Abstract:A large amount of wastewater will come into being in the process of brewery production. It is required that the wastewater must be discharged after it has reached the discharge standard or it must be reused after it has reached the reuse standard. Since the sources of brewery wastewater are different,its water quality is different obviously,which is the base of reuse. The brewery production technologies and the situation that wastewater brought about are introduced. Some new types of wastewater reuse technologies are summarized,mainly including membrane filtration,membrane bioreactor,low-temperature plasma and electrochemical methods. Their advantages and disadvantages are summarized. Their application to the reuse of wastewater is looked forward.

Abstract:Membrane bioreactor(MBR) is an efficient technology,combining biological treatment with membrane separation process.Being widely used in various fields of wastewater treatment,MBR holds good advantages over traditional ways.The characteristics of different kinds of novel membrane bioreactors are investigated and the technological structure parameters of MBR concerning industrial application in wastewater treatment are studied.The key factors in MBR operation facing current challenges are emphatically analyzed.Furthermore,the cause formation and controlling measures of membrane fouling are discussed.The future development of novel MBR in wastewater treatment is prospected.

Abstract:The quality and quantity of dyeing and printing wastewater have changed significantly because of the development of dyeing and printing industry. The current situation of dyeing and printing wastewater in China is analyzed. The improvement of biotechnology,such as aerobic biotechnology,anaerobic biotechnology and anaerobic-aerobic biotechnology for dyeing and printing wastewater treatment is presented. The progress of new biotechnology,such as bio-augmented and immobilized microorganism is reviewed.

Abstract:Concerns about environmental safety have led to strict regulations on the discharge of final brewery effluents into water bodies. Brewery wastewater contains huge amounts of organic compounds that can cause environmental pollution. The microalgae wastewater treatment method is an emerging environmentally friendly biotechnological process. Microalgae grow well in nutrient-rich wastewater by absorbing organic nutrients and converting them into useful biomass. The harvested biomass can be used as animal feed, biofertilizer, and an alternative energy source for biodiesel production. This review discusses conventional and current brewery wastewater treatment methods, and the application and potential of microalgae in brewery wastewater treatment. The study also discusses the benefits as well as challenges associated with microalgae brewery and other industrial wastewater treatments.

Abstract:The anaerobic biotreatment of the strong wastewater from the brewery factory of Cameroon was carried out at ambient temperature to investigate the feasibility and the parameters.The results showed that the local temperature,averagely 22.6℃,was high enough to run the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket(UASB) reactor,but some measures should be taken to reduce the diurnal temperature fluctuation.The efficiency of combined treatment of saccharafication wastewater,fermentation wastewater and beer filtration wastewater was better than that of individual treatment.The suitable parameters for the combined treatment were:influent COD concentration less than 11000 mg/L,volumetric COD loading rate less than 12.50g/(L*d),hydraulic retention time longer than 1 day.Under such a set of conditions,COD removal rate of higher than 89%,volumetric COD removal rate of 11.76g/(L*d)and volumetric biogas production of 4.06L/(L*d)could be achieved.

Abstract:Brewery—a water-intensive industry—produces a significant amount of wastewater, requiring effective treatment before discharge to the terrestrial or aquatic ecosystem. The treatment efficacy of the single/two-stage membrane aerated biofilm bioreactor (MABR) coupled with a coagulation/flocculation (C/F) preprocess for high-strength brewery wastewater was investigated. The combined system effectively removed COD (89.1 ± 4.2%), nitrogen (66.7 ± 13.5%), and phosphorus (91.1 ± 9.5%) for different influent loads and operational conditions. The C/F process significantly removed major loads of the subsequent MABR with a removal efficacy of 38.1%-60.8%, 23.5%-55.3%, and 76.8%-90.1%, respectively, for COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus. In addition, MABR exhibited a high treatment threshold for COD (> 3400 mg COD L-1) and achieved a COD removal rate ranging from 18 g m-2 d-1 to 64 g m-2 d-1. Next-generation sequencing revealed the dominance of MABR biofilm with three different taxa (Bacteroidia, Actinobacteria, and Clostridia) with a cumulative relative abundance of 52.9 ± 19.9%. Among all biofilms, biosynthesis of amino acids (5.1% to 5.9%) and carbon metabolism (4.3% to 4.6%) were dominant KEGG pathways. Bacterial compositions and biofilm functionality were strongly depended on airflow and COD loading rates, while air flow rate was a crucial regulation factor in real-world applications. Altogether, this study demonstrated the potential implementation of MABR coupled with physicochemical processes for efficient removals of COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus from industrial wastewaters (with high sugar contents), such as brewery, starch, and dairy wastewater.

