Abstract:E-commerce is the practice of purchasing, selling, transferring, and exchanging goods, services, or information through the Internet, a computer, and/or other devices. With the development of e-commerce markets, fraud is increasingly reported. This study uses a crime script analysis to examine how customer-to-customer (C2C) fraud occurs on China’s online platforms with a particular focus on the online marketplace Baidu Tieba and Tencent QQ, a tool that allows customers to make contact and negotiate deals and payment methods. The findings demonstrate that C2C fraud develops through pre-operation, operation, finalization, and exit stages, sharing commonalities with other online identity fraud processes. Implications for policy and interventions are also discussed in regard to e-commerce fraud in China and elsewhere.

Abstract:The industry of cross-border electronic commerce (CBEC) has experienced rapid development in recent years, however it has also faced severe challenges concerning the managerial risks taking place across national borders. The aims of the study are two folds: first examine the effects of applying different risk mitigation strategies on the market performance of international online vendors (IOVs) and utilities of consumers; second explore whether consumers’ choices among vendors from different nations based on psychic distance are affected by the risk mitigation strategies of platforms or by the actual frequency of vendors making default moves. A dynamic simulation has been conducted based on four combinations of platform strategies determined by two dimensions of ex ante intervention and ex post investigation. The results indicate that (i) once increasing the frequency of ex post investigation of risk events, customers will suffer less default losses, and both IOVs and customers will gain more utilities; (ii) the profits of ordinary vendors will increase marginally when reducing the frequency of ex ante intervention of high-risk orders, causing a lower degree of shopping concentration; (iii) when platforms adopt risk mitigation strategies of more frequent intervention or higher investigation intensity toward IOVs, the psychic distances of consumers towards IOVs from the same nation and from relatively closer nations become closer.
Shing: A Conversational Agent to Alert Customers of Suspected Online-payment Fraud with Empathetical Communication Skills

Abstract:Alerting customers on suspected online-payment fraud and persuade them to terminate transactions is increasingly requested with the rapid growth of digital finance worldwide. We explored the feasibility of using a conversational agent (CA) to fulfill this request. Shing, a voice-based CA, proactively initializes and repairs the conversation with empathetical communication skills in order to alert customers when a suspected online-payment fraud is detected, collects important information for fraud scrutiny and persuades customers to terminate the transaction once the fraud is confirmed. We evaluated our system by comparing it with a rule-based CA with regards to customer response and perceptions in a real-world context where our systems took 144,795 phone calls in total in which 83,019 (57.3%) natural breakdowns happened. Results showed that more customers stopped risky transactions after conversing with Shing. They seemed more willing to converse with Shing for more dialogue turns and provide transaction details. Our work presents practical implications for the design of proactive CA.

Abstract:<p>The emerging use of modern technologies has not only benefited society but also attracted fraudsters and criminals to misuse the technology for financial benefits. Fraud over the Internet has increased dramatically, resulting in an annual loss of billions of dollars to customers and service providers worldwide. Much of such fraud directly impacts individuals, both in the case of browser-based and mobile-based Internet services, as well as when using traditional telephony services, either through landline phones or mobiles. It is important that users of the technology should be both informed of fraud, as well as protected from frauds through fraud detection and prevention systems. In this paper, we present the anatomy of frauds for different consumer-facing technologies from three broad perspectives - we discuss Internet, mobile and traditional telecommunication, from the perspectives of losses through frauds over the technology, fraud attack mechanisms and systems used for detecting and preventing frauds. The paper also provides recommendations for securing emerging technologies from fraud and attacks.</p>

Abstract:China's cross-border e-commerce industry has demonstrated stable and rapid development thanks to the implementation of appropriate policy support and the progressive establishment of e-commerce platforms. The industry's prosperity suggests unique advantages of cross-border e-commerce, which are a result of promoting industrial transformation and accelerating economic restructuring. Due to asymmetric information and insufficient data, little research has been conducted on the current status and the trends of the industry as well as the magnitude of risk in cross-border e-commerce. Using the cross-border e-commerce hosting service database of BizArk, the present study has constructed an index for China's export e-commerce prosperity and magnitude of risk which reveals that the industry: (i) generally presents a tendency of solid growth; (ii) has had a relatively stable situation for logistics facilitation but a drastic fluctuation in customs facilitation; (iii) has gradually shifted to competing for cheaper and more efficient marketing techniques as well as channels; and (iv) has experienced a remarkable amelioration of risk magnitude.

Abstract:The internet's convenience and anonymity have facilitated different types of covert fraud, resulting in economic, mental, and social harm to victims. Understanding why people are deceived and implementing appropriate interventions is critical for fraud reduction. Based on the Bayesian brain theory, individuals' mental states may be a key point in scam compliance and warning compliance. Fraud victims with different mental states may construct various hypotheses and explanations about the fraud they are exposed to, causing different cognition and behavior patterns. Therefore, we first conducted a semi-structured in-depth interview with online fraud victims to investigate the individual and social factors that affect victims' mental states. Grounded theory analysis showed five core factors influencing scam compliance: psychological traits, empirical factors, motivation, cognitive biases, and emotional imbalance. Based on our findings of psychological processes and deception's influential factors, we then designed warnings to inform victims of fraud, particularly for those involving novel types of scams. Tested on a real-life setting, our designed warnings effectively enhanced warning compliance, allowing more fraud victims to avoid financial losses.

Abstract:The product comments in e-commerce circumstance has a strong guidance role on customers, therefore the merchants will usually falsify bogus comments to defraud customers. In order to monitor such behaviors of merchants, we transform the comments of the same product from different merchants to eigenvector by the way of affective computing, then compare it with the vector derived from the comments on the third-party professional assessment and test websites as well as on the microblog, and identify those vectors with big deviation degree, that means the product of those merchants are possibly in fraudulence. Experiment proves that the system can recognize fraudulent merchants.

Abstract:Different forms of cybercrimes, ranging from email spam and click fraud to the most sophisticated underground economy, have been studied extensively. Fraud and misconduct in legitimate Internet economy, however, have not received sufficient attention, even though potential damages may not be as severe as regular cybercrimes. In this paper, we have performed the first in-depth empirical investigation of fraud and misconduct in legitimate Internet businesses by collecting 6.6 million customer complaints, which were filed over 45 months by 2.7 million customers against 117 thousand merchants on one of the largest customer complaint platforms in the world, along with more than 13 million customer-uploaded images as photographic evidence. We characterized the complaints in terms of merchants, main issues, desired remedy, amount of money involved, customer ratings, and etc. Most importantly, we were able to uncover various fraud and misconduct in different Internet businesses, some of which should have caught law enforcement's attention. The sum of the amount of money involved in these complaints is 5.4 billion US dollars. We also investigated the privacy inference of the images, and found that the image content could disclose an unexpected amount of customers' personal information.

Abstract:In recent years, there have been frequent cases of telecom network fraud. Because cunning crooks have long extended their claws to the pure campus. "Post-00" college students grow up in the Internet era and like to participate in online activities and online part-time jobs. In order to prevent college students from falling into the crisis of telecommunications network fraud, although colleges and universities have repeatedly reminded them of security education, the effectiveness of education still needs to be improved. Among them, the fake identity fraud encountered by Xiao Chen is a typical high-incidence telecom network fraud case. By analyzing the causes of cases, the case handling process of ideological and political workers is expounded, and the case reflection and enlightenment are summarized, which provides effective reference ideas for the prevention and control of campus online fraud.
