Abstract:Lignin valorization is considered an important part of the modern biorefinery scheme. The unique structure and composition of lignin may offer many effective routes to produce several bulk chemicals and functional materials. Thermochemical conversion of lignin to synthesize value-added functional materials has recently attracted a lot of attention. In this review, we have presented currently available approaches and strategies for the thermochemical conversion of lignin to functional carbon materials. The transformation behavior and mechanism of lignin during the thermochemical process (e.g., pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization) are illuminated. Abstract:Abstract Developing novel techniques to convert lignin into sustainable chemicals and functional materials is a critical route toward the high-value utilization of lignocellulosic biomass. Lignin-derived carbon materials hold great promise for applications in energy and chemical engineering, catalysis and environmental remediation. In this review, the state-of-art sciences and technologies for controllable synthesis of lignin-derived carbon materials are summarized, pore structure engineering, crystalline engineering, and morphology controlling methodologies are thoroughly outlined and critically discussed. Green chemical engineering with cost-effectiveness and precise carbonization tuning microstructure are future research trends of lignin-derived carbon materials. Future research directions that could be employed to advance lignin-derived carbon materials toward commercial applications are then proposed.

Abstract:Lignin, an underutilized component of lignocellulosic biomass, is regarded as a rich reservoir for the production of aromatic chemicals and fuels. Despite extensive research in recent years, lignin's potential is far from being fully unlocked. Photocatalysis that uses sustainable solar energy to drive lignin conversion under mild conditions has been identified as a promising strategy and received growing research interest. This review aims to present a critical introduction to the photocatalytic conversion of lignin, including a summary of lignin conversion pathways and mechanisms, as well as the latest cutting-edge innovations on photocatalyst design and reactor construction. Moreover, the screening of solvents and regulation of other key factors that are involved in photocatalytic lignin conversion are also elucidated and future perspectives and challenges for photocatalytic conversion of lignin into valuable products are discussed.

Abstract:In pursuit of low-carbon development, the production of diverse functional materials from renewable resources, especially lignocellulosic biomass, is of vital importance. Lignin is a major component of lignocellulose, and it is nature's only true high-volume aromatic polymer, which has the advantages of biodegradability, biocompati-bility, and low acquisition cost. After modification by a variety of physicochemical strategies, it can be applied as an alternative to basic industrial materials, including polyurethanes, phenolic, and epoxy resins, which stands comparably to conventional synthetic polymers in terms of both performance and reduced cost. To further un-lock the potential of lignin, an alluring opportunity is the exploitation of lignin for high-value materials, espe-cially nanomaterials, that find extensive applications in energy and environment areas. This review provides a systematic summary and perspective of research that has been devoted to lignin transformation to high-value materials, ranging from industrially well-established engineering materials to the recently emerged nano -materials that were used for energy and environment applications. Latest cutting-edge innovations on lignin modification, controlled depolymerization, and assembly during the last five years are summarized. Structure -function relationships of lignin materials in terms of their specific applications are analyzed. Furthermore, challenges and future opportunities for lignin conversion to high-value materials are also provided. We wish this review will stimulate further advances in lignin based high-value materials, and promote "waste" into "wealth".

In this review, we discuss various techniques and strategies used to synthesize lignin-derived functional materials. Abstract:Lignin has long been regarded as waste, readily separated and discarded from the pulp and paper industry. However, as the most abundant aromatic renewable biopolymer in nature, lignin can replace petroleum resources to prepare chemicals containing benzene rings. Therefore, the high-value transformation of lignin has attracted the interest of both academia and industry. Nitrogen-containing compounds and functionalized materials are a class of compounds that have wide applications in chemistry, materials science, energy storage, and other fields. Converting lignin into nitrogenous chemicals and materials is a high-value utilization pathway. Currently, there is a large amount of literature exploring the conversion of lignin. However, a comprehensive review of the transformation of lignin to nitrogenous compounds is lacking. The research progress of lignin conversion to nitrogenous chemicals and functional materials is reviewed in this article. This article provides an overview of the chemical structure and types of industrial lignin, methods of lignin modification, as well as nitrogen-containing chemicals and functional materials prepared from various types of lignin, including their applications in wastewater treatment, slow-release fertilizer, adhesive, coating, and biomedical fields. In addition, the challenges and limitations of nitrogenous lignin-based materials encountered during the development of applications are also discussed. It is believed that this review will act as a key reference and inspiration for researchers in the biomass and material field.

