Abstract:Two interesting results are obtained from CASS national household surveys of 1988 and 1995. First, there was a tendency for intra-provincial inequality in both earnings per worker and household income per capita not only to rise in each province but also to converge across provinces. Second, there was a tendency for both province mean earnings per worker and household mean incomes per capita not only to rise in each province but also to diverge across provinces. Abstract:The paper investigates income inequality in urban China by using 2002—2007 UHS datasets.It finds that:(1) The Gini coefficient rose first and then fell,and it's 0.342,0.361 and 0.349 for 2002,2004 and 2007 separately.(2) The effects of real estate market and finance market on enlarging income inequality are increasingly stronger.Income from wealth has become the third important factor affecting income inequality,whose effects are just inferior to those of wage income and net public transfer income,and its contribution rate has arrived at 7.3% in 2007.(3) Real estate investments can enlarge income inequality more greatly than finance investments because of the higher investment threshold and the lasting rise of house prices.

Abstract:Rising inequality and spatial concentration in China have drawn considerable scholarly interest and social concern. However, sources of spatial inequality in China remain under-studied. This article analyzes spatial patterns and dynamics of urban land expansion in China to better understand the role of institutions and urbanization in spatial inequality. We find that urban land expansion in China is highly uneven at both intra-provincial and intra-prefectural levels, and inequalities are much higher in the Western region than the Eastern region. We also find that provincial-level development policies tend to increase urban land expansion and economic development gaps across prefectures, while urban land expansion tends to converge within prefectures. Such core-periphery growth patterns have intensified economic gaps across prefectures and provinces in China. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In the late 1970s China embarked upon a period of wide-ranging reforms, amongst which the Economic Reforms and the Open Door Policy can be counted. This article is to investigate ensuing patterns and trends in the interCity per-capita income distribution in China in the 1990s, after the reforms had been in place for a decade. The following methodologies are used: inequality and polarization indices, to illustrate basic trends, stochastic dominance techniques, to provide unambiguous economic welfare and poverty comparisons across regions and over time, and transition probability techniques and polarization/ convergence tests, to study the long-run evolution of income distributions for Cities. The results suggest a significant welfare improvement and concomitant reduction in the poor status of Cities for all regions, with strict welfare dominance of the Eastern Coastal Area over the interior. They also indicate a significant convergence trend in the center (especially in the Eastern Coastal Area) together with a divergence trend in both lower and upper tails of interCity income distributions. Economic reform and globalization effects in the coastal area have driven convergence in the central mass; divergence in both tails of the distribution stems from the growing coastal-inland gap due to the unbalanced pace of the economic reform and globalization.

Abstract:Using the nationally representative Urban Household Income and Expenditure Survey (UHIES) conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) of China, we document a steadily rising trend in income and consumption inequality during the period from 1992 to 2003 in urban China. Despite the rising urban inequality over time, the social welfare of urban residents unambiguously improved because every income group saw their income and consumption increase over this period (higher income groups experienced faster increases). Moreover, consumption inequality follows income inequality very closely. Labor income inequality accounts for about two‐thirds of total income inequality quite consistently over time. We find that only about one‐third of urban inequality can be attributed to observable individual choices and characteristics, of which education has increasing explanatory power, while regional differences become less important over time. We also find that restructuring of the SOE sector, urbanization, and globalization are important contributing factors to rising overall urban inequality and the within‐group inequality not accounted for by observable individual choices and characteristics.

Abstract:This paper develops a unified empirical framework for describing the relative contribution of rural–urban and inland–coastal inequality to overall regional inequality in China during the 1980's and 1990's. The framework assesses rural–urban and inland–coastal inequalities from the same data set, presents results for a sufficiently long time period to transcend short-term fluctuations, allows for differential price changes, and applies a consistent notion of the contribution to inequality using a decomposition analysis. While the contribution of rural–urban inequality is much higher than that of inland–coastal inequality in terms of levels, the trend is very different. The rural–urban contribution has not changed very much over time, but the inland–coastal contribution has increased by several fold. Our analysis improves on past estimates by using a fuller measure of income, adjusting for spatial price differences and including migrants. Our methods include inequality decomposition by population subgroup and the Oaxaca–Blinder decomposition. Several key findings emerge. First, the adjustments substantially reduce China's urban–rural income gap and its contribution to inequality. Nevertheless, the gap remains large and has increased somewhat over time. Second, after controlling for household characteristics, location of residence remains the most important factor underlying the urban–rural income gap. The only household characteristic that contributes substantially to the gap is education. Differences in the endowments of, and returns to, other household characteristics such as family size and composition, landholdings, and Communist Party membership are relatively unimportant.

