Abstract:Combining the flexibility and ease of use of paper and pencil with the processing power of the computer, computer aided sketching design(CASD) technology specially suits for conceptual design and can help designer write down design ideas rapidly. For many years it has been one of the key issues on which many specialists and scholars have research. Based on application domains of sketching technology, the present situation of CASD is introduced. From four aspects of CASD, that is user interface design, low level sketch process, high level sketch interpretation, 3D sketching modeling, research method of some key technologies of CASD are analyzed. The development tendency of CASD is predicted.

Abstract:This paper discussed the definition and connotation of the conceptual design of mechanical products. It analyzed the relation between the needs of market and the functions of products. It studied the method of concept design of mechanical products based on the technological action process, and the method of establishment of domain knowledge based on the basic characteristic of action. It inquired into the practical method of creative concept design of mechanical products. It also studied the method and key technology of computer aided conceptual design for mechanical products, and put forward the conclusion that the conceptual design for mechanical products should establish the function design model and mechanical movement scheme based on the basic characteristics of mechanism system.

Abstract:The conceptual design has significant influence on the whole product life cycle. The conceptual design objects and process have characteristics distinctly different from those of detailed design. But conventional CAD systems are incapable of supporting the conceptual design. In this paper, taking the die structure design as the research object, a computer aided conceptual die design system is developed based the representation formalism of logic components. The representation of logic die components and logic die assembly model is presented, and the computer aided conceptual die design system is an effective tool which can support conceptual die design.

Abstract:Early in the design process, designers attempt to explore in the wide design space to generate a number of feasible solutions and decide the best concept scheme with a high degree of uncertainty according to customer demands. A strategy that can assist designers in exploring and ascertaining design solutions within this vast space is therefore crucial. However, existing product design tools mainly focus on the detailed design phase and due to lack of effective design tools, it is often difficult for human designers to explore in wide multi-disciplinary solution spaces. Therefore, this paper proposes a cognitive process-based approach for assisting designers achieving intelligent conceptual design. By analyzing designers' thinking characteristics, a design meta-thinking model is defined and a simulation model which is composed of divergent thinking and convergent thinking is put forward. Case-based reasoning and genetic algorithm are applied to stimulate divergent thinking to associate and produce feasible concept solutions. Furthermore, multiple-attribute decision-making method based on intuitionistic fuzzy number is employed to stimulate convergent thinking to obtain the best solution from generated conceptual candidate solutions. Finally, a case study is implemented on a turbo-expander. The result of this example demonstrates that the proposed approach can provide an intelligent manner to perform conceptual design. Meanwhile, a computer-aided design prototype system is developed based on this framework.

Abstract:With rapid development of computer technique and network technique recently, web-based cooperative design meets cooperating need and becomes an essential tool for web cooperating. It will solve the chock point problems in conceptual design. At the same time web-based cooperative design will make it possible to develop latent resources. Abstract:Conceptual design plays an important role in product life cycle, which requires engineers to use sound design theory, cross-disciplinary knowledge, and complex technical support to acquire design concepts. However, the lack of sufficient computational tools makes it difficult for designers to fully explore in the wide design solution spaces. Therefore, this paper proposes an integrated cognitive computing approach to formalize the cognitive activities of conceptual design. A cognitive computing model composed of concept associative memory, concept generation, and decision-making process is established based on the integration of cognitive psychology and engineering design. First of all, the Hopfield neural network is used to acquire similar concept solutions for specific subfunctions from a knowledge base. Then, morphological matrix and genetic algorithm are introduced to produce a set of feasible candidate solutions in the concept generation process. Furthermore, a technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution is applied to evaluate the generated concept solutions and obtain the optimal solution automatically. Finally, a case study is given to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Abstract Conceptual design is a pivotal phase of product design and development, encompassing user requirement exploration and informed solution generation. Recent generative models with their powerful content generation capabilities have been applied to conceptual design to support designers' ideation. However, the lack of transparency in their generation process and the shallow nature of their generated solutions constrain their performance in complex conceptual design tasks. In this study, we first introduce a conceptual design generation approach that combines generative models with classic design theory. This approach decomposes the conceptual design task based on design process and design attributes, and uses the Who, What, Where, When, Why, How (5W1H) method, Function-Behavior-Structure (FBS) model, and Kansei Engineering to guide generative models to generate conceptual design solutions through multi-step reasoning. Then we present an interactive system using a mind-map layout to visualize multi-step reasoning, called DesignFusion. This empowers designers to track the generation process and control inputs/outputs at each reasoning step. Two user studies show that our approach significantly enhances the quality of generated design solutions and enriches designer experience in human-AI co-creation.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem existing in the computer aided design process that how to express the design intents with high-level engineering terminologies,a mechanical product self-organized semantic feature evolution technology for axiomatic design is proposed, so that the constraint relations between mechanical parts could be expressed in a semantic form which is more suitable for designers.By describing the evolution rules for semantic constraint information,the abstract expression of design semantics in mechanical product evolution process is realized and the constraint relations between parts are mapped to the geometric level from the semantic level;With semantic feature relation graph,the abstract semantic description,the semantic relative structure and the semantic constraint information are linked together;And the methods of semantic feature self-organized evolution are classified.Finally,combining a design example of domestic high-speed elevator,how to apply the theory to practical product development is illustrated and this method and its validity is described and verified.According to the study results,the designers are able to represent the design intents at an edvanced semantic level in a more intuitional and natural way and the automation,recursion and visualization for mechanical product axiomatic design are also realized.

