Abstract:In the increasingly warming wave of renovation and reconstruction in old cities,exploring models which can balance various contradictions is the chief problem in the redevelopment of old cities in China.However,there is no general model.Taking Hangzhou Quanye Li as an example,this article explores the methods and processes meeting with the Chinese current situation.Based on the site survey,the project analyzes the development mode,planning method,and architecture designing ideas of the construction and renovation in Quanye Li old residential area from the angles of sociology and typology.Finally,it suggests to exploiting apartments for the elderly and residential districts for both oldsters and youngsters,as well as continuing traditional settlement texture and keeping live traditional spatial sense in the planning and architecture design.

Abstract:Architectural energy-saving has become a hotspot in the world. Energy-saving for the existing public buildings could not only reduce energy consumption effectively, but also improve both outdoor environment and indoor healthy comfort to advance the quality of life and work, so it is a work of great significance. Combining with study process on energy-saving renovation for existing public buildings at home and abroad, this article analyzes the status of energy consumption in China and its significance to hope that the renovation work could be done smoothly through the cooperation of users, designers and government.

Abstract:Green and energy-saving reforms, which use protection as a precondition, can, not only reduce a building's energy use but also improve its level of comfort. Such reforms can also adapt to the new demands of modern society while extending the life of traditional architecture. Therefore, this research chose a classical, traditional house in Hangzhou Zhejiang, China, as a transformation object - attempting to implement low-cost, energy-saving technology. The building's energy consumption and level of comfort before and after the transformation have been simulated and measured to compare the effects of the transformation. The authors hope this research will provide insights into green and energy-saving reform technology and aid the sustainable development of traditional houses.

Abstract:Renovation philosophy and residential construction mode are key problems encountered in the renovation of urban villages in China. Existing research fruits on renovation philosophy, and policies consider fairness and efficiency and cover-sharing research consensus. However, research on residential construction mode in renovation still faces challenges, such as weak relevant policy pertinence, insufficient objective references, and poor universality. In this study, the changes of the architectural spaces of a typical urban village community in Xi'an City from the beginning to the end of the renovation were discussed. The space requirements of different user groups were analyzed and summarized, and then adapted to the different types of building spaces. In addition, the residential construction model applicable to the inclusive renovation philosophy was established. Research results corroborated that the renovation of urban village should refer to its functional orientations in the community. The community-centered renovation residential district should also meet the requirements of different user groups in the community, including residential, living, and entertainment functions. Community-subcentered residential district should meet the space demands of residential and living functions. Community-subordinated residential district meets space demands of internal residents for residential and living. Moreover, residential district space is relieved by combining practical and certain spatial factors. In this research, the building space compositions of different user groups were reviewed and refined in the “bottom-up” pattern. Research conclusions provide design references for the practical renovation of urban villages.

Abstract:Urban residential buildings are the prime contributors to carbon emissions, whose reduction is significantly affected by old residential areas as essential components of urban renewal. In current studies on the potential for carbon reduction in residential localities, the measurement standard mostly used is the amount of carbon reduced during operations because of the energy-saving renovation of building monomers. This study conducted a life cycle assessment for the carbon emission impact analysis of the renovation of old residential areas, with a comprehensive consideration of carbon emissions at the materialization, demolition, and use stages of the renovation process. Five systems in these areas were evaluated: landscape greening, building monomers, water resources, solid waste, and infrastructure. An actual residential renovation case was used as a reference in comparing the life cycle carbon reduction effects of different technical measures. The results showed that carbon reduction effects are overestimated by 5.54% (from 29.59% to 35.13%) when embodied carbon is disregarded. Among the renovation measures, adding green spaces, recycling garbage, and replacing energy-saving lamps in public areas offer short carbon payback, whereas the addition of rooftop solar photovoltaic panels is the most efficient carbon-reduction measure. This study completes and expands the scope of accounting for residential renovation from spatial and temporal scales. It can also guide the low-carbon renovation of old residential areas to help cities save energy and reduce emissions.

In the process of building renovation, the selection of building materials has become a general concern. Green building materials are gradually entering the public eye, and green buildings have become a widely favored type of construction. The use of green building materials has become a trend. This paper, through introducing the concept, necessity, and characteristic advantages of green building materials, takes the example of the renovation design of an expert reception center to explore the feasibility of using green building materials in six aspects: building doors and windows, energy-saving glass, building walls, building insulation materials, decorative materials, and wood structure materials.

