Abstract:In this study, a sonochemical approach was utilised for the development of graphene-gold (G-Au) nanocomposite. Through the sonochemical method, simultaneous exfoliation of graphite and the reduction of gold chloride occurs to produce highly crystalline G-Au nanocomposite. The in situ growth of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) took place on the surface of exfoliated few-layer graphene sheets. The G-Au nanocomposite was characterised by UV-vis, XRD, FTIR, TEM, XPS and Raman spectroscopy techniques. This G-Au nanocomposite was used to modify glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to fabricate an electrochemical sensor for the selective detection of nitric oxide (NO), a critical cancer biomarker. G-Au modified GCE exhibited an enhanced electrocatalytic response towards the oxidation of NO as compared to other control electrodes. The electrochemical detection of NO was investigated by linear sweep voltammetry analysis, utilising the G-Au modified GCE in a linear range of 10-5000μM which exhibited a limit of detection of 0.04μM (S/N=3). Furthermore, this enzyme-free G-Au/GCE exhibited an excellent selectivity towards NO in the presence of interferences. The synergistic effect of graphene and AuNPs, which facilitated exceptional electron-transfer processes between the electrolyte and the GCE thereby improving the sensing performance of the fabricated G-Au modified electrode with stable and reproducible responses. This G-Au nanocomposite introduces a new electrode material in the sensitive and selective detection of NO, a prominent biomarker of cancer.

Abstract:A one-step approach to synthesize functional two-dimensional graphene/SnO2 composite nanosheets (GSCN) is reported. It should be noted that SnCl2 is not only a reducing agent for graphene oxide (GO), but also a precursor of SnO2. On the other hand, polyelectrolyte poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) was introduced simultaneously in the preparation, to endow it with an ideal self-assembly building block. Through electrostatic interaction, a general method has been developed for the preparation of ternary GSCN/nanoparticles (GSCN/NPs) hybrid structures with high-density noble metal NPs. Prominent examples including Au, Pt and Au@Pt hybrid NPs could be loaded on the surface of GSCN. Furthermore, we employed high-density Au@Pt NPs supported on GSCN as the electrochemical material for nonenzymatic glucose detection, which exhibited good electrocatalytic activity.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on one-pot synthesis of Ag nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide (AgNPs/rGO) nanocomposites by heating mixed solution of graphene oxide (GO) and AgNO3 with the use of diethylenetriamine as a reducing agent at 80°C for 30min. Several analytical techniques including UV–vis spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been employed to characterize the resulting nanocomposites. It was found that such nanocomposites exhibit good catalytic activity toward the reduction of H2O2. This nonenzymatic H2O2 sensor shows a fast amperometric response time of less than 2s. The linear detection range is estimated to be from 0.1 to 100mM (r=0.999), and the detection limit is estimated to be 3.6μM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3.

Abstract:PtAu bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully synthesized on single-stranded DNA functionalized graphene nanomaterials (ss-DNA/GR) via a simple chemical reduction method. The nanocomposites (PtAu/ss-DNA/GR) were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) and electrochemical techniques. Then a sensitive dopamine (DA) sensor was fabricated based on PtAu/ss-DNA/GR nanocomposites modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The results of electrochemical experiments demonstrated that the sensor exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity to the oxidation of DA. The sensor displayed wide linear detection range from 8.0×10-8 to 1.0×10-5 M and 1.0×10-5 to 5.0×10-5 M and a low detection limit of 1.0×10-8 M (S/N = 3). In addition, the sensor also showed high selectivity, good reproducibility and stability for DA detection. Thus, it is considered to be an ideal candidate for practical application.

Abstract:Rationally designing the composition and structure of metallic nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide hybrids is highly important for synthesizing active electrocatalysts. Herein, we report a one-step method to efficiently synthesize dendritic bimetallic PtPd nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide (DPtPd/rGO) in aqueous solution at room temperature. The proposed synthesis is performed by a simple sonication treatment of an aqueous reactive mixture containing K2PtCl4, Na2PdCl4, Pluronic F127 and ascorbic acid. This method is greatly simplified compared to the traditional multi-step-seeded growth or other hydrothermal syntheses. The as-made DPtPd/rGO hybrid consists in spatially and locally separated dendritic PtPd nanoparticles well-dispersed on the surface of rGO and is an active catalyst for methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction reactions. The proposed strategy is an effective method to directly fabricate metals/rGO hybrids for electrocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Graphene oxide nanosheet is an ideal platform to capture nanoparticles for highly efficient catalysis, electrochemical sensing and biosensing. In this work, we have described a simple synthesis method for preparation graphene oxide– Au nanohybrid. Au nanodots with an average size of 1.6 nm uniformly dispersed on the surface of graphene oxide. The well-defined nanostructure has been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The nanohybrid also exhibits enhanced catalytic activity toward the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by NaBH4 . Comparing with pure Au nanodots and graphene oxide, graphene oxide– Au nanohybrid shows the highest catalytic activity. This approach not only suggests a wide potential application of graphene oxide nanosheet as a host material for supporting a variety of nanoparticles, but also provides a new approach for the fabrication of graphene-based nanohybrids with multiple physical and chemical properties.

