Abstract:Three terms, “Waterman's T-matrix method”, “extended boundary condition method (EBCM)”, and “null field method”, have been interchangeable in the literature to indicate a method based on surface integral equations to calculate the T-matrix. Unlike the previous method, the invariant imbedding method (IIM) calculates the T-matrix by the use of a volume integral equation. In addition, the standard separation of variables method (SOV) can be applied to compute the T-matrix of a sphere centered at the origin of the coordinate system and having a maximal radius such that the sphere remains inscribed within a nonspherical particle. This study explores the feasibility of a numerical combination of the IIM and the SOV, hereafter referred to as the IIM+SOV method, for computing the single-scattering properties of nonspherical dielectric particles, which are, in general, inhomogeneous. The IIM+SOV method is shown to be capable of solving light-scattering problems for large nonspherical particles where the standard EBCM fails to converge. The IIM+SOV method is flexible and applicable to inhomogeneous particles and aggregated nonspherical particles (overlapped circumscribed spheres) representing a challenge to the standard superposition T-matrix method. The IIM+SOV computational program, developed in this study, is validated against EBCM simulated spheroid and cylinder cases with excellent numerical agreement (up to four decimal places). In addition, solutions for cylinders with large aspect ratios, inhomogeneous particles, and two-particle systems are compared with results from discrete dipole approximation (DDA) computations, and comparisons with the improved geometric-optics method (IGOM) are found to be quite encouraging.

Abstract:The extended boundary condition method (EBCM) and invariant imbedding method (IIM) are two fundamentally different T-matrix methods for the solution of light scattering by nonspherical particles. The standard EBCM is very efficient but encounters a loss of precision when the particle size is large, the maximum size being sensitive to the particle aspect ratio. The IIM can be applied to particles in a relatively large size parameter range but requires extensive computational time due to the number of spherical layers in the particle volume discretization. A numerical combination of the EBCM and the IIM (hereafter, the EBCM+IIM) is proposed to overcome the aforementioned disadvantages of each method. Even though the EBCM can fail to obtain the T-matrix of a considered particle, it is valuable for decreasing the computational domain (i.e., the number of spherical layers) of the IIM by providing the initial T-matrix associated with an iterative procedure in the IIM. The EBCM+IIM is demonstrated to be more efficient than the IIM in obtaining the optical properties of large size parameter particles beyond the convergence limit of the EBCM. The numerical performance of the EBCM+IIM is illustrated through representative calculations in spheroidal and cylindrical particle cases.
Flexible Implementation of the Particle Shape and Internal Inhomogeneity in the Invariant Imbedding T-matrix Method.

Abstract:We report a new implementation of the invariant imbedding T-matrix (IITM) method based on a discrete spherical grid approach for representing the particle shape and internal inhomogeneity. The new version of the IITM (referred to as the IITM-discrete) improves the flexibility of the IITM-especially for inhomogeneous particles. It is much more convenient for specifying the particle morphology in the electromagnetic wave scattering simulations. Particle shape is represented by a series of discrete spherical layers ranging from the inscribed sphere to the circumscribed sphere. Spherical layers are discretized by the centroidal Voronoi tessellation (CVT) approach. The procedure of computing the U-matrix (the only shape-dependent module in the T-matrix program) is simplified upon using the gridded particle shape and refractive index information saved in an external file. The grid resolution is a key factor that determines the numerical accuracy and computational cost. Numerical tests of IITM-discrete show its compatibility with other light scattering methods. Using IITM-discrete, we found that the internal inhomogeneity could have large impact on dust optical properties.
Analytical Jacobians of Single Scattering Optical Properties Using the Invariant Imbedding T-matrix Method.

Abstract:Integrated and differential optical properties of a single particle, such as the scattering, absorption, and extinction cross sections, single scattering albedo, asymmetry factor, and scattering phase matrix, are derived from electromagnetic scattering theory. This process depends on microphysical inputs which include particle shape, refractive index, aspect ratio, and size parameter. In this work, we use the invariant imbedding T-matrix method (IITM) to derive analytic expressions for Jacobians of these optical properties with respect to the input parameters. These IITM-derived Jacobians for spheroids, cylinders, and hexagonal prisms are validated by comparison with results calculated with the extended boundary condition method (EBCM) and further validated using finite-difference estimates. We examine the dependencies of these Jacobians as functions of the input microphysical parameters, focusing again on spheroids, cylinders, and hexagonal prisms.

