Abstract:The occurrence and seasonal variation of 24 dissolved emerging organic contaminants in the Yangtze Estuary were studied, including 12 non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals, seven sulfonamides, two macrolides and three chloramphenicols. Sulfadiazine, erythromycin, thiamphenicol and paracetamol were the primary contaminants in sulfonamides, macrolides, chloramphenicols and non-antibiotic pharmaceutical groups, respectively. Compared to the concentrations at Datong, chloramphenicols at Xuliujing were significantly higher in autumn and winter, while macrolides were lower in spring. Based on the flux estimation, approximately 37.1 tons of sulfonamides, 17.4 tons of macrolides, 79.2 tons of chloramphenicols and 14.1 tons of non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals were discharged into the Yangtze Estuary from June 2013 to May 2014. However, the total flux from the Huangpu River only represented 5% of the total. The pharmaceutical sources were speculated on by analyzing the seasonal variations in pharmaceutical concentrations and fluxes at various sites. Both environmental and social factors might affect the fluxes.
Spatial Risk Assessment and Sources of Heavy Metals in Surface Sediments from Yangpu Port in the Western Hainan Island

Abstract:Surface sediments collected from the largest port in Hainan Island, the Yangpu Port and its surrounding coastal area, were detected by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and atomic fluorescence spectrometry for Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, and Hg, respectively. The present work attempts to determine the status of five heavy metals distribution in sediments, and their ecological risks' assessment in the studied area. Sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) and Hakanson's method were used to determine potential risk of heavy metal contamination. The results indicated that the mean contents of selected metals were never exceeded TEL, which would likely not cause occasionally effects in the studied areas. The calculated mean potential ecological risk degrees were in the descending order of Pb, Hg, Cd, Cu and Zn. Besides, multivariate statistical analyses revealed that Zn, Pb and Cu mainly originated from industrial waste water and sewage which were probably in the close relationship with characteristics about the Coastal industrial; Cd and Hg mainly derived from agricultural wastewater and oil leak. This research provides managers with information needed to better regulate the environment of the Yangpu Port.
Distribution and contamination of trace elements in surface sediments of the Yellow River Estuary and Laizhou Bay, China

Abstract:This study analyzed trace elements (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, and Hg) in 42 surface sediment samples collected from the Yellow River Estuary and Laizhou Bay to characterize their spatial distributions and pollution statuses. Determination of trace elements was carried out by ICP-MS for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, and Cd, and by AFS for As and Hg. The results showed that the average concentrations for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, and Hg were 13.21 mg/kg, 10.61 mg/kg, 21.03 mg/kg, 24.41 mg/kg, 0.14 mg/kg, 6.47 mg/kg, and 14.15 μg/kg, respectively. All the trace elements were classified in the first-class sediment according to the Chinese national standard "Marine Sediment Quality". The higher concentrations and pollution levels were found in the eastern Yellow River estuary which due to inputs from the Yellow River, and northeastern Laizhou Bay which could be attributed to the impacts of human activities at Longkou Port. This study has important scientific value for further understanding the source-sink effects of pollutants and regional environmental effects of heavy metals.

Abstract:The sediment samples were collected from eight sites located in the Pearl River Estuary and the Shenzhen Bay of the west coast of Shenzhen. The distributions of the seven elements Zn, Cr, Hg, Cu, Cd, Pb and As have been analyzed, and their pollution degrees, corresponding potential ecological risks and source identifications have been studied using geo-accumulation index, potential ecological risk index and integrated multivariate statistical methods, respectively. Based on the calculated geo-accumulation indices, the contamination levels of all elements in the Pearl River Estuary are similar to those in the Shenzhen Bay, reflecting that these elements in the study areas have similar sources because of the adequate seawater exchange. The calculated potential ecological risk indices suggest that Cd and Hg are at considerable and moderate risk, respectively. Multivariate statistical analyses further reveal that Zn, Hg, Cd and Pb originated from industrial wastewater, while Cr and Cu are mainly from both industrial wastewater and agricultural sources, and As is mainly from natural source. These research results provide baseline information for both the coastal environment management and the worldwide heavy metal distribution and assessment.