Abstract:Recent social trends - the diversification of lifestyles, and revitalization of the sharing economy - has led to significant changes in the fundamental functions and residences, particularly in apartments. Therefore, this study aims to define an optimized residential space by analyzing housing forms and lifestyle change factors. The study further categorizes the characteristics and operation system in an integrated living space including the integrated experience design characteristics and organization system for service content development and operation. The study scope and methods to classify the characteristics and systems of integrated experience design in integrated housing are as follows: First, the characteristics of changes in housing forms and lifestyles were defined through literature and previous research. Second, in-depth interviews were conducted, and the study direction was established using the analyzed factors of space experience design. Third, the structure concept of living platforms and the systems for implementing experience design were classified using the actualized space experience design characteristics. This study focuses on the basic concepts and systems for implementing integrated experiences in residences. Subsequently, it approaches the direction and systems for changes in housing as a unified platform. This study provides a framework that can be theorized using the experience design system for living spaces derived from its results.

Abstract:In recent years, with the booming development of our country’s urbanization and the soaring house price, small apartments have played one of the most important roles in the young people’s lives. So the designers should focus on how to build comfortable and warm living environment for young people in a limited space on house type designing process. According to the principles of residential design for young people, this paper analyzes and explores relevant schemes and suggestions on the small apartments design,China's urbanization process has been gradually accelerated with the trend of great large number of people flooding into the city, and the housing price has also risen accordingly. In case of the highly increasing house prise, young people prefer to choosing the small apartments as their transitional houses. Therefore, small apartments occupy an important position in urban construction, and people have put forward higher requirements for the design and space utilization of small apartments. The core problem that every designer urgently needs to solve is how to design small space for young people to be more warm and comfortable. This situation requires designers to consider and study the design of household space in an all-round way to meet the needs of different groups of people for space.

Abstract:Up to now, in the study of chinese modern housing, few researches provide important results in regards to Li-Fen dwelling houses in Wuhan, China. Nevertheless, comparing to Li-Nong dwelling houses in Shanghai, the study of Li-Fen is relatively lacking both quantitatively and qualitatively. In some cases, Li-Fen dwelling houses are simply regarded as Li-Nong dwelling houses. Therefore, it would be worthwhile and meaningful to examine the current situation of Li-Fen dwellings so as better its protection and retrofitting in future. This study systematically introduced the evolvement of Li-Fen dwelling houses with a focus on historical culture and influencing factors. Also, its characteristics were discussed from the perspective of inner structures, part decorations, and spatial layouts.
Decision-making factors for renovation of old residential areas in Chinese cities under the concept of sustainable development

Abstract:The renovation problem of old residential areas is not only a city management task, but also a major engineering of benefiting the people, which is related to the people living and working in peace and contentment and the improvement of the overall image of the city. In order to improve the appearance of old residential areas in Chinese cities and the living conditions of their residents, city planners must take a scientific and structured approach to renovation. After analyzing current status of the old residential in several major Chinese cities, consulting the literature, and undertaking field investigations, this paper summarizes the main influencing factors on renovation decision-making. We propose five hypotheses, which we test using questionnaire survey data, sample analysis of these influencing factors, and a structural equation model (SEM). The results show that the degree of influence of each factor on renovation decisions ranks as technology being the most influential, followed by the economy, policy, the environment, and society. In addition, we find that there is nonzero correlation between these various factors.

Abstract:Abstract The existing residential area in Shenzhen, China mainly refers to a specific multi-story brick and concrete residential area built in the 1980s-1990s. After 30-40 years of use, the structures in these settlements have experienced different degrees of deterioration. As a megacity in southern China, Shenzhen has engaged in a diversified transformation to maintain and renew existing residential area, including comprehensive environmental improvements, facade and roof transformations, elevator installations, and pipeline replacements. However, there has been a lack of systematic reviews of different renovation practices and their effects on existing residential areas. Based on concept of “ level ” from open buildings, this study reviews the hierarchical relationships in existing residential areas in Shenzhen, dividing the residential building support systems into four parts: the enclosed structures, components attached to facades, the public space in a building, and public pipelines. The study reviewed nine typical case settlements using field investigations and analysis, and summarized the mode and degree of the renovation or transformation, the rights and responsibilities of the subjects involved, and the purpose of the current support system elements. This facilitates a systematic review of the problems emerging during a renovation. This study provides a new perspective and theoretical basis for reviewing the renovation of existing residential areas in China.
Comprehensive Renovation and Optimization Design of Balconies in Old Residential Buildings in Beijing: A Study

