Abstract:In recent decades, monitoring gases across various scenarios has become a paramount concern for all the people around the world. Consequently, substantial attention has been devoted to the exploration of gas-active materials. MXenes, owing to their abundant surface groups, hydrophilicity, tunable electrical conductivity, and excellent thermal conductivity, have emerged as promising candidates for gas sensing. This comprehensive review delves into the recent progress of MXene-based gas sensors. Firstly, we provide a synopsis of the elemental compositions, structures, properties, and preparation methods of MXenes. Subsequently, we review the applications of MXenes in different gas sensing fields, encompassing ammonia, acetone, toluene, ethanol, and nitrogen oxides. Finally, the existing challenges and potential research directions related to the application of MXenes in gas sensing are discussed. This review aims to elucidate the state of the art of gas sensors based on MXenes and to inspire further exploration of their myriad possibilities in this field.

Abstract:Sensing technology has been widely investigated and utilized for gas detection. Due to the different applicability and inherent limitations of different gas sensing technologies, researchers have been working on different scenarios with enhanced gas sensor calibration. This paper reviews the descriptions, evaluation, comparison and recent developments in existing gas sensing technologies. A classification of sensing technologies is given, based on the variation of electrical and other properties. Detailed introduction to sensing methods based on electrical variation is discussed through further classification according to sensing materials, including metal oxide semiconductors, polymers, carbon nanotubes, and moisture absorbing materials. Methods based on other kinds of variations such as optical, calorimetric, acoustic and gas-chromatographic, are presented in a general way. Several suggestions related to future development are also discussed. Furthermore, this paper focuses on sensitivity and selectivity for performance indicators to compare different sensing technologies, analyzes the factors that influence these two indicators, and lists several corresponding improved approaches.

Abstract:Gas sensor technology is widely utilized in various areas ranging from home security, environment and air pollution, to industrial production. It also hold great promise in non-invasive exhaled breath detection and an essential device in future internet of things. The past decade has witnessed giant advance in both fundamental research and industrial development of gas sensors, yet current efforts are being explored to achieve better selectivity, higher sensitivity and lower power consumption. The sensing layer in gas sensors have attracted dominant attention in the past research. In addition to the conventional metal oxide semiconductors, emerging nanocomposites and graphene-like two-dimensional materials also have drawn considerable research interest. This inspires us to organize this comprehensive 2020 gas sensing materials roadmap to discuss the current status, state-of-the-art progress, and present and future challenges in various materials that is potentially useful for gas sensors.

Abstract:In this review article, we discuss in detail the fundamentals of semiconductor gas sensing along with their mechanisms, the existed challenges and recent advancements in semiconductor gas sensor design for applications from different perspective. Gas sensors are crucial in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and medical diagnostics. Due to the rising demand for precise and reliable gas detection, there is a rising demand for cutting‐edge gas sensors that possess exceptional sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. Due to their tunable electrical properties, high‐density surface‐active sites, and significant surface‐to‐volume ratio, nanomaterials have been extensively investigated in this regard. The traditional gas sensors utilize homogeneous material for sensing where the adsorbed surface oxygen species play a vital role in their sensing activity. However, their performance for selective gas sensing is still unsatisfactory because the employed high temperature leads to the poor stability. The heterostructures nanomaterials can easily tune sensing performance and their different energy band structures, work functions, charge carrier concentration and polarity, and interfacial band alignments can be precisely designed for high‐performance selective gas sensing at low temperature. In this review article, we discuss in detail the fundamentals of semiconductor gas sensing along with their mechanisms. Further, we highlight the existed challenges in semiconductor gas sensing. In addition, we review the recent advancements in semiconductor gas sensor design for applications from different perspective. Finally, the conclusion and future perspectives for improvement of the gas sensing performance are discussed.

