Abstract:A digital controller IC for the flyback converter with primary-side feedback is proposed. The controller is used for adapter charger or LED driver applications. To obtain high accuracy for the primary-side feedback, a digital primary-side sensing technology is adopted, which can auto-track the knee point of the primary auxiliary winding voltage. Furthermore, an internal digital compensator eliminates the need for external loop compensation components while achieving excellent line and load regulation. The controller could output both constant voltage and constant current depending on the load current. Pulse width modulation and pulse frequency modulation are used in constant voltage mode while quasi-resonant control is used in constant current mode. The digital controller is validated by using FPGA.

Abstract:This paper aims at providing a system design of high-power bidirectional DCDC converter for electric vehicles application. Based on previous power-stage design, this paper focuses on control stage-design. The control loop consists of PWM loop and PFM loop to achieve high efficiency compared to traditional PFM only; The control mode consists of power-on mode and normal mode to achieve less overshoot when powering on. Functional blocks level, circuit level, and layout level designs are presented to illustrates the structure and operating of control-stage, especially the control core. Simulations of control IC design in SMIC180nm provide basic function and high performance verification.

Abstract:A design method of an off-line switching power-supply controller with properties of high-efficiency and low-power is presented to improve performances of off-line power supplies. The controller was designed on basis of pulse-width modulation (PWM) mode and pulse skipping modulation (PSM) mode. The design method of the controller loop is based on the peak current mode. The controller operates in PWM mode, when the feedback voltage is less than 4.75 V, and works in PSM mode otherwise, ensuring high efficiency. Additional functions, such as short-circuit protection, over-voltage protection, under-voltage lockout, internal slope compensation, leading-edge blanking on current sense are included. For reducing the electromagnetic interference (EMI), the switching frequency is designed to be randomized within the range of 1 kHz at around centre frequency to flatten the power spectral density (PSD). The chip was implemented by using TSMC's 0.6 μm 40 V high voltage BCD process. Simulation results indicate that the controller realizes the required working modes and performs seamless switching between the modes. The controller can be applied to Li-Ion battery charger with a wide range of AC input (85~264 V) or power adapter.

Abstract:This paper presents a complete digital pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller for MHz active clamp flyback (ACF) converter with gallium nitride (GaN) devices. A proposed model based on state-space averaging is used to predict the dynamic behavior of ACF converter. With the model, a digital PID compensator is introduced to achieve high-speed dynamic response. Meanwhile, a high-resolution digital pulse-width modulator is employed to meet the requirement of tight output voltage regulation. The implementation techniques are experimentally verified on a 45 W (20 V/2.25 A) prototype of ACF converter based on FPGA. The proposed digital control scheme enables the system operates at the switching frequency of 1 MHz and obtains less than 200 us recovery time in case of load transient (2-0.2 A). The AC-DC adapter's prototype can achieve the maximum efficiency of 91.34% and power density (exclude case) of 18 W/in(3).

Abstract:A high-efficiency low-power multimode DC-DC converter with pulse-width modulation (PWM) and pulse-frequency modulation (PFM) is proposed. This converter works in PWM mode on heavy load condition. In order to improve efficiency, it switches to PFM mode on light load condition. With suitable control and mode switch method, both simulation and chip test results indicate that the converter performs seamless switching between PWM and PFM modes. The total output voltage error, including line and load regulation, is less than plusmn2%, the maximum quiescent current is less than 15 muA, the maximum of efficiency reaches 92.6%. Simulated and implemented in CSMC 0.5 mum CMOS process.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel method of realizing PWM/PSM dual-mode controller for high efficiency DC-DC buck converters. A minimum duty cycle control module is added to the PWM control loop, and with a simple logic control, the system can work in PSM mode when the load is light to improve the efficiency of the system over wide load range. A testing chip of the dual-mode DC-DC buck converter is implemented by CSMC's 0.5 mu m 40 V BCD process. The testing results proved the system functioned well in both PWM mode and PSM mode, and switched smoothly between the two modes. The efficiency is greatly improved when the load is light. It is no less than 75% over the whole load range and can reach 91% with heavy load.

Abstract:This paper presents a 45w (20V, 2.25A) output active clamped flyback (ACF) AC-DC controller using a capacitor-coupled integrated digital isolator in isolated communication in place of a bulky optocoupler, which not only helps to reduce system volume but also improves the reliability of the ACF converter. In contrast with the conventional ACF, the controller in this paper features a delicate adaptive zero voltage switching (ZVS) control to reduce conduction and switching losses so as to improve the power efficiency. Designed in a 0.18-& mu;m isolated BCD process, the simulation result shows the proposed ACF converter approached 95.1% maximum efficiency when GaN power transistors are used as power switches. The feasibility of the proposed digital isolator is also verified and exhibits high transmission accuracy with low propagation delay.