Abstract:Innovative product design is essentially an activity involving creative cognitive thinking. Therefore, research on the innovative design process and of methods, computer-aided innovation tools should be conducted based on systematic exploration based on the principles of innovative cognitive thinking. We aim to uncover some general principles that can serve as a systematic thinking framework for product designers, provide a feasible framework and method of innovative thinking for designers, and provide theoretical and methodological support for further development of computer-aided innovation platforms. This paper summarizes the sources and content of studies on the idea generation and design processes behind product innovation. Specifically, we break down the general innovative design process of products, outlining the cognitive mechanisms and propose an integrated application strategy that incorporates multiple methods. And taking “the solution program to the coking of oily sludge pyrolysis equipment” as an example, this paper demonstrated and verified the effectiveness and practicability of the method and strategy proposed. Based on the results on improvements in the equipment, the designers put forward some creative and implementable design schemes. The entire thinking process was relatively smooth and efficient. The example presented in this paper shows that the proposed method can effectively guide/assist/motivate designers to think creatively.

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering in China

Abstract:Conceptual design is the most critical and creative phase of design. Recently, increasing attention has been directed to supporting conceptual-level computer aided creative design and its theories and methodologies. Specifically, for conceptual design of mechanical products, this paper presents a novel function solving model for mechanical product design and highlights the importance of systematic synthesis to achieve creative design. Then it builds a framework as a function-effect-process-action-mechanisms (FEPAM) mapping process, which enables creative design on the basis of conceiving different action schemes. After that, several key points are elaborated including 1) representing and decomposition methods of functions and motion behaviors; 2) action scheme representing method based on network plan techniques; and 3) variation and creation methods based on action scheme transformations.

Abstract:Conceptual design is important in that it determines the creativity of products, which is key to the competition of the product market and the function and cost of product are mainly determined in this phase. At the same time it is complex in that it involves the consideration of many different fields in the whole design process. Studying some computer supported cooperative techniques to support effective conceptual design activity is absolutely necessary. This paper presents the models and tools of computer supported cooperative conceptual design (CSCCD) which includes an auto‐resolving model, a human‐human interaction model, automatic cooperation tools and interactive cooperation tools. Experiments have been carried out in the conceptual design of a motorcycle to put the above theories into application.

Abstract:Currently, designers often pay little attention to integrated innovation during the design process of products. In addition, the product assistance design systems mainly focus on the detailed design phrase and the construction function of mathematics models are often been neglected. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes a conceptual design process model to aid multi-stage innovation of product design based on the integration of the essential rules of the Axiomatic Design (AD) model, Function-Behaviour-Structure (FBS) model, and the guideline of functional creative thinking logics. By utilising the function tree and functional structure tree as the mediums to express the design information and by applying the conflict solving strategies of Extensic theory, the conceptual design process is defined as an integrated system with five stages and four mappings. The integrated logical processes of this model are described with mathematical language. Thus, the whole transformation from design experiences to design principles and to mathematical model finally to aided design system is realized perfectly in the proposed process model. The meaningful exploration on the nature and practical processes of product conceptual design is carried out in this research.