Abstract:Sensors, capable of detecting trace amounts of gas molecules or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are in great demand for environmental monitoring, food safety, health diagnostics, and national defense. In the era of the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data, the requirements on gas sensors, in addition to sensitivity and selectivity, have been increasingly placed on sensor simplicity, room temperature operation, ease for integration, and flexibility. The key to meet these requirements is the development of high-performance gas sensing materials. Two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystals, emerged after graphene, have demonstrated a number of attractive properties that are beneficial to gas sensing, such as the versatile and tunable electronic/optoelectronic properties of metal chalcogenides (MCs), the rich surface chemistry and good conductivity of MXenes, and the anisotropic structural and electronic properties of black phosphorus (BP). While most gas sensors based on 2D atomic crystals have been incorporated in the setup of a chemiresistor, field-effect transistor (FET), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), or optical fiber, their working principles that involve gas adsorption, charge transfer, surface reaction, mass loading, and/or change of the refractive index vary from material to material. Understanding the gas-solid interaction and the subsequent signal transduction pathways is essential not only for improving the performance of existing sensing materials but also for searching new and advanced ones. In this review, we aim to provide an overview of the recent development of gas sensors based on various 2D atomic crystals from both the experimental and theoretical investigations. We will particularly focus on the sensing mechanisms and working principles of the related sensors, as well as approaches to enhance their sensing performances. Finally, we summarize the whole article and provide future perspectives for the development of gas sensors with 2D materials.

Abstract:The strong, continuous progresses in gas sensors and electronic noses resulted in improved performance and enabled an increasing range of applications with large impact on modern societies, such as environmental monitoring, food quality control and diagnostics by breath analysis. Here we review this field with special attention to established and emerging approaches as well as the most recent breakthroughs, challenges and perspectives. In particular, we focus on (1) the transduction principles employed in different architectures of gas sensors, analysing their advantages and limitations; (2) the sensing layers including recent trends toward nanostructured, low-dimensional and composite materials; (3) advances in signal processing methodologies, including the recent advent of artificial neural networks. Finally, we conclude with a summary on the latest achievements and trends in terms of applications.

Abstract:Abstract Gas sensors have been widely utilized penetrating every aspect of our daily lives, such as medical industry, environmental safety testing, and the food industry. In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) materials have shown promising potential and prominent advantages in gas sensing technology, due to their unique physical and chemical properties. In addition, the ultra-high surface-to-volume ratio and surface activity of the 2D materials with atomic-level thickness enables enhanced absorption and sensitivity. Till now, different gas sensing techniques have been developed to further boost the performance of 2D materials-based gas sensors, such as various surface functionalization and Van der Waals heterojunction formation. In this article, a comprehensive review of advanced gas sensing devices is provided based on 2D materials, focusing on two sensing principles of charge-exchange and surface oxygen ion adsorption. Six types of typical gas sensor devices based on 2D materials are introduced with discussion of latest research progress and future perspectives.

Abstract:With the development of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology, the applications of gas sensors in the fields of smart homes, wearable devices, and smart mobile terminals have developed by leaps and bounds. In such complex sensing scenarios, the gas sensor shows the defects of cross sensitivity and low selectivity. Therefore, smart gas sensing methods have been proposed to address these issues by adding sensor arrays, signal processing, and machine learning techniques to traditional gas sensing technologies. This review introduces the reader to the overall framework of smart gas sensing technology, including three key points; gas sensor arrays made of different materials, signal processing for drift compensation and feature extraction, and gas pattern recognition including Support Vector Machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and other techniques. The implementation, evaluation, and comparison of the proposed solutions in each step have been summarized covering most of the relevant recently published studies. This review also highlights the challenges facing smart gas sensing technology represented by repeatability and reusability, circuit integration and miniaturization, and real-time sensing. Besides, the proposed solutions, which show the future directions of smart gas sensing, are explored. Finally, the recommendations for smart gas sensing based on brain-like sensing are provided in this paper.

Abstract:<p>While numerous types of gas sensors have been developed for various industries and applications such as the automotive industry, environmental monitoring, and personal safety, nanoscale chemiresistive gas sensors have gained significant research interest due to several advantages such as high sensitivity, low power consumption, and portability. An essential component of these gas sensors is the sensing material where metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) materials are the most prevalent sensing material. Since the adoption of nanoscale synthesis methods for sensing materials development, such as electrospinning and hydrothermal synthesis, many novel 1D MOS-based nanostructured sensing materials have been demonstrated to enhance gas sensing performance. Overall, nanoengineering approaches and mechanisms for enhancement of gas sensing performance of 1D metal oxide-based sensing materials are systematically discussed and categorized into several overarching strategies, such as tuning of materials dimension, morphology, and composition. Furthermore, integration of 1D sensing nanomaterials into sensor devices are discussed from the perspective of different chemiresistive sensor architectures and device fabrication methods. Finally, this review also discusses use of 1D MOS materials for emerging and novel electronic nose applications.</p>

