Abstract:This chapter provides the main lines of recent important theoretical developments on the magnetism of ultrathin films with an emphasis on our own full-potential linearized augmented plane wave calculations. It is possible to synthesize and study thin films with either stable or metastable phases, and this has dramatically and importantly increased the range of materials that are magnetic and, hence, the challenges for understanding magnetism low-dimensional systems. It is known that ab initio numerical energy band methods based on local spin density functional theory have played very important role in the development of lower-dimensional magnetism. Because the 4d wave function is more spatially extended compared to the 3d’s, its magnetic properties are expected to be more sensitive to any small change of the environment. The spin-polarized metastable atom de-excitation spectroscopy can quantitatively measure the spin polarization in the surface-vacuum region with a higher precision, which thus opens a direct way to verify theoretically predicted surface magnetic moment enhancements.
