of water on TiO2 surfaces was revealed. The results showed that the water decomposition reaction is a surface-structure-sensitive process, and it is determined not only by the surface energy but also by the surface properties. On these low-index surfaces, the chemical activity for the water decomposition reaction decreases in the order (001) > (103)(f) > (100) > (110) > (103)(s) > (101). The surfaces can be divided into two groups, according to the magnitude of additional surface dipole moment, that obey the Bronzed-Evans-Polanyi relationship.
Influence of subsurface defects on the surface reactivity of TiO 2: Water on anatase (101)

Abstract:The adsorption of water on a reduced TiO2 anatase (101) surface is investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations. The presence of subsurface defects, which are prevalent oil reduced anatase (101), leads to a higher desorption temperature of adsorbed water, indicating an enhanced binding due to the defects. Theoretical calculations of water adsorption oil anatase (101) surfaces containing Subsurface oxygen vacancies or titanium interstitials show a strong selectivity for water binding to sites in the vicinity of the subsurface defects. Moreover, (lie water adsorption energy at these sites is considerably higher that) that on the stoichiometric surface, thus giving all explanation for the experimental observations. The calculations also predict facile water dissociation at these sites, confirming the important role of defects in the Surface chemistry of TiO2.

Abstract:The hydrogen bond network reconstruction at the titanium/water interface was monitored by Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the adsorption properties and the surface electron properties of hydrogen bond cluster (HBC) configurations were analyzed using adsorption energy, work function, Mulliken charge population, and density of states (DOS) by the first-principles method based on density functional theory (DFT). Our results show that the hydrogen bond network of the aqueous solution is reconstructed under the interaction with the anatase TiO2(101) surface with the transformation of the chain and free hydrogen bonds to complex hydrogen bonds. The adsorption energy of a single water molecule and HBC on the anatase TiO2(101) surface are the lowest with the 1-DD-h (-0.851 eV) and 3-D-h-DDA (-1.048 eV) configurations, respectively. Over the long term, artificially regulating the structure of the HBC might be an effective and general way to slow down the metal anodic reaction without surface modification. Furthermore, the surface charge concentrates on the bridging oxygen atom, which will be the active site of the interface reaction. It is helpful to clarify the anodic corrosion reaction mechanism of the titanium spontaneous oxide film/water interface.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) plays a central role in the study of artificial photosynthesis, owing to its ability to perform photocatalytic water splitting. Despite over four decades of intense research efforts in this area, there is still some debate over the nature of the first water monolayer on the technologically-relevant anatase TiO$_2$ (101) surface. In this work we use first-principles calculations to reverse-engineer the experimental high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectra measured for this surface in [Walle et al., J. Phys. Chem. C 115, 9545 (2011)], and find evidence supporting the existence of a mix of dissociated and molecular water in the first monolayer. Using both semilocal and hybrid functional calculations we revise the current understanding of the adsorption energetics by showing that the energetic cost of water dissociation is reduced via the formation of a hydrogen-bonded hydroxyl-water complex. We also show that such a complex can provide an explanation of an unusual superstructure observed in high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy experiments.

Abstract:The behavior of water molecule on anatase TiO2 (101) surface has been investigated by density functional theory calculations. The primary purpose of this Letter is to clarify the distinctions between molecular adsorption and dissociative adsorption of water on anatase TiO2 (101) surface. By analyzing interaction potential forms and bonding mechanism, it is found that the dipole interaction is the crucial factor for water adsorption on anatase TiO2 (101) surface. The adiabatic potential energy surface calculations indicate that the on-surface diffusion of water molecule is anisotropy: its diffusion energy barrier along [010] direction is smaller than that of along [111¯]/[11¯1¯] direction.

Abstract:Anatase TiO2 is a widely-used component in photo- and electro-catalysts for water splitting, and the (101) facet of anatase TiO2 is the most commonly exposed surface. Detailed understanding of the behavior of H2O on this surface could provide fundamental insights into the catalytic mechanism. This, however, is challenging due to the complexity of the interfacial environments, the high mobility of interfacial H2O, and the interference from outer-layer H2O. Herein, we investigate H2O/TiO2 interface using advanced solid-state NMR techniques. The atomic–level structures of surface O sites, OH groups, and adsorbed H2O have been revealed and the detailed interactions among them are identified on the (101) facet of anatase TiO2. By following the quantitative evolution of surface O and OH sites along with H2O loading, it is found that more than 40% of the adsorbed water spontaneously dissociated under ambient conditions on the TiO2 surface at a loading of 0.3 mmol H2O/g, due to the delicate interplay between water-surface and water-water interactions. Our study highlights the importance of understanding the atomic-level structures of H2O on the surface of TiO2 in catalytic reactions. Such knowledge can promote the design of more efficient catalytic systems for renewable energy production involving activation of water molecules.

