Abstract:Underwater sensing is envisioned using inexpensive underwater sensor nodes distributed over a wide area, deployed close to the bottom, and networked through underwater acoustic communications. In this paper, an underwater acoustic sensor node to perform the underwater sensing is designed and implemented. Specifically, we describe the design criteria, architecture and functional modules of underwater acoustic sensor node. Moreover, we give the experiment results of ocean current field estimation using the designed underwater acoustic sensor nodes at the sea area of Liuheng, Zhoushan, China.

Abstract:Underwater sensor nodes will find applications in oceanographic data collection, pollution monitoring, offshore exploration, disaster prevention, assisted navigation and tactical surveillance applications. Moreover, unmanned or autonomous underwater vehicles (UUVs, AUVs), equipped with sensors, will enable the exploration of natural undersea resources and gathering of scientific data in collaborative monitoring missions. Underwater acoustic networking is the enabling technology for these applications. Underwater networks consist of a variable number of sensors and vehicles that are deployed to perform collaborative monitoring tasks over a given area.In this paper, several fundamental key aspects of underwater acoustic communications are investigated. Different architectures for two-dimensional and three-dimensional underwater sensor networks are discussed, and the characteristics of the underwater channel are detailed. The main challenges for the development of efficient networking solutions posed by the underwater environment are detailed and a cross-layer approach to the integration of all communication functionalities is suggested. Furthermore, open research issues are discussed and possible solution approaches are outlined.

Abstract:Underwater acoustic sensing based on the Distributed Networked Underwater Sensors (DNUS) system is envisioned as an effective and energy-efficient approach for oceangraphic monitoring over large area. In this paper, we summarize the main challenges for the distributed underwater sensing based on the DNUS and the impact of the main parameters on the system performance. Based on the requirement of the local measurement exchange in existing distributed tomographic inversion algorithms, we proposed the new direction on integrating communication and signal processing for distributed underwater sensing.

Abstract:Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UASNs) become increasingly important in various underwater applications, including the real time monitoring of ocean environments, persistent undersea surveillance and disaster prevention etc. UASNs with Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) as mobile nodes have the potential to execute many tasks flexibly, such as the ocean dynamic observation. However, the mobility of UASNs introduces many challenges to the design of network protocols, as well as the acoustic connectivity changes over time due to the ocean environments. Compared to static networks, the temporal networks can reach controllability faster, demand orders of magnitude less control energy, providing a new theory of environmental adaptation for UASNs. Based on the study of network connectivity and statistics from a real sea experiment, we analyzed the dynamic process on time evolution of the network structure. The topology controllability on underwater temporal network is briefly discussed for future studies.

Abstract:The oceans cover 71% of the Earth's surface and represent one of the least explored frontiers; yet, the oceans are integral to climate regulation, nutrient production, oil retrieval, and transportation. Also, water systems in general are of vital importance to life on Earth and commerce. For these reasons, there is significant interest in monitoring aquatic environments for scientific, environmental, commercial, safety, and military purposes. WUWNet is the premier venue for research and development bringing real-time, in-situ sensing and actuation to this aquatic world. The goal of this conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners in areas relevant to underwater networks and systems.

Abstract:Underwater Acoustic Sensor Network（UASN） has attracted significant attention because of its great influence on ocean exploration and monitoring. On account of the unique characteristics of underwater environment, localization, as one of the fundamental tasks in UASNs, is a more challenging work than in terrestrial sensor networks. A survey of the ranging algorithms and the network architectures varied with different applications in UASNs is provided in this paper. Algorithms used to estimate the coordinates of the UASNs nodes are classified into two categories: rangebased and range-free. In addition, we analyze the architectures of UASNs based on different applications, and compare their performances from the aspects of communication cost, accuracy, coverage and so on. Open research issues which would affect the accuracy of localization are also discussed, including MAC protocols, sound speed and time synchronization.

Abstract:Underwater acoustic networks (UWANs) with autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) as mobile nodes have the potential to execute many tasks flexibly in the ocean, while the mobility of UWANs introduces many challenges to the design of network protocols. In this paper, a heterogeneous network with multiple routing protocols is investigated and implemented for the mobile UWANs. We conduct an experiment at Yellow Sea in Dalian, China for the UWANs with three AUVs to evaluate the acoustic network. The network performance is investigated in terms of packet delivery ratio (PDR) and network throughputs, which confirm the effectiveness of proposed network protocols.

