Abstract:In the paper, two main methods, which are Serum Pharmacology and Traditional Pharmacology, were adopted to study Chinese traditional medicine, such as Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE), ginsenosides (GS) and compound GG (GBE+GS), pharmacology in vitro. The results showed that there were evident difference between the results of Serum Pharmacology and that of Traditional Pharmacology. There was no significant difference between the drug effect of crude GS on nitric oxide (NO) production in ECV304 and that of crude GBE, and the drug effect of GG was superior to that of GS and GBE, respectively. But, compared with GBE serum, the GS serum up-regulation of NO production in ECV304 increased significantly, and the GG serum up-regulation of the NO production in ECV304 was inferior to that of GS serum and GBE serum significantly. The results suggested that Serum Pharmacological study should be adopted in the pharmacological investigation on the Chinese traditional medicine and the drug screening of the Chinese traditional medicine.

Abstract:This paper introduces the concept of TCM serum pharmacochemistry and its methodology in studying the disciplines concerning pharmacy,and especially discusses the application of seropharmacology,pharmaceutics,the pharmacodynamic material foundation of compound preparation and the hospital preparations、compatibility of medicines in prescription,drugfever,pharmacogenomics and individualization dosage regimen.As the species in blood and the possible metabolites which have been demonstrated to originate from the prescription are responsible for the observed efficacy,the authors pointed out that the TCM serum pharmacochemistry may play a contributing role in facilitating the TCM modernization.

Abstract:Serum pharmacochemistry of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is designed to screen the efficacy material base of TCMs from the constituents absorbed into the blood after oral administration. The theory and method is in accordance with the effect characteristics of TCMs, and reflects the interaction between the body and the drugs, has become an effective pathway for researching the efficacy material base of TCMs which has been recognized and used widely. In the paper, the previous research contents and methods of the serum pharmacochemistry of TCM were reviewed, and on the basis of the further validity of the special administration form of the TCM formula and the corresponding property to TCM syndrome, the new strategy of serum pharmacochemistry of TCM integrating the metabonomics technologies was put forward. According to the strategy, we take the biological characters of TCM syndrome as a research starting point, taking TCM formula as object, using the metabolic biomarkers of syndromes or disease to evaluate the therapeutic effect of formula and screen the compounds of TCMs in serum which are highly correlated with the metabolic biomarkers through the correlation analysis, and by further biological validation to finally confirm the efficacy material basis of TCMs. Integrating with the systems biology technologies, the theory and method of serum pharmacochemistry of TCM will further develop, and open a new chapter in the interpretation of the theory of TCM.

Abstract:With the advent of modern medical science,the effective compounds of traditional Chinese medicine has become the sure way into the world and get some recognition in the international area.A review,including the major domestic and foreign research methods in this field,was made,based on the summary of many reports,and some of the details in the research process,such as the selection of subjects,as well as effects of the experimental method for testing the sample processing,and ultimately to determine the effect of composition and other issues are analyzed and explained.As science and technology advances,the effective compounds of Chinese herbal formula research will have more new methods,new technologies inevitably,to resolve the current problem which is not yet solved.Through a multi-disciplinary,collaborative and exchanges,which will bring new development of the effective compounds of Chinese herbal formula.

Abstract:The modern research of Chinese herbal prescription has achieved some progress. The research showed that Chinese herbal prescription could enhance the immune function of animals by immune regulation, so as to prevent and control manly kinds of diseases. The effects of Chinese herbal prescription on the immune organ, cellular immunity and humoral immunity of animals were reviewed. Abstract:Herb serological pharmacology is an important method in pharmacological investigation of Chinese medicinal herb. The interaction between different components found inside a compound herb may be cooperative, antagonistic or synergic; and the mechanism and approach of this interaction are characterized by multi-direction, multi-layers and multi-targets. Abstract:Traditional herbal medicine, an alternative medicine in the clinical setting, has received increased attention in recent years. Before delivery to the body, an additional extraction procedure is commonly required to release the active constituents from raw herbs. Water decoction is a classical extraction procedure that is still broadly used in the clinical settings. Here, we propose a detailed protocol for er-xian decoction (EXD) in order to apply herbal decoctions to experimental studies. The calculation of an animal-appropriate dose is described, as well as the four main steps of EXD: soaking, water decoction, filtration, and concentration. In addition, serum-containing EXD is introduced to rats as a means of in vitro validation. Here, rats were orally administered EXD for three days. Blood samples were then collected, inactivated, centrifuged, and filtered. The serum, diluted with the culture medium, can be utilized to treat cells or tissues in vitro. For example, EXD was applied to both in vivo and in vitro studies and demonstrated that EXD enhances osteogenesis. This protocol can be used as a reference for the preparation and application of herbal medicines.

