Abstract:Aiming at single vector hydrophone, the parameter estimation methods, such as estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) and etc., are used for histogram statistics; and multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm based on single vector hydrophone is presented. Meanwhile, the power spectrum formula, half-power beamwidth (HPBW) formula for beam-forming and the Craomér-Rao bound (CRB) of directional performance for various combinations of pressure and particle velocity are introduced. Theoretical analysis and experiment results show that the histogram statistics using ESPRIT can obtain more comprehensive information; MUSIC can achieve better resolution than minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) and also can be realized in real time; the HPBW of MVDR decreases as the SNR increases, while the HPBW of conventional beam-forming (CBF) has a limitation of 131.06°, and both of them are only related to SNR; acoustic energy flux method and etc. are suitable for the cases of high SNR, while the directional accuracy of beam-forming and subspace methods can still approach to the theoretic lower bound even under low SNR condition; the estimation errors for the three power spectrum estimation algorithms are equal; and all of the algorithms can be applied to real time system as the time cost is low.
A High Resolution Bearing Estimation Method Based on Sparse Reconstruction

Abstract:Resolving closely spaced sources is an important goal of source localization.In this paper,we present a high resolution method for direction-of-arrival(DOA) estimation based on sparse reconstruction algorithms.We establish the system equations based on the data correlation matrix,which increases the ratio of measurements to sparsity(RMS) and reduces the problem's dimensionality to the minimum.We impose the l1-norm as the sparsity penalty namely min l1-norm optimization which can be solved efficiently using convex optimization algorithms.Furthermore,the local grid refinement method is adopted to increase grid accuracy and reduce computational load.Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness and near optimality of our proposed method versus other existing methods.
High resolution DOA estimation based on generalized oblique projection

Abstract:To solve the problem of direction of arrival (DOA)estimation,generalized oblique projection op-erators are constructed to cancellincident signals coming from undesired directions.Since the signals impinging on the array may have different power,one kind of weighting factor is used to balance the height of the spactial spectrum adaptively.Through synchronously suppressing interference and implementing spatial spectrum esti-mation,a high resolution of the source’s DOA parameters is realized and the phenomenon that the peaks of weak signals are covered by strong ones is avoided.Both the theoretical analyses and the numerical simulation experiments indicate that the proposed approach has good robustness against direction finding of signals,espe-cially the weak sources,with distinct power.The bad influences introduced by the signals’power can be over-come by the proposed approach,and a high resolution of signals’DOA parameters can be effectively achieved with different incident angles.What’s more,the standard deviations of the estimated DOAs are asymptotically close to the corresponding Cramer-Rao bound along with the increased snapshots and signal to noise ratio.

Abstract:In this article, we propose two direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation methods to further improve the resolution and performance of subspace-based algorithms. While most subspace-based algorithms employ either noise or signal subspaces, we utilize the signal and noise subspaces jointly. First, we project the steering vectors to the estimated signal and noise subspaces respectively to obtain the projection vectors, then, by investigating the numerical characteristics behind the inner products between the steering vectors and the estimated eigenvectors of the sample covariance matrix, an initial estimator is proposed based on the multiplication of elements of the projection vectors instead of the summation. Though the initial estimator achieves higher resolution than most existing subspace-based methods, the appearance of pseudo peaks, especially in high SNR, may affect the estimation accuracy. By analyzing the main elements in the initial objective function that cause pseudo peaks, two improved algorithms incorporating element summation are proposed to balance the resolution capacity and estimation accuracy, which are especially suitable for small sample size, low SNR and closely spaced sources. The numerical simulations verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:Recent decades have seen substantial research into analytical performance analysis of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithms, revealing various statistical properties. However, many analyses fail to fully uncover insights into performance even for specific cases. This paper presents additional performance analysis of several subspace-based DOA estimation algorithms, using highly compact and simplified mean squared error (MSE) formulas for different algorithms, including an extension to the spatial smoothing scheme. All statistics are expressed in terms of physical parameters, fully revealing the relationships between array structures and DOA estimation performance.

Abstract:Computationally efficient methods for super-resolution direction of arrival (DOA)estimation aim to reduce the complexity of conventional techniques,to economize on the costs of systems and to enhance the ro-bustness of DOA estimators against array geometries and other environmental restrictions,which has been an important topic in the field.According to the theory and elements of the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm and the primary derivations from MUSIC,state-of-the-art efficient super-resolution DOA estimators are classified into five different types.These five types of approaches reduce the complexity by real-valued com-putation,beam-space transformation,fast subspace estimation,rapid spectral search,and no spectral search, respectively.With such a classification,comprehensive overviews of each kind of efficient methods are given and numerical comparisons among these estimators are also conducted to illustrate their advantages.Future develop-ment trends of efficient algorithms for super-resolution DOA estimates are finally predicted with basic require-ments of real-world applications.

Abstract:A novel direction-of-arrival estimation method based on the time-modulated array is proposed and verified. Long and short baselines are exploited to improve the accuracy of direction finding, in the meantime, to distinguish the true angle from the ambiguous ones. The idea is derived from the direction-finding method based on the phase interferometer, in which multibaselines are used to implement high-accuracy and unambiguous direction finding. The proposed method is analyzed in theory, and numeric simulations are provided to verify its effectiveness.

