Abstract:The balance between stomatal and mesophyll conductance has been reported to directly influence intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi), but it is unclear whether variations in stomatal and mesophyll limitations (l(sc) and l(m), respectively) affect WUEi during soil drought and rewatering. Limitations (l(sc), l(m) and biochemical limitation, l(b)) and WUEi were measured in Manchurian ash (Fraxinus mandshurica Rupr.) and Mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica Fish. ex Ledeb) saplings exposed to two levels of water stress (moderate and severe) and rewatering in this study. The primary limiting factors for photosynthesis among l(sc), l(m), and l(b) and their correlations with WUEi were assessed. Both l(sc) and lm increased with water stress, while l(b) decreased, and during recovery, l(sc) and lm decreased, while l(b) increased. Photosynthesis limitations directly influenced WUEi, with WUEi being larger after rewatering than during water stress, increasing as biochemical capacity weakened at the expense of diffusional limitations (l(sc) and l(m)). Stomatal closure was more limiting to net photosynthesis in Mongolian oak than in Manchurian ash during the drought and recovery treatments; consistently higher WUEi was measured in the former species, possibly due to a more developed root system and larger leaf hydraulic conductance and stem vessel diameter in the former species.

Abstract:Wasteful use and unreasonable management of water resources is one of the fundamental causes of many problems of desertification and environmental degradation in arid areas.From the point of increase WUE,reviewed the factors influencing interception,stem flow and soil evaporation.In arid areas,the percentage of interception loss may be small,but the role in redirecting water and nutrients in the root zone by stem flow is very significant,infiltration rate increase under the shrubs with higher litter and organic matter content,and the influence of scattered tree shade on soil evaporation appears to be common;The crust compacted by raindrop reduces infiltration also increase evaporation,but the role of algal crust is not very clear;Rainfall interception by surface rock fragments may be an important component of the water balance of the stone mulched fields,it also can increase filtration rate and reduce runoff and evaporation losses.However,the factors and their role affect hydrological processes in arid areas is not come to an agreement to some degree,need to have a comprehensive understand on larger scale.

Abstract:Water use efficiency (WUE) is key to linking the water, carbon, and nutrient cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the coupling between WUE and leaf nutrients is still poorly understood in subtropical forests. Here, the stable carbon isotope technique was employed to estimate the leaf-scale WUE of five common tree species (Castanopsis eyrei, Symplocos laurina, Machilus grijsii, Ternstroemia gymnanthera, and Rhododendron ovatum) in different habitat types (i.e., hillside, near the top of the peak, and peak) in a subtropical broad-leaf evergreen forest on the western slope of Wuyi Mountain, southern China. In addition, leaf carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contents were also measured to assess plant nutrient utilization and its relationship with WUE. From the hillside to the peak, soil water content showed a decreasing trend, whereas the soil total C, N, and P contents showed an increasing trend. Regardless of species, the leaf δ13Cp value and WUE showed an increasing trend from the hillside to the peak, mainly due to an increase in soil water deficit and light. The leaf N and P contents showed an increasing trend from hillside to peak due to an increase in soil nutrients, while the leaf C: N ratio, C:P ratio, and N:P ratio showed a decreasing trend. The regression analysis showed that leaf-scale WUE was positively correlated with the leaf N and P contents but negatively correlated with the leaf N:P ratio, especially for the three species (C. eyrei, S. laurina, and T. gymnanthera). These results indicated that the differences in soil water availability, light, and soil development resulting from different habitats have a significant impact on leaf-scale WUE and nutrient status on Wuyi Mountain. Therefore, there may be a close relationship between WUE and leaf nutrients, which would help us to better understand the water-, carbon-, and nutrient-coupled relationships for the evergreen broad-leaved tree species in this region.

