Abstract:As a traditional fiber plant, kenaf also has tender branches and leaves which contain high and fine protein. Many domestic and international studies showed that kenaf has a good value as forage. With the speedy development of the stockbreeding and the forage industry, the forage with high and fine protein comes to be urgent goods. Further exploration and research on the feeding value of kenaf will be more helpful for the solution of the deficiency of the forage with high quality protein in South China. This paper summarizes the international research progress and prospect of the feeding value of kenaf and pro-vides references for further study.

Abstract:Currently,developed countries and multinational seed companies have made great progress in R&D of plant functional genomics,transgenic technology and genetically modified(GM) products.Production of GM crop is increasing rapidly and has become a new emerging industry in recent years.The Chinese government is highly concerned with the R&D and their industrialization of GM crops,and leads the developing countries in this respect, but there still has distance with the rapid development of international industry and can not meet the needs of our agricultural requirements.There exist several limitations in transgenic technology and product innovation, industrialization mechanisms and support conditions in China.Based on systematic comparison analysis,we propose to enhance our transgenic R&D capability building and transgenic based breeding,as well as to breakthrough transgenic core technology and develop GM products.With ever closer collaborations among research institutes,universities and companies,we aim to develop large enterprises with self-innovation capability and strong market competition.Meanwhile,we should promote public comprehension for GM crops and therefore establish an amenable social environment that propels rapid development of transgenic breeding-based emerging industry in China.

Abstract:With some technological breakthroughs such as sequencing and microarray in the recent years, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and phenomics have made a great progress in the world. Theories and technologies of crop breeding have also been revolutionarized considerably. Traditional crop breeding is based on phenotypic selection, which is often called "empirical breeding" with poor predictability, long breeding cycle and low breeding efficiency. Modern crop molecular breeding including marker-assisted breeding, transgenic breeding and molecular design breeding has become an important direction in the field of plant breeding. It is based on the combination of genotypic selection and phenotypic selection and thus target genes/alleles can be directly selected and pyramided. Therefore, the efficiency of molecular breeding can be improved and the breeding duration can be shortened. The paper defines the concept of molecular breeding, briefly analyzes current status and issues of crop molecular breeding in China, and discusses strategies in the future.

Abstract:It was reviewed the rapeseed explant types,selection markers,transformation methods,the influence factors of regeneration systems and its applications in rapeseed breeding were discussed.It was also mentioned the problems and development in the future of rapeseed transformation.It was found that there were still limitations in the transformation of rapeseeds through the published papers and establishment of transformation system of rapeseeds.Firstly,the process of receptor regeneration was a long period and the frequency of gene transformation was low.Secondly,the introduced gene might be silent and the expression of transferred gene would unstable in the progeny.Thirdly,the scientific evaluation should be made about the bad influence of transgenic rapeseed to human heath and the natural environment.Moreover,more complete law and rule should be made to supervise the environment release of transgenic plants.At the same time,it should meet the needs of people by modifying the trait of rapeseeds.Furthermore,there would be a wide foreground to produce the substitute of energy source by introducing special gene into rapeseed plants.

Abstract:During the past two decades,substantial progress has been made in genetic modification of turfgrasses.The systems for genetic transformation have been established in most of the main turfgrass species,and the induction of resistant genes into the species has been becoming the hotspot.The factors affecting the genetic transformation of turfgrasses,and the problems existing in the course of transformation,i.e.,somaclonal variation and the stabilization in the transgenic plants,the efficiency of genetic transformation,the effect of foreign genes on the environment were summarized,the relationship between genetic transformation and traditional breeding was discussed and the research aims for turfgrass breeding in the future were pointed out.

Abstract:Alfalfa is one of the most important legume forages in the world and contributes greatly to the improvement of ecosystems, nutrition, and food security. Diseases caused by pathogens and pests severely restrict the production of alfalfa. Breeding resistant varieties is the most economical and effective strategy for the control of alfalfa diseases and pests, and the key to breeding resistant varieties is to identify important resistance genes. Plant innate immunity is the theoretical basis for identifying resistant genes and breeding resistant varieties. In recent years, the framework of plant immunity theory has been gradually formed and improved, and considerable progress has been made in the identification of alfalfa resistance genes and the revelation of the related mechanisms. In this review, we summarize the basic theory of plant immunity and identify alfalfa resistance genes to different pathogens and insects and resistance mechanisms. The current situation, problems, and future prospects of alfalfa resistance research are also discussed. Breeding resistant cultivars with effective resistance genes, together with other novel plant protection technologies, will greatly improve alfalfa production.

Abstract:The present study is an attempt to review the history of super hybrid rice breeding in China and abroad and an introduction to advancement in super hybrid rice breeding in China.At present,a great breakthrough in utilizing subspecies heterosis of indica and japonica rice and plant type breeding has been obtained in super hybrid rice breeding in China,and super hybrid rice has been extended for large scale cultivation.But,there are many problems existing in super hybrid rice cultivation,such as poorer adaptability,lower seed setting rate,bad grain quality,worse resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses,fewer double-cropping super rice varieties(combinations),imperfect breeding theory and technology.Therefore,some suggestions and research prospects have been put forward for overcoming these problems.

Abstract:In the past two decades, Chinese scientists have achieved significant progress on three aspects of wheat genetic transformation. First, the wheat transformation platform has been established and optimized to improve the transformation efficiency, shorten the time required from starting of transformation procedure to the fertile transgenic wheat plants obtained as well as to overcome the problem of genotype-dependent for wheat genetic transformation in wide range of wheat elite varieties. Second, with the help of many emerging techniques such as CRISPR/cas9 function of over 100 wheat genes has been investigated. Finally, modern technology has been combined with the traditional breeding technique such as crossing to accelerate the application of wheat transformation. Overall, the wheat end-use quality and the characteristics of wheat stress tolerance have been improved by wheat genetic engineering technique. So far, wheat transgenic lines integrated with quality-improved genes and stress tolerant genes have been on the way of Production Test stage in the field. The debates and the future studies on wheat transformation have been discussed, and the brief summary of Chinese wheat breeding research history has also been provided in this review.

Abstract:Legumes are rich in protein and phytochemicals and have provided a healthy diet for human beings for thousands of years. In recognition of the important role they play in human nutrition and agricultural production, the researchers have made great efforts to gain new genetic traits in legumes such as yield, stress tolerance, and nutritional quality. In recent years, the significant increase in genomic resources for legume plants has prepared the groundwork for applying cutting-edge breeding technologies, such as transgenic technologies, genome editing, and genomic selection for crop improvement. In addition to the different genome editing technologies including the CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing system, this review article discusses the recent advances in plant-specific gene-editing methods, as well as problems and potential benefits associated with the improvement of legume crops with important agronomic properties. The genome editing technologies have been effectively used in different legume plants including model legumes like alfalfa and lotus, as well as crops like soybean, cowpea, and chickpea. We also discussed gene-editing methods used in legumes and the improvements of agronomic traits in model and recalcitrant legumes. Despite the immense opportunities genome editing can offer to the breeding of legumes, governmental regulatory restrictions present a major concern. In this context, the comparison of the regulatory framework of genome editing strategies in the European Union and the United States of America was also discussed. Gene-editing technologies have opened up new possibilities for the improvement of significant agronomic traits in legume breeding.