Abstract:The invariant imbedding T-matrix method has been recognized as one of the rigorous computational tools to simulate the light scattering by atmospheric nonspherical particles after the efficient implementation by L. Bi and P. Yang. Compared with the T-matrix model based on the Extended Boundary Condition Method ("EBCM"), it is suitable for the light scattering simulation of particles with any shapes. However, since the T-matrix must be updated in each iterative process, its computational efficiency is relatively lower than EBCM, especially for the particles with large sizes and large aspect ratios. To this end, an efficient realization scheme of the IIM T-matrix method is proposed in this paper. The principle and the structure of our IIM T-matrix code is firstly introduced, and then the symmetric properties of the U-matrix (an important matrix in the IIM T-matrix method) is derived; to simplify the iteration of T-matrix calculation, the implicit matrix inversion scheme is also proposed. To validate the effectiveness of these improvements, the computational efficiency and accuracy is systematically investigated for the particles with different shapes and sizes. The simulation results indicate that the computational time is reduced notably after the model is improved by the symmetry of U-matrix and the implicit matrix inversion scheme, where for the spheroid with (a, b) = (2.5 mu m, 3.0 mu m) at lambda=0.5 mu m (the particle is treated as complex geometries without any symmetry), the computational efficiency is improved by nearly 40%. Excellent agreement is also achieved between the scattering parameters obtained by the IIM T-matrix method and the well-test scattering models (such as BECM, DDASCAT, MRTD and IGOA, etc.), indicating that the IIM T-matrix method can simulate the light scattering by nonspherical particles effectively. Abstract:A new formulation of the Debye series based on the Riccati-differential equations was developed to compute electromagnetic wave scattering by non-spherical particles. In this formulation, the T-matrix was expanded in terms of the Debye series. The zeroth-order term, which corresponds to a combination of diffraction and external reflection, is given by unity minus the external reflection matrix. The higher-order terms are generated from the transmission matrix from the medium to the particle, the internal reflection matrix within the particle and the transmission matrix from the particle to the medium. We demonstrate that the aforementioned four reflection-transmission matrices satisfy the Riccati-differential equations, which can be numerically solved by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The present algorithm can be applied to generalized convex non-spherical particles. The differential equations were analytically validated in the case of a homogeneous sphere. Representative results were given in the case of spheroids. The impacts of the Debye series with various orders on the optical properties of spheroids were revealed with significant details.
Scattering of 1-D Periodic Scatterer and Asymptotic Comparison Using the Many-Body Iterative T-Matrix Method

Abstract:The many-body iterative T-matrix (MBIT) method is based on the T-matrix method and focuses on scatterers with large aspect ratios. In this study, the MBIT method is extended so that it can be applied to an infinite scatterer with a 1-D periodic finite structure. A semi-analytical solution of infinite scatterers is obtained. In addition, the MBIT method is theoretically extended to include scatterers without axial rotational symmetry. The direct validation of the present method is performed by comparing the analytic solution for an infinite cylinder and the numerically accurate discrete dipole approximation method whereas indirect validation is conducted by using asymptotic solutions. Furthermore, the study also demonstrates that scattering properties of infinite scatterers can be used as a substitute for finite scatterers with large aspect ratios.

Abstract:The invariant imbedding T-matrix method (II-TM) is employed to simulate the optical properties of normal biconcave and deformed red blood cells (RBCs). The phase matrix elements of a RBC model computed with the II-TM are compared with their counterparts computed with the discrete-dipole approximation (DDA) method. As expected, the DDA results approach the II-TM results with an increase in the number of dipoles per incident wavelength. Computationally, the II-TM is faster than the DDA when multiple RBC orientations are considered. For a single orientation, the DDA is comparable with or even faster than the II-TM because the DDA efficiently converges for optically soft particles; however, the DDA method demands significantly more computer memory than the II-TM. After the applicability of the II-TM is numerically confirmed, a comparison is conducted of the optical properties of oxygenated and deoxygenated RBCs and of normal and deformed RBCs. The spectral variations of RBCs' optical properties are investigated in the wavelength range from 0.25 to 1.0 μm. Furthermore, the statistically averaged phase matrix of spheres and biconcave RBCs are compared. Conducted numerical simulations suggest the applicability of the II-TM for the inverse light scattering analysis and radiative transfer simulations in blood.