Abstract:The relationship between structure and reactivity plays a dominant role in water dissociation on the various TiO2 crystallines. To observe the adsorption and dissociation behavior of H2O, the reaction force field (ReaxFF) is used to investigate the dynamic behavior of H2O on rutile (110) and anatase (101) surfaces in an aqueous environment. Simulation results show that there is a direct proton transfer between the adsorbed H2O (H2Oad) and the bridging oxygen (Obr) on the rutile (110) surface. Compared with that on the rutile (110) surface, an indirect proton transfer occurs on the anatase (101) surface along the H-bond network from the second layer of water. This different mechanism of water dissociation is determined by the distance between the 5-fold coordinated Ti (Ti5c) and Obr of the rutile and anatase TiO2 surfaces, resulting in the direct or indirect proton transfer. Additionally, the hydrogen bond (H-bond) network plays a crucial role in the adsorption and dissociation of H2O on the TiO2 surface. To describe interfacial water structures between TiO2 and bulk water, the double-layer model is proposed. The first layer is the dissociated H2O on the rutile (110) and anatase (101) surfaces. The second layer forms an ordered water structure adsorbed to the surface Obr or terminal OH group through strong hydrogen bonding (H-bonding). Affected by the H-bond network, the H2O dissociation on the rutile (110) surface is inhibited but that on the anatase (101) surface is promoted.

Natural Hydrophobicity and Reversible Wettability Conversion of Flat Anatase TiO₂ Thin Film.

Abstract:Flat anatase TiO2 thin film deposited at room temperature shows the natural hydrophobicity, which is destroyed by 400 °C vacuum annealing. On the basis of the analysis of surface composition and structure, the origin of hydrophobicity of the flat TiO2 film can be identified as (1) approximately fully stoichiometric TiO2 and (2) hydrocarbon adsorbates on the film surface. We further validate that interfacial water molecules near the surface of the as-prepared TiO2 film are oriented in the hydrophobic hydration structure via Fourier transform infrared/attenuated total reflection. Moreover, the as-prepared TiO2 film also shows a smart surface reversibly switched between hydrophobicity and super-hydrophilicity. During the recovery process of hydrophobicity, the irradiated films show the wettability with water contact angle of 107 ± 1.7, 72 ± 2.5, 80 ± 1.1, and 17 ± 1.3° corresponding to after a week of exposure to ambient air, O2, CF4, and Ar, respectively. It can be strongly reinforced that the stoichiometry and the adsorbates both play an important role in forming the hydrophobic TiO2 films.
Activation of water on the TiO2 (110) surface: the case of Ti adatoms.

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations we have studied the reactions of water over Ti adatoms on the (110) surface of rutile TiO(2). Our results provide fundamental insights into the microscopic mechanisms that drive this reaction at the atomic level and assess the possibility of using this system to activate the water dissociation reaction. In particular, we show that a single water molecule dissociates exothermically with a small energy barrier of 0.17 eV. After dissociation, both H(+) and OH(-) ions bind strongly to the Ti adatom, which serves as an effective reactive center on the TiO(2) surface. Finally, clustering of Ti adatoms does not improve the redox activity of the system and results in a slightly higher energy barrier for water dissociation.

Abstract:The reactivity of specific sites on rutile TiO2(110)−(1×1) surface and anatase TiO2(001)−(1×4) surface has been comparably studied by means of high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy. At the rutile TiO2(110)−(1×1) surface, we find the defects of oxygen vacancy provide distinct reactivity for O2 and CO2 adsorption, while the terminal fivefold-coordinated Ti sites dominate the photocatalytic reactivity for H2O and CH3OH dissociation. At the anatase TiO2(001)−(1×4) surface, the sixfold-coordinated terminal Ti sites at the oxidized surface seem to be inert in both O2 and H2O reactions, but the Ti-rich defects which introduce the Ti3+ state into the reduced surface are found to provide high reactivity for the reactions of O2 and H2O. By comparing the reactions on both rutile and anatase surfaces under similar experimental conditions, we find the reactivity of anatase TiO2(001) is actually lower than rutile TiO2(110), which challenges the conventional knowledge that the anatase (001) is the most reactive TiO2 surface. Our findings could provide atomic level insights into the mechanisms of TiO2 based catalytic and photocatalytic chemical reactions.
Computational study on the reactions of H2O2 on TiO2 anatase (101) and rutile (110) surfaces

