Abstract:The Hall effect is suggested to be responsible for decoupling of electrons and ions in plasma during magnetic reconnection. It leads to redistribution of charged particles during magnetic reconnection. In this paper, charge distribution brought about by the Hall effect during magnetic reconnection is studied by using compressible Hall magnetohydrodynamics numerical simulation. Decoupling of electrons and ions in plasma can be clearly shown in this numerical simulation result. The bimodal structure of electron distribution in the electron diffusion region as well as its motion during magnetic reconnection have been found and discussed.
Reconstruction of the Electron Diffusion Region With Inertia and Compressibility Effects

Abstract:A method based on electron magnetohydrodynamics (EMHD) for the reconstruction of steady, two-dimensional plasma and magnetic field structures from data taken by a single spacecraft, first developed by Sonnerup et al. (2016), https://doi.org/10.1002/2016ja022430, is extended to accommodate inhomogeneity of the electron density and temperature, electron inertia effects, and guide magnetic field in and around the electron diffusion region (EDR), the central part of the magnetic reconnection region. The new method assumes that the electron density and temperature are constant along, but may vary across, the magnetic field lines. We present two models for the reconstruction of electron streamlines, one of which is not constrained by any specific formula for the electron pressure tensor term in the generalized Ohm's law that is responsible for electron unmagnetization in the EDR, and the other is a modification of the original model to include the inertia and compressibility effects. Benchmark tests using data from fully kinetic simulations show that our new method is applicable to both antiparallel and guide-field (component) reconnection, and the electron velocity field can be better reconstructed by including the inertia effects. The new EMHD reconstruction technique has been applied to an EDR of magnetotail reconnection encountered by the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft on 11 July 2017, reported by Torbert et al. (2018), https://doi.org/10.1126/science.aat2998 and reconstructed with the original inertia-less version by Hasegawa et al. (2019), https://doi.org/10.1029/2018ja026051, which demonstrates that the new method better performs in recovering the electric field and electron streamlines than the original version.
A new Look at the Electron Diffusion Region in Asymmetric Magnetic Reconnection

Abstract:A new look at the structure of the electron diffusion region in collisionless magnetic reconnection is presented. The research is based on a particle-in-cell simulation of asymmetric magnetic reconnection, which include a temperature gradient across the current layer in addition to density and magnetic field gradient. We find that none of X-point, flow stagnation point, and local current density peak coincide. Current and energy balance analyses around the flow stagnation point and current density peak show consistently that current dissipation is associated with the divergence of nongyrotropic electron pressure. Furthermore, the same pressure terms, when combined with shear-type gradients of the electron flow velocity, also serve to maintain local thermal energy against convective losses. These effects are similar to those found also in symmetric magnetic reconnection. In addition, we find here significant effects related to the convection of current, which we can relate to a generalized diamagnetic drift by the nongyrotropic pressure divergence. Therefore, only part of the pressure force serves to dissipate the current density. However, the prior conclusion that the role of the reconnection electric field is to maintain the current density, which was obtained for a symmetric system, applies here as well. Finally, we discuss related features of electron distribution function in the EDR.

Abstract:Understanding electron kinetic processes is crucial for elucidating the energy conversion mechanisms in magnetic reconnection. Non‐Maxwellian electron distributions are strong indicators of kinetic‐scale processes near the electron diffusion region, yet they remain incompletely understood. Using in‐situ spacecraft data from 29 magnetopause reconnection events, we unambiguously identify a non‐Maxwellian capsule electron distribution near the electron diffusion region. This distribution comprises an elongated component parallel with the magnetic field at lower energies and a butterfly component (with peaks at pitch angles near 45° and 135° ) at higher energies. We provide evidence that these distributions are partly linked to electron trapping and preferential heating along the direction of magnetic fields. The parallel electric potentials needed for the parallel heating may be linked to kinetic Alfvén waves. These capsule‐like electron distributions are also found to generate whistler emissions. Our results suggest that these kinetic processes are prevalent in magnetic reconnection.