Abstract:Lignin is the only sustainable aromatic resource in nature, its utilization has attracted much attention worldwide. Oxidation is one of the promising strategies that can convert lignin to a range of value-added platform chemicals. Lignin oxidation is generally carried out in a liquid phase with employed catalytic systems and oxidants, and this process is largely influenced by operation conditions, catalyst types, presence of oxidant, and solvent species. The inter-unit linkages in lignin can be selectively oxidized with the assistance of designed catalytic systems, facilitating the formation of aromatics (phenolic aldehydes, ketones, and acids), benzoquinones, and aliphatic (di)carboxylic acids. This work aims to provide a comprehensive review on traditional and advanced lignin oxidation concerning various catalytic systems for different terminal products. Deficiency in current lignin oxidation is also mentioned which indicates the direction of further lignin oxidative valorization.

Abstract:Lignin, as the second largest renewable biomass resource in nature, has increasingly received significant interest for its potential to be transformed into valuable chemicals, potentially contributing to carbon neutrality. Among different approaches, renewable electricity-driven biomass conversion holds great promise to substitute a petroleum resource-driven one, owing to its characteristics of environmental friendliness, high energy efficiency, and tunable reactivity. The challenges lie on the polymeric structure and complex functional groups in lignin, requiring the development of efficient electrocatalysts for lignin valorization with enhanced activity and selectivity toward targeted chemicals. In this Review, we focus on the advancement of electrocatalytic valorization of lignin, from monomers, to dimers and to raw lignin, toward various value-added chemicals, with emphasis on catalyst design, reaction innovation, and mechanistic study. The general strategies for catalyst design are also summarized, offering insights into enhancing the activity and selectivity. Finally, challenges and perspectives for the electrocatalytic conversion of lignin are proposed.

Abstract:The depletion of traditional fossil fuel reserves and ever-increasing environmental problems have prompted the demand for the exploration of renewable resources. Lignin is an earth-abundant but underestimated and underutilized renewable energy source, which has the potential to replace fossil fuels for the production of value-added aromatic derivatives. Despite great efforts have been devoted, fully unlocking the potential of lignin is still far from reaching due to its complex structure and recalcitrant nature. Recently, photocatalysis provides a marvelous platform for pursuing versatile lignin transformation and has attracted growing interests from the academic community. The unique photogenerated reactive species as well as the mild reaction conditions enable the selective cleavage of targeted bond in lignin, while other functional groups remain intact. In this critical review, we attempt to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art advances in the principal photocatalytic processes applied for the conversion of lignin using various photocatalysts. This review focuses on the latest investigation of lignin conversion mechanisms with emphasis on selective C–O and C–C bond cleavage. Introduction to lignin structure, technical lignin and lignin model compounds is highlighted. In addition, general mechanisms of photocatalysis are also classified and discussed in detail. We conclude the perspective on photocatalytic transformation of lignin with an eye toward the future challenges in this field.

Abstract:Nowadays and in the future, environment and energy are important issues that people have to consider. In order to achieve energy sustainability and minimize the increase in environmental pressure, researchers have begun to gradually develop new ways of energy access. Biomass resource is a sustainable and efficient mode of energy supply, which has little impact on the environment. Among them, lignin is a rich organic compound in natural plants and is a promising biomass source. According to different forms of energy, different lignin catalytic cracking reactions can be used. This paper systematically summarizes the research progress of lignin catalytic cracking under different energy effects and focuses on the opportunities of lignin catalytic cracking at this stage. The challenges and future research directions of lignin catalytic cracking and directional conversion composite catalytic system are summarized and discussed. On this basis, a critical perspective based on experiment is proposed. It provides a richer catalytic model for the efficient conversion of lignin into fuel and high-value chemicals in the future. In conclusion, this Review offers insights into future directions for catalytic cracking of lignin through synergistic utilization of multiple energy sources.

