Abstract:Low-saturation liquid-containing granular materials are commonly encountered in both natural and industrial settings, where interstitial liquids significantly affect the motion of particles, while particle size polydispersity plays a crucial role in determining the level of system cohesion. In this study, the collapse of wet polydisperse granular columns is numerically investigated based on the developed discrete element model, with corresponding dam-break experiments performed to validate our numerical model and methodology. The dependence of the dynamics and flow mobility on particle size distribution is primarily examined, and the underlying mechanisms are also explored by analyzing particle path lengths and average fidelity. Building upon the effective Bond number proposed using the mixing theory, a macroscopic cohesion parameter at the material scale is defined by considering the dependence of the collapse on the system size effect. The relevance of this cohesion parameter in describing different wet polydisperse granular collapses is further validated based on our designed experimental tests and DEM simulations. The approach of constructing the cohesion parameters at different scales can be extended to characterize cohesion effects in more complex wet polydisperse granular flows and describe their associated rheological behaviors.

Abstract:The unchannelized collapse of wet granular columns in the pendular state is investigated experimentally. Three different collapse regimes are observed in experiments, which are significantly dependent on the particle size as well as the initial aspect ratio of the column, while the water content has a quantitative effect on final deposit morphology. A dimensionless number containing the particle size and the water content is proposed to quantitatively characterize the macroscopic cohesion induced by the presence of water. On this basis, a phase diagram is put forward for describing different collapse regimes of wet granular materials. Furthermore, the dynamics and the resulting deposit morphology after collapse are primarily examined based on a series of experiments, particularly in two typical collapse regimes, where the coupling effects of particle size, water content, and initial aspect ratio of the column are mainly considered. Finally, generalized scaling laws have been developed to characterize the dependency of the deposit morphology on two relevant variables: the initial aspect ratio and the proposed dimensionless parameter. The morphological quantities in the wet case may be determined by respectively adding the variations caused by the cohesion effect to the results of dry granular material. The proposed scaling laws can be well degraded to those obtained in dry granular material when the cohesive effect inside wet granular material is weak enough. This implies that generalized scaling laws can be applicable to the collapse of granular material in a wider range of situations.

Abstract:The effects of dilatancy on the collapse dynamics of granular materials in air or in a liquid are studied experimentally and numerically. Experiments show that dilatancy has a critical effect on the collapse of granular columns in the presence of an ambient fluid. Two regimes of the collapse, one being quick and the other being slow, are observed from the experiments and the underlying reasons are analyzed. A two-fluid smoothed particle hydrodynamics model, based on the granular-fluid mixture theory and the critical state theory, is employed to investigate the complex interactions between the solid particles and the ambient water. It is found that dilatancy, resulting in large effective stress and large frictional coefficient between solid particles, helps form the slow regime. Small permeability, representing large inter-phase drag force, also retards the collapse significantly. The proposed numerical model is capable of reproducing these effects qualitatively.

Abstract:In order to understand the dynamics of granular flow on an erodible base soil, in this paper, a series of material point method - based granular column collapse tests were conducted to investigate numerically the mobility and dynamic erosion process of granular flow subjected to the complex settings, i.e., the aspect ratio, granular mass, friction and dilatancy resistance, gravity and presence of water. A set of power scaling laws were proposed to describe the final deposit characteristics of granular flow by the relations of the normalized run - out distance and the normalized final height of granular flow against the aspect ratio, being greatly affected by the complex geological settings, e.g., granular mass, the friction and dilatancy resistance of granular soil, and presence of water in granular flow. An index of the coefficient of friction of granular soil was defined as a ratio of the target coefficient of friction over the initial coefficient of friction to quantify the scaling extent of friction change (i.e., friction strengthening or weakening). There is a characteristic aspect ratio of granular column corresponding to the maximum mobility of granular flow with the minimum index of the apparent coefficient of friction. The index of the repose coefficient of friction of granular flow decreased gradually with the increase in aspect ratio because higher potential energy of granular column at a larger aspect ratio causes a larger kinetic energy of granular soil to weaken the friction of granular soil as a kind of velocity - related friction weakening. An increase in granular mass reduces gradually the indexes of the apparent and repose coefficients of friction of granular soil to enhance the mobility of granular flow. The mobility of granular flow increases gradually with the decrease in friction angle or increase in dilatancy angle of granular soil. However, the increase of gravity accelerates granular flow but showing the same final deposit profile without any dependence on gravity. The mobility of granular flow increases gradually by lowering the indexes of the apparent and repose coefficients of friction of granular flow while changing the surroundings, in turn, the dry soil, submerged soil and saturated soil, implying a gradually increased excessive mobility of granular flow with the friction weakening of granular soil. Presence of water in granular flow may be a potential catalyzer to yield a long run - out granular flow, as revealed in comparison of water - absent and water - present granular flows. In addition, the dynamic erosion and entrainment of based soil induced by granular flow subjected to the complex geological settings, i.e., the aspect ratio, granular mass, gravity, friction and dilatancy resistance, and presence of water, were comprehensively investigated as well.
The effects of interparticle cohesion on the collapse of granular columns