Abstract:There is no escaping fact that a huge amount of unexploited resources lies underwater which covers almost 70% of the Earth. Yet, the aquatic world has mainly been unaffected by the recent advances in the area of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and their pervasive penetration in modern day research and industrial development. The current pace of research in the area of underwater sensor networks (UWSNs) is slow due to the difficulties arising in transferring the state-of-the-art WSNs to their underwater equivalent. Maximum underwater deployments rely on acoustics for enabling communication combined with special sensors having the capacity to take on harsh environment of the oceans. However, sensing and subsequent transmission tend to vary as per different subsea environments; for example, deep sea exploration requires altogether a different approach for communication as compared to shallow water communication. This paper particularly focuses on comprehensively gathering most recent developments in UWSN applications and their deployments. We have classified the underwater applications into five main classes, namely, monitoring, disaster, military, navigation, and sports, to cover the large spectrum of UWSN. The applications are further divided into relevant subclasses. We have also shown the challenges and opportunities faced by recent deployments of UWSN.

Abstract:With the extensive application of underwater acoustic sensor networks (UANs) in various fields such as commerce, marine environmental research, and national defense, the need for an autonomous and well-organized underwater acoustic network has been increasing. Topology discovery is a crucial step in constructing an underwater acoustic network, and node discovery and topology establishment are the essential components of the topology discovery process in UANs. This paper introduces the characteristics of underwater acoustic channels and networks and highlights their influences on topology discovery. We discuss the topology discovery protocol development in terrestrial networks (i.e., duty-cycle ad hoc network, Internet of things). The main focus of this paper is to study the topology discovery protocols of UANs. This paper also classifies and introduces the existing topology discovery protocols and compared their advantages and disadvantages to understand the current topology discovery methods. Furthermore, we also discuss the topology discovery protocol's influence on different layers' functions in the UAN protocol stack. Analyze the current research challenges in this field, followed by important open issues in UAN protocol development, which provide new opportunities for further research.

Abstract:The past decade has seen a growing interest in ocean sensor networks because of their wide applications in marine research, oceanography, ocean monitoring, offshore exploration, and defense or homeland security. Ocean sensor networks are generally formed with various ocean sensors, autonomous underwater vehicles, surface stations, and research vessels. To make ocean sensor network applications viable, efficient communication among all devices and components is crucial. Due to the unique characteristics of underwater acoustic channels and the complex deployment environment in three dimensional (3D) ocean spaces, new efficient and reliable communication and networking protocols are needed in design of ocean sensor networks. In this paper, we aim to provide an overview of the most recent advances in network design principles for 3D ocean sensor networks, with focuses on deployment, localization, topology design, and position-based routing in 3D ocean spaces.

Abstract:With the rapid development of society and the economy, an increasing number of human activities have gradually destroyed the marine environment. Marine environment monitoring is a vital problem and has increasingly attracted a great deal of research and development attention. During the past decade, various marine environment monitoring systems have been developed. The traditional marine environment monitoring system using an oceanographic research vessel is expensive and time-consuming and has a low resolution both in time and space. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have recently been considered as potentially promising alternatives for monitoring marine environments since they have a number of advantages such as unmanned operation, easy deployment, real-time monitoring, and relatively low cost. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art technologies in the field of marine environment monitoring using wireless sensor networks. It first describes application areas, a common architecture of WSN-based oceanographic monitoring systems, a general architecture of an oceanographic sensor node, sensing parameters and sensors, and wireless communication technologies. Then, it presents a detailed review of some related projects, systems, techniques, approaches and algorithms. It also discusses challenges and opportunities in the research, development, and deployment of wireless sensor networks for marine environment monitoring.

Abstract:As a significant component of ocean exploration, underwater localization has attracted extensive attention in both military and civil fields. Due to its low cost and convenience, underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) is favored by related fields. As an important part of the Internet of Things (IoT), it can strengthen the trinity of land, sea, and air. The location of the underwater sensor node is the foundation of the UWSN application and is one of the research hotspots today. Many relevant research scholars have optimized the localization algorithm or introduced new methods to better locate the target nodes, thus promoting the development of related fields. In this article, the challenges of underwater acoustic communication and underwater positioning, the comparison between UWSNs and terrestrial wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the network structure, routing technology, and localization evaluation criteria are all introduced in detail. Moreover, we survey many cutting-edge underwater localization algorithms based on a new taxonomy (i.e., distance measurement, network scale, and anchor utilization). Moreover, these localization algorithms are compared and analyzed from various aspects. Meanwhile, localization discussion and research prospects are illustrated in this article.