Abstract:The wastewaters of food industry are rich in organic matter,and their direct discharges may do harm to the environment.There have recently been considerable concerns about and development in biological technologies to treat food industrial wastewaters.Presentation of those technologies was given,including hydrolysis- aerobic treatment technology,sequencing batch reactor activated sludge process and anaerobic sequencing batch reactor technique,upflow anaerobic sludge blanket method,anaerobic baffled reactor,rotating biological contactor,microbial fuel cell,membrane bioreactor,and etc.Other relevant combined technologies were also introduced,and the prospect of the developmental orientation of food industrial wastewater treatment technologies was proposed as well.

Abstract:The scope of this theoretical study is to investigate the concept of biorefinery applied to the use of brewery wastewater as feedstock for bioconversions for lactic acid production using lactic acid bacteria (LAB), while examining the theoretical design, development, and costing of brewery wastewater treatment plant within the scope of wastewater recovery and reuse as formulated waste-derived nutrient media-assimilated effluents. Beer is the fifth of the most consumed alcoholic beverage in the world, nowadays, with well-established large production sites across the world, while its wastewater generation for breweries for example in China, reaching 300 million m3/year. The system design is based on sedimentation and membrane technology, within the scope of removal of pollutants that would be resulting in the generation of relatively abundant inexpensive liquid feedstock able to be recycled to produce high-value chemicals such as lactic acid while reducing the carbon footprint of the fermentation and reducing waste disposal.

Abstract:<p>Biochar is a promising agent for wastewater treatment, soil remediation, and gas storage and separation. This review summarizes recent research development on biochar production and applications with a focus on the application of biochar technology in wastewater treatment. Different technologies for biochar production, with an emphasis on pre-treatment of feedstock and post treatment, are succinctly summarized. Biochar has been extensively used as an adsorbent to remove toxic metals, organic pollutants, and nutrients from wastewater. Compared to pristine biochar, engineered/designer biochar generally has larger surface area, stronger adsorption capacity, or more abundant surface functional groups (SFG), which represents a new type of carbon material with great application prospects in various wastewater treatments. As the first of its kind, this critical review emphasizes the promising prospects of biochar technology in the treatment of various wastewater including industrial wastewater (dye, battery manufacture, and dairy wastewater), municipal wastewater, agricultural wastewater, and stormwater. Future research on engineered/designer biochar production and its field-scale application is discussed. Based on the review, it can be concluded that biochar technology represents a new, cost effective, and environmentally-friendly solution for the treatment of wastewater.</p>

Abstract:Industries play an important role in the economic growth of any nation, whereas they release pollutants, which impact our environment seriously. Owing to the rapid climate change and global warming, our earth is searching for different sustainable energy technologies. Microbial fuel cell technology is emerging as one of the most versatile sustainable energy technology, with their ability to tap the energy stored in the wastewater and convert it directly into electrical energy. Though MFC research is still in its nascent stage, its theoretical superiority makes it a unique technology, which can be developed into a self‐sufficient system for wastewater treatment in the near future. Brewery industries consume large quantities of water for beer production and hence release large quantities of wastewater. The chemical energy stored in the brewery wastewater could be converted into useful bioelectricity by MFC technology compared to other traditional wastewater treatment technologies, which are all energy intensive. Brewery wastewater, rich in biodegradable organic matter with their non‐toxic nature, makes it a highly suitable substrate for MFC. It is one of the few substrates that have made it to pilot‐scale studies worldwide. This study aims to review the microbial fuel cells with brewery wastewater as their substrate. It will elaborate the different configurations of MFCs employed for brewery wastewater so far, their power producing ability and wastewater treatment efficiency. The critical factors that influence these MFC systems will also be discussed. Finally, this article also identifies and suggests different strategies to improve the performance of such MFC systems.

