Abstract:Dongtai salt lake in Qaidam Basin contains abundant boron and lithium resources, and has the highest reserve of lithium found in the world, but the origin of these resources is highly controversial. In this study, we carried out a detailed study on chemical compositions and boron isotope characteristics of salt sediments collected from a drill core in the Dongtai salt lake. The evaporite, carbonate and silicate phases of the sediments show δ11B values of −6.4‰ to +2.2‰, −17.3‰ to +0.5‰ and −14.6‰ to −2.8‰, respectively, which suggest a non-marine origin for the salt lake. The variation of δ11B vs. K% identified the evolution process of the salt lake. The geochemical/hydrochemical signatures and the reserve estimation of boron resources approved the dominant sources of saline resources containing abundant B, K and Li from the inflowing Nalenggele River. The boron isotopic fractionation factors between evaporite and brine (i.e. αevaporite–brine) vary from 0.9869 to 0.9955, and the linear variation of αevaporite–brine vs. Li/Mg molar ratios reflects the boron isotopic fractionation during crystallization of the salts. The positive correlation between δ11B and [B] in the carbonate phase reflects the pH control on the incorporation of boron into the carbonates, and the equilibrium isotope fractionation follows the Rayleigh isotope fractionation rule in a closed system. The variation of δ11B values in the silicate phase behaved as an oscillating pattern, and the more negative shift of δ11B values corresponds to the mudstone strata deposited under warm–humid climate conditions, indicating the influence of intensive weathering.

Abstract:Natural boron minerals from the salt lakes in Qinghai and Tibet have been collected and analyzed for the 11B/ 10B isotopic ratio. All boron minerals were verified by the X-ray diffraction. The results show that the 11B/ 10B isotopic ratios of boron minerals from the salt lakes in Tibet range from 4.005 1 to 4.053 5 and Qinghai from 3.930 7 to 4.042 0, δ 11B values of boron minerals from the salt lakes in Tibet range from -11.1‰ to +3.2‰ and Qinghai from -29.5% to -2.0‰. Abstract:Da Qaidam Salt Lake is known for its both liquid and solid boron resource.The exploitation of the boron deposits and related geological studies started since 1950s.Little attention has been paid,however,to the study of sedimentary records from the salt lake as regarding to brine evolution and environmental change.Here we report the result of AMS 14C dating and mineralogical investigation on a subbottom sediment section from the central area of the saline water-body.The result reveals that the subbottom pinnoite deposit was formed before 3600 a BP,and that the lake underwent three stages of lake–levels and brine evolution in the late Holocene,which were determined mainly by precipitation-controlled catchment inflow.The mineralogical records also depict fluctuations in lake-levels and water chemistry on decadal and centennial scales.The data provide a proxy record for the reconstruction of the late-Holocene hydro-climate change on the northern Qaidam Basin.

Abstract:There are typical salt lake-type borate deposits in the northern Qaidam Basin, which are mainly distributed in Da Qaidam Lake (DQL), Xiao Qaidam Lake, and Mahai Basin (MHB). DQL has deposited famous solid borates and enriched a large number of brine boron deposits. It is the earliest industrial production base in China. Nanbaxian (NBX) to the west of DQL is a unique area where solid borates are deposited in MHB. Although there are three salt lakes in the MHB, borate deposits were only deposited in the salt pits of NBX, and the formation process of these borate deposits remains to be clarified. In this study, the major elements, boron contents, and d 11 B values in the water and sediments of NBX were investigated in conjunction with the B-Na-Mg equivalence diagrams and relevant data from other salt lakes to elucidate the source of boron in MHB and the depositional conditions of borate minerals in NBX. The results are as follows: (1) The source of boron in NBX differs from that in three salt lakes in MHB. The source in NBX is mainly constrained by the weathering and fluid-rock (Boron-bearing ultra-high pressure metamorphic belt) interaction, while that in Dezongmahai and Niulangzhinv–Balunmahai lakes are primarily controlled by river water and anticlinal brine, respectively. (2) The high boron content (0.28 to 41.38 mg/L) and low d 11 B values (- 34.71‰ to - 6.14‰) of the water-soluble phase of sediments in NBX are consistent with geochemical characteristics (d 11 B: - 23.67‰ to - 3.0‰) of borates in DQL, demonstrating that the re-dissolution of borate deposits in NBX. (3) Deposition of borate minerals in the MHB requires ionic equivalents of Mg, Na, and B to 0.02 to 0.4, 0.25 to 0.75, and 0.2 to 0.7, respectively. Additionally, the brine hydrochemistry in which the borate are deposited must be of the carbonate or sulfate type, and the brine water should be greater than 8 in pH and 400 mg/L in boron content. This study provides a theoretical basis for exploring and exploiting salt lake-type borate deposits.