Abstract:In this paper, the algorithm relation and algorithm expression of beam-space direction-of-amval (DOA) are analyzed and compared. An important frame of beam-space DOA estimation algorithm is obtained. Finally, the beam-space algorithm performances were compared by beam gain, estimation error variance matrix and statistical analysis. Some instructive conclusions are obtained, and these results make for the algorithm selection in practice application. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:Considering the estimation accuracy reduction of Frequency Difference of Arrival (FDOA) caused by relative Doppler companding, a joint Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA), FDOA and differential Doppler rate estimation method is proposed and its Cramer-Rao low bound is derived in this paper. Firstly, second-order ambiguity function is utilized to reduce the dimensionality and estimate initial TDOA and differential Doppler rate. Secondly, the TDOA estimation is updated and FDOA is obtained using cross ambiguity function, in which relative Doppler companding is compensated by the existing differential Doppler rate. Thirdly, differential Doppler rate estimation is updated using cross estimator. Theoretical analysis on estimation variance and Cramer-Rao low bound shows that the final estimation of TDOA, FDOA and differential Doppler rate performs well at both low and high signal–noise ratio, although the initial estimation accuracy of TDOA and differential Doppler rate is relatively poor under low signal–noise ratio conditions. Simulation results finally verify the theoretical analysis and show that the proposed method can overcome relative Doppler companding problem and performs well for all TDOA, FDOA and differential Doppler rate estimation.
High-Precision DOA Estimation Based on Synthetic Aperture and Sparse Reconstruction

Abstract:The direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation is predominantly influenced by the antenna's aperture size. However, space constraints on flight platforms often necessitate the use of antennas with smaller apertures and fewer array elements. This inevitably imposes limitations on the DOA estimation's resolution and degrees of freedom. To address these precision constraints, we introduce an accurate DOA estimation method based on spatial synthetic aperture model. This method adopts a two-stage strategy to ensure both efficiency and precision in DOA estimation. Initially, the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) reconstruction algorithm processes the original aperture data, providing a rough estimate of target angles that guides the aircraft's flight direction. Subsequently, the early estimations merge with the aircraft's motion space samples, forming equivalent spatially synthesized array samples. The refined angle estimation then employs the OMP-RELAX algorithm. Moreover, with the off-grid issue in mind, we devise an estimation method integrating Bayesian parameter estimation with dictionary sequence refinement. The proposed technique harnesses the spatial synthetic aperture for pinpoint estimation, effectively addressing the challenges of atomic orthogonality and angular off-grid on estimation accuracy. Importantly, the efficiency of deploying sparse reconstruction for angle estimation is bolstered by our phased strategy, eliminating the necessity for fine grid analysis across the entire observation scene. Moreover, the poor estimation accuracy caused by coherent source targets and angular-flickering targets is improved by sparse reconstruction. Through simulation and experiment, we affirm the proposed method's efficacy in angle estimation. The results indicate that target angle estimation errors are limited to within 1°. Furthermore, we assess the impact of variables such as target state, heading angle, spatial sampling points, and target distance on the estimation accuracy of our method, showcasing its resilience and adaptability.

Fast and High-Precision DOA Estimation by Iterative Interpolation on Spatial Fourier Coefficients

Abstract:Among direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithms with narrow-band sensor arrays, eigen-based decomposition algorithms are hard to meet the demand of real-time signal processing because of the huge computation. To solve the problem of computational load, we propose and analyze a fast and high-precision DOA estimation algorithm based on spatial Fourier coefficient iterative interpolation. This method is shown to achieve identical asymptotic performance by constructing and interpolating the modified value at the adjacent bins of the maximum in spatial spectrum. An optimization method to reduce the iteration times is also given. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm may achieve the same estimation precision as MUSIC in certain condition without the huge computation.

Abstract:The paper proposes a direction of arrival(DOA) estimation method based on the subarray combination. The method utilizes the beamforming design and the spatial filtering on a specified spatial region by partitioned and overlapping subarrays in the array to suppress interference signals and improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the desired signal. By applying the spatial spectral estimation methods to the outputs of each subarray, the DOA estimation of the desired signal is implemented based on the positional relationship between the subarrays. Simulation experiments demonstrate that compared to the conventional spectral estimation methods, the DOA estimation method based on the subarray combination effectively reduces the impact of interference and noise signals on the DOA estimation. As a result, the accuracy and anti-interference capability of the signal direction finding in complex electromagnetic environments are further improved.

Abstract:The received signals of array are coherent because of the reflection and refraction in the multipath propagation.The presence of coherent signals leads to the rank loss of signal covariance matrix,which results in the invalidity of conventional high-resolution direction of arrival(DOA) estimation methods.Therefore a variety of algorithms have been presented to solve this problem,which recover the rank of covariance matrix by utilizing the special property of steering vector.Recently,there has been a growing interest in deriving new algorithms that can reduce the loss of array aperture and increase the number of resolvable signals as well as the accuracy of DOA estimation.In this paper,the yield of coherent signals and their effect on DOA estimation are introduced,and the data models are established.Then,the coherent DOA estimation algorithms are presented class by class depending on their decorrelation approaches.Finally,the future research directions are prospected.