Abstract:This paper investigates regional inequality in a multi-scale framework, using Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis, based on the per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of counties and municipalities within the Zhejiang province in China between the years of 1990 and 2010. A Spatial Markov Chain is used to identify the dynamics of regional wealth disparity in Zhejiang. The results show that the regional inequality of Zhejiang is sensitive to the geographic scale of the analysis. In addition, the inter-county inequality shows an inverted-U shape pattern. At the same time, the inter-municipality inequality displays a more consistently upward trend, and the evolution of the interregional inequality is relatively stable over time. The regional inequality is more significant at finer (larger) spatial scales. The decomposition of the Theil Index shows that the contribution of the inequalities between Northeast Zhejiang and Southwest Zhejiang increased. The increasingly larger values of the Global Moran’s I show that there is an intensifying spatial aggregation of economic development. The comparison of the traditional Markov transition matrix and the Spatial Markov transition matrix illustrates how the relative wealth or poverty of neighboring counties make a significance difference in wealth in a given county as measured using domestic GDP per capita in Zhejiang province. This space-time analysis is valuable for policy making towards sustainable economic development in China given the soaring spatial inequality.

Abstract:In this chapter we examine trends in Chinaâ€™s household incomes, income distribution and inequality for China as a whole and for each of the urban, rural and rural-urban migrant subgroups, as well as analyzing changes in the income gaps between the urban and rural sectors and among the Eastern/Central/Western regions using the CHIP 2007 and 2013 data. Our base estimates show a decline in national inequality from 2007 to 2013. This decline is robust to alternative income definitions and different inequality indexes. The decline reflects reductions in important dimensions of inequality including the rural-urban income gap, regional income gaps, and inequality in the distribution of the major components of household income, e.g. wage earnings, asset income, etc. The decline in national inequality would have been even larger if not for rising inequality within the urban and rural sectors and the growing importance of unequally distributed income components, such as income from assets and imputed rents on owner-occupied housing. Moreover, the decline in national inequality is not robust to adjustments to correct for spatial differences in the cost of living and for under-representation of top-income groups in the survey sample. These adjustments reveal that some, if not all, of the apparent reduction in inequality from 2007 to 2013 is due to changes in prices and the growing importance of top-income individuals and their incomes that are not captured in the household surveys. The chapter contains further, detailed analyses of changes in incomes and income distribution within each of the urban, rural and migrant population subgroups.

Abstract:Using household data from samples covering 18 provinces in 1988 and 1995, income inequality within and between counties in rural China is assessed. The approach enables us to aggregate average income and income inequality to the levels of provinces and the three regions comprising eastern, central and western China. Most of income inequality in rural China in 1995 was found to be spatial and the uneven development of mean income across counties stood for most, but not all, of the rapid increase in income inequality. Mean income of the three regions diverged most forcefully.

Within-Group Wage Inequality and Its Evolution in Urban China

Abstract:We use three urban household surveys for 1995,2002,and 2007 to investigate the trend of residual inequality and its determinants.Using two complementary semi-parametric methods,we find that the change in skill prices play a dominant role in the rise of residual inequality.We use a fixed effects model at the city level and find that ownership restructuring is an important factor that drives up the skill price between 1995 and 2002.Another finding is that China's trade activity has a positive effect on residual inequality between 2002 and 2007,highlighting the impact of China's entry into WTO.

Abstract:This paper investigates the extent of disparities amongst the provinces of China since the economic reform in 1978 up to the most recent year for which data is available. After a brief review of theoretical and in particular recent empirical literature on regional inequality in China it investigates whether or not the dynamic economic growth in China has been coupled with increasing disparities amongst the Chinese provinces. The paper utilises a few models of convergence along the lines of those hypothesised by neoclassical economists. It employs per capita income and per capita consumption to identify the possible absolute and conditional convergence since the economic reforms. The coverage and impact of the disparities in terms of the relative size of population affected are then taken into account in the analysis of inequality in income and consumption.

Abstract:Using a representative household survey for 1995, 2002, 2007, and 2013, we show that education plays a pivotal role in shaping wage inequality in urban China. We find that education was a major contributor to increased wage inequality between 1995 and 2013. The returns to education remained high after 2007 despite a large inflow of college-educated workers. Although regional wage inequality declined from 2007–13, regional wage inequality among educated workers did not. Residual wage inequality increased, and the within inequality of educated workers increased faster than that of the less educated. We argue that China's education expansion seems insufficient to narrow the educational wage gap, and a lack of labor mobility for educated workers prevents the decline in returns to education in specific regions.

Abstract:This study examines changes in Chinese urban income distribution from 1987 to 1996 and 1996 to 2004 using nationwide household data and investigates the causes of these changes. The Firpo, Fortin, and Lemieux (2007, 2009) method based on unconditional quantile regressions is used to decompose changes in income distribution and income inequality measures, such as variance and a 10:90 ratio. The decomposition results show that wage structure effects, such as a widening gender earnings gap, increases in returns to college education, and increases in earnings differentials between industries, company ownership types, and regions, have been the major contributors to the overall increases in income inequality. It was also found that at different points on the income distribution (e.g., the lower or upper half), the contributing factors that increase income inequality are different.