Abstract:Tuotuohe Basin, one of sedimentary basins in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, has a large number of salt lakes, and these salt lakes are typically rich in boron, lithium and other rare elements. The origin and extent of these resources is still unknown. In this study, we present a detailed analysis of several chemical compositions (Na/Cl, B/Cl, B/Li and Br/Cl molar ratios) δ 11 B and δ 37 Cl characteristics of salt lakes in the Tuotuohe Basin. The evidences of δ 11 B and δ 37 Cl have proved that the salt lakes in the Tuotuohe Basin are a type of leached brine. The amount of B isotopes in the water of these lakes is in the range of +0.17‰ to +12.52‰, suggesting that the salt lakes have a terrestrial origin. δ 37 Cl and Cl/Br relations suggest that brines in Tuotuohe Basin belong to halite dissolving and also influenced by rainwater and the leaching of volcanic rocks during the evolution process. The characteristics of the δ 11 B–B relationship are similar to those observed in the Tibetan geothermal area, indicating that these 2 places have the same B sources. Moreover, they have a crustal origin (Marine carbonate rocks and volcanic rocks) instead of a deep mantle source.

Abstract: In recent years, good progress has been made in the study of boron isotopes in indicating sedimentary environment and provenance. The relationship between δ11B value and provenance, sedimentary environment and climate was studied by means of mineral composition, boron content and XRD diffraction experiments and measurement of boron isotopes by thermoelectric ionization mass spectrometry.The factors affecting boron isotopic fractionation of salt rock deposits in Qingjiang Basin are analyzed. It is found that multiple sources may be one of the reasons for the change of δ11B, and the preferential adsorption of 10B by clay minerals leads to the decrease of δ11B value. At the same time, the change of salt mineral sequence and the decrease of Illite indicate that the overall climate change in this period is from drying and cold to warmth and damp, which may lead to the change of provenance with the diversion of rivers, thus affecting the change of δ11B value.
Origin of Boron and Brine Evolution in Saline Springs in the Nangqen Basin, Southern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The Nangqen Basin is a typical shearing-extensional basin situated in the hinterland of the Tibetan Plateau. It contains abundant saline spring resources and abnormal trace element enrichments. The hydrochemical molar ratios (Na/Cl, B/Cl, and Br/Cl), H-O isotopes, and B isotopes of the saline spring were systematically measured to describe the evolution of brines and the origin of the boron. The sodium chloride coefficient of the water samples in this area is around 1.0 or slightly greater, which is characteristic of leached brines; the highest B/Cl value is 4.25 (greater than that of seawater). The Na/Cl, B/Cl, and Br/Cl values of the springs are clear indicators of a crustal origin. The δ 18 O values of the spring waters range from −12.88 ‰ to −16.05 ‰ , and the δ D values range from −100.91 ‰ to −132.98 ‰ . Meanwhile the B content and B isotopes in the saline springs are in the ranges of 1.00 to 575.56 ppm and +3.55 ‰ to +29.59 ‰ , respectively. It has been proven that the saline springs in the Nangqen Basin are a type of leached brine, suggesting that the saline springs have a terrestrial origin. The δ 11 B-B characteristics of the springs are similar to those observed in the Tibetan geothermal area, indicating that these two places have the same B source. Moreover, they have a crustal origin (marine carbonate rocks and volcanic rocks) instead of a deep mantle source.

