Adiopokine Levels and the Risk of Gastric Cancer: A Case-Control Study

Abstract:4582 Background: Adipokines are adipocyte-secreted hormones are associated with malignancies such as breast cancer. Adiponectin, one of the adipokines, has been reported also in experimental studies to inhibit tumor growth partly by a decrease in neovascularization. Most adipokines, however, have not been fully elucidated for the association with cancer, and few studies have been reported for gastric cancer. Methods: Blood concentrations of adiponectin, leptin, resistin, visfatin, and C-peptide, and body mass index (BMI) at diagnosis were measured in 156 patients with gastric cancer and 156 age- and sex-matched controls. Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals, and one-way ANOVA analysis was conducted to examine prevalence of each variable between >2 groups. Results: Leptin, resistin, visfatin, C-peptide, and BMI levels significantly correlated with the risk of gastric cancer on univariate analysis p = 0.0060, <.0001, <.0001, <.0001 and <.0001, respectively). Multivariate analysis demonstrated significant associations of adiponectin, resistin, visfatin, C-peptide, and BMI levels with the risk of gastric cancer (p = 0.0004, 0.0006, 0.0013, 0.0006 and 0.0051, respectively). Resistin, visfatin and C-peptide levels were significantly associated with risk of Stage I/II gastric cancer (n=79) as compared with the controls on univariate analysis (p=0.0002, 0.0002 and 0.0001, respectively). Adiponectin, resistin and C-peptide levels were significantly associated with Stage I/II gastric cancer on multivariate analysis (p= 0.0029, 0.0118 and 0.0018, respectively). The pathological stage of gastric cancer significantly correlated with leptin, resistin, visfatin, C-peptide and BMI levels (p= <.0001, <.0001, <.0001, <.0001 and <.0001, respectively). Conclusions: Adiponectin, resistin, visfatin, C- peptide, and BMI levels are risk factors for gastric cancer. Adiponectin, resistin and C-peptide levels may be biomarkers of early stage gastric cancer, relatively unaffected by cachexia. Leptin, resistin, visfatin, C-peptide and BMI levels may be biomarkers of the progression of gastric cancer. No significant financial relationships to disclose.
