Abstract:Extractant selection is the most important for the extraction treatment of phenolic wastewater from coal chemical industry. Highly efficient extractants are urgently needed. To our knowledge, we are the first to identified two sets of co-extractants, cyclohexanone&cyclohexane and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK)&cyclohexanone for the extraction of phenolic compounds, including polyhydroxyphenol, from aqueous solutions. In order to provide inspiration and guidance to future researches, it is essential to obtain the mechanisms that lead to the high performance of the two sets of co-extractants. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of the solvents before and after extraction shows that the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the extractants and phenols are established, contributing to the high performance. The effects of pH, temperature and salt concentration on the extractant performance were then studied. The extraction favors pH values of acidity and neutrality. Increasing the temperatures has negative influences on the extraction. The salt effect by putting inorganic salt can obviously enhance the extractant performance. Compared with the single extractant such as MIBK and diisopropyl ether (DIPE), co-extractants have significantly improved recovery rates of resorcinol and phloroglucinol. It is essential to learn if the two sets of co-solvents also have good performance in practical extraction processes for the treatment of industrial wastewater. Using the two sets of co-extractants, we carried out three-stage counter-current extraction experiments for the extraction of phenolic compounds from coal chemical wastewater. The concentrations of total phenols in the wastewater were reduced from 5915 mg/L to 246 mg/L and 281 mg/L when co-extractants cyclohexanone&cyclohexane and MIBK&cyclohexanone were used, respectively. We successfully obtained highly efficient co-extractants for the extraction of phenolic compounds, including polyhydroxyphenol.
