Abstract:The research progress in internal waves in China based on the past four years (2002-2006) is reviewed. Through analysis of the papers published by Chinese scholars in national or international journals, we review the progress mainly from the following three aspects: the development of the internal wave theories, the numerical studies, and the observational data including the measurements in situ, in lab and by remote sensing. Furthermore, researches in the future are discussed in the end.

Abstract:A review of China cloud physics research during 2003–2006 is made in this paper. The studies on cloud field experiments and observation, cloud physics and precipitation, including its theoretical applications in hail suppression and artificial rain enhancement, cloud physics and lightning, and clouds and climate change are included. Due primarily to the demand from weather modification activities, the issue of cloud physics and weather modification has been addressed in China with many field experiments and model studies. While cloud physics and weather modification is still an important research field, the interaction between aerosol, cloud and radiation processes, which is the key issue of current climate change research, has become a new research direction in China over the past four years.
A Brief Review of Interplanetary Physics Research Progress in Mainland China During 2020–2022

Abstract:Through independent research by the Chinese scientists or their international collaborations, great achievements have been made in interplanetary physics research in Mainland China during the past two years (2020?2022). More than 150 papers have been published in academic journals in this field during this period. These achievements can be grouped into the following areas, at least: (i) solar corona; (ii) solar and interplanetary transient phenomena; (iii) radio bursts; (iv) Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical modeling; (v) solar energet-ic particles and cosmic rays. These advances have greatly enriched our understanding of interplanetary physics, i.e. our knowledge of solar activities and solar eruptions, their propagation in the interplanetary space, and the corre-sponding geoeffects on the Earth. In the sense of application, they have also improved the forecasting of space weather. In this paper we will give a very short review about these advances.

Abstract:Significant progress has been made by Chinese scientists in research of interplanetary physics during the recent two years (2018-2020).These achievements are reflected at least in the following aspects:Activities in solar corona and lower solar atmosphere;solar wind and turbulence;filament/prominence,jets,flares,and radio bursts;active regions and solar eruptions;coronal mass ejections and their interplanetary counterparts;other interplanetary structures;space weather prediction methods;magnetic reconnection;Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical modeling;solar energetic particles,cosmic rays,and Forbush decreases;machine learning methods in space weather and other aspects.More than one hundred and forty papers in the academic journals have been published in these research directions.These fruitful achievements are obtained by Chinese scholars in solar physics and space physics either independently or through international collaborations.They greatly improve people's understanding of solar activities,solar eruptions,the corresponding space weather effects,and the Sun-Earth relations.Here we will give a very brief review on the research progress.However,it must be pointed out that this paper may not completely cover all achievements in this field due to our limited knowledge.
In-Situ Measurements of Cloud-Precipitation Microphysics in the East Asian Monsoon Region Since 1960

Abstract:A large number of in-situ measurements of cloud-precipitation microphysical properties have been made since 1960, including measurements of particle size distribution, particle concentration, and liquid water content of clouds and rain. These measurements have contributed to considerable progress in understanding microphysical processes in clouds and precipitation and significant improvements in parameterizations of cloud microphysics in numerical models. This work reviews key findings regarding cloud-precipitation microphysics over China. The total number concentrations of various particles vary significantly, with certain characteristic spatial scales. The size distributions of cloud droplets in stratiform clouds can generally be fit with gamma distributions, but the fit parameters cover a wide range. Raindrop size distributions（RSDs）associated with stratiform clouds can be fit with either exponential or gamma distributions, while RSDs associated with convective or mixed stratiform-cumuliform clouds are best fit with gamma distributions.Concentrations of ice nuclei（IN） over China are higher than those observed over other regions, and increase exponentially as temperature decreases. The particle size distributions of ice crystals, snow crystals, and hailstones sampled at a variety of locations can be reliably approximated by using exponential distributions,while aerosol particle size distributions are best described as the sum of a modified gamma distribution and a Junge power-law distribution. These results are helpful for evaluating and improving the fidelity of physical processes and hydrometeor fields simulated by microphysical parameterizations. The comprehensive summary and analysis of previous work presented here also provide useful guidelines for the design of future observational programs.

Abstract:During the past two years（2016–2018）, great achievements have been made in the Chinese research of interplanetary physics, with nearly 100 papers published in the academic journals. The achievements are including but not limited to the following topics: solar corona; solar wind and turbulence; filament/prominence and jets; solar flare; radio bursts; particle acceleration at coronal shocks; magnetic flux ropes; instability;instrument; Coronal Mass Ejections（CMEs） and their interplanetary counterparts; Magnetohydrodynamic（MHD） numerical modeling; solar energetic particles and cosmic rays. The progress further improves our understanding of the eruptions of solar activities, their evolutions and propagations in the heliosphere, and final geoeffects on our Earth. These results were achieved by the Chinese solar and space scientists independently or via international collaborations. This paper will give a brief review of these achievements.