Abstract:Da Qaidam Lake (DQL) and Xiao Qaidam Lake (XQL), located in close proximity with similar geological and hydrological settings, represent quintessential lakes harboring enriched boron (B) deposits on the northern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). However, a significant disparity in both B concentrations and isotope values between these two lakes has emerged, showcasing distinct evolutionary trends in their B isotopes over the past three decades. The underlying mechanisms and evolutionary processes driving these variations remain ambiguous. This study elucidates the hydrochemical characteristics and δ 11 B values for brines, geothermal springs, and river waters around the DQL-XQL, concurrently monitoring hydrogeochemical parameters in XQL and Tataleng River at a monthly temporal scale. Our findings corroborate that: (1) The δ 11 B values of XQL have markedly increased from 0.52‰ to 2.81‰, while those of DQL have decreased from 6.17‰ to 4.16‰, exhibiting diametrically opposed isotopic trends in the face of warming–wetting climate change on the QTP. (2) Spatially, B concentration and δ 11 B values in the low salinity region of DQL are predominantly influenced by the redissolution of B-rich sediments, witnessing inconspicuous changes in the high salinity region. Temporally, the δ 11 B values of DQL experienced considerable fluctuations, ranging from 2.52‰ to 10.81‰ in the early 1990s, attributed to isotopic fractionation (solid-liquid separation) resulting from borate mining activities. After more than 30 years of recovery, its B isotope values have stabilized in recent years. (3) On a monthly time scale, δ 11 B values of XQL and Tataleng River waters exhibited pronounced seasonal variations regulated by water residence time and the formation of secondary minerals, manifesting as high values in the dry season and low values in the wet season. Rainy or humid climatic conditions encourage an increase in weathering flux in B-rich areas, leading to a higher transport of resources into the terminal salt lake. Over a multi-decadal time scale, alterations in the hydrological budget and mean weathering flux induced by a warming-wetting climate may modify the proportion of contributions from various sources, thereby regulating the δ 11 B values of XQL and Laguo Co. (4) When employing B isotopes to investigate the salt lakes evolution and paleo-environmental changes, it is imperative to consider the influence of alterations in water chemistry and isotope driven by changes in source-sink processes resulting from climate changes or tectonic movements.

Abstract:The geological setting,climate conditions,regional hydrogeochemistry,isotope geochemistry and boron geochemical characteristics of typical borate deposit in Zhacang Chaka and Da Qaidam salt lake on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau were presented.The results show that borate deposit of Zhacang Chaka and Da Qaidam salt lake controlled by its own inherent geochemical characteristics and external conditions,especially tectonic movement,arid climate since Quaternary period and abundant provenances,the formation of salt lake-type borate deposits on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau are the results of coupled inherent and external conditions.Based on the study of minerogenetic conditions and pattern of borate deposits in Zhacang Chaka and Da Qaidam salt lake,we establish a minerogenetic pattern of borate deposits on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau as a high mountain-deep basin-shallow water pattern.
Solute Sources and Mechanism of Boron Enrichment in the Tataleng River on the Northern Margin of the Qaidam Basin

Abstract:The Tataleng River (TTR), as an important tributary of the Da Qaidam Salt Lake (DQSL) and Xiao Qaidam Salt Lake (XQSL) in the Qaidam Basin (QB), has an exceptionally high B content. However, the solute sources and the provenance of B in the TTR are still unclear, which significantly hinders a deeper understanding of the source–sink processes of the boron deposits in the QB. In this study, water samples were collected from tributaries, mainstreams, mud volcanoes, hot springs, and rainwater in the TTR area. Through hydrochemical analysis, forward modeling, and B isotope geochemistry methods, combined with the previous research results, some findings were obtained. The hydrochemical type of TTR is Ca–Mg–Cl, and the major mechanism of controlling chemical composition is rock weathering. The solute sources in the TTR are mainly from dissolution of evaporites (75.9%), atmospheric precipitation (20.8%), and a minor contribution from carbonates (3.1%) and silicates weathering (0.6%). The higher B content (0.89–4.30 mg/L, mean = 2.13 mg/L) and lower δ 11 B value (0.79‰–4.71‰, mean = 4.17‰) of the TTR indicate that the B sources are mainly from mixture of mud volcanic waters (56.19–199.98 mg/L, mean = 113.51 mg/L, − 1.26‰–2.22‰, mean = 0.85‰) in the upper reaches, and the deep groundwater near the Indosinian granite in the lower reaches. The significant difference in boron resources between the two lakes may be due to the enrichment of B in the late Pleistocene in the DQSL, which received exceptionally rich soluble B carried by the ancient TTR during an active tectonic period, while the weakening of tectonic activity and the diversion of the ancient TTR resulted in the supply of B with significantly reduced content to the XQSL. These results are helpful for a deeper understanding of the ore-forming mechanisms of the boron deposits in salt lake.