Electron Dynamics in Collisionless Magnetic Reconnection

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection provides a physical mechanism for fast energy conversion from magnetic energy to plasma kinetic energy. It is closely associated with many explosive phenomena in space plasma, usually collisionless in character. For this reason, researchers have become more interested in collisionless magnetic reconnection. In this paper, the various roles of electron dynamics in collisionless magnetic reconnection are reviewed. First, at the ion inertial length scale, ions and electrons are decoupled. The resulting Hall effect determines the reconnection electric field. Moreover, electron motions determine the current system inside the reconnection plane and the electron density cavity along the separatrices. The current system in this plane produces an out-of-plane magnetic field. Second, at the electron inertial length scale, the anisotropy of electron pressure determines the magnitude of the reconnection electric field in this region. The production of energetic electrons, which is an important characteristic during magnetic reconnection, is accelerated by the reconnection electric field. In addition, the different topologies, temporal evolution and spatial distribution of the magnetic field affect the accelerating process of electrons and determine the final energy of the accelerated electrons. Third, we discuss results from simulations and spacecraft observations on the secondary magnetic islands produced due to secondary instabilities around the X point, and the associated energetic electrons. Furthermore, progress in laboratory plasma studies is also discussed in regard to electron dynamics during magnetic reconnection. Finally, some unresolved problems are presented.
Study of near-Earth reconnection events with Cluster and Double Star

Abstract:Observations made by a unique constellation of Cluster (at 14-16 R-E), TC2, Goes10, and LANL spacecraft (near 6.6 R-E) have allowed us to study the details of three reconnection events in the middle of a thick plasma sheet with the reconnection X-line located unusually close to Earth (10-12 R-E). We use mapping along field lines with magnetospheric models adapted to magnetic field observations to confirm that the reconnection region mapped onto localized auroral brightenings. Using simultaneous observations in the inflow and outflow regions, we describe an encounter with a localized tailward Alfvenic jet produced by a short isolated reconnection pulse. A good correlation between intense E and ion [BV] indicates that the concurrent strong turbulence could not destroy the frozen-in ion behavior in the reconnection outflow. We find that a steady quadrupole-like distribution of the magnetic By component in the turbulent reconnection outflow extended far beyond the ion diffusion region and existed for several minutes. We demonstrate an apparent V-x flow reversal, formed owing to the reappearance (switch-on) of reconnection at another location, rather than to a continuous motion of the active X-line. Using the Liouville mapping technique, we show that the acceleration of outflow electrons, after the particles passed a potential drop of 180 V, is consistent with Fermi/betatron acceleration. We also suggest another interpretation of the energetic particle bursts at the onsets, to emphasize the role of seed population and explain the sudden burst as a consequence of changing magnetic topology.

Abstract:Using two-dimensional full particle simulation, the process of magnetic reconnection in collisionless plasma is investigated and the velocity distributions of ions and electrons in various districts are obtained. As shown by the results of calculation, the Hall current produced by the different characters of electrons and ions in the diffusion region gives rise to a quadrupolar distribution of the y-component of the magnetic field, By. The velocity distributions of ions and electrons deviate from the initial Maxwell distributions, and exhibit nonlocal multiple distributions. At the same time, the electric field generated by the magnetic reconnection leads to the acceleration and heating of the electrons in the vicinity of the X-point. Hence a high-energy tail is formed in the energy spectral distribution of electrons.

Abstract:A magnetic reconnection event with a moderate guide field encountered by Cluster in the near-Earth tail on 28 August 2002 is reported. The guide field points dawnward during this event. The quadrupolar structure of the Hall magnetic field within the ion diffusion region is distorted toward the northern hemisphere in the earthward part while toward the southern hemisphere tailward part of X-line. Observations of current density and electron pitch angle distribution indicate that the distorted quadrupolar structure is formed due to a deformed Hall electron current system. Cluster crossed the ion diffusion region from south to north earthward of the X-line. An electron density cavity is confirmed in the northern separatrix layer while a thin current layer (TCL) is measured in the southern separatrix layer. The TCL is formed due to electrons injected into the X-line along the magnetic field. These observations are different from simulation results where the cavity is produced associated with inflow electrons along the southern separatrix while the strong current sheet appears with the outflow electron beam along the northern separatrix. The energy of the inflowing electron in the separatrix layer could extend up to 10 keV. Energetic electron fluxes up to 50 keV have a clear peak in the TCL. The length of the separatrix layer is estimated to be at least 65 c/omega(pi). These observations suggest that electrons could be pre-accelerated before they are ejected into the X-line region along the separatrix. Multiple secondary flux ropes moving earthward are observed within the diffusion region. These secondary flux ropes are all identified earthward of the observed TCL. These observations further suggest there are numerous small scale structures within the ion diffusion region.

