Abstract:Core competence theory with its powerful explain force has been widely recognized by scholars,and has been widely used in the analysis of competitive strategy.However,the insufficient research of core competence theory also severely hindered its universal and practical nature.Based on this,we have creatively presented and defined the concept of relative core competence narrowly.Core competition is,in the specific context,the valuable,scarce,difficult to imitate and irreplaceable cumulative knowledge.That's to say,competition,in specific situations meets the criteria of core competencies. Abstract:This paper constructs the measurement index of core competence by text analysis method and empirically tests the influence of core competence on enterprise capital structure. We find that the stronger the core competence is, the lower the asset-liability ratio will be, which means core competence can help enterprises to deleverage. The mechanism test finds that the influence of core competence on enterprise capital structure is realized by enhancing profitability and increasing internal free cash flow, which supports the pecking order theory. Further research shows that (1) the influence of core competence on enterprise capital structure mainly plays a role in enterprises with high level of debt, indicating that core competence can play a positive role and effectively reduce the leverage ratio of high-leverage enterprises, and (2) the core competence can effectively reduce the leverage ratio of both state-owned enterprises and non-state-owned enterprises, indicating that core competence can play a positive role and achieve a full deleveraging. This paper clarifies the mechanism of core competence on enterprise capital structure, enriches the literature on the economic consequences of core competence and factors affecting enterprise capital structure, and provides scientific support for governments at all levels to implement the structural deleveraging policy accurately.

Abstract:In some enterprises, the main problem that hinders the leverage of innovation capability is lacking the absorptive capability, which is usually caused by the high turnover rate of R&D talent. The root cause is the variance in strategic direction, which actually has negative effects on technological innovation. However, the research of enterprises' innovation capability leverage is still in the exploration. Concerning the problems in enterprises, based on the previous study at home and abroad, this paper focuses on how to leverage innovation capability through strategy. From the previous studies and two explorative case studies, a problem-oriented model is established, which focuses on how to leverage innovation capability through strategy. The hypotheses are proposed and tested by data from 420 small and medium sized enterprises that respond to our questionnaire. At last, some suggestions about how to leverage enterprises' innovation capability are proposed.

Abstract:In this paper, the system dynamics model of technological competence of the firms and capital accumulation was set up. By computer simulation and policy analysis of this model, the interaction and dynamic development of technological competence and capital accumulation was worked out. Furthermore, the optimal ratio between importing and indigenous R&D expenditure as well as optimal rate of capital accumulation was obtained.

Abstract:There is much research discussing the issues of core competence, core capability, business performance and corporate growth. But the lack of studies exploring their causality is an important research gap. In this research, we develop a framework of a core capabilities operation system, which systematically integrates these critical initiatives, and can be used to develop the extended model of business development. In order to conduct the empirical study, we also design a strategic map of an enterprises' long-term development model. In this model the elements of a fundamental field cultivate the core competences, and further develop the core capabilities. These core competences and capabilities are the drivers of core competitiveness, which force the long-term development and excellent business. Based on this framework, we can develop the structure equation model, and the related questionnaire for the empirical study, in order to determine the critical initiatives and the relationships among these constructs. Based on the analytic results, the causalities among these critical initiatives can be confirmed. We also discover that ‘good organisation culture’ and ‘excellent management team’ are the most important firm’ fundamentals, which support the successful implementation of core competences and core capabilities. Herewith the ‘specialised technologies’, ‘powerful IT system’ and capturing the customers' needs' are the core competences, and ‘product lifetime management’ and ‘total quality management’ are the important capabilities. Core competitiveness is composed of ‘business development strategies’, ‘leader of core products’, and ‘innovative products’, which can result in the firm's excellent business performances.

Abstract:This paper aims at helping firms to define the reasonable motivation by view of sustainable development strategy. Only when the firms implement MA by constructing and cultivating their core competency, can the new organic bodies integrate effectively. Then, the new bodies can realize the coordinate and sustainable development. By analyzing the relation between MA and construction and cultivation of core competency, the paper presents an overall framework of models of MA based upon the firms' core competencies. Then, it discusses the concrete models of MA, namely managing capability based core competency, marketing capability based core competency, technovation capability based core competency, culture power based core competency.