Abstract:The presence of interparticle cohesion can drastically change the behavior of granular materials. For instance, powders are challenging to handle, and one can make a sandcastle using wet grains. In this study, we report experimental results for columns of model cohesive grains collapsing under their own weight in air and spreading on a rough horizontal surface. The effects of two different sources of interparticle cohesion on two collapse geometries are compared and rationalized in a common framework. Grains are made cohesive by adding a small amount of water, such that they are in the pendular state, or by applying a polymer coating. The effects of cohesion are reported for a cylindrical column that spreads unconfined axisymmetrically and a confined rectangular column that flows in a single direction. A dimensionless number, comparing macroscopic cohesive strength to particle weight, is shown to capture the effects of cohesion on the final morphology. To this end, a characterization of the cohesive strength of the granular materials is obtained, independent of the physical source of cohesion at the particle scale. Such a framework allows for a common description of cohesive granular materials with different sources of cohesion.

Abstract:The collapse of wet granular columns in the pendular state is experimentally investigated, where the effects of the initial aspect ratio, the water content, and the particle size on the dynamics and the deposit of collapsing material are mainly considered. Three typical regimes are observed in our experiments, and a phase diagram is then proposed for describing different flow states. Furthermore, the velocity field of collapsing material exhibits distinct evolving features in two collapse regimes, and the transition between different regimes is also discussed, where the capillary effect plays different roles. On this basis, the influence of the water content on the flow duration and the final deposit morphology of collapsing material are further analyzed. Finally, a simplified theoretical model is put forward, which has been proved to be able to describe the dependence of the runout distance on the particle diameter in the collapse of wet granular material.

Abstract:The collapse of granular material in fluids is a prevalent phenomenon in both natural and industrial processes, displaying a notable sensitivity to initial configuration of the system. This study is specifically oriented towards falling process of collapsing material under various fluid conditions, employing the computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM) to primarily investigate the dynamics and scaling laws of deposit morphology of collapsed material. Through a comprehensive analysis of particle sedimentation in fluids, we introduce a refined inertial characteristic time for granular collapse within the inertial regime. Subsequently, we propose modifications to conventional fluid-particle density ratio and Reynolds number, aiming to enhance the accuracy of depicting collapse dynamics and identifying flow regimes across diverse column heights and fluid conditions. Finally, we construct a phase diagram of flow regimes using modified dimensionless numbers, emphasizing the role of column height in transition between viscous and inertial regimes. These parameters demonstrate enhanced relevance in governing the collapse of immersed granular columns, thereby contributing to a more nuanced understanding of fluid-particle interations in dense granular flows under different regimes.

Abstract:We investigate the submerged collapse of weakly polydisperse, loosely packed cohesive granular columns, as a function of aspect ratio and cohesive force strength, via grain-resolving direct numerical simulations. The cohesive forces act to prevent the detachment of individual particles from the main body of the collapsing column, reduce its front velocity, and yield a shorter and thicker final deposit. All of these effects can be captured accurately across a broad range of parameters by piecewise power-law relationships. The cohesive forces reduce significantly the amount of available potential energy released by the particles. For shallow columns, the particle and fluid kinetic energy decreases for stronger cohesion. For tall columns, on the other hand, moderate cohesive forces increase the maximum particle kinetic energy, since they accelerate the initial free-fall of the upper column section. Only for larger cohesive forces does the peak kinetic energy of the particles decrease. Computational particle tracking indicates that the cohesive forces reduce the mixing of particles within the collapsing column, and it identifies the regions of origin of those particles that travel the farthest. The simulations demonstrate that cohesion promotes aggregation and the formation of aggregates. Furthermore, they provide complete information on the temporally and spatially evolving network of cohesive and direct contact force bonds. While the normal contact forces are aligned primarily in the vertical direction, the cohesive bonds adjust their preferred spatial orientation throughout the collapse. They result in a net macroscopic stress that counteracts deformation and slows the spreading of the advancing particle front.