Abstract:Ag nanoparticles-decorated reduced graphene oxide (AgNPs-rGO) has been successfully fabricated through a one-step strategy, carried out by hydrothermal treatment of the mixture of AgNO3 and GO solution under strong alkaline conditions at 180°C for 30min. The reaction was accomplished without extra reducing agent and surface modifier. As-synthesized AgNPs-rGO has been successfully applied in catalytic performance toward the reduction of H2O2. This H2O2 sensor shows a wide linear range of 0.1–60mM (r=0.991) and a low detection limit of 1.80μM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3.

Abstract:In this study, we have developed a simple and green method for one-pot synthesis of ultrathin gold nanocrystals attached to graphene through photo irradiation. High-yield ultrathin Au nanocrystals are distributed on the reduced graphene oxide, immediately followed by the deoxygenation of graphene oxide in the absence of chemical reductants and surfactants. The procedure has been thoroughly completed and the products have been analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. The results show that both graphene oxide and photo irradiation play essential roles in the formation of ultrathin Au nanocrystals. The nanohybrids also display excellent electro-catalytical performance to methanol oxidation. This study not only has potential in the applications of bio-sensing and fuel cells, but also provides new procedures for the preparation of metal/graphene nanomaterials.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a cost-effective and simple route for the synthesis of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) decorated graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets using polyoxyethylene sorbitol anhydride monolaurate (TWEEN 20) as a stabilizing agent for GO as well as a reducing and immobilizing agent for AuNPs. The AuNPs assemble on the surface of TWEEN-functionalized GO by the in situ reduction of HAuCl(4) aqueous solution. The morphologies of these composites were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is found that the resultant AuNPs decorated GO nanosheets (AuNPs/TWEEN/GO) exhibit remarkable catalytic performance for hydrazine oxidation. This hydrazine sensor has a fast amperometric response time of less than 3s. The linear range is estimated to be from 5 μM to 3 mM (r=0.999), and the detection limit is estimated to be 78 nM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. The AuNPs/TWEEN/GO composites also exhibit good catalytic activity toward 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction and the GO supports also enhance the catalytic activity via a synergistic effect.

Abstract:In this contribution, we demonstrate a green, cost-effective, one-pot preparative route toward Ag nanoparticles-graphene (AgNPs-G) nanocomposites in aqueous solution with the use of tannic acid (TA), an environmentally friendly and water-soluble polyphenol, as a reducing agent. Such AgNPs-G nanocomposites were synthesized through one-pot reduction of AgNO3 and GO by TA. We investigated surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and electrochemical properties of the resultant AgNPs-G nanocomposites. It is found that such AgNPs-G nanocomposites show excellent SERS activity as SERS substrates and exhibit notable catalytic performance toward the reduction of H2O2. This enzymeless H2O2 sensor has a fast amperometric response time of less than 2 s. The linear range is estimated to be from 1 x 10(-4) M to 0.01M (r = 0.999) and the detection limit is estimated to be 7 x 10(-6) M at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. A glucose biosensor was further fabricated by immobilizing glucose oxidase (GOD) into chitosan-AgNPs-G nanocomposite film on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). This sensor exhibits good response to glucose, and the linear response range is estimated to be from 2 to 10 mM (R = 0.996) at -0.5 V. The detection limit of 100 mu M was achieved at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. More importantly, we demonstrate successfully its application for glucose detection in human blood serum.

Abstract:We demonstrated a facile one-step synthesis strategy for the preparation of a large-scale reduced graphene oxide multilayered film doped with gold nanoparticles (RGO/AuNP film) and applied this film as functional nanomaterials for electrochemistry and Raman detection applications. The related applications of the fabricated RGO/AuNP film in electrochemical nonenzymatic H2O2 biosensor, electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection were investigated. Electrochemical data indicate that the H2O2 biosensor fabricated by RGO/AuNP film shows a wide linear range, low limitation of detection, high selectivity, and long-term stability. In addition, it was proved that the created RGO/AuNP film also exhibits excellent ORR electrochemical catalysis performance. The created RGO/AuNP film, when serving as SERS biodetection platform, presents outstanding performances in detecting 4-aminothiophenol with an enhancement factor of approximately 5.6 x 10(5) as well as 2-thiouracil sensing with a low concentration to I mu M. It is expected that this facile strategy for fabricating large-scale graphene film doped with metallic nanoparticles will spark inspirations in preparing functional nanomaterials and further extend their applications in drug delivery, wastewater purification, and bioenergy.

