Abstract:A series of layered perovskites Sr2MO4 (M=Ti, V, Cr, and Mn) is studied by ab initio calculations within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and GGA+U schemes. The total energies in different magnetic configurations, including the nonmagnetic, ferromagnetic, the layered antiferromagnetic with alternating ferromagnetic plane, and the staggered in-plane antiferromagnetic (AFM-II) order, are calculated. It is found that Sr2TiO4 is always a nonmagnetic band insulator. For Sr2MnO4, both GGA and GGA+U calculations show that the insulating AFM-II state has the lowest total energy among all the considered configurations. For M=V and Cr, the GGA is not enough to give out the insulating AFM-II states and including the on-site electron-electron correlation effect U is necessary and efficient. The AFM-II state will have the lowest total energy in both cases when U is larger than a critical value. Further, the optical conductivity spectra are calculated and compared with the experimental measurements to show how well the ground state is described within the GGA or GGA+U. The results indicate that U is overestimated in Sr2VO4 and Sr2CrO4. To make up such a deficiency of GGA+U, the contributions from proper changes in the ligand field, acting cooperatively with U, are discussed and shown to be efficient in Sr2CrO4.

Abstract:The magnetic structure and spin-wave excitations in the quasi-square-lattice layered perovskite compound La5Mo4O16 were studied by a combination of neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering techniques using polycrystalline sample. Neutron powder diffraction refinement revealed that the magnetic structure is ferrimagnetic in the ab plane with antiferromagnetic stacking along the c-axis where the magnetic propagation vector is $\mathbf{k} = (0,0,1/2)$. The ordered magnetic moments are estimated to be 0.54(2)μB for Mo5+ (4d1) ions and 1.07(3)μB for Mo4+ (4d2) ions at 4 K, which are about half of the expected values. The inelastic neutron scattering results display strong easy-axis magnetic anisotropy along the c-axis due to the spin–orbit interaction in Mo ions evidenced by the spin gap at the magnetic zone center. First-principles study of the electronic, magnetic, and crystal structure of perovskite molybdates

Abstract:The molybdate oxides SrMoO$_3$, PbMoO$_3$, and LaMoO$_3$ are a class of metallic perovskites that exhibit interesting properties including high mobility, and unusual resistivity behavior. We use first-principles methods based on density functional theory to explore the electronic, crystal, and magnetic structure of these materials. In order to account for the electron correlations in the partially-filled Mo $4d$ shell, a local Hubbard $U$ interaction is included. The value of $U$ is estimated via the constrained random-phase approximation approach, and the dependence of the results on the choice of $U$ are explored. For all materials, GGA+$U$ predicts a metal with an orthorhombic, antiferromagnetic structure. For LaMoO$_3$, the $Pnma$ space group is the most stable, while for SrMoO$_3$ and PbMoO$_3$, the $Imma$ and $Pnma$ structures are close in energy. The $R_4^+$ octahedral rotations for SrMoO$_3$ and PbMoO$_3$ are found to be overestimated compared to the experimental low-temperature structure.

Abstract:Raman scattering experiment and density functional theory calculation have been applied to investigate the vibrational modes of perovskite (C6H5CH2NH3)(2)PbBr4 in the spectral range of 450 similar to 1 700 cm(-1). Comparing the experimental Raman spectrum and theoretical calculated result, it was found that density functional theory can be well applied to simulate the vibration modes oforganic part of (C6H5CH2NH3)(2)PbBr4. Furthermore, the origins of the observed Raman peaks in the spectral range of 450 similar to 1 700 cm(-1) have been assigned by comparing the results of density functional theory calculation and literature reports. In addition, it was found that the Raman peaks in this spectral range are mainly originated from the vibrational modes of organic part of (C6H5CH2NH3)(2)PbEir(4).
First-principles Study on the Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Perovskite Ruthenate SrRuO3

Abstract:We report a self-consistent full-potential LMTO band structure calculation on the electronic and magnetic properties of Ru-based perovskite SrRuO3 in this article. For the assumed simple cubic structure with lattice constant a=0.3923nm, the calculated spin moment per SrRuO3 unit is 1.29μB. Most of the moment (approximately 65%) is located on the Ru site within a unit cell and the spin moment of each oxygen atom is about 0.10μB. The electronic density of states at Fermi level EF is about 43.5 (states/Ry/f.u.). For the practical orthorhombic structured SrRuO3, the present calculation predicts a spin moment ∼1.08μB/f.u. and the corresponding DOS at Fermi level is ∼61.0 (states/Ry/f.u.). The present band calculation yields a reasonable enhancement of electron mass in comparison with a previous specific heat measurement at low temperature. It is concluded that SrRuO3 is a typical itinerant ferromagnet instead of a highly correlated electron system.