Abstract:An experimental study of partially submerged bidisperse granular column collapse on a flat bed is conducted in this paper. The effect of the particle size and particle composition, as well as the interstitial water on the collapsing process are investigated. A total number of 55 experimental cases are observed by varying the particle size, the finer-particle fraction, and the saturation level, i.e., the ratio of the initial height of the interstitial water level to the total height of the initial column. It is shown that the mobility of partially submerged bidisperse columns increases as the particle size difference increases, while decreases as the finer-particle fraction increases. Effect of the interstitial water on the collapsing process is somewhat complicated. It retards the granular flow at the acceleration stage of the collapse but enhances the granular flow at the deceleration stage in an overall sense. The final run-out of a partially submerged bidisperse column depends not only on the saturation level, but also on the size of the finer particles in addition to the finer-particle fraction. The particle segregation observed during collapse, however, is less affected by the saturation level.

Abstract:The continuous granular flow under gravity extensively exists in chemical processes, and the dynamic behaviors of granular flow under different gas-liquid environments are investigated by synchronous slide-type high-speed photography. Results show that a hexagonal arrangement is observed after three-stage densification in wet granular flow, while these structures are almost absent in the dry system. A Coupled CFD-DEM Simulation of Immersed Granular Collapse

Abstract:Natural disasters normally involve the flow of polydispersed granular materials with interstitial fluid which may change the flow dramatically. Here we focus on a typical small-scale case of fluid–particle mixture flows, i.e., the immersed granular collapse using computational fluid dynamics coupled with discrete element method (CFD-DEM). The simulation parameters are calibrated with laboratory experiments and the immersed granular collapse process is reproduced in terms of different aspect ratios. We present a deeper investigation of the collapse based on simulation results. The granular front evolves in three stages, i.e., acceleration, steady propagation, and deceleration. We found that the constant propagation stage is maintained by the transition of particles’ motion from vertical to horizontal and the drag of the fluid. The constant propagation velocity is proportional to the free-fall velocity with a Stokes-number-dependent coefficient and the normalized final runout is linearly correlated with the densimetric Froude number. These conclusions may find its significance in geophysical applications.

Abstract:Laboratory experiments on the collapse of a liquid-saturated granular column on a horizontal plane are reported. The trigger and the resulting dynamics of the collapse when occurring, as well as the shape of the final deposit, are characterized and analyzed in light of some dimensionless parameters, namely, the “column” Bond number Bo, the grain diameter to capillary length ratio d/lc, the initial aspect ratio a, the Stokes number St, and the initial volume fraction ϕ, by varying the properties of the interstitial fluid and of the grains, the geometry, and the compaction of the initial granular column. The main contribution of this study is to: (i) provide a diagram of the different regimes of collapse shown to be mostly controlled by capillary effect, (ii) develop simple criteria that capture the transitions between each regime in terms of critical values of the Bond number and the ratio of the grain diameter to the capillary length, (iii) extend a predictive model of the runout for dry collapses to the more general case of liquid-saturated granular collapses, and (iv) quantify the influence of a, St, and ϕ on the collapse dynamics and the shape of the final deposit in the capillary-free regime. A perspective description of the role of the interstitial fluid on the spreading of the granular medium, and more particularly of the driving role of the fluid, is discussed and argued on the basis of the present set of experiments.