Abstract:Water use efficiency (WUE, the ratio of gross primary productivity (GPP) to evapotranspiration (ET)) reflects the coupled relationship between water loss and carbon gain in the process of plant photosynthetic carbon assimilation. As a dominant tree species in arid area, Populus euphratica plays an important ecological role in slowing desertification. Here, continuous observations of carbon, water, and energy fluxes were carried out in Populus euphratica forest with eddy covariance (EC) technique in 2018. We systematically explained the variation characteristics of energy fluxes and WUE at different time scales, and explored the main controlling factors of WUE in drought-stressed environment based on the synchronous meteorological data. Results showed that the carbon exchange of the Populus euphratica forest ecosystem occurred mainly during the growing seasons (April–October). During this period, the entire ecosystem appeared as a carbon sink with the potential to sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide. The average daily WUE was 2.2 g C/kg H2O, which was lower than other temperate forests (2.57–6.07 g C/kg H2O) but higher than grassland, wetland, and cropland. We also concluded that an increase in carbon dioxide concentration (CCO2) and air relative humidity (RH) could promote the increase of WUE. Nevertheless, WUE was negatively correlated with air temperature (Ta), photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Additionally, WUE increased under moderate soil water content (SWC), but decreased due to the continuously rising SWC. WUE was more strongly affected by factors affecting water consumption than carbon uptake. Under the conditions of high temperature, strong radiation and low humidity in the summer, the growth rate of ET was much larger than that of GPP. This study not only contributes to our understanding of the carbon, water, and energy dynamics of the Populus euphratica forest ecosystem but also provides an important reference for ecological conservation and ecological restoration in arid regions.

Abstract:Summary Water use efficiency (WUE) represents the trade‐off between carbon assimilation and water loss in plants. It remains unclear how leaf stomatal and photosynthetic traits regulate the spatial variation of leaf WUE in different natural forest ecosystems. We investigated 43 broad‐leaf tree species spanning from cold‐temperate to tropical forests in China. We quantified leaf WUE using leaf δ13C and measured stomatal traits, photosynthetic traits as well as maximum stomatal conductance (Gwmax ) and maximum carboxylation capacity (Vcmax ). We found that leaves in cold‐temperate forests displayed 'fast' carbon economics, characterized by higher leaf nitrogen, Chl, specific leaf area, and Vcmax , as an adaptation to the shorter growing season. However, these leaves exhibited 'slow' hydraulic traits, with larger but fewer stomata and similar Gwmax , resulting in higher leaf WUE. By contrast, leaves in tropical forests had smaller and denser stomata, enabling swift response to heterogeneous light conditions. However, this stomatal configuration increased potential water loss, and coupled with their low photosynthetic capacity, led to lower WUE. Our findings contribute to understanding how plant photosynthetic and stomatal traits regulate carbon–water trade‐offs across climatic gradients, advancing our ability to predict the impacts of climate changes on forest carbon and water cycles.

Abstract:The research on vegetation ecological water requirements is concerned with multi-disciplines,such as ecology,hydrology,environtology,meteorology and so on.In this paper,domestic and foreign progresses in vegetation ecological water requirement were analyzed.Advantages and disadvantages of a variety of commonly methods were evaluated,which includes direct calculation method,indirect calculation method,water balance method and the combined method of remote sensing and geographical information system in practical application.Considering the character of the water shortage,little precipitation,degenerating vegetation and low coverage in northwest arid area of China,a new calculation method about non-pristine、non-full coverage and natural vegetation ecological water requirement based on remote sensing was introduced,which is proposed by FAO.The main problems and development trends in studying vegetation ecological water requirements were put forward.

Abstract:The effect of soil drought stress on water use efficiency was investigated by one-year-old Masson pine of different speices.The results showed that the WUE of each speices increased except class 464,23,75 during soil drought stress.Some speices increased relatively high such as class 83,127 and 38 etc.The promotion of WUE demonstrated that these speices of Masson pine could maintain relatively high photosynthesis productivity during the descendant of water.