Abstract:Lignin, the most abundant aromatic biopolymer, is emerging as a mainstay of the upcoming revolution in sustainable materials processing. Despite the inherent challenges associated with the heterogeneous structure of lignin, significant progress has recently been made in developing innovative strategies to valorize this fascinating aromatic biopolymer to deliver industry‐demanded products via photoreactions. The purpose of this review is to unravel insights into these creative approaches in lignin‐assisted photoreactions, focusing on photopolymerization to construct functional polymeric materials and photoreduction to provide valuable chemicals, wherein lignin serves as a macromolecular photoinitiator and a reductive photocatalyst, respectively. The existing strategies for improving the photochemical quantum yield of lignin in photopolymerization and harnessing lignin macromolecules as photoresponsive polymers to facilitate electron transfer in photocatalytic reactions are also summarized. In the future, such photochemical lignin valorization concepts could potentially provide new possibilities for achieving a profitable value chain for integrated biorefinery processes.

Abstract:As the most abundant natural aromatic polymer, tens of million of tons of lignin produced in paper-making or biorefinery industry are used as fuel annually, which is a low-value utilization. Moreover, burning lignin results in large amounts of carbon dioxide and pollutants in the air. The potential of lignin is far from being fully exploited and the search for high value-added application of lignin is highly pursued. Because of the high carbon content of lignin, converting lignin into advanced carbon-based structural or functional materials is regarded as one of the most promising solutions for both environmental protection and utilization of renewable resources. Significant progresses in lignin-based carbon materials (LCMs) including porous carbon, activated carbon, carbon fiber, carbon aerogel, nanostructured carbon, etc., for various valued applications have been witnessed in recent years. Here, this review summarized the recent advances in LCMs from the perspectives of preparation, structure, and applications. In particular, this review attempts to figure out the intrinsic relationship between the structure and functionalities of LCMs from their recent applications. Hopefully, some thoughts and discussions on the structure-property relationship of LCMs can inspire researchers to stride over the present barriers in the preparation and applications of LCMs.

Abstract:As the only natural source of aromatic biopolymers, lignin can be converted into value-added chemicals and biofuels, showing great potential in realizing the development of green chemistry. At present, lignin is predominantly used for combustion to generate energy, and the real value of lignin is difficult to maximize. Accordingly, the depolymerization of lignin is of great significance for its high-value utilization. This review discusses the latest progress in the field of lignin depolymerization, including catalytic conversion systems using various thermochemical, chemocatalytic, photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and biological depolymerization methods, as well as the involved reaction mechanisms and obtained products of various protocols, focusing on green and efficient lignin depolymerization strategies. In addition, the challenges faced by lignin depolymerization are also expounded, putting forward possible directions of developing lignin depolymerization strategies in the future.

Abstract:Lignin is the second most earth-abundant biopolymer having aromatic unit structures, but it has received less attention than other natural biomaterials. Recent advances in the development of lignin-based materials, such as mesoporous carbon, flexible thin films, and fiber matrix, have found their way into applications to photovoltaic devices, energy-storage systems, mechanical energy harvesters, and catalytic components. In this Review, we summarize and suggest another dimension of lignin valorization as a building block for the synthesis of functional materials in the fields of energy and environmental applications. We cover lignin-based materials in the photovoltaic and artificial photosynthesis for solar energy conversion applications. The most recent technological evolution in lignin-based triboelectric nanogenerators is summarized from its fundamental properties to practical implementations. Lignin-derived catalysts for solar-to-heat conversion and oxygen reduction are discussed. For energy-storage applications, we describe the utilization of lignin-based materials in lithium-ion rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors (e.g., electrodes, binders, and separators). We also summarize the use of lignin-based materials as heavy-metal adsorbents for environmental remediation. This Review paves the way to future potentials and opportunities of lignin as a renewable material for energy and environmental applications.