Abstract:Sedimentation of fine-grained deposits on coastal zones and continental shelves are im- portant because of the association with chemical pollutants, and the implication to the impact on biologi- cal processes, the stratigraphic correlations, and changes in sedimentary environments. The Yellow Sea continental shelf receives large quantities of sediment from the Huanghe (Yellow) River. Unfortunately, little attention has been yet paid to the sedimentation on the shallow shelf and its features, and the vertical sediment flux in the area is poorly understood. In this study, nine cores were collected in northern Yellow Sea by the R/V Science 1 in September, 1998 and 1999 to examine the sedimentation rate, sediment flux and the provenance with 210Pb analysis. The 210Pb activity profiles showed that the vertical sediment flux ranged from 0.06 to 1.18 g/cm2·a in the region. In central part of the area, there was a patch of fine-grained mud, with the flux below 0.33 g/cm2·a. Most profiles were featured in two-segment model. Differences in the profiles reflected spatial and temporal variations in hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes. In order to determine the provenance and sedimentary setting in the area, the geochemistry of Ca, Fe, Sr, Cu, Ti and Rb in 11 surficial sediment samples were studied, which showed that in the central northern Yellow Sea, the mud deposit was from multi-source but mainly from the Huanghe River.

Abstract:Bohai Sea is one of the most intensively exploited region in the world and its environment has been severely impacted by the extensive human activities. The Yellow River is the most important river which connects with the Bohai Sea. Therefore, this study focused on analyzing heavy metals (HMs) in 21 surface sediment samples collected from the Yellow River, China. Sequential extraction procedure (SEP), proposed by the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR), was applied in the present study to determine the concentration and fractionation characteristics of these HMs. The aim of this study was to investigate the spatial distribution, fractionation, risk assessment, and sources of HMs, including copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and nickel (Ni). The results obtained from this research will play a significant role in understanding the migration, transformation, and accumulation of HMs for future research in study area. Results of fractionation revealed that most of the HMs in the study area mainly existed in residual fraction; however, Mn mostly existed in exchangeable fraction. A high percentage of reducible fractions was found for Cu and Pb. The mean contamination factor (Cf) values indicated that Pb was the highest. It was >1 and showed moderate contamination, followed by Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn, had <1 and indicated low contamination. Among studied HMs Pb had higher enrichment factor (EF) as compared to others. Significant positive correlations within all studied HMs and principal component analysis (PCA) results indicated their common sources, however, Pb showed the different contamination sources. The total contents of HMs in sediment were compared with the threshold effect level (TEL) and probable effect level (PEL) sediment quality guideline (TEL/PEL-based SQGs) values for trace metals in sediment, as well as literature reported data for comparative purposes, which indicated that the selected river in present study is not severe.

Abstract:In recent decades, coastal ports have experienced rapid development and become an important economic and ecological hub in China. Atmospheric particle is a research hotspot in atmospheric environmental sciences in inland regions. However, few studies on the atmospheric particle were conducted in coastal port areas in China, which indeed suffers atmospheric particle pollution. Lack of the physicochemical characteristics of fine particles serves as an obstacle toward the accurate control for air pollution in the coastal port area in China. Here, a field observation was conducted in an important coastal port city in Yangtze River Delta from March 6 to March 19, 2019. The average PM 2.5 concentration was 63.7 ±27.8 μg/m 3 and NO 3 - , SO 4 2- , NH 4 + , and organic matter accounted for ?60% of PM 2.5. Fe was the most abundant trace metal element and V as the ship emission indicator was detected. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that SK-rich, soot, Fe, SK-soot and SK-Fe were the major individual particles in the coastal port. V and soluble Fe were detected in sulfate coating of SK-Fe particles. We found that anthropogenic emissions, marine sea salt, and secondary atmosphere process were the major sources of fine particles. Backward trajectory analysis indicated that the dominant air masses were marine air mass, inland air mass from northern Zhejiang and inland-marine mixed air mass from Shandong and Shanghai during the sampling period. The findings can help us better understand the physicochemical properties of atmospheric fine particles in the coastal port of Eastern China.
VERTICAL FLUX OF THE SETTLING PARTICULATE MATTER IN THE WATER COLUMN OF THE YELLOW SEA IN SUMMER