Abstract:Traditional approaches to studying competitive advantage, while valuable, are not adequate to explain how firms can operate effectively in turbulent and often chaotic environments. A resource or skill-based view focusing on development and application of core competences is offered to supplement the traditional approaches. We present a model of the development and outcomes of dynamic core competences based on organizational meta-learning. A firm’s core competence(s) is defined as a set of problem-defining and problem-solving insights that fosters the development of idiosyncratic strategic growth alternatives. Dynamic core competences are based on the integration into systemic meta-learning of universal and tacit knowledge through information transfer, redefinition of heuristics and continuous improvement based on experimentation and the development of firm-specific skills based on dynamic routines. Dynamic core competences can be leveraged to create growth alternatives of global diversification, new applications of existing technologies and/or the development of new lines of business. Finally, dynamic core competences can be used to reduce uncertainty and to induce path dependencies that create causal ambiguity (making imitation from other firms difficult). In so doing, they can form the basis of competitive advantages.

Abstract:This paper explores the interactive relationship between exploration-exploitation strategy and alliance portfolios evolution, through examining underlying motivations of the evolution of alliance portfolios along with firm strategy change. Based on a 20-year longitudinal case analysis on a leading Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturer, we establish a three-stage process model: (1) stage 1: under turbulent environment and with the consequent reduction in profitability, the firm implements exploration strategy and forms weak alliance portfolio; (2) stage 2: the firm transforms its strategy from exploration to exploitation and forms strong alliance portfolio; and (3) stage 3: as this single business firm transforms into a multibusiness firm, it tends to make a balance between exploration and exploitation strategy and form weak-strong alliance portfolio. Based on this process model, this study reveals the diverse motivations of alliance portfolios evolution along with firm strategy change, the interplay mechanisms between exploration-exploitation strategy and weak-strong ties portfolios, and the portfolio effects across businesses within a firm.

Abstract:Core competencies are the crown jewels of a company and, therefore, should be carefully nurtured and developed. Companies can determine their future business directions based on the strengths of competencies. However, because generalized terms such as resource, asset, capability, and competence are not clearly explained in connection with competence theory, these posing difficulties in understanding many contemporary management concepts. In this paper, we provide a summary of the recent management theories by comparing their salient features. We then propose a linking mechanism between assets, resources, capabilities, competencies, and core competencies. We provide a methodology to identify core competencies by isolating unique and flexible capabilities of the firm. We use this framework to identify the core competencies of a U.K. manufacturing company. The results of our analyses is to help the company to make more informed strategic management decision regarding capability development, outsourcing, focusing, or diversification, with regards to new products, services, or markets. The framework is generic in nature and is applicable to benchmark a manufacturing, public, or service sector organization.

Abstract:In recent years, core competence of corporation has been widely concerned by management theorists and industrial practitioners. But there is not a widely accepted definition of core competence up to now. This paper presented a new framework of core competence, i.e., a hierarchy system model. The authors argue that core competence is a system consisting of competence component and competence architecture. It is a hierarchy system including business environment, corporation, subject, technology, product, and core product subsystem. Core competence is the source of sustainable competitive advantage because it can generate sustainable rents. Finally core competence is dynamics. It evolves with the changing of a firm internal and external environment.

Abstract:This paper, unlike previous studies, focuses on the decomposition of impacts of core competencies on firm performance and the moderating effects of environmental turbulence on the basis of developing structural equation models using the partial least square (PLS) method. By taking a disaggregated approach, the decomposed effects of core competencies on firm performance are examined and the relative influences of all three major constituents of core competencies, marketing competencies, technological competencies and integrative competencies, are studied. Furthermore, this approach helps to avoid the so-called “pitfall” of being vague, tautological, endlessly recursive, and non-operational, for which some studies based on a resource-based view have been criticized. All three constituents are found to have significant influences on firm performance. And these relationships are moderated significantly by environmental turbulence such as market turbulence and technological turbulence, except that market turbulence is found to have no significant moderating effect on the relationship between integrative competencies and firm performance.