Abstract:Understanding the water use efficiency (WUE) and adaptation strategies of plants in high-temperature and rainy areas is essential under global climate change. The leaf carbon content (LCC) and intrinsic WUE of 424 plant samples (from 312 plant species) on Hainan Island were measured to examine their relationship with geographical and climatic factors in herbs, trees, vines and ferns. The LCC ranged from 306.30 to 559.20 mg g−1, with an average of 418.85 mg g−1, and decreased with increasing mean annual temperature (MAT). The range of intrinsic WUE was 8.61 to 123.39 μmol mol−1 with an average value of 60.66 μmol mol−1. The intrinsic WUE decreased with increasing altitude and relative humidity (RH) and wind speed (WS), but increased with increasing latitude, MAT and rainy season temperature (RST), indicating that geographical and climatic factors affect the intrinsic WUE. Stepwise regression suggested that in tropical regions with high temperature and humidity, the change in plant intrinsic WUE was mainly driven by WS. In addition, the main factors affecting the intrinsic WUE of different plant functional types of plants are unique, implying that plants of different plant functional types have distinctive adaptive strategies to environmental change. The present study may provide an insight in water management in tropical rainforest.

Abstract:Water use efficiency (WUE) is a key indicator for predicting the impacts of climate change on ecosystem carbon and water cycles. Most studies have explored the changes in the response environment of WUE at a particular scale. Few studies have examined how WUE responds to environments at multiple scales, thus limiting our in-depth understanding of the cross-scale carbon and water cycles. In this study, we measured photosynthesis and transpiration in situ periodically and continuously from June to October 2022 in a community dominated by Artemisia ordosica in Mu Us Sandy Land, and analyzed the seasonal variations in WUE at leaf, canopy, and ecosystem scales. The results showed there were significant seasonal variations in leaf water use efficiency (WUEL), canopy water use efficiency (WUET), and ecosystem water use efficiency (WUEE). WUEL was large in June and small in both August and September, ranging from 0.73-2.98 μmol·mmol-1. Both WUET and WUEE were lowest in June and highest in July and August, ranging from 0.10-7.00 and 0.06-6.25 μmol·mmol-1. WUEL was significantly negatively correlated with stomatal conductance. WUET was significantly positively correlated with canopy conduc-tance and soil water content, and negatively correlated with vapor pressure deficit (VPD). There was a significant positive correlation between WUEE and soil water content (SWC10) in 10 cm soil depth. The structural equation model showed that SWC10 and air temperature affected net photosynthetic rate and transpiration rate by modifying stomatal conductance, and thus affecting WUEL. VPD and SWC10 affected WUET by altering transpiration. SWC10, air temperature, and VPD affected WUEE by regulating ecosystem gross primary productivity. The modelling of carbon and water cycles should thoroughly consider the path and intensity of the effect of environmental factors on WUE at multiple scales.

Abstract:Water use efficiency (WUE) is an important indicator of carbon and water cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about differences in water use efficiency at the leaf scale (WUELeaf) and ecosystem-scale (WUEECO) and response to environmental variables, particularly in plateau ecosystems with gradient effects. We obtained leaf carbon isotope data and calculated leaf-scale water use efficiency on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau through field surveys and literature collection and calculated ecosystem-scale water use efficiency based on remote sensing data (MODIS). The study analyzed the differences between leaf-scale WUE and ecosystem-scale WUE in terms of vegetation type and spatial distribution and explored the response of water use efficiency to changes in environmental factors at both scales. The results found that the two water use efficiency scales showed different vegetation type trends and spatial distribution. At the leaf scale, WUELeaf showed grasses (10.91 mmol/mol) > trees (9.55 mmol/mol) > shrubs (8.34 mmol/mol), and spatially as a whole showed higher in the western high altitudes (Grasses) than in the low eastern altitudes (Trees). In contrast, at the ecosystem scale, WUEEco shows trees (1.17 g C/kg H2O) > shrubs (1.05 g C/kg H2O) > grasses (0.53 g C/kg H2O), while at the spatial scale, the eastern low elevation region (Forests) is greater than the western high elevation region (Grasslands). Climate (MAT) and vegetation (EVI) factors are the most important environmental variables affecting the variation of WUE at leaf and ecosystem scales, respectively, on the Tibetan plateau. The effect of altitude on water use efficiency is not caused by the vegetation type, although the WUE varies among vegetation types. Conversely, the effect of elevation is influenced by the interaction between environmental conditions and vegetation. These results suggest that the appropriate water use efficiency scale should be selected for specific purposes in carbon and water cycle studies. When the focus is on the influence of climate on the carbon-water cycle, leaf-scale water use efficiency is more appropriate, while if the effect of vegetation, ecosystem-scale water use efficiency would be more appropriate.