Abstract:This study investigates the adsorption and reactions of H(2)O(2) on TiO(2) anatase (101) and rutile (110) surfaces by first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory in conjunction with the projected augmented wave approach, using PW91, PBE, and revPBE functionals. Adsorption mechanisms of H(2)O(2) and its fragments on both surfaces are analyzed. It is found that H(2)O(2) , H(2)O, and HO preferentially adsorb at the Ti(5c) site, meanwhile HOO, O, and H preferentially adsorb at the (O(2c))(Ti(5c)), (Ti(5c))(2), and O(2c) sites, respectively. Potential energy profiles of the adsorption processes on both surfaces have been constructed using the nudged elastic band method. The two restructured surfaces, the 1/3 ML oxygen covered TiO(2) and the hydroxylated TiO(2), are produced with the H(2)O(2) dehydration and deoxidation, respectively. The formation of main products, H(2)O(g) and the 1/3 ML oxygen covered TiO(2) surface, is exothermic by 2.8 and 5.0 kcal/mol, requiring energy barriers of 0.8 and 1.1 kcal/mol on the rutile (110) and anatase (101) surface, respectively. The rate constants for the H(2)O(2) dehydration processes have been predicted to be 6.65 × 10(-27) T(4.38) exp(-0.14 kcal mol(-1)/RT) and 3.18 × 10(-23) T(5.60) exp(-2.92 kcal mol(-1)/RT) respectively, in units of cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1).

Understanding the Intrinsic Chemical Activity of Anatase TiO2(001)-(1 × 4) Surface

Abstract:We report our investigation on the intrinsic chemical activity of the anatase TiO2(001)-(1 X 4) reconstructed surface, using epitaxially grown anatase TiO2(001) thin films and using methanol molecules as a probe, characterized by combining scanning tunneling microscopy and temperature-programmed desorption. Our results provide direct evidence that the perfect (1 x 4) lattice sites of the surface are intrinsically quite inert for the reaction of methanol. We obtain that the activation energy for desorption of molecular methanol is about 0.55-0.64 eV, which is in good agreement with our first-principle calculations based on the structural model with 5-fold coordinated Ti atoms at the ridges of (1 x 4) reconstruction. We find that two types of defect sites, that is, reduced Ti pairs and partially oxidized Ti pairs, are responsible for the chemical activity of the surface, evidenced by the desorption of water due to the dehydrogenation of methanol at the defect sites. The methoxy left at the reduced Ti-pair sites further produced CH3 radical, and the methoxy near the partially oxidized Ti-pair sites produced formaldehyde arid methanol through disproportionation reaction. The determination of these intrinsic properties can be important to understanding the conflicting results from this surface in the literature and thus to reveal the actual reaction mechanisms.
Mechanistic insight on water dissociation on pristine low-index TiO2 surfaces from machine learning molecular dynamics simulations

Abstract:Abstract Water adsorption and dissociation processes on pristine low-index TiO 2 interfaces are important but poorly understood outside the well-studied anatase (101) and rutile (110). To understand these, we construct three sets of machine learning potentials that are simultaneously applicable to various TiO 2 surfaces, based on three density-functional-theory approximations. Here we show the water dissociation free energies on seven pristine TiO 2 surfaces, and predict that anatase (100), anatase (110), rutile (001), and rutile (011) favor water dissociation, anatase (101) and rutile (100) have mostly molecular adsorption, while the simulations of rutile (110) sensitively depend on the slab thickness and molecular adsorption is preferred with thick slabs. Moreover, using an automated algorithm, we reveal that these surfaces follow different types of atomistic mechanisms for proton transfer and water dissociation: one-step, two-step, or both. These mechanisms can be rationalized based on the arrangements of water molecules on the different surfaces. Our finding thus demonstrates that the different pristine TiO 2 surfaces react with water in distinct ways, and cannot be represented using just the low-energy anatase (101) and rutile (110) surfaces.