Abstract:A simple one-step method was developed for the synthesis of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)–Au nanoparticles (PEDOT–AuNPs) composite film by using a co-electrodeposition technique. The composites were further characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and UV–vis spectroscopy, which indicated that the uniform distribution of AuNPs was found within the conducting polymer films. Electrocatalytic properties of the composites toward the nitrite oxidation have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. It was found that such PEDOT–AuNPs composites modified electrode showed a very high electrochemical activity for electrocatalytic oxidation of nitrite, which was utilized as the basis of the fabrication of a nonenzymatic sensor for electrochemical detection of nitrite. The sensor can be applied to the quantification of nitrite with a linear range covering from 3 to 300μM and a low detection limit of 0.1μM. Furthermore, the experiment results also showed that the sensor exhibited good reproducibility and long-term stability, as well as high selectivity.

Abstract:A one-step electrochemical approach for synthesis of Pt nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide (Pt/RGO) was demonstrated. Graphene oxide (GO) and chloroplatinic acid were reduced to RGO and Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) simultaneously, and Pt/RGO composite was deposited on the fluorine doped SnO2 glass during the electrochemical reduction. The Pt/RGO composite was characterized by field emission-scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which confirmed the reduction of GO and chloroplatinic acid and the formation of Pt/RGO composite. In comparison with Pt NPs and RGO electrodes obtained by the same method, results of cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements showed that the composite electrode had higher catalytic activity and charge transfer rate. In addition, the composite electrode had proved to have better performance in DSSCs than the Pt NPs electrode, which showed the potential application in energy conversion.

Abstract:A green, facile, one-pot synthesis of well-defined Au NPs@POM-GNSs tricomponent nanohybrids is reported (POM stands for polyoxometalate and GNSs for graphene nanosheets). The synthesis is convenient, rapid and environmentally friendly. The POMs serve as both reducing, encapsulating molecules, and bridging molecules; this avoids the introduction of other organic toxic molecules. Characterization using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy analysis is performed, and the structure of the prepared nanohybrids of Au NPs@POM-GNSs is verified. Most importantly, the amperometric measurements show the Au NPs@POM-GNSs nanohybrids have high catalytic activity with good sensitivity, good long-term stability, wide linear range, low detection limit, and fast response towards H(2)O(2) detection for application as an enzyme-free biosensor. Transformation of the POMs during H(2)O(2) detection does not affect the catalytic activities of the nanohybrids. Thus, the synergistic effect of Au NPs and GNSs in the nanohybrids leads to the enhanced catalytic property.

Abstract:CuS-graphene nanosheet (GNS) composites with well-defined morphology have been successfully fabricated via a simple one-pot hydrothermal route by using thioacetamide (TAA) as both the sulfur source and reducing agent. The as-prepared CuS-GNS composites with an appropriate content of graphene exhibited an even higher peroxidase-like catalytic activity than pristine CuS nanoparticles in acetate buffer solution (pH = 4.0), which provided a facile method for the colorimetric detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). It was calculated that H2O2 could be detected as low as 1.2 mu M (S/N = 3) with a wide linear range from 2.0 to 20.0 mu M (R-2 = 0.992), indicating that the as-prepared catalyst as an artificial peroxidase is promising for application in biosensors and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Ag nanoparticles/graphene nanosheets (Ag NPs/GNs) have been fabricated using graphene nanosheets (GNs) as frames for the growth of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs). The prepared nanocatalysts were characterized using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, field electron scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical activity of the Ag NPs/GNs for the detection of H2O2 was explored using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry, indicating that the Ag NPs/GNs can remarkably facilitate H2O2 redox in phosphate buffer solution. Further comparative investigations show that the as-prepared Ag nanocatalysts exhibit a wide linear range, a high response, and a short response time for H2O2 detection. To further exploit the practical applications in H2O2 detection, the homemade electrochemical cells were employed to power the Ag NPs/GNs electrode sensor by chemical energy without external power sources. The results expand the applications of the graphene-based sensors and propose a feasible self-powered biochemical sensing approach independent of conventional power sources.