Abstract:Estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) information of a signal is important for communications, localization and navigation systems. Time-delay based methods arc popular DOA algorithms that can estimate DOA with a minimal number of receivers. Time delay can be measured with subsample accuracy using phase-difference based methods. Phase-wrapping represents a major challenge for time delay estimation that occurs when inter-sensor spacing is large. Several methods exist for phase-unwrapping; the most successful methods are those search methods, which are time-consuming and do not lend themselves to theoretical analysis. In this paper, we present a phase-difference projection (PDP) method for DOA estimation which is capable of delivering more accurate results with reduced computational complexity. The proposed method has been tested and compared with several benchmark algorithms in both simulations and experiments. The results show that, at a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of -18 dB, using the proposed PDP algorithm, the percentage of the DOA estimates with errors smaller than < 5 degrees is 54%, and it reaches 100% at SNR = -7 dB. This performance is not matched by the benchmark methods. For the utility test, we implemented this algorithm to realize an ultrasound-based air-mouse and it achieves satisfactory user experiences when using Google Maps, or playing some interactive games.
A New Method for Wideband DOA Estimation

Abstract:As signal processing technology develops,in many application fields,such as radar and sonar,needs array processing more and more accurate estimation of direction of arrival(DOA).In this paper,a new class of focusing matrices for coherent signal subspace method(CSM) is proposed.These matrices are formed based on the concept of uniform focusing transformation of the direction of arrival(DOA) of wideband sources.In each frequency bin,it is assumed that there exists a common focusing matrix on all DOA's of some range.Then the best approximate one is just the focusing matrix about the unknown DOA's in the range.Simulations show that the new focusing method not only improves the focusing performance,but also reduces the computational burden.

Abstract:In a direction-finding process, high-resolution subspace-based algorithms are the most popular ones. It is well-known that their performance of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation mainly depends on the accuracy of the signal subspace. However, the traditional methods of capturing the signal subspace do not mine the information hidden in the array output in depth, which may restrict their application to some extent. In this study, we elaborate on a novel scheme to extract the signal subspace through refinement of the correlation matrix of the array output. In the developed scheme, a collection of spatial-temporal correlation matrices is first established. Then, we define a weighting vector for the correlation matrices and take the weighted average of the correlation matrices as the covariance matrix of the array output. It is clear that this covariance matrix is more general than the traditional covariance matrix, and the signal subspace can be optimized through adjustment of the weighting vector. In this study, we present an optimal weighting vector by adopting particle swarm optimization (PSO). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach has a better performance in root mean square error (RMSE) compared to the existing schemes.
Comparision of Two Different Methods for Spatial Resampling on Wideband Signal's DOA

Abstract:Spatial resample is a kind of algorithm used to process wideband signals.Due to the wide band,as the different frequency the array manifold is different,that those methods we used in single frequency circumstances could not be used in wideband situations any more.In order to make the signal subspaces alike(the same is what we subject to),we receive virtual array outputs which are transferred from the inputs received by receiving array through spatial resample processing.Basing on focus algorithm,the algorithm remains the ability of handling coherent signals.There are different ways to implement spatial resample.The basic principle of spatial resample here is discussed and two different means is proposed.At last the two through emulations are compared.
New high-resolution DOA estimation algorithm

Abstract:DOA estimation is very important in array signal processing, while traditional algorithms such as Multiple Signal Classification algorithm (MUSIC) requires eigenvalue decomposition of covariance matrix and spatial spectral peak in the whole search, which is difficult and time-consuming. In particular, there exists robustness problem in two-dimensional DOA estimation algorithm. This paper presents a DOA estimation algorithm based on minimum cross-entropy spectral analysis, which requires only one array of sampling(snapshot)data with fewer elements. And it still can obtain high-resolution spectral analysis. Based on cepstrum method and inverse FFT transform it can improve the convergence speed. Numerical simulation results show that compared to the conventional spatial spectrum estimation methods this algorithm has a higher resolution and a smaller amount of computation, being capable of real-time array sig-nal processing. The algorithm does not depend on the number of pre-estimate of the source, results in good tolerance, high resolution and low side lobe level.

Abstract:This work analyses the performance-complexity tradeoff for different direction of arrival (DoA) estimation techniques. Such tradeoff is investigated taking into account uniform linear array structures. Several DoA estimation techniques have been compared, namely the conventional Delay-and-Sum (DS), Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR), Multiple Signal Classifier (MUSIC) subspace, Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance Technique (ESPRIT), Unitary-ESPRIT and Fourier Transform method (FT-DoA). The analytical formulation of each estimation technique as well the comparative numerical results are discussed focused on the estimation accuracy versus complexity tradeoff. The present study reveals the behavior of seven techniques, demonstrating promising ones for current and future location applications involving DoA estimation, especially for 5G massive MIMO systems.