Abstract:This article will review selected herbal products used in traditional Chinese medicine, including medicinal mushrooms ( bā xī mó gū; Agaricus blazei, yún zhī; Coriolus versicolor, líng zhī; Ganoderma lucidum, xiāng xùn; shiitake, Lentinus edodes, niú zhāng zhī; Taiwanofungus camphoratus), Cordyceps ( dōng chóng xià cǎo), pomegranate ( shí liú; Granati Fructus), green tea ( lǜ chá; Theae Folium Non Fermentatum), garlic ( dà suàn; Allii Sativi Bulbus), turmeric ( jiāng huáng; Curcumae Longae Rhizoma), and Artemisiae Annuae Herba ( qīng hāo; sweet wormwood). Many of the discussed herbal products have gained popularity in their uses as dietary supplements for health benefits. The review will focus on the active constituents of the herbs and their bioactivities, with emphasis on the most recent progress in research for the period of 2003 to 2011.

Abstract:Animal medicine is a large category of Chinese medicinecommonly used in clinical practice and has important scientific and therapeutic value. Animal medicine isscarcer than herbal medicine. In recent years, with the vigorous development of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),the contradiction between the increasing industrial demand andsupply of scarce and even endangered medicinal animals has become increasingly prominent. The continuous lack of medicinal animal resources affects the clinical demandandalso causes serious damage to the ecological environment. Only relying on artificial breeding is not enough to alleviate the current condition of depletion. In the face of this dilemma, it is a major challenge for the current industrial development to protect animal resources and meet clinical and industrial needs with "available medicines". The application of substitutes for animal medicines isthe key focus to alleviate this problem, and it is also the key scientific issue to be solved urgently in the modernization of TCM. This paper summarizedand reviewedthe history, current situation, strategies, and methods of animal medicinesubstitution and put forward the point of view of "similar chemical characteristics, similar efficacy, and higher safety" to provide references for scientific substitution and resource protection of rare animals.

Abstract:Through many studies, many traditional Chinese herbal medicines and compound traditional Chinese medicines preparation can enhance the immune functions of livestock and poultry and improve disease resistance. And because Chinese herbal medicines derived from nature with abundant resources, low cost, low side effects, no residue, and were used widely, so the rational use of Chinese herbal medicine in clinic provide a more secure and environmental methods to prevent diseases of livestock and poultry. In this paper, the applications of three Chinese herbal medicines in Clinical Veterinary were illustrated briefly.

Abstract:The emerging development of Extractive Reference Substance (ERS) is a methodology that meets the needs for quality control for Chinese Herbal Medicines (CHM) and respects the holistic viewpoint of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and its clinical use of multiple ingredients with synergistic effects. The convention of using just a selected few Chemical Reference Substances (CRS) cannot adequately assess the quality of intact CHM. A validated chemical spectrum of an ERS provides the global characteristics in order to more specifically identify and assess targeted CHM. This paper describes the fundamental concepts, potential significance, and basic criteria of ERS, along with methods of preparation and calibration. Given the diversity of CHM, the various problems that will occur in establishing the proper process of ERS will need to be solved in a step by step manner. The ERSs of Ziziphi spinosae semen and ERS of Fritillaria thunbergii bulbus are given as examples of the development of ERS and demonstrate why we are optimistic about the utility of this approach.