Abstract:The scattering properties of a single particle consist of scattering, absorption, and extinction cross-sectionsCross-sections, single scattering albedo, asymmetry factor, and scattering phase matrix. The rigorous and approximate single-scattering methods must be together employed to obtain the scattering properties of non-spherical particles from small to large sizes. The invariant-imbedding T-matrix method (IITM)Invariant-imbedding T-matrix method (IITM) is a semi-analytical algorithm, which can rigorously calculate the scattering properties. The physical-geometric optics method (PGOM)Physical-geometric optics method (PGOM) approximately uses the beam-tracing technique in the near-field and accurately maps the near-filed to the far-field. The combination of the two methods can be used to obtain the scattering properties of non-spherical particles for all sizes. In this chapter, the scattering properties are analytically linearized with respect to the scattering parameters such as the real and imaginary parts of refractive index, effective radius, and aspect ratio based on the IITM and the PGOM. The linearized IITM and PGOM are verified by the finite-differenceFinite-difference (FD) method using the shapes such as spheroids, cylinders, and hexagonal prisms. Hexagonal prisms are further used to test applicability and convergence of the two linearized algorithms. The linearized scattering phase matrix is compared at the intermediate sizes between the IITM and the PGOM. Other linearized scattering properties are compared at certain size ranges to test the consistency of the two linearized algorithms. The technique details and potential applicability are also discussed in the chapter.
Accurate Simulation of the Optical Properties of Atmospheric Ice Crystals with the Invariant Imbedding T-matrix Method

Abstract:The invariant imbedding T-matrix method (II-TM) is employed to compute the optical properties of randomly oriented ice crystals of various shapes including hexagonal columns, hollow columns, droxtals, bullet rosettes and aggregates. The II-TM is shown to be numerically stable and capable of obtaining the single-scattering properties of hexagonal ice crystals with size parameters up to 150. The 22° and 46° halo peaks in the phase function of compact hexagonal ice crystals begin to emerge at a size parameter of approximately 80 and tend to become insensitive to particle size as the corresponding size parameter approaches 150. Furthermore, the II-TM solutions are shown to be in agreement with their counterparts based on the discrete dipole approximation (DDA) method and the pseudo-spectral time-domain (PSTD) method. In addition, the accuracy of the improved geometric-optics method (IGOM) is examined for randomly oriented hexagonal ice crystal cases over a wide size-parameter range from the resonant to geometric-optics regimes. The II-TM is also used to study the effects of particle surface roughness and internal inclusions on the single-scattering properties of ice particles.
Improvement and Application of Linearized Invariant Imbedding T-matrix Scattering Method

Abstract:The Jacobians of particle scattering properties with respect to aspect ratio and effective radius (re) using the invariant imbedding T-matrix method (IITM) are significantly improved by circumventing the diver-gence of derivatives. The effective radius re is used in three definitions, which are rV, the equal-volume spherical radius, rS, the equal-surface-area spherical radius, and rVS, the ratio of three times the volume to surface area, respectively. The improved IITM and their Jacobians are applied to discuss the discrep-ancies between the three different definitions. The analytical Jacobians with respect to aspect ratios and effective radii associated with three effective radii are verified using the finite-difference method. Jaco-bians with respect to different effective radii are proportional since the ratios of different effective radii are only related to the aspect ratios. Jacobians with respect to aspect ratios are extremely sensitive to the definitions of effective radius. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
On the Far Field in the Lorenz–Mie Theory and T-matrix Formulation

Abstract:The far field within the context of the Lorenz–Mie theory and the T-matrix formulation is usually expressed on the basis of the asymptotic properties of vector spherical waves. The radiation condition is taken into account by employing proper vector spherical functions as the expansion basis of the scattered field. The asymptotic behavior of the Hankel function is obtained from differential equations. The asymptotic far field can also be obtained from the Kirchhoff surface integral equation, in which the radiation condition has been implemented when it is derived from the Maxwell equations. This note is to present an explicit establishment of the relationship between the asymptotic far field and the near field in the Lorenz–Mie theory and the T-matrix formulation through the Kirchhoff surface integral.

Abstract:The paper presents a method for calculation of non-spherical particle T-matrices based on the volume integral equation and the spherical vector wave function basis, and relies on the Generalized Source Method rationale. The developed method appears to be close to the invariant imbedding approach, and the derivations aims at intuitive demonstration of the calculation scheme. In parallel calculation of single columns of T-matrix is considered in detail, and it is shown that this way not only has a promising potential of parallelization but also yields an almost zero power balance for purely dielectric particles.