Abstract:Hippophae rhamnoides (Sea buckthorn) and Caragana intermedia (Intermediate peashrub), which are nitrogen-fixing and perennial temperate shrubs, are extensively used in the agroforestry systems in the loess areas of China. In this study, artificially controlled water gradient experiments were carried out with both shrubs, based on four levels of water supply (normal precipitation, slight drought, drought, and extreme drought). The results showed significant impacts of drought on net photosynthesis rate, biomass accumulation, and biomass allocation in both species. Water use efficiency (WUE) varied with different species, scales, and water stress intensities. WUE at the leaf scale (WUEi) was highest under moderate water stress, while the WUE at the community scale (WUEb) decreased with increasing water stress. We observed alteration in the diel and seasonal transpiration of both species in response to water stress. The night-time transpiration accounted for a small but significant proportion of the water balance, and its importance tended to increase with increasing drought. Both species experienced water deficits under all treatments. Soil moisture of H. rhamnoides declined more severely than that of C. intermedia. The ratio of transpiration to evapotranspiration (T/ET) ranged from 50 to 80% for both species in the growing season. The T/ET and WUEi of H. rhamnoides were comparatively smaller under severe water stress but increased under moist conditions. Our data suggest that H. rhamnoides uses water resources more efficiently under favorable water conditions, and C. intermedia shows competitive advantages under drought conditions. Moreover, possible strategies to maintain water balance in the water-limited agroforestry systems are discussed.

Abstract:It is crucial to improve water use efficiency (WUE) and the transpiration fraction of evapotranspiration (T/ET) for water conservation in arid regions. As a link between carbon and water cycling, WUE is defined as the ratio of gross primary productivity (GPP) and ET at the ecosystem scale. By incorporating the effect of vapor pressure deficit (VPD) on WUE, two underlying WUE (uWUE) formulations, i.e. a potential uWUE (uWUEp = GPP.VPD0.5/T) and an apparent uWUE (uWUEa = GPP.VPD0.5/ET), were proposed recently. Both uWUEp and uWUEa can be estimated from eddy covariance measurements, and the ratio of uWUEa and uWUEp was then used to estimate T/ET. This new method for ET partitioning was applied to three typical ecosystems in the Heihe River Basin. Growing season T/ET at the Daman site (0.63) was higher than that at the Arou and Huyanglin sites (0.55) due to the application of plastic film mulching. The effect of leaf area index (LAI) on seasonal variations in T/ET was strong for Arou (R-2 = 0.74) and Daman (R-2 = 0.76) sites, but weak for Huyanglin (R-2 = 0.44) site. Daily T/ET derived using the uWUE method agreed with that using the isotope and lysimeter/eddy covariance methods during the peak growth season at the Daman site. The estimated T using the uWUE method showed consistent seasonal and diurnal patterns and magnitudes with that using the sap flow method at the Huyanglin site. In addition, the uWUE method can estimate ecosystem T/ET without scaling issues, and can effectively capture T/ET variations in relation to LAI changes and the abrupt T/ET changes in response to individual irrigation events. These advantages make the uWUE method effective for ET partitioning at the ecosystem scale, and can be used for water resources management by predicting seasonal pattern of actual plant water requirements to support irrigation strategies in arid regions.

Abstract:Leaf temperature is the guarantee for the plant to carry out the life activities and closely related to plants’ healthy growth and crops’ planting management. The accurate measurement of leaf temperature is significant to understand the physiological condition, guide farmland irrigation, select variety and forecast production, etc. The development of plant leaf temperature measurement and requirements of application in recent years at home and abroad were briefly summarized and reviewed in the paper. Firstly, the status of application research and achievements of leaf temperature were introduced from the methods of measurement and scientific experiments. Then it analyzed and compared the principle, advantages and disadvantages and measurement of several common methods in detail including thermal resistance measurement, thermocouple measurement, infrared temperature measurement, infrared thermal imaging measurement and the leaf temperature model. At last, some problems urgently needed to be solved and the development direction of the field were presented, which could provide a reference for the further study of the leaf temperature sensor.