Abstract:Detailed operation of the secondary side post regulation application in flyback converter is discussed. Without the minimum output power requirement in the main output just as magnetic amplifier, higher efficiency can be achieved in this circuit. The practical small signal model is also proposed in this paper. Experimental results verify the validity of this circuit.

Abstract:This letter proposed an analog control strategy for a flyback microinverter, which can calculate the output power by multiplier-less power calculation circuit, while the maximum power point tracking is realized by controlling the maximum duty cycle of the main switch. The proposed analog control method is quite simple with low cost. It is applied with a 100-W single-phase microinverter in a discontinuous conduction mode, and the simulation and experimental results demonstrate its feasibility.

Abstract:Flyback converter has been widely used in low power offline applications due to its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. Conventionally, the output voltage or output current are sensed and regulated by an isolated feedback circuit with opto-coupler. In order to further simplify the circuit and reduce the cost, primary side control for flyback converter has been adopted to eliminate the opto-coupler feedback circuit. The primary side output voltage control is quite straightforward. However, the primary side output current control is more complex than the output voltage control, which is also required for many applications like LED drivers. In this paper, a thorough review of the existing output current control methods are presented, including pulse frequency modulation (PFM), current estimation, adaptive peak current value and duty cycle control. Finally, an improved primary side output current control method based on the current estimation is studied, which is more flexible and accurate. Experimental results from a 15W LED driver prototype are presented to verify the performance of the control scheme. © 2013 IEEE.

Abstract:Based on input-series and output-parallel(ISOP) converter and multiple output flyback converter,a kind of auxiliary power supply applicated to high power system is proposed.In the proposed scheme,a new control method with primary side current feedback is presented,so it ensures input voltage sharing and output current sharing of the modules among the ISOP converter,improves the degree of isolation between primary side and secondary side,and e-liminates the opto-coupler from the circuit.Some problems of the new method of control and the design of transformer are analysed.Finally the experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method and the design.

Abstract:In this paper,a multiple output flyback converter which uses UC3842 as supply control IC is designed for the small vehicle auxiliary power supply.The technologies of high frequency AC-bus and distributed power source are adopted to solve the problems of multi-channel and separation output,to reduce the turn of transformer winding and to improve the power transmission efficiency.The internal circuit and characteristics are analyzed based on the prototype machine and the results about experimentation.The main process of the flyback transformer in practical design is listed.Consequently,the advantages of this converter at efficiency,volume,cost are presented.

Abstract:An auxiliary power supply for operation power module of power system was designed.A topology of dual switches' flyback converter was introduced and the operations principle was anaylazed.The characteristics of peak current control method and the design steps for calculation of the parameters were also presented.As demon prototype,a switching power supply of three-phase input and eight outputs was designed and built.The experimental and long-term-test results show that the topology of dual switches' flyback converter is very suitable for the applications of high-voltage input and multi-outputs.It is proved that the topology not only keeps the excellence of flyback converter,but also improves the converter's performance in high-voltage situation.

Abstract:This paper presents a multi-mode control scheme for a soft-switched flyback converter to achieve high efficiency and excellent load regulation over the entire load range. At heavy load, critical conduction mode with valley switching (CCMVS) is employed to realize soft switching so as to reduce turn-on loss of power switch as well as conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI). At light load, the converter operates in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) with valley switching and adaptive off-time control (AOT) to limit the switching frequency range and maintain load regulation. At extremely light load or in standby mode, burst mode operation is adopted to provide low power consumption through reducing both switching frequency and static power dissipation of the controller. The multi-mode control is implemented by an oscillator whose pulse duration is adjusted by output feedback. An accurate valley switching control circuit guarantees the minimum turn-on voltage drop of power switch. The prototype of the controller IC was fabricated in a 1.5-μm BiCMOS process and applied to a 310 V/20 V, 90 W flyback DC/DC converter circuitry. Experimental results showed that all expected functions were realized successfully. The flyback converter achieved a high efficiency of over 80% from full load down to 2.5 W, with the maximum reaching 88.8%, while the total power consumption in standby mode was about 300 mW.
An improved control scheme for buck PFC converter for high efficiency adapter application