Abstract:This study presents a comprehensive approach to renovating and optimizing balconies in old residential buildings in Beijing. Firstly, it explores residential balconies' evolution, characteristics, and development trends to identify various sample types and understand the associated problems and residents' needs related to balconies through investigation. Secondly, the Rhino/Grasshopper parametric platform is employed to simulate the performance and analyze data from standard balcony types, resulting in five qualitative and four quantitative renovation strategies and methods. Subsequently, these comprehensive renovation and optimization design strategies are implemented in the renovation process, and their performance is simulated. The daylight autonomy (DA), universal daylight indicator (UDI), and spatial daylight autonomy (sDA) metrics experienced significant increases of 16.56, 20.12, and 0.13, respectively, indicating improved light environment and functionality. Notably, the proposed strategies maintain consistent energy consumption and thermal comfort levels. Both PMV and PPD have improved, but the improvement is not significant, only by 0.01. The window-to-wall ratio has been increased by 0.1, and insulation has been added. The overall thermal comfort value is stable. These findings validate the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed approach and methods. This study provides valuable references for renovating and optimizing balconies in old residential buildings, contributing to problem-solving efforts and enhancing living quality.

Abstract:The value and necessity of the current renovation and reuse of old industrial buildings are obtained by introducing the status quo of China's old industrial buildings and citing the protection methods in the world in each period. Through the field investigation and observation analysis in Guangzhou, China, taking the number of users as the evaluation standard, the influence of the building material, color, number of floor, lighting and greening on the renovation and utilization of old industrial buildings is expounded. Combined with the relevant theory and case analysis, the favorable factors of affecting the old industrial building renovation are obtained to be some of the inspiration and recommendations of the old industrial building renovation and utilization. Finally, according to research conclusion, it is applied to the actual project. Through the project design, the previous research conclusion is further comprehensively used, and the final result is explained with the help of the three-dimensional model.

Abstract:Abstract The author conducted a three-week survey of the industrial structure, residence and minority culture of Shangyangxi Village in Dali, Yunnan. Focusing on the research and protection of a “Bai” traditional building with a century-old “three wing houses and a screen wall” style, a certain degree of commercial and residential renovation of the building was taken so as to meet the actual needs of households. As for this design, the author relied on the location of the village, the architectural characteristics and the subjective requirements of the household to complete the repair of the house and to update the function on the technical and design perspectives. This design not only provides an example for the renovation of other Bai traditional buildings, but also provides a different approach to village-renovation in the future rural planning and heritage protection. Bai dwellings should be protected according to the different characteristics of the village and adapted to the local conditions, giving the traditional buildings a new function and life.
The Research of Co-design Approaches Based on Designer Guidance in the Renovation of Old Community in Shanghai-Illustrated in the Case of Zhuyuan Community Center

Abstract:: With the decrease in usable land in recent years, people have begun to pay more attention to the renovation of small and micro space in old community space and discussion on urban space have gradually shifted from spatial to social attributes and social meanings. The demonstration of public participation process has been exactly being of significance on urban updating and adaptive reusing of existing stocks. Simultaneously, it has caused rethink about conventional designer-leading projects and enlightened academics about bottom-up concept for renovation. Nevertheless, the existing approaches of public participation is still facing certain issues such as imperfect participation mechanism, unclear-defined authorities and responsibilities, halfway involvement and so on. Through analyzing the renovation progress of the public space of Zhuyuan community, this article is aimed to argue whether the public might continuously and authentically participate to the holistic processes from preliminary design to construction and final operation based on multi-collaborations. And modular design approaches are experimented in order to integrate the variable resources, optimize the spatial functions and provide the ease of construction and assembly. Eventually, the public participation principles and strategies based on the guidance of designers are posed, which might provide a reference for the follow-up researches.