Abstract:Efforts to develop effective climate strategies necessitate a better understanding of the relationship between terrestrial water and carbon cycles. Water use efficiency (WUE) has been often used to characterize this relationship, while the role of transpiration (T) in the variation of ecosystem WUE has been less investigated. Here, we partitioned WUE ET (the ratio of gross primary productivity (GPP) to evapotranspiration (ET)) into a two-component process, i.e., the ratio of gross primary productivity to plant transpiration, GPP/T, that is WUE T , and the ratio of plant transpiration to evapotranspiration, T/ET. Based on two GPP datasets (i.e., GPP based on the light use efficiency model or the vegetation index- NIRv) and the GLEAM ET dataset, this study investigated the role of T in the variation of WUE in the ecosystem level and how the role is affected by drought. We found that drought can lead to the change of ET partitioning, thus affecting the variability of WUE. The variability of WUE ET was dominated by WUE T . In general, the proportion of T increased gradually from humid to arid areas. To adapt to drought conditions, vegetation in arid areas tend to have a high stress resistance by increasing their WUE. We further found that WUE T has stronger seasonal stability than WUE ET . GPP dominated WUE ET variability in humid/sub humid areas, while ET and GPP jointly dominated WUE ET variability in semi-arid/arid areas. GPP dataset based on light use efficiency (LUE) could better reflect the impact of drought on vegetation. This study contributes to a better understanding of the change mechanism of ecosystem WUE and emphasizes the critical role of physiological process components in water-carbon cycling.

Abstract:The functional traits of leaves and their internal trade-offs have been the focus of ecologists as a powerful basis for revealing plant physiology and function, and ecological strategies. The consistency of the coupled relationship between leaf economic traits and hydraulic traits among trees, shrubs, and herbs in similar ecological environments has seldom been systematically explored. We explored coupling in desert plants of different life forms and their response to the soil environment in two tree species ( Populus euphratica Oliv. and Haloxylon ammodendron (C. A. Mey.) Bunge)), the shrub species ( Nitraria tangutorum Bobrov and Halimodendron halodendron (Pall.) Dum. Cours.), and herbaceous species ( Alhagi sparsifolia Shap. and Apocynum venetum L.) in the transition zone of the desert in the Ebinur Lake Basin, Xinjiang, China. Leaf and soil samples were collected to determine plant leaf economic traits, hydraulic traits, and soil factors. Regarding leaf economic traits, trees had higher in leaf mass per area and leaf thickness (LT). The leaf nitrogen and phosphorus contents were higher in shurbs than those in trees and herbs. Regarding hydraulic traits, shrubs had higher palisade parenchyma thickness (PT) and vein density (VD), whereas herbs had higher stomatal length (SL), spongy parenchyma thickness (ST), and leaf water potential (Ψ). In herbs, SL, ST, and Ψ had advantages, whereas PT/ST was the lowest. This study revealed an association between leaf economic and hydraulic traits in plants of different life forms in a similar ecological environment and provides a scientific basis for plant conservation strategies and ecosystem services value assessment and use in arid zones.

Abstract:Desertification is widely recognized as one of the most serious global environmental threats occurring in ecological fragile areas. To assess desertification at a regional scale is of practical significance in understanding environmental change and strengthening ecosystem management. We critically reviewed the development of desertification concepts, as well as common assessment methodologies. We emphasized desertification assessment objects and indicators, as well as scales. We showed that, compared to other indicators, indicators derived from vegetation information are more reliable and effective in desertification assessment. We proposed future research prospects on desertification assessment.
Analysis on water use strategies of natural poplar in Hunshandake Sandy Land, China