Abstract:Settling particulate matter (SPM) was collected using Bloesch multi tube sediment traps at four stations through a transect from Qingdao to Chejudo Island in August 2002. The transect crossed the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass, which has two cold centers during the survey. The sediment traps were surface tethered and planted in three layers at each station, the upper and lower layer of the thermocline above the Cold Water Mass, and the bottom layer of the water column. Of the SPM, the types, the contents of organic carbon, organic nitrogen, total carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorous, the fluxes, and the resuspension ratio in the bottom layer were analyzed in this paper. Two particulate flux models (Model I and Model II) were improved and used to calculate the resuspension ratio, with a key hypothesis in Model I that the vertical flux of the SPM in the lower layer of the thermocline equals to the net vertical flux of SPM in the water column. A X value, i.e. the percent of total resuspension flux constituted by the resuspension flux from the bottom sediments surrounding the sampling station, was deduced from Model I to estimate the contribution of lateral current to the total resuspension flux. Microscopical examination showed that inorganic particulates, fecal pellets, and miscellaneous aggregates were the major types of SPM. Inorganic particulates dominated SPM in the bottom layer due to intensive sediment resuspension at whole stations. A large amount of fecal pellets were found in the lower layer of the thermocline, indicating that the thermocline is the main site of biogenic SPM production. As measured, content of organic carbon, organic nitrogen, total carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorous of SPM decreased with the depth of water column. Content of organic carbon and organic nitrogen in the upper layer of the thermocline was much higher at the outer stations in the Cold Water Mass than that at the middle stations. This may be because the coastal current and the warm current of the Yellow Sea influence the surface layer of the water column at the sides of the Cold Water Mass. The organic carbon fluxes in the lower layer of the thermocline were higher at stations in upwelling areas than those at stations where no upwelling existed. This may be because the upwelling drives a greater amount of nutrients upwards. The resuspension ratios were calculated from 90% to 96% among stations, and the values were not significantly different between the two particulate flux models mentioned above. This indicates that the hypothesis in Model I is acceptable, the vertical flux of SPM in the lower layer of thermocline can be taken as the net vertical flux of SPM in the water column when the latter was unavailable. As results, the mean (±SE) net vertical fluxes of SPM, particulate organic carbon, and particulate organic nitrogen were valued (12.65±3.55), (0.29±0.04), and (0.06±0.01) g/(m 2·d), respectively. The X values were estimated from 47.1% to 79.6% among stations. The bottom lateral current contributed up to 52.9% of the total resuspension flux at the station between the two cold centers of the Cold Water Mass.
Significant impacts of river inputs on the distributions and transports of mercury and methylmercury in nearshore and open seas - Simulation based on field surveys and mass balance modeling

Abstract:Rivers are important sources of Hg for adjacent seas, and seafood from nearshore waters is a major source of Hg exposure for humans. There is thus a key scientific concern regarding how much riverine Hg inputs influence Hg loads in nearshore waters as well as how far the impact range can extend from the river to the open sea. In addition, it is important to understand the influence of anthropogenic hydro-facilities and activities on Hg levels in downstream seas. Because of the concise mass exchange pattern between the seas and the previously demonstrated intensive Hg inputs under anthropogenic regulation from the Yellow River, the Bohai and Yellow Seas, which are key fishery and marine breeding areas for China, are an ideal research area for exploring the impacts of riverine Hg on nearshore and adjacent open seas. Field surveys were conducted in eight major rivers and two seas, and 433 water samples were collected. The main Hg input and output terms (rivers, ocean currents, underground discharge, sewage, coastal erosion, atmospheric deposition, surface evasion, sedimentation, and fisheries) were quantified in the Bohai and Yellow Seas. Owing to the high inputs from the Yellow and Yalu Rivers, elevated THg concentrations were found. Apart from direct MeHg discharge, riverine nutrients may also seemingly affect nearshore MeHg. Using mass balance models, we found that the Yellow River (9.8 t) was the dominant Hg source in the Bohai Sea, which accounted for more than half of all contributions, and the Bohai Sea played the role of a secondary source of Hg to the Yellow Sea, with a flux of 3.3 t. Anthropogenic hydro-activities in large rivers could significantly influence Hg outputs and loads in the nearshore and even open seas. This study provides useful information for water resource management applications to reduce potential MeHg risks.
Estimation of Phosphorus Flux into the Sea Through One Reversing River Using Continuous Turbidities and Water Quality Modeling