Abstract:We investigate the collapse of submerged cohesive granular columns as a function of their packing density and the cohesive force strength, via grain-resolving direct numerical simulations. The cohesive force acts to reduce the final runout distance of the collapsing columns. In addition, it significantly accelerates the initial contraction for loosely packed columns and decelerates the dilation for densely packed columns, leading to a larger or smaller excess pore pressure, respectively. Early on, the collapsing column exhibits distinct planar failure surfaces, whose angle with the horizontal increases with the packing density. We employ a network science-based approach to analyze the cohesive and contact force chains. Pronounced force-chain network structures form preferentially in the failure region. They tend to be larger for higher packing density, which induces a larger macroscopic cohesive resistance. Abstract:The collapse of wet granular columns with high- and low-viscosity interstitial liquid is investigated through experiments and numerical simulations. By incorporating both capillary and viscous force models of interstitial liquid in the Discrete Element Method (DEM), simulations have been conducted and reproduced consistent collapse processes with the experiment. The influence of water content, contact angle, particle diameter, liquid surface tension, and viscosity is explored over a large parameter space using DEM. For wet granular columns with low-viscosity interstitial liquid of water, the final profile of the collapsed column can be predicted by Bond number (Bo), Bo ), a ratio of particle gravity to capillary force. For wet granular columns where the inertial effect dominates and both capillary and viscous forces are significant, dimensional analysis is employed to characterize the collapse, indicating that the collapsed profile can be predicted by Bo and Galileo number (Ga). Ga ). Using water and silicone oils with different viscosities as interstitial liquids, simulations show that the collapsed profile depends on Bo with a low capillary number (Ca Ca 10-3),-3 ), Bo and Ga when Ca is intermediate (Ca Ca 10-- 1 ). When Ca is high (Ca Ca > 100), 0 ), the final profile is solely controlled by Bo and a rolling-collapsed regime is observed.
Effects of interstitial water on collapses of partially immersed granular columns

Abstract:The effects of interstitial water on the collapse of partially immersed granular columns are experimentally and numerically investigated. Experiments on the collapsing process of partially immersed granular columns over a horizontal bed are conducted in which the saturation level of the columns, (H) over tilde, is defined by the ratio of the initial interstitial water level height to the total height of the column. It is shown that the interstitial water generally speeds up the collapse if the column consists of coarse-grains but slows down the motion if the column consists of fine-particles. The final run-out of a coarse-grain column increases as the saturation level increases, while that of a fine-particle column first decreases as the saturation level increases until (H) over tilde = 0.75 and then increases to a value still smaller than the final run-out in the relevant dry case. In the experiments, the drag force between the water and the particle phases seems to always accelerate the collapse of partially immersed columns. It is speculated that there is an additional inter-particle viscosity in the water-particle mixtures, which retards the collapsing processes and dominates over the drag force in fine-grain cases. In the present study, a particle-fluid two-phase model is then adopted to describe the collapsing dynamics of partially immersed granular columns in which the water-air interface in the granular mass is captured and the primary flow variables of both particle and water phases are resolved. The model is validated by the experimental results. The roles of the drag force and the pressure gradient force exerted on the particles by the interstitial water are then clarified. It is shown that the interphase drag and the pressure gradient force drive both coarse- and fine-grain columns to collapse, and their effects increase with an increase in the saturation level of the column. The significance of the additional inter-particle viscosity induced by the interstitial water is also discussed. Published under an exclusive license by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:A two-fluid Eulerian–Lagrangian coupled model is developed to investigate the complex interactions between solid particles and the ambient water during the process of submerged granular column collapse. In this model, the water phase is considered to be a Newtonian fluid, whereas the granular column is modeled as an elastic–perfectly plastic material. The water flow field is calculated by the mesh-based Eulerian Finite Volume Method (FVM), with the free surface captured by the Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) technique. The large deformation of the granular material is simulated by the mesh-free, particle-based Lagrangian Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method (SPH). Information transfer between Eulerian nodes and Lagrangian particles is performed by the aid of the SPH interpolation function. Both dry and submerged granular column collapses are simulated with the proposed model. Experiments of the submerged cases are also conducted for comparison. Effects of dilatancy (compaction) of initially dense (loose) packing granular columns on the mixture dynamics are investigated to reveal the mechanisms of different flow regimes. Pore water pressure field and granular velocity field are in good agreement between our numerical results and experimental observations, which demonstrates the capability of the proposed Eulerian–Lagrangian coupled method in dealing with complex submerged water–granular mixture flows.