Abstract:The eastern/western Taijinar Salt Lake in Qaidam Basin is rich in lithium and boron resources. Chemical speciation of boron and lithium is conducive to identify the migration way and enrichment of heavy metals which might cause certain effects on the environment of salt-lake area. A total of 28 surface sediment samples were collected from the Taijinar Salt Lake in June of 2020 to investigate the distribution, speciation and sources of boron and lithium in salt-lake sediments. The results showed that the average content of boron/lithium was low with value of 1.6/3.4 µg kg−1, while that of the other elements in sediments ranging from 0.035 µg kg−1 (Cd) to 48.20 mg kg−1 (As) by following the order of As > Pb > Hg > Zn > Cr > Cd. Boron and lithium in sediments were mainly bound to Fe–Mn oxide and residual fractions with the average proportion of 29.87% and 35.36% for boron as well as 32.18% and 31.43% for lithium. Pb mainly existed in carbonate and residual fraction, while Zn mainly existed in the Fe–Mn oxide and residual bound with average value of 40.56% and 43.32%, respectively. Hg/Cr mainly existed in the residual with the average value of 58.68%/84.18%, while Cd mainly existed in the Fe–Mn oxide and residual fraction with an average proportion of 26.52% and 30.89%, respectively. As mainly existed in Fe–Mn oxide, residual, and organic fraction with an average proportion of 30.20%, 32.61% and 21.92%, respectively. Elements including Zn, Cr and Pb had a certain influence on the speciation of boron and lithium based on the correlation analysis. The enrichment of Cd, Cr and Pb might be mainly caused by anthropogenic sources. The findings of this study will provide some basic information on the important elements including lithium and boron in the salt-lake areas.

Abstract:The fluid inclusion composition of halite can help track chemical composition of ancient fluids and, thus, serves as a reliable index to analyze ancient brine in salt lakes. Qarhan Salt Lake (QSL) is the largest potash brine deposit in China. Although the mixing of modern river water and Ca-Cl deep water is widely accepted as potassium formation, the mixing characteristics in the time domain and driving factors of deep water are still unclear. Here, the chemical composition of fluid inclusions in primary halite samples collected from the ISL1A borehole in QSL was measured by LA-ICP-MS technology. The analysis results show that, during the formation stage of the S 4 salt layer in QSL, the main potassium salt layer, the contents of Ca 2+ and Sr 2+ in brine increased significantly. There is evidence confirming that Ca-Cl deep water is beneficial to the enrichment of potassium and the surrounding rivers generally develop terraces. It suggests that, during the formation stage of the QSL potassium salt layer, more Ca-Cl inflow water of the northern margin supplies the salt lake, inferring that it was driven by tectonic activities. In addition, the chemical composition of halite fluid inclusions shows that there is an anomaly in geochemistry at the early stage of salt formation in QSL. By combining the time of tectonic activities, it is inferred that the anomaly is not caused by tectonic activities but maybe caused by a salt-forming event. This work indicates that deep water and tectonic movement have a huge impact on the evolution of salt lakes. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the influence of deep water and tectonic activities on the salt-forming evolution stage of salt lakes when studying the salt-forming evolution stage of salt lakes and paleoclimate by using salt lake deposition.