Abstract:<p>The past decades have witnessed the increasingly severe desertification and high sandstorm frequency in Hunshandake desert, China, which evokes extensive concern regarding the ecological and environmental effects on natural plant fields. Herein, natural poplars in this area are studied in this work to analyze the water use efficiency (WUE), water absorption source (WAS), water consumption of poplar and water use strategy (WUS). The results show that the intrinsically high WUE of poplar can be enhanced under water stress status. The 0‐100 cm soil water or underground water constitutes the main WAS. Poplar uses deep soil water or underground water when there is insufficient precipitation in rainy season, which, however, turns to use easily‐absorbed precipitation water after rainfall and lives through the growing period by switching water absorption positions. The unique dimorphic root system, adjustable WUE and adjustable WUS make poplar able to maximally use limited water resource, which is also the main strategy for its survival in arid and semi‐arid areas. The combined analyses help us to get insight into the survivability and adaptive ability of plants as well as to regulate the limited water resource. Abstract:Identifying the carbon–water relationship of plants helps to understand their adaptive water use strategies. The relationship between WUE and the water source remains uncertain in the hot-dry valleys with reservoirs. The leaf δ 13 C and soil and xylem water isotopes (δ 2 H and δ 18 O) were determined to identify the WUE and water source contributions, respectively, in Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit communities. We propose a source contributing score (SCS), calculated as a value for the contribution of water from different soil layers (a higher SCS value indicates plants use deeper water sources). The positive relationship between leaf δ 13 C and SCS (R 2 = 0.16, P = 0.022) and the negative relationship between leaf δ 13 C and topsoil contribution (R 2 = 0.21, P = 0.009) confirmed the close association of larger WUE with less reliance on shallow soil water. The redundancy analysis suggested a stronger connection between leaf δ 13 C and d-excess than leaf δ 13 C and topsoil moisture content, which emphasized the key role of soil moisture d-excess. Variation partitioning analysis (VPA) suggested soil properties and microclimate explain more than 89.8 % of the variations in tree water use. VPA also suggested different roles of microclimate and soil properties in explaining tree water use strategies. Findings broadened the understanding of the relationship between WUE and water sources and emphasized the key role of soil moisture d-excess in hot-dry valleys with reservoirs.

Abstract:Water use efficiency (WUE), defined as the ratio of gross primary productivity to evapotranspiration, is an important indicator of the trade-off between water loss and carbon gain. We used a biophysical process-based model to examine the relative importance of climate-induced changes in meteorological factors and leaf area index (LAI) on the changes in WUE in East Asia. Validation showed that our simulation could capture the magnitudes and variations of WUE at 18 flux sites in Asia. Regional results indicated that the highest WUE occurred in boreal forests at high latitudes and the lowest WUE in desert areas of China. Changes in meteorological factors negatively affected WUE in the northwestern, northern, and eastern study regions. Changes in LAI had determinant impacts on changes in WUE in most areas except for those with sparse or low-density vegetation (e.g., western interior China, southeast island countries) where meteorological factors dominated. We conclude that, aside from the impact of meteorological factors on WUE, climate-induced changes in LAI may play a prominent role in regulating WUE changes.

Abstract:Water-use efficiency (WUE), defined as the ratio of net primary productivity (NPP) to evapotranspiration (ET), is an important indicator to represent the trade-off pattern between vegetation productivity and water consumption. Its dynamics under climate change are important to ecohydrology and ecosystem management, especially in the drylands. In this study, we modified and used a late version of Boreal Ecosystem Productivity Simulator (BEPS), to quantify the WUE in the typical dryland ecosystems, Temperate Eurasian Steppe (TES). The Aridity Index (AI) was used to specify the terrestrial water availability condition. The regional results showed that during the period of 1999-2008, the WUE has a clear decreasing trend in the spatial distribution from arid to humid areas. The highest annual average WUE was in dry and semi-humid sub-region (DSH) with 0.88 gC mm (-1) and the lowest was in arid sub-region (AR) with 0.22 gC mm (-1). A two-stage pattern of WUE was found in TES. That is, WUE would enhance with lower aridity stress, but decline under the humid environment. Over 65% of the region exhibited increasing WUE. This enhancement, however, could not indicate that the grasslands were getting better because the NPP even slightly decreased. It was mainly attributed to the reduction of ET over 70% of the region, which is closely related to the rainfall decrease. The results also suggested a similar negative spatial correlation between the WUE and the mean annual precipitation (MAP) at the driest and the most humid ends. This regional pattern reflected the different roles of water in regulating the terrestrial ecosystems under different aridity levels. This study could facilitate the understanding of the interactions between terrestrial carbon and water cycles, and thus contribute to a sustainable management of nature resources in the dryland ecosystems.