Abstract:Based on continuous turbidity values (T) and water quality modeling, one methodology was proposed to estimate phosphorus (P) flux into the sea through the river. There are three steps in the procedure: (1) analyzing the relationship of P and total suspended solid (TSS), TSS and T; (2) estimating P concentrations with high temporal and spatial density along the river; and (3) calculating the amount of phosphorus flux into the sea. From September 2014 to December 2016, 224 data sets were collected at eight sites along the Tonglv River which feeds into the Yellow Sea, China. The linear regression of TSS and T provided a fit with R-2 = 0.944, and TP and TSS presented linear relationship with R-2 = 0.884. It was estimated that about 30,227 kg total phosphorus (TP) flows from the river into the sea from September 2014 to August 2015. It is practicable and credible to use T values and water quality modeling to estimate the process of phosphorus flux. Besides, the procedure proposed could be also applied in analyzing the influence on TP fluxes brought by pollution loading changes. Thus, to facilitate long-term pollutants' fluxes estimation, combining the regression models with water quality modeling might be an effective technique.
Use of a Three-Dimensional Model to Predict Heavy Metal (copper) Fluxes in the Oujiang Estuary

Abstract:Measuring pollutant concentrations in major tributaries is the standard method for establishing pollutant fluxes to the sea. However, this method is costly and difficult, and may be subject to a great deal of uncertainty due to the presence of unknown sources. This uncertainty presents challenges to managers and scientists in reducing contaminant discharges to water bodies. As one less costly method, a three-dimensional model was developed and used to predict pollutant fluxes to the sea. The sorptive contaminant model was incorporated into hydrodynamic and sediment models. Adsorption-desorption of copper by sediments in the Oujiang estuary were described using Henry's law. The model was validated using measured data for water surface elevations, flow velocity/direction, suspended sediment concentrations, and the proportion of copper sorbed to sediment. The validated model was then applied to predict fluxes of copper. Combined with the measured data, the copper concentration in the Oujiang River discharge was calculated as 13.0 μg/L and copper fluxes were calculated as 52 t in 2010. This copper flux prediction was verified using measured dissolved copper concentrations. Comparisons between the modeled and measured results showed good agreement at most stations, demonstrating that copper flux prediction in the Oujiang estuary was reasonably accurate.
SEDIMENTATION RATE AND FLUX OF THE NORTH YELLOW SEA

Abstract:The Yellow Sea continental shelf receives large quantities of sediment from the Yellow River. Regional circulation patterns control the transport of this sediment. Comparatively, little attention has been paid to the sedimentation processes and the sedimentary environments on the shallow shelf; thus, the vertical sediment flux in the North Yellow Sea is poorly understood. Nine cores collected from the North Yellow Sea by the R/V “Gold Star” were used to examine the processes of sediment accumulation and sedimentation flux.~(210)Pb analysis and the~(210)Pb activity profiles showed that vertical sediment flux ranged from 0.06 to 1.18 g·cm~(-2)·a~( -1) in the region. In the central part of the North Yellow Sea, there is a patch of fine-grained mud, with the sediment flux being lower than 0.33 g·cm~(-2)·a~( -1) at Station C4 (Station C1: 0.06 g·cm~(-2)·a~(-1); Station C2: 0.07 g·cm~(-2)·a~( -1);Station C3: 0.20 g·cm~(-2)·a~( -1)). Most of the~(210)Pb profiles were characterized by a two-segment model. Differences in the profiles reflected spatial and temporal variations in hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes. In order to determine the material source and sedimentary environment in the North Yellow Sea, chemical elements Ca, Fe, Sr, Cu, Ti and Rb of 10 surficial deposit samples were measured. The geochemistry characteristics showed that in the central North Yellow Sea the mud deposit had multi-source nature in terms of sediment supply, with a main source from the Yellow (River.)
Organism Qualities and Pollution Assessment at the Yellow Sea of Jiangsu Province