Abstract:The isotopic composition of dissolved boron, in combination with the elemental concentrations of B, Cl and salinities in freshwater-seawater mixed samples taken from the estuary of the Changjiang River, the largest one in China, was investigated in detail in this study. Brackish water and seawater samples from the estuary of the Changjiang River were collected during low water season in November, 1998. Boron isotopic compositions were determined by the Cs 2 BO 2 + -graphite technique with a analytical uncertainty of 0.2‰ for NIST SRM 951 and an average analytical uncertainty of 0.8‰ for the samples. The isotopic compositions of boron, expressed in δ 11 B, and boron concentrations in the Changjiang River at Nanjing and seawater from the open marine East Sea, China, are characterized by δ 11 B values of −5.4‰ and 40.0‰, as well as 0.0272 and 4.43 mg B/L, respectively. Well-defined correlations between δ 11 B values, B concentrations and Cl concentrations are interpreted in terms of binary mixing between river input water and East Sea seawater by a process of straightforward dilution. The offsets of δ 11 B values are not related to the contents of clastic sediment and to the addition of boron. These relationships favor a conservative behavior of boron at the estuarine of the Changjiang River.

Abstract:Abstract The pinnoite deposit occurred in the lakebed of Da Qaidam Salt Lake in Qaidam Basin is rare in the world. This study focused on the pinnoite, ulexite and hydroboracite from Da Qaidam Salt Lake, through multi-index methods including mineralogy and geochemistry, aiming to interpret the mechanism of pinnoite and other borate minerals. The results showed that pinnoite as well as ulexite and hydroboracite in lakeside are formed in the lake environment with specific hydrogeochemical conditions (e.g., alkaline brine, hydrochemical types, boron concentration, boron ions, Mg/Ca ratio, dilution and mixing mechanism). The borate formation was controlled by a coupling mechanism, i.e., the inherent geochemical characteristics and the external conditions.

Abstract:Brine groundwater in Quaternary salt lakes is widely exploited to extract potassium, lithium, and boron; the complex hydrogeological parameters of brine aquifers could cause significant difficulties in brine resource assessment and exploitation. However, the origin and porosity of brine aquifers remain unclear. This study presents an approach that utilizes geochemical indicator analysis with paleogeographic reconstruction to better assess porosity in salt lake aquifers. We identified 15 representative boreholes in Mahai Salt Lake, and the lithology, porosity, and chloride contents of their respective sediments, the pore porosity of each borehole in the study area ranges from 38.17 to 0.51%, the average chloride content of each borehole ranges from 26.63 to 38.74%, found that the vertical porosity fluctuations of halite deposits were significantly larger than those of detrital deposits, the sediments in the boreholes consisted predominantly of halite-containing debris or fine-debris-containing halite, reflecting the paleoenvironmental signatures of the salt lake. According to lithology and sedimentary environment, four brine aquifers were classified and the chloride and porosity distribution characteristics in the I–IV brine aquifers were further illustrated. Based on information of paleolake evolution in Qaidam Basin, we established a conceptual model to identify the impact factors for the porosity distribution pattern in the I–IV brine aquifers.

Abstract:The Nalenggele River Catchment (NRC) is the largest river sourced from the northern slope of the Eastern Kunlun Mountains (EKM). The NRC terminates in the Qaidam Basin and feeds tail salt lakes. The river–groundwater system (freshwater) and the terminal salt lakes display high concentrations of B and Li, ranking the Qaidam Basin as a world–class mineral system. However, the source, pathway, and enrichment mechanism of these elements remain unclear. In this study, the B and Li isotopes from rivers and groundwater from mountain to basin were used to trace their origin and evolution processes. B and Li are found in high concentrations even in river and groundwater with low total dissolved solids (TDS), with average concentrations tens to hundreds times higher than those of natural freshwater systems. The observed B and Li isotopic footprints are significantly depleted in heavy isotopes in the NRC if compared to other geological systems dominated by natural weathering processes. Following the confluence of one of the main tributaries of the Hongshui River (HSR) sourced from the EKM, the B and Li concentrations increase sharply, while the δ11B and δ7Li values gradually decrease. This study indicates that the mechanism accounting for the B and Li endowment of the river–groundwater–salt lake system is mainly related to the Li–B fertility of the sources (deep fluids and country rocks), favorable tectonic conduits for water circulation, and high evaporation rates. Specifically, the deep fluids upwelling is responsible for the sourcing of B and Li. These fluids are then discharged to the river and groundwater through geothermal springs developing along deep faults or within volcanic craters. In this frame, the river and groundwaters act as carriers, and input B and Li into the lake basin. Ultimately, B and Li undergo an evaporation–mediated fractionation ending with the formation of brines and eventually accounting for the formation of the world–class Li–B salt lake deposits.