Abstract:The structural stability and the elastic properties of a novel structure of lead titanate, which is named pre-perovskite PbTiO3 (PP-PTO) and is constructed with TiO6 octahedral columns arranged in a one-dimensional manner, are investigated by using first-principles calculations. PP-PTO is energetically unstable compared with conventional perovskite phases, however it is mechanically stable. The equilibrium transition pressures for changing from pre-perovskite to cubic and tetragonal phases are -0.5 GPa and -1.4 GPa, respectively, with first-order characteristics. Further, the differences in elastic properties between pre-perovskite and conventional perovskite phases are discussed for the covalent bonding network, which shows a highly anisotropic character in PP-PTO. This study provides a crucial insight into the structural stabilities of PP-PTO and conventional perovskite.

Abstract:The crystal structure and physical properties of the double perovskite Sr1.1K0.9FeMoO6 have been investigated. The structure of this double-perovskite compound is assigned to a tetragonal system with space group I4/mmm and X-ray diffraction data suggest that the Fe and Mo ions are partially ordered on B-sites. Thermal magnetization demonstrates that the metamagnetic transition temperature is about 275 K. At room temperature the isothermal magnetization, M-H, shows that the saturation magnetic moment per formula unit in the direction of the magnetization is 3.22 mu(B) (300 K). The electrical resistivity is mainly governed by the Stoner spin fluctuation scattering below the metamagnetic transition and by spin waves and phonon scattering above 275 K. Abstract:Electronic structures of double perovskites Sr-2(Mn1-xFex)MoO6 (x = 0-0, 0.5, 1.0) have been studied by using the LSDA + U method, where the on-site Coulomb interaction U of localized d electrons has been considered in the local-spin density approximation. The band structure of Sr2MnMoO6 with antiferromagnetic structure is found to be semiconducting with a gap of 0.5 eV, which is in good agreement with recent optical absorption results. The optical absorption corresponding to this optical threshold is found to be a non-vertical transition, which can occur only if a non-zero momentum such as from phonons participates in the transition. With the increase of x, the band becomes half-metallic and ferrimagnetic. These semiconductor-metal and magnetic structure transitions can be rationalized by different characteristics of charge transfers between Fe-Mo and Mn-Mo via intermediate O 2p orbitals. The down-spin Mo t(2g) states cross the Fermi energy (E-F) in the presence of Fe ions. With the increase of x, more states cross over E-F, which explains the high conductivity in the compound with large x observed in experiment.
Structural determination and electronic properties of 4d perovskite SrPdO3

Abstract:The structure and ground state electronic structure of the recently synthesized SrPdO$_3$ perovskite [A. Galal {\em et al.}, J. Power Sources, {\bf 195}, 3806 (2010)] have been studied by means of screened hybrid functional and the GW approximation with the inclusion of electron-hole interaction within the test-charge/test-charge scheme. By conducting a structural search based on lattice dynamics and group theoretical method we identify the orthorhombic phase with $P_{nma}$ space group as the most stable crystal structure. The phase transition from the ideal cubic perovskite structure to the $P_{nma}$ one is explained in terms of the simultaneous stabilization of the antiferrodistortive phonon modes $R_4^+$ and $M_3^+$. Our results indicate that SrPdO$_3$ exhibits an insulating ground state, substantiated by a GW$_0$ gap of about 1.1 eV. Spin polarized calculations suggests that SrPdO$_3$ adopts a low spin state ($t_{2g}^{\uparrow\downarrow\uparrow\downarrow\uparrow\downarrow}e_g^0$), and is expected to exhibit spin excitations and spin state crossovers at finite temperature, analogous to the case of 3$d$ isoelectronic LaCoO$_3$. This would provide a new playground for the study of spin state transitions in 4$d$ oxides and new opportunity to design multifunctional materials based on 4$d$ $P_{nma}$ building block.