Abstract:We investigated contamination levels of heavy metals(Cu,Pb,Cr,Cd,As,Hg) and petroleum hydrocar-bon in marine organisms,fishes and crustaceans,in the Huanghai Sea area of Jiangsu Province.Single-Factor Pol-lution Index and integrated Pollution Load Index were used to assess the contamination levels in fishes and crusta-ceans.We found that the pollution level in the Yangtze River estuary and Lvsi port was relatively high with a pollu-tion load index of 0.35,while the pollution load index of Haizhou estuary and Dongsha area was about 0.25.Cd contamination in the Dongsha area was relatively severe.Relatively high levels of total As were found in both fishes and crustaceans.Most organisms suffered from moderate petroleum hydrocarbon pollution.Cd levels in crustaceans were close to the food safety standard;in contrast,levels of Cu,Pb,Cr and Hg were far below the standard.
Transport of mercury in a regulated high-sediment river and its input to marginal seas

Abstract:Seafood is a major source of Hg exposure for humans, and rivers are an important source of Hg for adjacent seas. The Yellow River is an extremely high-sediment river that is heavily influenced by anthropogenic water facilities, especially sediment regulations, which might result in significant intra- and inter- year flux variations on pollutants. Overestimations of Hg flux were found in previous studies on high-sediment rivers, and a comprehensive study of Hg transport along such a river has not yet been attempted. In this study, we quantified the fates of Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) in the Yellow River and its main branches, as well as the impacts of anthropogenic activities, including deposition of contaminants in the reservoirs, diversion in the downstream, and sediment regulation, by sampling in 2017 and 2018,and comparing the two typical years with and without sediment regulation. The total Hg (THg) and MeHg concentrations in the Yellow River and its tributaries were high, and extremely high MeHg/THg ratios were found in the three sampled reservoirs. The river discharges substantial amounts of THg and MeHg into the Bohai Sea, and particulate Hg in the humid period accounts for a large proportion. A significant increase in Hg flux into the ocean was found in 2018 compared with that in 2017, which was primarily attributed to the altered hydrology caused by sediment regulation. Substantial amounts of Hg were impounded in the reservoirs, and only a small fraction was discharged downstream of the reservoir in the non-regulation years. Moreover, Hg fluxes to the coastal ocean were impacted by downstream water diversion in non-regulation years, whereas the contributions of diversions in regulation years were small. In conclusion, models showed that in recent 15 years, sediment regulation can enhance the Hg burden and risk to coastal ecosystem of Bohai Sea.

Abstract:Riverine mercury (Hg) is the largest global source of Hg in coastal oceans. The Yellow River delivers the majority of Hg to the semi-enclosed Bohai Sea, where Hg contamination adversely affects the surrounding heavily populated provinces in northern China. Mercury distribution patterns in the river-estuary interacting area provides essential information to understand the riverine Hg transport and biogeochemical cycling of Hg in the estuary. Analyzing the spatial distributions of total- (THg) and methyl-Hg (MeHg) in the lower end of Yellow River (∼105 km) and adjacent estuary, we found the dominant role of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in Hg transport, with 99.1% and 86.3% of THg and MeHg being in particulate phase. The SPM dynamics, such as transport, retention, sorting and sedimentation, governs Hg transport with water flow and particle-water partition of Hg. While THg decreased along the water flow to the river mouth with the settlement of particulate THg (about 27.5% onto the riverbed and the rest entering the sea), MeHg and particulate MeHg increased by 110% and 117%, respectively. This study highlights the distinct patterns in THg and MeHg distribution and transport and suggests potential Hg methylation and external MeHg input in the river-estuary mixed zone.