Abstract:Design is a high-level and complex thinking activity of human beings, using existing knowledge and technology to solve problems and create new things. With the rise and development of intelligent manufacturing, design has increasingly reflected its importance in the product life cycle. Firstly, the concept and connotation of complex product design is expounded systematically, and the different types of design are discussed. The four schools of design theory are introduced, including universal design, axiomatic design, TRIZ and general design. Then the research status of complex product design is analyzed, such as innovative design, digital design, modular design, reliability optimization design, etc. Finally, three key scientific issues worthy of research in the future are indicated, and five research trends of “newer, better, smarter, faster, and greener” are summarized, aiming to provide references for the equipment design and manufacturing industry.

Abstract:The research of mechanical product conceptual design is a hot topic in modern design theory.Its core is function-structure mapping,which aims to solve the combination of principle structures satisfying the design constraints according to the functional requirements and using behavior effect as the intermediate carrier.Based on the function-structure mapping theory and the neural mechanism of the designer's brain cognitive process,a brain-like behavior effect-inspiring and principle structure-combining method is proposed.The memory inspiration mechanism of the frontal lobe-hippocampus neural circuit is revealed.Then a memory-inspired reinforcement learning model for behavior effect refactoring is constructed.The dopamine-regulated Q learning is utilized to realize the process of behavioral effects restructuring and cognitive transmission.Moreover,the reflex regulation mechanism of the modularized cerebellum is revealed,and a constraint satisfaction neural network is constructed based on fully connected multilayer perceptron and recurrent neural networks.This can form the operant conditioning under complex design constraints to judge the constraint solvability,and then provide combinatorial solutions for principle structures.A case study is conducted to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:Abstract The IFBMDA is an Information-Flow-Based model for Mechanical Design Automation. This paper first analyzes the mechanical design process from the views of design methodology and cognitive model. Then, two essential assumptions about mechanical design behavior are provided. Based on the analysis and fundamental assumptions, this paper thoroughly describes five submodels which constitute the automation model IFBMDA. They are Information Flow model, Knowledge Processing model, Non-monotonic Expansion Search model, Iterative Constraint Generation and Solution model and Design Process Stage model. Then, this paper also evaluates the model in both practical and theoretical aspects and shows that it is well-developed in both aspects. Finally, the perspective of further mechanical design automation research is outlined.

Abstract:Mechanical product design includes four main steps: design requirement specification, conceptual design, embodiment design and detail design etc. Conceptual design, which is a key stage and the most important step in mechanical product design, is an iterative, complex, creative and decision-making process. Conceptual design includes following steps: concept conceiving, concept generation, concept analysis, dimensional design, concept evaluation and concept selection. A case-based similar design method is proposed for design concept generation in this paper. At first design requirement model and concept case model are established. Design requirement model is a tree-like data structure with three branches: usage branch, function branch and design restrict branch whose leaves denoting design requirement items. Concept case model is a tree-like data structure with four branches: usage branch, function branch, character branch and structure branch. Concept cases are put into a concept case base. Conceptual design compares design requirement with each concept case in the concept case base. Comparing result is measured by similar degree. Finally concept case is selected according to concept cases sorting result by similar degree. The key problems are discussed such as similar item generation, similar degree calculation and etc.

Abstract:Product customization has been recognized as an effective means to implement mass customization. The axiomatic principles of product function-structural model are proposed for diverse design domain levels of axiomatic design. The process of product configuration is categorized into first class of product module quasi configuration and second class of accessory structure similar configuration. In the condition of the parts configuration restriction, according to the product structure levels, the different configuration unit combination instance is selected. The isomeric knowledge description method based on XML and semantic rules is given, and the isomeric knowledge transformation technology based on ontology is described. Based on that, the CAD/PDM integrated platform which supports multi-domain knowledge application is put forward. Furthermore, the product axiomatic design and configuration integration method has been successfully applied in the design of some projects and achieves positive responses in its utility, flexibility and robustness