Abstract:Mixed fluid–particle flows are commonly found in nature and exhibit complex particle–particle and particle–fluid interactions. In this paper, a typical small-scale case of immersed granular collapse under the viscous regime is numerically investigated using computational fluid dynamics coupled with the discrete element method (CFD-DEM), which provide particle-scale information of the collapse. The input parameters for the coupled CFD-DEM model are carefully calibrated from experimental results, and the simulation results achieve good agreement with the experiments in terms of the front evolution and final deposition. The collapse processes for different aspect ratios exhibit similarities and propagate in a three-stage mode that includes acceleration, steady propagation, and deceleration. The propagation velocity, runout distance, and the energy evolution of both fluid and particles are presented. The final runout is linearly proportional to the densimetric Froude number in our high-column cases. The transition of particles’ motion from vertical to horizontal and the drag of the fluid are found to be responsible for the constant velocity in the steady propagation stage. We also show that a small energy bump during the initial stage is the result of particle destabilization and rearrangement.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental investigation of immersed granular collapse with an initially dense packing, mainly focusing on the collapse characteristics of different flow regimes and the influence of the initial aspect ratio. A novel experimental setup and imaging method are introduced to simultaneously observe the motion of the particles and the fluid. The collapse dynamics, including the collapse acceleration, steady propagation velocity, and collapse duration, are analyzed based on the front propagation. It is found that the collapse procedures in the inertial and viscous regimes differ significantly, with the transitional regime possessing some unique characteristics of both. The inertial regime exhibits a faster collapse process, sharper final deposition, and a depression near the right wall in the case of high columns. The viscous regime collapses from the upper-left corner, from where particles drop to the bottom and form the flow front in advance of the particles initially at the bottom, and exhibits a triangular final deposition. The inertial regime exhibits swirling fluid motion, which helps the granular transport, whereas the fluid flow in the viscous regime mainly follows the granular flow. The collapse regime characteristics are more pronounced in higher columns.

Collapse characteristics of binary granular columns considering inhomogeneous particle size distributions

Abstract:Abstract Debris avalanches and dry granular flows exhibit similar characteristics. In order to comprehend the fundamental mechanisms and improve the accuracy in predicting disasters such as landslides, debris flows, and rock avalanches, the collapse characteristics of a binary granular column are investigated through a three‐dimensional discrete element model. A novel approach is proposed by incorporating the concept of local granular velocity fluctuation and applying a cluster analysis method. Then, the flow mechanism of the binary granular column is analyzed, by considering the inhomogeneous particle size distribution. The research results show that: (1) The normalized final packing height of the granular column gradually increases when the content of coarse particles exceeds 20% and when the coarse‐fine particle size ratio increases. Conversely, the normalized run‐out distance of the granular column decreases gradually with the increase in coarse particle content and the coarse‐fine particle size ratio. (2) The particles with higher granular velocity fluctuations tend to move together and form clusters, demonstrating dynamical heterogeneity. As the coarse particle content and coarse‐fine particle size ratio increase, there is a greater tendency for particles to assemble into larger‐scale active clusters. This means that a larger number of particles exhibit collective behavior during the collapse process, resulting in increased resistance to shear deformation. Ultimately, this leads to a greater packing height and a reduced run‐out distance when observed from a macroscopic perspective.

Abstract:Dry granular materials have been the subject of many investigations, while wet granular materials, which widely exist in many real-world applications, have only received limited attention. The aim of this paper is to address the missing gap in continuum modeling of wet granular materials. To study the wet granular flows, a grain-scale capillary interaction is introduced, as additional cohesive stress in the continuum-scale framework. We coupled the viscoplastic constitutive law for dry granular material and cohesion model for wet isotropic granular material to capture the behavior of wet granular materials. This combined model is implemented in a smooth particle hydrodynamics framework because the meshfree nature of this method captures the large deformation of granular flows without local grid distortion. The Wendland kernel is used as the interpolation kernel to improve numerical stability. This framework is validated by comparing numerical results with recent experimental findings for both dry and wet cases. The comparisons are illustrative of the potential of the framework to capture the behavior of granular materials across different phases. For different levels of friction and water content, the run-out dynamics and shear strength properties of granular materials in the final quasi-static regime are investigated. For granular flows on flat surfaces, compared with dry granular materials, with the introduction of surface tension in wet granular materials, it is found that there are increases in shear stresses locally and globally, enabling stronger internal forces to support structures with larger angles of repose. The surface energy-induced cohesion is found to play an important role in low friction cases compared to high friction cases. To benchmark the numerical framework presented here, granular column collapses on curved surfaces are also investigated. For flows on curved surfaces, although there are also increases in internal shear stresses, the differences in final profiles between wet granular materials and dry granular materials are not as pronounced as that on flat surfaces due to geometric constraints. The findings of this work are demonstrative of the capabilities of the smooth particle hydrodynamics method for the study of wet granular materials. This effort can serve as a step forward in the quest for a unified continuum theory and computational framework of granular material dynamics.