Abstract:By using the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation and the real-space recursion method, we have investigated various magnetic structures in an enlarged double cell of layered perovskite LaSrCoO4. These include the low-spin state (t(2g)(6)e(g)(0)), the intermediate-spin state (t(2g)(5)e(g)(1)), and the high spin state (t(2g)(4)e(g)(2)) as well as all possible combinations among these three states. The densities of states are computed and stabilities of various states are analyzed as functions of the model parameters. For a fixed Hund's coupling j, it is shown that the ground state of LaSrCoO4 transforms first from the antiferromagnetic high-spin state to the ferromagnetically ordered high-spin low-spin state, and then to the nonmagnetic low-spin state as the crystal-field splitting Dq increases. The intermediate-spin state never becomes the ground state of LaSrCoO4. In view of the measured effective magnetic moment of mu (eff)similar to2.6 mu (B), we conclude that the most probable ground state of LaSrCoO4 lies in the regime of ferromagnetically ordered high-spin low-spin state, this state is also consistent with the optical conductivity spectra and neutron-diffraction experiment.

Abstract:This research provides a comprehensive investigation of the double perovskite compound Ba 2 CrWO 6 , emphasizing its structural, electronic, magnetic, thermal, optical, and elastic properties. Analysis revealed that Ba 2 CrWO 6 exhibits a direct half-metallic gap of 1.05 eV along the (X–X) direction, accompanied by a net magnetic moment of 2.00 μ B , significantly influenced by the presence of chromium. In terms of optical characteristics, Ba 2 CrWO 6 demonstrated high absorption rates, indicating its potential applications in optical devices, particularly in ultraviolet (UV) light detection, photodetectors, and UV lasers. Furthermore, the elasticity study indicated that this compound possesses weak brittleness, facilitating handling during manufacturing processes. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method, employed the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), modified Trans-Blaha (TB-mBJ) approach. Additionally, the GGA + U method, which includes the Hubbard correction term ( U ), was utilized to address strong electron correlation effects within the compound. The spin–orbit coupling (SOC) was included to see its effects on the total and partial densities of states, but the results are almost similar to calculations without spin orbit coupling.

The Electronic and Structural Properties in Ca 2 TiMnO 6 Double Perovskite: the First Principle Study

Abstract:We studied the crystal structure of double perovskite Ca2TiMnO6 using ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We used the atomic positions given by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, in order to create a primitive lattice cell structure using visualization software Material Studio. Such sophisticated structure was found in tetragonal perovskite system, with space group with I4/m (#87) and lattice parameter of a = b = c = 5.32 angstrom. The exchange-correlation potential was treated with the Local Density Approximation (LDA) method. The calculations were performed with spin-polarization. The bandgaps for up-spin, net zero and down-spin were reported to be 1.051 eV, 0.988 eV and 1.806 eV respectively. The magnetic element Mn had an impact in tuning the bandstructure when the spin was induced. In summary, this double perovskite emits light when at the down spin state. The energy bandgap is opened, by 63 meV from net zero spin state to the up-spin state. Also, the PDOS illustration explains the reasons behind the changes in the bandstructure, between the up-spin, down-spin and net-zero spin, due to the shifts in the 3 d(5) orbital states. Abstract:The structural and elastic properties of the oxide perovskite HoMnO 3 have been investigated by density-functional theory (DFT) implemented on the Quantum ESPRESSO code for the hexagonal, orthorhombic, rhombohedral and cubic crystal structures in the non-magnetic (NM), ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) configurations. The results show that all these compounds are thermodynamically stable, the hexagonal and the orthorhombic being the most stables in agreement with experimental results. The calculated bulk modulus, B, is about 168.5 ± 1.0 GPa and 178.9 ± 1.0 GPa for hexagonal structure in FM and configurations, respectively, and 188.7 ± 0.6 GPa and 175.6 ± 2.1GPa for orthorhombic structure in FM and AFM configurations, respectively. These values and those of the elastic constants C ij in the present work are comparable to values recently obtained with DFT calculations and experimentally for other perovskites RMnO 3 (R = Eu, Gd, Tb and Dy). The calculated Poisson's ratio is about 0.19; 0.27; 0.23 and 0.3 for hexagonal, orthorhombic, rhombohedral and cubic structure, respectively. The calculated Pugh's ratio is about 1.30; 1.77–1.98; 1.54–1.60 and 2.11, respectively. These results show that the perovskite HoMnO 3 tends to be brittle in hexagonal phase and ductile in cubic phase. In the orthorhombic or rhombohedral phase, it is near brittle-ductile boarder line.