Abstract:The reserves of nitrate (NO3-) mineral resources in the Turpan-Hami Basin in Xinjiang rank second after those in the Atacama Desert in Chile, South America. Considerable attention has been devoted to nitrogen (N) sources of NO3- deposits in recent years due to the increase in demand for NO3- fertilizers in agriculture and chemical industries. However, although the potassium nitrate (KNO3) deposits in the Uyunbulak salt lake in the Kumish basin, Xinjiang, China, have received increasing attention from numerous researchers in recent years, they all focused on the study of nitrate sources and agreed that the nitrate source in the Kumish basin is mainly atmospheric sedimentation. Studies on their water sources are scarce; for salt lake nitrate deposits, water supply also plays a crucial role in the genesis of the deposit. As a sensitive indicator, a boron isotope is often used to indicate water bodies from different sources. However, the presence of NO3- ions in water will interfere with the determination of boron isotopes, so the research on boron isotopes in nitrate salt lakes has been hindered. In this study, the three-step ion exchange method published by Ma et al. (2020) was used to eliminate the influence of NO3- ions in water on boron isotope determination, so as to reveal the water supply of Uyunbulak Salt Lake in Kumish basin by using boron isotopes which are more sensitive to water types. In this study, ice and snow meltwater, fissure water, groundwater, and surface water samples were collected from the Kumish basin and analyzed for the determination of boron (B) isotopic and hydrochemical compositions during the migration process of water bodies to reveal the recharge relationship between the water bodies from the northwestern margin of the basin and the study area. The obtained hydrochemical composition results showed a gradual increase in the salinity of the water body from 556 to 7372 mg/L from the northwestern to the southeastern parts of the basin, resulting in a gradual change in the hydrochemical facies type of Uyunbulak salt lake to NaCl. This finding suggested that the water body migrates from the northwestern to southeastern parts of the basin. The results of B isotope composition indicated two types of water bodies from different sources, namely, the ice and snow meltwater of the Southern part of the Tianshan Mountains and groundwater of the basin, exhibiting B isotope composition ranges of 26.66–27.26‰ and 12.75–15.19‰, respectively. These two types of water bodies are mixed at the Uzong spring (Q1). The ice and snow meltwater in the mixed water accounted for 46%, while the groundwater accounted for 54%. The mixed water continues to recharge the Uyunbulak Salt Lake in the southeastern part of the basin.

Abstract:Some rivers on the northern slope of the eastern Kunlun Mountains in the Qaidam Basin, China, show very high concentrations of boron and lithium. Correspondingly, the salt lakes fed by these rivers show an unusual enrichment of boron and lithium, and become an important economic resource. The origin of boron and lithium has long been debated. The aim of this study is to analyze the water chemistry and hydrogen and oxygen isotopic composition of river water to understand the unusual enrichment of boron and lithium in the salt lakes of the Qaidam Basin. Oxygen and hydrogen isotope data show that the source of river water in the winter and summer originates from the Kunlun Mountain ice and snow melt water, respectively. The water chemistry shows that boron and lithium contents are high but little variable with seasons in the Nalenggele River and Wutumeiren River waters. By contrast, other rivers have much lower lithium and boron contents. Moreover, the contents of B 3+ and Li + in the river loads or bed sands show little difference amongst the rivers. This indicates that removal by adsorption or input by surface rock weathering is not the main controlling factor of the B 3+ and Li + variation in the rivers. Rivers with high B 3+ and Li + content are chemically similar to geothermal waters in the Tibetan Plateau. In addition, the source area of the Nalenggele River is located in a collision zone of the Kunlun Mountains and Altun Mountains. Large and deep faults can serve as conduits for geothermal fluids. Thus, deep geothermal waters in the source area can easily migrate to the surface and discharge as springs feeding the rivers. They are an important source of B 3+ and Li + to the rivers. The abnormally high contents of B 3+ and Li + in the Nalenggele and Wutumeiren Rivers also suggest that the geothermal source area may be a future target for boron and lithium resources. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