Abstract:Buck Power Factor Correction (PFC) converter has attracted a lot of research interesting for its high efficiency at low input, low output voltage and cost reduction due to low voltage rating of bulky electrolytic capacitor, especially for high power density adapter application with stringent thermal constraints and efficiency requirement. However, the conventional CRM buck PFC converter usually suffers low PF and high peak current compared to the boost PFC because of the inherent dead angle of the input current. In order to meet the harmonics requirement and further improve its efficiency, this paper proposes an improved control scheme for CRM buck PFC converter. By optimizing the reference for the peak current, higher Power Factor and higher efficiency can be achieved at the same time. Experimental results from a 100W CRM Buck front-end PFC prototype verified the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. The efficiency of Buck PFC exceeds 95.8% across the entire line input range (90~265Vac) at full load, and the line current harmonics content can also meet the harmonic requirement.

Abstract:A novel forward-flyback multiple-output DC/DC converter in view of magamp technique is proposed in this paper. Windings coupled with the output filtering inductor of the forward converter compose the independent multiple outputs which operated in time sharing flyback fashion. Due to the PWM feedback control and the magamp feedback control, the regulation of main output and auxiliary output can be achieved respectively. It combines the characteristics of high efficiency of forward, low cost of flyback and magamp post regulation. The converter and its family Buck type flyback are suitable for use in occasion of differing greatly in power among multiple output for its simple structure, low cost, tight voltage regulation, and high efficiency. The operation principles, characters of the converter and optimum design of magamp is described and verified on a 132W two output experimental prototype .
Comparison of Dual Switch Flyback DC/DC Converters based on NCP1207 and UC3844

Abstract:Now the development of the power supply trends to high frequency,high efficiency and high definition.The circuit structure,operation principle and performance of dual switch flyback DC/DC converters based on NCP1207 and UC3844 are compared and verified.The result proves that a novel flyback converter using quasi-resonant technology with NCP1207 is developed.When the converter operates in discontinuous conduction mode(DCM),the switch can turn on atquasi-resonant valley by using the resonant between capacitor shunted to drain-source of switch and the leakage inductance of the transformer.The experimental results show that the efficiency of the converter based on NCP1207 can be two or three percents more than the converter based on UCC3844.

A Primary Control Strategy for Boost-Flyback Single-Stage PFC Converter

Abstract:This paper has analyzed the primary control method for a Boost-Flyback single stage power factor correction converter. Since the switch current contains both the input inductor current and flyback transformer current, the conventional primary control method for Flyback converter can not be applied. In this paper, two primary side control methods for Boost-Flyback single stage PFC converter are proposed and their control performance are also studied and compared. In order to achieve high power factor and high precision of output current, the parameters optimization methods are discussed in this paper based on different control methods, especially for the optimization of the inductance. The control method of variable frequency has a better performance on reducing the output ripple and increasing the PF.A prototype with 180~264V input and 32V/0.7A output is built to verify the analysis and the simulation.

Abstract:Five-level active neutral-point-clamped (5L-ANPC) converter is a newly emerging topology which can overcome the drawbacks of traditional diode-clamped and flying-capacitor multilevel converters. This paper introduces a transformer-less medium-voltage motor drive system consisting of two 5L-ANPC converters connected back-to-back (BTB). Both the rectifier and inverter are based on phase-disposition (PD) sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). A multi-objective optimization PWM control method based on zero-sequence voltage injection is presented in this paper. The neutral-point (NP) potential can be balanced by injecting proper zero-sequence voltages. In addition, by further limiting the region of the injected zero-sequence voltages, the series connected IGBTs can operate at fundamental frequency and the amplitude of common-mode voltage can be reduced to a quarter of the DC-link voltage. Experimental results are presented to verify the validity of this method.

Abstract:In this paper, a feedback compensator (FBC) and a Feedforward compensator (FFC) are proposed to construct a novel compensated peak current mode control pulse width modulation (CPC-PWM) for primary-side controlled flyback converters. Using the proposed FBC, the PWM duty cycle of an abnormal operating flyback converter would be descended to limit the output current for reducing power dissipation. Using the proposed FFC, the effect of delay time would be descended to reduce the over-flow current for increasing the current accuracy. In this paper, the operating principle and mathematical model are described and analyzed. Then, the component values are well designed to satisfy the electrical specifications. Finally, a prototype is designed and realized to access system performance. The experimental results show that the proposed CPC-PWM can validate in a wide input voltage range and output short conditions, which also has good current accuracy and reduces power dissipation by about 68%.
