Abstract:Liu xizai is a famous writer in literary criticism in late Qing Dynasty,whose book The Sum of Literature gives a high and correct evaluation of Li bai's poems and is quite creative.This is exhibited in these aspects: the origin of Li bai 's poems can be traced back to Zhuang and Sao;Li bai had great ambitions and wanted to assist a ruler in governing a country,but his poems often represent the opposition;his words have proper limits in essence;Li bai's poems have elegant content and rhythm and besides,he often has Promethean verses.

Abstract:A History of Chinese Historiography by Jin Yufu is considered an important milestone of the initial formation of the discipline——Chinese historiography history. Since the publication of the book, it is full of controversy. Those who praise regard it as the first relatively complete writing of Chinese Historiography; those who criticize argue that the book is a misunderstanding of Chinese Historiography, and some even question the value of this discipline. According to the academic context of Jin Yufu, it is clear that he distinguishes historical materials from historiography based on the difference between jizhu and zhuanshu. Consequently, he legitimate traditional historiography as the materials of the new general history. This idea inherits the Movement for Rearranging the National Heritage, deciding his method, materials, and purport——rearrangement of the traditional historiography, discrimination of historical records, measurement of the historical material value and genre evolution, and the compilation of new general history on the basis of the above three. With his A History of Chinese Historiography and A History of Song, Liao and Jin, Jin Yufu practices his compilation of new general history with the reform of the traditional historiography. With the study of the context and impact of A History of Chinese Historiography, the pluralism of the academic development in the Republic of China can be revealed and thus breaking the subject boundaries.

Abstract:Zhiyin Wenxindiaolun shows the early exploration and attempt of literary criticism among ancient literary theories.Liu Xie holds the idea that the erroneous zones in literary criticism is mostly due to subjective prejudices.Therefore,he vehemently advocates a set of objective all-round method and criteria for judging literary works.However,his critical method goes toward the combination of intuitive perspicacity and rational analysis through his recognition of the irrational and non-objectivization traits of literary appreciative criticism.The passage entitled Zhiyin Wenxindiaolun discloses the trace of Liu Xie in exploration of literary criticism approaches.

Abstract:This group of six papers makes respectively different approaches to literary ethical criticism. Professor Nie Zhenhao makes a pioneering and comprehensive exposition of the notion of literary ethical criticism, including its sources, methods, contents, foundations, the applicable areas, practical values and realistic significance. Professor Knut takes Ibsen′s plays for example to discuss not only the moralities in Ibsen′s plays, but also the necessity and importance of literary ethical criticism. Professor Wang Ning talks about Ecocriticism together with literary ethical criticism, providing a good example for combining literary ethical criticism with some other methods of literary criticism. Based on the three phases of human self-recognition and in a comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives, Professor Liu Jianjun makes a further interpretation of the ethical method in literary criticism. Professor Qiao Guoqiang speculates inquisitively the definition and ideological foundations of the ethical criticism. He also makes a conceptual debate over the authors, their literary works and their readers in terms of the critical method. Believing that it is three-dimensional and apocalyptical, Professor Zou Jianjun discusses the historical and realistic significances of the ethical method in literary criticism. In brief, all the above-mentioned papers attempt to state that in an era of moral invisibility in literary criticism, the critics should be responsible for moral re-establishment through literary criticism and therefore, to recover or retrieve the moral values in literature. They believe that literary ethical criticism is one of the most important approaches to achieving this end.

Abstract:Ethical literary criticism has been a methodology in China since 2004,as at that year two conferences in that field were held respectively in Nanchang and Yichang and then comes the highly-cited paper "Ethical Approach to Literary Studies: A New Perspective." Compared with ethic criticism in west countries,ethical literary criticism in China has its own features: it changes the literary ethics into ethical literary criticism as a mean efficiently to solve practical literary questions,uses the concept of ethical literary criticism rather than ethical criticism to construct its own discourse,and discusses the basic theoretical questions by case studies.It is those features that make it different from ethical criticism in the west,as well as moral criticism in China.

Abstract:He Zhuo was a commentator in early Qing dynasty.This paper studies his poem criticism,taking Li Shangyin's poems as example.For him,criticism was academic reach exactly.He connected textual research and criticism,which guided a new way of criticism.And he fabricated his poem theory by criticism,overmatch criticism in Ming dynasty which was just the emotion in the reading.What's more his criticism had academic value because he commented on the base of textual research.So his criticism had great academic and poetic value.

Abstract:Ethical literary criticism is a research method to read, analyze and interpret literary works, to study literary authors and literary problems from perspective of ethics. The basic thought of this method is that literature is the art of ethics in nature as it is the special expressions of ethical ideas and moral life in a particular historical period. Literature is not art of languages but of text consisting of characters. It is not ideology or aesthetic ideology, but material form existing by literal text. Teaching or instruction is the essential attribute and first function of literature, but aesthetic appreciation is the second which serves the first. Abstract:This paper studies the origin and development of Chinese modern criticism and its gradual superceding of the traditional form of shi hua (comments on poetry).The author calls attention to the embrace of modernity and its value by Chinese intellectuals in the 20th century - a fact which has been neglected in the discussion over "reconstructing Chinese literary criticism" in 1980s. The opposition of the modern against the traditional, and the wandering between the two, marks the duality of modern Chinese literary criticism.