Abstract:Sensor technology has matured enough to be used in any type of environment. The appearance of new physical sensors has increased the range of environmental parameters for gathering data. Because of the huge amount of unexploited resources in the ocean environment, there is a need of new research in the field of sensors and sensor networks. This special issue is focused on collecting recent advances on underwater sensors and underwater sensor networks in order to measure, monitor, surveillance of and control of underwater environments. On the one hand, from the sensor node perspective, we will see works related with the deployment of physical sensors, development of sensor nodes and transceivers for sensor nodes, sensor measurement analysis and several issues such as layer 1 and 2 protocols for underwater communication and sensor localization and positioning systems. On the other hand, from the sensor network perspective, we will see several architectures and protocols for underwater environments and analysis concerning sensor network measurements. Both sides will provide us a complete view of last scientific advances in this research field.

Abstract:As the ocean development process speeds up, the technical means of ocean exploration are being upgraded. Due to the characteristics of seawater and the complex underwater environment, conventional measurement and sensing methods used for land are difficult to apply in the underwater environment directly. Especially for the seabed topography, it is impossible to carry out long-distance and accurate detection via electromagnetic waves. Therefore, various types of acoustic and even optical sensing devices for underwater applications have come into use. Equipped by submersibles, those underwater sensors can sense underwater wide-range and accurately. Moreover, the development of sensor technology will be modified and optimized according to the needs of ocean exploitation. This paper has made a summary of the ocean sensing technologies applied in some critical underwater scenarios, including geological surveys, navigation and communication, marine environmental parameters, and underwater inspections. In order to contain as many submersible-based sensors as possible, we have to make a trade-off on breadth and depth. In the end, the authors predict the development trend of underwater sensor technology based on the future ocean exploration requirements.

Abstract:Abstract Underwater acoustic communication technology is the core technology in the marine field, occupying a very important position, and has an important supporting role for underwater observation operations and military activities. Underwater acoustic technology is currently the most widely used and longest underwater wireless communication technology. With the increasing demand for development, the complexity of underwater acoustic channels, underwater environment and other factors make the communication speed, communication distance and communication stability of underwater acoustic communication greatly restricted. Despite these limitations, underwater acoustic communication is still valued by professionals from various countries and industries, and has been developed and applied to some extent. This article summarizes the basic content of underwater acoustic communication technology, leads to its general structure as a communication system, the current development of underwater acoustic communication technology, and the characteristics of underwater acoustic communication systems due to the characteristics of underwater acoustic channels. This article summarizes the development and some applications of the underwater acoustic communication system and the full text and some prospects for the future underwater acoustic communication.

Abstract:The archipelagic environment is an important feature of island distribution. The archipelago environment, an important feature of island distribution, allows for more wireless communication nodes to be deployed, which helps achieve large-scale network coverage at sea. This provides communication convenience for real-time and 3-dimensional oceanographic observations. On the other hand, air-sea-ground networking should overcome the complex communication conditions brought by the archipelago and shallow water. In this article, we propose an air-sea-ground integrated observation system based on ad hoc network. It combines underwater acoustic communications and LoRa communications to construct an air-sea-ground transmission system. The core equipment of this system includes the scientific instrument interface module (SIIM), LoRa relay node, and underwater acoustic communication (UAC) modem. The UAC Modem and LoRa used as communication modules are connected to various ocean observation sensors through the SIIM. Opportunistic routing and transmission control are implemented by embedded chip programming. The system has been tested on Zhairuoshan Island, Zhoushan Archipelagoes, China, and the transmission success rate exceeds 90%. The preliminary verification proves the effectiveness of the proposed system, which is of great significance to marine scientific research, environmental protection, and marine economic development.

Abstract:UASNs are widely used in many applications, and many studies have been conducted. However, most current research projects have not taken network security into consideration, despite the fact that a UASN is typically vulnerable to malicious attacks due to the unique characteristics of an underwater acoustic communication channel (e.g., low communication bandwidth, long propagation delays, and high bit error rates). In addition, the significant differences between UASNs and terrestrial wireless sensor networks entail the urgent and rapid development of secure communication mechanisms for underwater sensor nodes. For the above mentioned reasons, this article aims to present a somewhat comprehensive survey of the emerging topics arising from secure communications in UASNs, which naturally lead to a great number of open research issues outlined afterward.