Abstract:For a particle with rotational symmetry, the T-matrix is a powerful method for calculating the scattering properties. However, as the aspect ratio of the particle (defined as the ratio of the length of the rotational axis to the maximum dimension perpendicular to the rotational axis) deviates further from unity, the conventional T-matrix method becomes less efficient. Furthermore, when the aspect ratio is significantly large, the T-matrix algorithm diverges due to limited digital precision in numerical simulation. In this study, a many-body iterative T-matrix method (MIBT) is employed to calculate the scattering properties of a prolate particle (i.e., a particle with an aspect ratio larger than unity). The particle is divided into a number of sub-particles for which the scattering properties can be solved with the T-matrix method. The scattering properties of the original particle are acquired by adding the contributions of the artificially divided sub-particles and their interactions. Furthermore, the MBIT method is applicable to prolate particles with the sub-particles having the same or different refractive indices.

Abstract:The linearized invariant-imbedding T-matrix method (LIITM) and linearized physical-geometric optics method (LPGOM) were applied on regular hexagonal prisms from small to large sizes to obtain the scattering properties and their partial derivatives. T-matrices and their derivatives from the LIITM are presented and discussed in the expansion order, where the minor diagonal elements are dominant. The simulation results of single-scattering properties and their corresponding linearization from both methods are compared. The mutual agreements can be treated as further verification of both linearized methods. Using extinction efficiency as the criterion, the LPGOM are convergent at the LIITM for the particle size parameter larger than 130 with a relative difference of less than 1%, with errors of about 3% and 5% for particle sizes of 50 and 30, respectively. The capability and convergence of the LIITM and LPGOM are discussed in detail based on linearized properties.
A numerically stable T-matrix method for acoustic scattering by nonspherical particles with large aspect ratios and size parameters

Abstract:We consider a two-part method for computing the acoustic scattering T-matrix of a three dimensional particle. The first part involves accurately computing the far fields by solving a number of particular scattering problems. The second part calculates the T-matrix from these far fields using the Fourier transform over the sphere. The two-part method was first introduced in Ganesh and Hawkins [J. Comput. Appl. Math. 234, 1702-1709]. The focus of this work is to demonstrate the numerical stability and physical correctness of the two-part method for scattering by nonspherical particles with large aspect ratios and size parameters that are at the upper limit of numerical stability for the current state-of-the-art algorithm. The numerical stability of the method is attributed to elimination of the Hankel functions by working with the far field. The numerical experiments use our recently developed open-source software package (TMATROM3) that implements the two-part method.

Abstract:Several recent developments point to the fact that rational maps from n-punctured spheres to the null cone of D-dimensional momentum space provide a natural language for describing the scattering of massless particles in D dimensions. In this paper we identify and study equations relating the kinematic invariants s(ab) and the puncture locations sigma(c), which we call the scattering equations. We provide an inductive algorithm in the number of particles for their solutions and prove a remarkable property which we call Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) orthogonality. In a nutshell, KLT orthogonality means that "Parke-Taylor" vectors constructed from the solutions to the scattering equations are mutually orthogonal with respect to the KLT bilinear form. We end with comments on possible connections to gauge theory and gravity amplitudes in any dimension and to the high-energy limit of string theory amplitudes.

Abstract:Based on the generalized Lorenz Mie theory, the light scattering of randomly distributed spherical particles in the Gaussian beam is investigated. Three different sampling regions are defined in order to determine the distribution range of random particles, and then the uniform sampling of multi-particles is conducted, respectively. Moreover, an average method based on the statistical average is proposed to represent the scattered field of multi-spheres. Simulation experiments indicate that fairly reasonable results of the total scattering intensity for the multi-spheres can be obtained with the proposed method, and it provides a simple, reliable and efficient method to reproduce the scattering properties of randomly distributed particles illuminated by the Gaussian beam.

Abstract:This paper calculates light scattering by a spherical water particle containing densely packed inclusions at a visible wavelength 0.55 μm by a combination of ray-tracing and Monte Carlo techniques. While the individual reflection and refraction events at the outer boundary of a sphere particle are considered by a ray-tracing program, the Monte Carlo routine simulates internal scattering processes. The main advantage of this method is that the shape of the particle can be arbitrary, and multiple scattering can be considered in the internal scattering processes. A dense-medium light-scattering theory based on the introduction of the static structure factor is used to calculate the phase function and asymmetry parameters for densely packed inclusions. Numerical results of the single scattering characteristics for a sphere containing multiple densely packed inclusions are given.