Abstract:Ethical literary criticism, a highly original and self-contained critical approach proposed by Nie Zhenzhao, has witnessed a robust development in both China and parts of the world ever since its debut in 2004. Many Chinese and foreign scholars of considerable stature have gravitated toward this vigorous theory and produced a multitude of academic outcomes. Abstract:This article is an unpublished manuscript of the late Professor Zhu Dongrun,probably written in June,1940. Before that Professor Zhu had finished his Shiji kaosuo( textual research of Shiji) as part of his teaching arrangement,but he concerned more about the biographical literature in ancient China. He wrote Revolution of Biographic Literature,including this article,which is a monograph on biographies and entire books. This article comes to the scope of official history, discusses about the relation and differences between historical biography and biographical literature,and gives insight into Guanyan liezhuan,Weigongzi zhuan,Weiqi wuanhou zhuan,and the pros and cons of the biographic narration in Xiangyu benji and Liubang benji( emperors' biography). It is one of the best works during Professor Zhu's academic peak,vigorously and critically written,with meticulous analysis and deep insights. A mind integrated the West and East,the past and present is demonstrated in the article.

Abstract:Ethical literary criticism is a theory of interpreting and analyzing literature from an ethical perspective. It examines literature as a unique expression of ethics and morality within a certain historical period, and argues that literature is not just an art of language, but also an art of text. Ethical literary criticism is aimed at interpreting literary texts, claiming that almost all literary texts are the records of human beings' moral experiences and contain ethical structures or ethical lines. Ethical lines form the main ethical structure. Compared to the written text in literature, the text of oral literature, which can be termed as brain text, is stored in the human brain. The material and fundamental existence of literature is based on written context. The evolving definition of literature is dependent upon the culture and context from which it originated.

Abstract:Based on Shi Shuo Xin Yu, which is stored in Shanghai Library, this paper cites the related documents and investigates the cause and process of Ling Menchu's inscriptions and criticisms on the classical novel. The paper also analyses the characteristics and significance of his 155 commentaries. Abstract:Mr. Qiu Xigui is generally acknowledged throughout the academia as an accomplished scholar in the fields of ancient philology, ancient documents and early history of China. In March 2007, he accepted the interview of the special correspondent of the Journal of Literature, History and Philosophy. During the interview, Mr. Qiu looked back upon the course of his studies and research, and talked freely on the problems of the "Ku-shih-pien" School, early Chinese history, the studies of excavated documents, "the Method of Dual Evidence", "Times of the Five Lords", etc. From his viewpoint, the "Ku-shih-pien" School is correct in the general orientation on the knowledge of the early history, but needs much redress in textual criticism, therefore nowadays, we should assimilate its historical skepticism with discrimination. Since the 1970s, there has emerged a large amount of excavated books and records, yet to the studies of the excavated documents, the handed-down ancient Classics and the studies of the Classics done by scholars through the ages are still the foundation. The main problem with the current Chinese classical studies, including the studies of excavated documents, does not lie in the lack of theory or method, but in the lack of scientific attitude on the part of the researchers. We must advocate academic morality and conscience, as well as a realistic and matter-of-the-fact attitude that holds everything for the purpose of the academics itself.

Abstract:As an original critical theory formulated by a Chinese scholar, ethical literary criticism has received a large amount of attention from the academics. This paper, with reference to Nie Zhenzhao's new monograph Introduction to Ethical Literary Criticism, reviews the background and significance of ethical literary criticism before illuminating its major arguments and core issues such as the origin of literature, the existential forms of text (brain text, material text, and digital text), ethical selection, and Sphinx factor. Apart from surveying the critical receptions of ethical literary criticism in China, it also offers three tentative suggestions for the future development of this new critical theory, namely, the construction of its critical principles, the examination of the interconnections between ethics and narrative forms, and the necessity of placing dialogues between ethical criticism in the West and ethical literary criticism in China.

Abstract:Both Cao Pi and Liu Xie were the first class critics in Wei-jin Dynasty. In that period,both literary creation and criticism had quiet great progress. As a forerunner with Self-knowledge in the critical history of Wei-jin Dynasty, Cao Pi had great influence over Liu Xie. Many critical works have mentioned this point. However, almost none had deeper analysis for it. When reading the literary works of Wei-jin Dynasty, Liu Xie obviously fevered Cao Pi. Behind the language level, the works by Liu Xie shown that criticism spirit and sense was the essential agreement between Cao Pi and Liu Xie.

Abstract:The strong interest in literature in Chinese academic tradition has sustained even a contemporary development of such studies as emendation of text,history of literature,history of book publishing,and history of book collecting.And yet,unfortunately,little attention has been directed to the cultural and social functions of literature at large.The overseas sinologists’works on Chinese social history of books prove to be weak due to their indiscriminate transplant of western ideas and methodology.Different from the western one,the critical issue concerning the social and cultural functions of books in China is absolutely no more than the relation of a long history of book publishing and collecting to its influence on the social development and cultural heritage in ancient China.Only with"literature in culture"in mind can we attain a more profound understanding of Chinese ancient literature.