Abstract:The A/O process has been applied to the treatment of beer wastewater with high concentration.The results show that the average removal rates of CODCr,BOD5 and SS have reached 88.7%-92.8%,90.3%-95.4% and 86.2%-90.0%,respectively,which met the requirements of discharge standard of pollutants for beer industry.It is characterised by simple process,short HRT,wide adaptive range of water quality,efficient organism degradability,no marsh gas,and little sludge bulking.

Abstract:<p>Nowadays, traditional Chinese medicine plays an important role in curing many diseases, and its market expands quickly due to the potential great profits it can bring. To be an attractive industry, both economic and environmental aspects should be considered. As wastewater is usually generated from traditional Chinese medicine processing and utilization, its treatment is one of the hot research topics in environmental engineering currently. Many technologies can be applied for the treatment of this wastewater, but the technical background and performance vary greatly especially for different kinds of wastewater. In this situation, a systematical and comprehensive summary for the development of these technologies is necessary. In this review article, the sources of wastewater from the processing and utilization of traditional Chinese medicine are introduced firstly to show where this wastewater comes from. And then, the recent advances on the technologies for the treatment of this wastewater are introduced in detail to show what technologies can be applied. At last, the future outlook for the development of these treatment technologies is given to discuss how to fulfill their industrial application. Overall, this review article can present some important information for building a clean and sustainable traditional Chinese medicine industry.</p>

Abstract:Alcohol wastewater presents challenges such as high pollutant concentration and salinity , which can lead to environmental degradation when directly discharged. Due to their cost-effectiveness and environmentally-friendly features, biological technologies have gained widespread application in alcohol wastewater management. These technologies can be categorized into conventional technology (CT), anaerobic digestion (AD), and functional bacteria and microalgae technology (BMT). In this review, we examine their application performance, microbial mechanisms, potential pollutants, and future outlook. The results are as follows: 1) AD and BMT show greater potential than CT for pollutant recycling. However, salinity reduction needs more attention. 2) While a substantial amount of microbial information has been revealed, there is still a lack of understanding regarding the symbiotic interactions among microorganisms or between microorganism and microalgae under conditions of high salinity and pollutant concentration. Additionally, vital microbial mechanisms such as gene enrichment, driving-factor networks, and enzyme activity characteristics remain insufficiently explored. 3) Aerobic technologies release N 2 O, while anaerobic technologies emit CH 4 . To control greenhouse gas emissions, optimizing the winemaking process, integrating constructed wetlands, and utilizing alcohol wastewater as a carbon source are suggested. Real-time monitoring is essential to prevent disinfection byproduct accumulation and high-concentration discharge. 4) Future prospects include high-value utilization of AD substrates, cost reduction, deeper understanding of BMT mechanisms, and improved detection methods based on epidemiological analysis. This work emphasizes resource reuse, prevention and control of potential pollutants in alcohol wastewater, and proposes new insights for detection methods.

Abstract:The brewing industry generates a large amount of secondary material resources, namely: excess brewer's yeast, malt grain, malt sprouts, grain waste, protein sludge and a large amount of wastewater with varying degrees of organic pollution. These wastes contain a complex of nutrients, minerals and biologically active substances. Some of them (brewer's yeast, malt grain) are used as feed additives to the diet of farm animals as part of compound feed or in their native form. The brewing industry is a branch of food industry with a high degree of water consumption and, accordingly, a large amount of wastewater generated in the production process. Wastewater from the brewing industry belongs to the category of highly polluted, therefore, for their effective cleaning, it is necessary to use suitable and economically beneficial technologies. Substances dissolved in water cannot be filtered or precipitated using coagulants, removed using flotation, etc. Some of the impurities, for example, proteins, can be remo ved by physical and chemical methods, but the main part of them is in the solution. Effective cleaning is possible only if complex compounds are destroyed directly in the wastewater. Existing cleaning technologies using physical and chemical methods are imperfect because they have low cleaning rates. The best option for brewery wastewater treatment technology is the use of biotechnological cleaning methods. Such methods include methane fermentation. Methane fermentation is an anaerobic biochemical process that occurs under the influence of microorganisms of the genus Methanobacterium. This process leads to a significant reduction in the level of sewage pollution. The final products of methane fermentation are biogas and microbial protein with a high content of essential aminoacids.