Abstract:Atmospheric electricity research has been conducted actively in China, having profited from the development and application of high temporal and spatial resolution lightning detection and location technologies. This paper reviews the scientific advances made in the field of atmospheric electricity in China from 2011 to 2018, covering the following five aspects: (1) lightning detection and location techniques; (2) discharge processes and parameters associated with rocket-triggered lightning; (3) physical processes in natural lightning and attachment to the ground; (4) lightning activities and charge structure in different thunderstorms; and (5) effects of thunderstorms on the upper atmosphere. In addition, some outstanding questions for future research are outlined.

The main research progress of atmospheric physics and atmospheric environment in the past 40 years of reform and opening-up was reviewed, the outstanding research achievements since the 21st century were summarized, the major problems and challenges are pointed out, and the key directions and suggestions for future development are put forward.</p>

Abstract:Climate and climate change have always been a research focus of atmospheric sciences. This paper summaries research efforts, achievements and international contributions of the Chinese scientific community on climate and climate change over the past 70 years. The review is based on papers published officially in national or international scientific journals,and is organized to cover six aspects:(1) general climate studies;(2) impact of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau;(3) impact of the East Asian monsoon;(4) influences of teleconnection oscillation and westerlies;(5) climate dynamics and development of climate models; and(6) climate change. It is, however, to be noted that the present review can not be considered as an exhaustive one, since there is a huge body of literature in the field.

However some works were still conducted by computer simulation or using the data from other space missions and ground geomagnetic observations. This paper briefly review these previous works based on papers selected from the 28 publications from April 2008 to April 2010. The subjects covered various sub-branches of magnetospheric physics, including geomagnetic storm, magnetospheric substorm and etc.

Abstract:A large number of papers have been published and great efforts have been made in the recent 20 years by the Chinese oceanographic and meteorological scientists in the ocean-atmosphere interaction studies. The present paper is an overview of the major achievements made by Chinese scientists and their collaborators in studies of larger scale ocean-atmosphere interaction in the following oceans: the South China Sea, the Tropical Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the North Pacific. Many interesting phenomena and dynamic mechanisms have been discovered and studied in these papers. These achievements have improved our understanding of climate variability and have great implications in climate prediction, and thus are highly relevant to the ongoing international Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) efforts.

Abstract:It is reviewed that the advances in research in fields of atmospheric dynamics, numerical weather forecasting and climatology. First, in the field of atmospheric dynamics the developments in dynamics of diabatic waves and low frequency waves, the dispersive effects of turbulence and nonlinear atmospheric waves are reviewed. Then, the past, present and future of numerical weather forecasting are discussed and the present models of numerical weather forecasting used in China are also reviewed. Finally, the research on temperature and precipitation in the past of China and the research on Asia monsoon are reviewed.

Abstract:This study reviews the recent progresses in cloud physics, processes, and associated radiative effects in China from 2016 to 2022. It mainly consists of three topics, including the recent development of cloud observation techniques, advances in understanding of cloud physical properties and processes, and quantification of cloud radiative effects (CRE). For cloud observation techniques, the launch of new-era high spatio-temporal resolution geostationary satellites makes us able to examine the diurnal variation of cloud properties, along with the cloud properties during different stages of cloud development. Correspondingly, new cloud retrieval algorithms including both physical based and machine learning methods have been developed. With more accurate and reliable aircraft observations and a longer period of satellite observations, cloud physical properties and processes have been further understood, including the spaito-temporal variations of cloud properties, the cloud droplet size distribution, the aerosol-cloud interaction processes, and so on. In addition, recent progress in aerosol effects on precipitation by affecting cloud properties and development has also been summarized, including the increase (reduction) of precipitation amount by aerosols for heavy (light) precipitation cases, the advancement of precipitation time by absorbing aerosols near surface, the delay of precipitation time by scattering aerosols near surface, and the enlarging precipitation area of tropical cyclones by aerosols. With long period radiation observations, CREs have also been quantified, including the temporal variation and spatial distribution of CREs, the various influential factors to changes of CREs, and the identification of uncertainty sources in CMIP6 model simulations of CREs. Challenges associated with cloud studies have also been proposed in this study from the perspective of observations, physical processes, and radiative effects.

Abstract:Atmospheric electricity is composed of a series of electric phenomena in the atmosphere. Significant advances in atmospheric electricity research conducted in China have been achieved in recent years. In this paper, the research progress on atmospheric electricity achieved in China during 2019–22 is reviewed focusing on the following aspects: (1) lightning detection and location techniques, (2) thunderstorm electricity, (3) lightning forecasting methods and techniques, (4) physical processes of lightning discharge, (5) high energy emissions and effects of thunderstorms on the upper atmosphere, and (6) the effect of aerosol on lightning.