Abstract:By means of synchrotron x-ray and electron diffraction, we studied the structural changes at the charge order transition $T_{CO}$=176 K in the mixed-valence quadruple perovskite (NaMn$_3$)Mn$_4$O$_{12}$. Below $T_{CO}$ we find satellite peaks indicating a commensurate structural modulation with the same propagation vector q =(1/2,0,-1/2) of the CE magnetic order that appears at low temperature, similarly to the case of simple perovskites like La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$. In the present case, the modulated structure together with the observation of a large entropy change at $T_{CO}$ gives evidence of a rare case of full Mn$^{3+}$/Mn$^{4+}$ charge and orbital order consistent with the Goodenough-Kanamori model.
Comparing between steady-state excitonic transitions and ultrafast polaronic photoexcitations in layered perovskites: the role of electron–phonon interaction

Abstract:We have studied four 2D layered perovskites, including OA 2 PbI 4 (RP phase), ODAPbI 4 and BDAPbI 4 (DJ phase), (GA)MAPbI 4 (ACI phase), where OA is [(C m H 2 m +1 )NH 3 ]( m = 8), ODA is [NH 3 (CH 2 ) m NH 3 ]( m = 8), BDA is [NH 3 (CH 2 ) m NH 3 ]( m = 4), and GA is [C(NH 2 ) 3 ]; RP, DJ, and ACI means Ruddlesden–Popper, Dion–Jacobson and alternating cations in the interlayer, respectively. The temperature dependence of absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra have been measured. From which the average phonon energy (electron-phonon interaction strength) is analyzed as around 34 (80), 47 (184), 50 (402), and 63 (758) with the unit of meV for OA 2 PbI 4 , ODAPbI 4, BDAPbI 4 , and (GA)MAPbI 4 , respectively. Larger phonon energy indicates the involvement of more phonons in organic spacer layer, with the corresponding stronger electron-phonon interaction. Furthermore, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy proves that, when the excitation photon energy is serval hundred meV higher than bandgap, the excitons still are the major photoexcitations in OA 2 PbI 4 , but polarons are major one in ODAPbI 4 , BDAPbI 4 , and (GA)MAPbI 4 films, no matter the excitonic transitions dominate the absorption at their band edges. This work proves the organic spacers can regulate electron–phonon interaction then optoelectronic properties in 2D perovskites profoundly, which have implications toward future rational design for relevant devices.