Abstract:Efficiently converting renewable lignin into valuable chemicals and fuels holds great significance in solving energy crises and mitigating global warming. Based on the high specific surface area, controllable structures and pores, functionalized overall frameworks, and designable catalytic sites, the rational design of MOF‐ and COF‐based catalysts is a promising way to achieve conversion of lignin‐related substances. The conversion of the biomass into eco‐friendly fuels and chemicals has been extensively recognized as the essential pathway to achieve the sustainable economy and carbon neutral society. Lignin, as a kind of promising biomass energy, has been certified to produce the high‐valued chemicals and fuels. Numerous efforts have been made to develop various catalysts for lignin catalytic conversion. Both metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) belong to very important heterogeneous porous catalysts due to their regular porous structures, high specific surface area, and precisely tailored diversities. In the review, the first part focused on the catalytic conversion of lignin, lignin model compounds, and lignin derivatives using the pristine MOFs, functional MOF composites, and MOF‐derived materials. The second part summarized the catalytic conversion of lignin model compounds using pristine COFs and functional COF composites. The review here mainly concentrated on the design of the materials, screening of catalytic conditions, and explorations of the corresponded mechanisms. Specifically, (1) we summarized the MOF‐ and COF‐based materials for the effects on the catalytic transformation of lignin‐related substances; (2) we emphasized the catalytic mechanism of C–C and C–O bonds cleavage together with the structure–activity relationships; (3) we in‐depth realized the relationship between the chemical/electronic/structural properties of the MOF‐ and COF‐based catalysts and their catalytic performance for lignin‐related substances. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives were also discussed on the catalytic conversion of lignin‐related substances by MOF‐ and COF‐based catalysts.

Abstract:Lignin exhibited numerous advantages such as plentiful functional groups, good biocompatibility, low toxicity, and high carbon content, which can be transformed into composites and carbon materials. Lignin-based materials are usually environmentally friendly and low cost, and are widely used in energy storage, environment, electronic devices, and other fields. In this review article, the pretreatment separation methods like hydrothermal process are illustrated briefly, and the properties and categories of technical lignin are introduced. Then, the latest progress of lignin-based composites and lignin-derived carbon materials is summarized. Finally, the current challenges and future developments were suggested based on our knowledge. It is expected that this review paper favored the applications of composites and lignin-derived carbon materials in the future.

Abstract:Developing renewable biomass resources is an urgent task to reduce climate change. Lignin, the only renewable aromatic feedstock present in nature, has attracted considerable global interest in its transformation and utilization. However, the complexity of lignin’s structure, uncertain linkages, stability of side chain connection, and inevitable recondensation of reaction fragments make lignin depolymerization into biofuels or platform chemicals a daunting challenge. Therefore, understanding the structural characteristics and reactivity relationships is crucial for achieving high-value utilization of lignin. In this review, we summarize the key achievements in the field of lignin conversion with a focus on the effects of the β-O-4 content, S/G ratio, lignin sources, and an “ideal” lignin—catechyl lignin. We discuss how these characteristics influence the formation of lignin monomer products and provide an outlook on the future direction of lignin depolymerization.

Abstract:As increasing attention has been paid to applications of lignin-derived energy storage materials in the last decade, most studies pursue the improvement of electrochemical performance obtained from novel lignin sources, or structure and surface modifications of synthesized materials, while the study on the mechanisms of lignin thermochemical conversion is rare. This review emphasizes on establishing a process-structure-properties-performance correlation across multiple key aspects associated with valorizing lignin from a byproduct of biorefineries to high performance energy storage materials. Such information is the key to a rationally designed process for the low-cost production of carbon materials from lignin.