Surface Energy-Driven Solution Epitaxial Growth of Anatase TiO2 Homostructures for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been extensively investigated as a photocatalyst for water splitting to produce H-2. However, an overall water splitting by using anatase TiO2 is extremely difficult due to the short lifetime of holes. In this work, we propose that a surface energy decrease from {001} to {101} of anatase TiO2 is able to drive an epitaxial growth. A novel anatase TiO2 homostructure has been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route, where {101} semi-pyramid nanoparticles epitaxially grew on the both sides of the {001} nanosheets. The epitaxial relationship between the nanoparticles and the nanosheets has been characterized to be {001}/1{001} of anatase TiO2. For the first time, it is interesting to find that the homostructure with 12 wt% of {101} semi-pyramid can significantly improve the H-2 evolution rate by nearly 5 times compared to the pure nanosheets under the ultraviolet irradiation. More importantly, such homostructure enables 10.78 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) of O-2 production whereas the pure nanosheets cannot evolve detectable O-2 gas. Meanwhile, the time-resolved photoluminescence analysis indicates that the mean lifetime of the holes is increased from 2.20 ns of the nanosheets to 3.59 ns of the homostructure, accounting for the observed overall water splitting. The findings suggest that constructing a homostructure by a surface energy strategy could be promising towards overall water splitting, which may be applicable to other photocatalytic materials. Abstract:The anatase TiO2 (001) surface has attracted extensive attention in surface science and for practical applications because of its excellent performance. However, the highly reactive (001) surface usually reconstructs to a (1 × 4)-(001) surface, which may potentially alter its properties. As a result, there are still controversial issues concerning the intrinsic performance of this surface. Recently, significant advances have been made in the surface science study of TiO2 (001), which have elucidated its intrinsic physical and chemical properties. In this review, we summarize our present understanding of the structure and properties of the reconstructed TiO2 (001) surface. First, we provide a brief background of the anatase TiO2 surfaces, including its low-index surface structures and the synthesis of anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with the (001) surface exposed. Next, we focus on the structure, formation mechanism, stability, and surface chemistry of the reconstructed TiO2 (001) surface. Finally, we finish this review by highlighting the current challenges of this subject and providing future research perspectives.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of metal oxide surface mainly depends on its atomic sur-face structure,which usually changes under various treat-ment conditions and during catalytic reactions.Therefore,it is quite important to acquire the atomic geometries of the surfaces under different treatments for further understanding the catalytic mechanisms in the surfaces with complicated reconstructions.Here,we report the investigation on the evolution of surface geometries of the Ar+-ion-sputtered anatase TiO2(001)films followed by heating treatments at various temperatures,characterized using variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy.Our experimental results reveal the different surface morphologies at different heating temperatures.During the heating treat-ment,the migrations of O atoms from the bulk to the surface of TiO2(001)play an important role in the reoxidation of the Ti2+and Ti3+states for the formation of(1×4)reconstruction.The atomic-resolution images of the ridges show asymmetric features,which well support the fully oxidized structural model of the reconstructed TiO2(001)-(1×4)surface.
Different Reactivities of TiO2 Polymorphs: Comparative DFT Calculations of Water and Formic Acid Adsorption at Anatase and Brookite TiO2 Surfaces

Abstract:Density functional theory calculations have been performed to determine the relationship between structures and reactivity of anatase and brookite TiO2 surfaces. Brookite TiO2(210) has the same structural building block of anatase TiO2(101), but interatomic distances are slightly shorter and the blocks are arranged in a different way. Our calculations show that these differences significantly change the reactivity toward adsorption of various molecules, and most importantly, generate highly active sites at the junction between different structural units on brookite TiO2(210). These results suggest that brookite TiO2(210) would exhibit distinct activity, which may be useful in catalytic and photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:The chemical reactivity of different surfaces of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) has been the subject of extensive studies in recent decades. The anatase TiO 2 (001) and its (1 × 4) reconstructed surfaces were theoretically considered to be the most reactive and have been heavily pursued by synthetic chemists. However, the lack of direct experimental verification or determination of the active sites on these surfaces has caused controversy and debate. Here we report a systematic study on an anatase TiO 2 (001)-(1 × 4) surface by means of microscopic and spectroscopic techniques in combination with first-principles calculations. Two types of intrinsic point defects are identified, among which only the Ti 3+ defect site on the reduced surface demonstrates considerable chemical activity. The perfect surface itself can be fully oxidized, but shows no obvious activity. Our findings suggest that the reactivity of the anatase TiO 2 (001) surface should depend on its reduction status, similar to that of rutile TiO 2 surfaces.