Estimation Methods and Monitoring Network Issues in the Quantitative Estimation of Land-Based COD and TN Loads Entering the Sea: a Case Study in Qingdao City, China

Abstract:At present, the monitoring network of China cannot provide sufficient data to estimate land-based pollutant loads that enter the sea, and estimation methods are imprecisely used. In this study, the selection of monitoring stations, monitoring frequency, and pollutant load estimation methods was studied in Qingdao City, a typical coastal city in China, taken as an example. Land-based pollutant loads from Qingdao were estimated, and load distribution, density, and composition were analyzed to identify the key pollution source regions (SRs) that need to be monitored and controlled. Results show that the administrative land area of Qingdao can be divided into 25 sea-sink source regions (SSRs). A total of 14 more rivers and 62 industrial enterprises should be monitored to determine the comprehensive pollutant loads of the city. Furthermore, the monitoring frequency of rivers should not be less than three times/year; a monitoring frequency of five or more times is preferable. The findings on pollutant load estimation with the use of different estimation methods substantially vary; estimation results with the use of ratio-based methods were 10 and 22 % higher than those with the use of monitoring-based methods in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN), respectively. None-point sources contributed the majority of the pollutant loads at about 70 % of the total COD and 60 % of the total TN.
Spatiotemporal Variation of Surface Sediment Quality in the Xiamen Sea Area, China

Abstract:The study analyzes the survey data on the surface sediments in 355 stations in Xiamen Sea area during 2004-2006, 2007-2009, 2010-2013, and 2014-2016. The result finds that contents of TOC, sulfide, and oils in the surface sediments were generally low but showed significant spatial differences (p < 0.05) in most cases, with TOC in the West Sea area (WS) staying significantly higher than other sea areas. Xiamen Sea area suffered universal heavy metal pollution mainly from Cu and Zn for years in the WS, the Jiulong River Estuary (JE), and the East Sea area (ES), and the heavy metal pollution index (HPI) exhibited significant spatial differences across the four periods (p < 0.05). With the source of heavy metals in the WS being mainly related to human activities, Cu and Zn were related to the development of port shipping and Pb to aquaculture. The heavy metal pollution in JE was mainly related to the input of rivers emptying into the sea. The high Cu content in the ES was related to the direct discharge of massive domestic sewage into the sea at the time. From 2004 to 2016, the potential ecological risks of heavy metals in Xiamen Sea area stayed low.

Abstract:Based upon the experimental results of Hg Concentration in water(raw water and filtered water),sediments and 16 kinds of fishes, the situation of Hg in the Yalu river’s estuary has been demonstrated in this paper.On the basis of the evaluation of the largest pollution source of Yalu River Basin, three control countermeasures were proposed. From the experimental results of Hg removal by H 2S method, the technological and economic feasibility were described.

Abstract:Field determination and ecological risk assessment of dissolved lead (Pb) were performed at two Yellow Sea sites in China using a continuous automated electrochemical system (CAEDS). This CAEDS instrument includes an automatic triple filter sampler and an electrochemical detection water quality analyzer, which might be operated automatically four times daily. The dissolved Pb concentrations varied from 0.29 to 1.57 μg/L in the South Yellow Sea over 16 days and from 0.32 to 2.28 μg/L in the North Yellow Sea over 13 days. During the typhoon and algal bloom periods, the Pb concentration was as high as ten times greater than usual. According to the calculation of contamination factors (Cf) and subsequent analysis, seawater quality was classified as Grade II. Through species sensitivity distribution (SSD) method experiments and ecological risk analysis, an average risk quotient (RQ) below 1 for both areas was obtained, indicating a low-to-moderate ecological risk. This system will be helpful for Pb monitoring and assessment in seawater and contribute to the biogeochemical cycling study of Pb.

Abstract:Based on the flux data of river sections obtained with ADCP and the materials of pollutant density such as CODMn,NH3-N,TP and petroleum etc.,the pollutant flux of the main sections in Qiantang River is analyzed in the paper.The result indicates that the study on pollutant flux which considers water quality and water quantity reflects well the amount of pollution load.It is an effective way to understand and evaluate the sending amount and contributing quantity of the main section pollutant.The study on pollutant flux in rivers is carried out while controlling river pollution in the future.