Abstract:A new perovskite KOsO3 has been stabilized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. It is cubic at 500 K ( Pm−3m ) and undergoes subsequent phase transitions to tetragonal at 320 K ( P4/mmm ) and rhombohedral ( R−3m ) at 230 K as shown from refining synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction (SXRD) data. The larger orbital overlap integral and the extended wave function of 5d electrons in the perovskite KOsO3 allow to explore physics from the regime where Mott and Hund's rule couplings dominate to the state where the multiple interactions are on equal footing. We demonstrate an exotic magnetic ordering phase found by neutron powder diffraction along with physical properties via a suite of measurements including magnetic and transport properties, differential scanning calorimetry, and specific heat, which provide comprehensive information for a system at the crossover from localized to itinerant electronic behavior. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.156701 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:In this research, the structural properties, phonons, mechanical stability, and optoelectronic properties of silicon-based Ca 2 TiSiO 6 ordered double perovskites oxides are computed employing the DFT approach within the WIEN2K quantum mechanical code. The LDA, PBE-GGA, and TB-mBJ potentials are used, and it is found that the TB-mBJ potential gives more accurate results for optoelectronic properties. Our computed results for structural properties are entirely consistent with the experimental results. The calculations of phonons and the criterion of Born-Huang's mechanical stability confirm the dynamical, structural, and mechanical stability of quaternary Si-based Ca 2 TiSiO 6 material. The elastic constants C ij , Pugh ratio B/G, and Poisson's ratio ʋ verify that the interested material is stiff, malleable, and resistant to shear strain. The computed spectral curves for various optical parameters reveal the robust responsiveness of the Ca 2 TiSiO 6 material to UV wavelengths. This suggests promising applications in ultraviolet detectors, photo-catalysis, photo-detectors, solar cells, and other optoelectronic devices where efficient light absorption is essential for optimal functionality. Our research on silicon-based Ca 2 TiSiO 6 double perovskite oxide will provide a base framework for experimental materials scientists.

Three-dimensional perovskites like methylammonium lead iodide are determined to be ferroelastic. Layered perovskites have been applied in optoelectronic devices with outstanding performance. However, the understanding of lattice strain and ferroelasticity in layered perovskites is still lacking. Here, using the in-situ observation of switching domains in layered perovskite single crystals under external strain, we discover the evidence of ferroelasticity in layered perovskites with layer number more than one, while the perovskites with single octahedra layer do not show ferroelasticity. Density functional theory calculation shows that ferroelasticity in layered perovskites originates from the distortion of inorganic octahedra resulting from the rotation of aspherical methylammonium cations. The absence of methylammonium cations in single layer perovskite accounts for the lack of ferroelasticity. These ferroelastic domains do not induce non-radiative recombination or reduce the photoluminescence quantum yield.

Abstract:Recent studies have highlighted the collective rotations of corner-shared oxygen octahedra in ABO3 functional perovskite oxides. However, experimental methods that allow direct measurements of oxygen octahedra, especially for the multilayer containing different types of oxygen octahedral rotations in each layer, are still rare. In this report, the correlation between oxygen octahedral rotation and cation-lattice symmetry is discussed by studying the interface-engineered perovskite La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 layers. The out-of-phase octahedral rotations remove the orthogonality between corresponding axes of the cation lattice, leading to the asymmetric diffraction pattern recorded by the reciprocal space mapping. More importantly, in the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3-multilayer heterostructure, the reciprocal space mapping can identify different octahedral rotations for each La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 layer, explaining the appearance of multiple Curie temperatures and coercive fields. Our results reveal the new understanding of the old reciprocal space mapping-based technique, based on the correlation between oxygen octahedral rotation and cation-lattice symmetry. The application of reciprocal space mapping to the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3-multilayers not only showcases the advantage of this technique but also extends our understanding of oxygen octahedral rotation to the more complicated oxide heterostructures.
Exotic Structural and Optoelectronic Properties of Layered Halide Double Perovskite Polymorphs

Abstract:Discovering new types of layered perovskites has great importance for designing novel optoelectronic devices. In this article, combining first‐principle calculations with global structure searching, it is found that Rb4SnSb2Br12, a typical halide double perovskite, can unexpectedly possess fertile low formation‐energy polymorphs holding van de Walls (vdW) layered structures. Consequently, these polymorphs can be effectively classified into 12 types according to their local octahedral motifs, exhibiting a wide range of bandgap covering the visible spectrum. Interestingly, the structure‐dependent bandgap in these polymorphs can be well understood by developing a simple machine learning model. Moreover, as a layered system, the optoelectronic properties of Rb4SnSb2Br12 can be effectively tuned by the layer thickness, and both type‐I and type‐II band alignment can be achieved in single‐compound Rb4SnSb2Br12 heterojunctions. Finally, it is suggested that the Sn‐moderate condition can be considered to grow intrinsic p‐type Rb4SnSb2Br12 with lower defect density. Those findings not only provide a promising material system for designing the vdW tandem solar cell, but also offer a new opportunity to achieve exotic optoelectronic applications in a single‐phase layered perovskite compound.