Abstract:Ambient gas monitoring has been studied for over a century, and the field of self-powered gas sensors is advancing rapidly. Currently, the main solution is the conversion of ambient energy into electrical energy and its use to power gas sensors. Various energy harvesters are available, such as frictional electric nanogenerators, piezoelectric nanogenerators, thermoelectric generators, and photovoltaic cells, to capture different forms of energy. Simultaneously, energy harvesters can be designed to power gas sensors for different atmospheric sensing requirements. Self-powered gas sensors have shown great promise in applications such as human health monitoring, the detection of hazardous gas leaks, the prevention of drunk driving, the preservation of food and pharmaceuticals, agricultural production, and the monitoring of the condition of industrial equipment. However, for commercial applications, significant progress still needs to be made on self-powered gas sensors. In this review, an objective overview of four typical energy harvesting devices is provided, covering types, structures, materials, and energy sources. Self-powered gas sensors are systematically categorized, with the latest research progress in this field presented. Future trends in self-powered gas sensing are then envisioned and the potential for commercialisation is discussed.

Abstract:A gas nanosensor is an instrument that converts the information of an unknown gas (species, concentration, etc.) into other signals (for example, an electrical signal) according to certain principles, combining detection principles, material science, and processing technology. As an effective application for detecting a large number of dangerous gases, gas nanosensors have attracted extensive interest. However, their development and application are restricted because of issues such as a low response, poor selectivity, and high operation temperature, etc. To tackle these issues, various measures have been studied and will be introduced in this review, mainly including controlling the nanostructure, doping with 2D nanomaterials, decorating with noble metal nanoparticles, and forming the heterojunction. In every section, recent advances and typical research, as well mechanisms, will also be demonstrated.

Abstract:Gas sensor, as one of the most important devices to detect noxious gases, provides a vital way to monitor the concentration and environmental information of gas in order to guarantee the safety of production. Therefore, researches on high sensitivity, high selectivity, and high stability have become hot issues. Since the discovery of the nanomaterial, it has been increasingly applied to the gas sensor for its distinguishing surface performances. However, 0-D and 1-D nanomaterials, with limited electronic confinement effect and surface effect, cannot reach the requirement for the production of gas sensors. This paper gives an introduction about the current researching progress and development trend of 2-D nanomaterials, analyzes the common forms of 2-D nanoscale structure, and summarizes the mechanism of gas sensing. Then, widely concerned factors including morphological properties and crystalline structure of 2-D nanomaterial, impact of doped metal on the sensibility of gas sensors, impact of symmetry, and working temperature on the selectivity of gas sensors have been demonstrated in detail. In all, the detailed analysis above has pointed out a way for the development of new 2-D nanomaterial and enhancing the sensibility of gas sensors.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), as an attractive zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterial with unique photoluminescent merits, have recently exhibited significant application potential in gas sensing as a result of their excellent optical/electronic characteristics, high chemical/thermal stability, and tunable surface states. CDs exhibit strong light absorption in the ultraviolet range and tunable photoluminescence characteristics in the visible range, which makes CDs an effective tool for optical sensing applications. Optical gas sensor based on CDs have been investigated, which generally responds to the target gas by corresponding changes in optical absorption or fluorescence. Moreover, electrical gas sensor and quartz crystal microbalance sensor whose sensing layer involves CDs have also been designed. Electrical gas sensor exhibits an increase or a decrease in electrical current, capacitance, or conductance once exposed to the target gas. Quartz crystal microbalance sensor responds to the target gas with a frequency shift. CDs greatly promote the absorption of the target gas and improve the sensitivity of both sensors. In this review, we aim to summarize different types of gas sensors involving CDs, and sensing performances of these sensors for monitoring diverse gases or vapors, as well as the mechanisms of CDs in different types of sensors. Moreover, this review provides the prospect of the potential development of CDs based gas sensors.