Abstract:Energetic electron spectra formed during magnetic reconnection between two laser-produced plasma bubbles are investigated by the use of two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. It is found that the evolution of such an interaction between the two plasma bubbles can be separated into two distinct stages: squeezing and reconnection stages. In the squeezing stage, when the two plasma bubbles expand quickly and collide with each other, the magnetic field in the inflow region is greatly enhanced. In the second stage, a thin current sheet is formed between the two plasma bubbles, and then, magnetic reconnection occurs therein. During the squeezing stage, electrons are heated in the perpendicular direction by betatron acceleration due to the enhancement of the magnetic field around the plasma bubbles. Meanwhile, non-thermal electrons are generated by the Fermi mechanism when these electrons bounce between the two plasma bubbles approaching quickly and get accelerated mainly by the convective electric field associated with the plasma bubbles. During the reconnection stage, electrons get further accelerated mainly by the reconnection electric field in the vicinity of the X line. When the expanding speed of the plasma bubbles is sufficiently large, the formed electron energy spectra have a kappa distribution, where the lower energy part satisfies a Maxwellian function and the higher energy part is a power-law distribution. Moreover, the increase in the expanding speed will result in the hardening of formed power-law spectra in both the squeezing and reconnection stages.

Abstract:We performed 3D Particle-In-Cell simulations to study electron acceleration in the electron dissipation region of asymmetrical electron magnetic reconnection driven by ultra-intensity lasers, which is similar to the Earth's magnetosphere reconnection process. Within the electron dissipation region, electrons exhibit a nonthermal distribution, and as the asymmetry increases, the power-law spectrum becomes steeper. Remarkably, the electron spectrum closely resembles a delta distribution, arising from the intense acceleration imparted by the reconnection electric field near the X-line. Both parallel electric field acceleration and the Betatron acceleration mechanism play pivotal roles in this reconnection process. Furthermore, as the magnetic reconnection asymmetry intensifies, the parallel electric acceleration mechanism becomes stronger near the X-point region, whereas the Betatron acceleration mechanism wanes, primarily concentrated in the outflow region.

Abstract:Quasi-single-helicity (QSH) states, characterized by a magnetic spectrum dominated by the innermost resonant tearing mode, are common to all the reversed field pinch (RFP) experiments. The internal magnetic field structure produced by the dominant mode is investigated for the QSH observed in the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) RFP in discharges with zero toroidal magnetic field at the plasma boundary. The reconstruction is based on an MHD model coupled to edge measurements of the magnetic field. The model discards pressure, which has little effect on the equilibrium magnetic profile of present RFP plasmas, but adopts a realistic toroidal geometry. The technique is the adaptation to the MST configuration of a procedure already applied in RFX-mod, but a more general radial profile for the current density is needed for an adequate reconstruction of the MST case. The emerging features are similar to those found in RFX-mod. The helical flux surfaces of the dominant mode provide, with a good degree of reliability, a basis for mapping kinetic quantities such as electron density and soft-x-ray emissivity.
Anisotropic Heating and Parallel Heat Flux in Electron-only Magnetic Reconnection with Intense Guide Fields

Abstract:Electron-only reconnection is a process recently observed in the Earth's magnetosheath, where magnetic reconnection occurs at electron kinetic scales with only electrons involved. Electron-only reconnection is likely to have a significant impact on the energy conversion and dissipation of turbulence cascades at kinetic scales. This paper investigates electron-only reconnection under different intensities of strong guide fields via two-dimensional fully kinetic Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations, focusing on electron heating. The simulations are initialized with a force-free current sheet equilibrium under various intensities of strong guide fields. The quadrupolar structures of the out-of-plane magnetic field and asymmetric structures of density are found to become narrower in space as the guide field increases. Electron velocities are considerably larger than ion velocities, and the motion of both species is notably affected by the strength of guide fields. Similarly to previous experiments studies, electron temperature anisotropy along separatrices is observed, which is found to be mainly caused by the variations of parallel temperature. Both regions of anisotropy and parallel temperature increase/decrease along separatrices become thinner with increasing guide fields. Besides, we find a transition from a quadrupolar to a six-polar to an eight-polar structure in temperature anisotropy and parallel temperature as the guide field intensifies. Non-Maxwellian electron velocity distribution functions (EVDFs) at different locations in the three simulations are observed. Our results show that parallel electron velocity varies notably with different guide field intensities and strong parallel electron heat flux is observed.

Ion and Electron Motions in the Outer Electron Diffusion Region of Collisionless Magnetic Reconnection

Abstract:Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are performed to study the coupling between ion and electron motions in collisionless magnetic reconnection. The electron diffusion region (EDR), where the electron motions are demagnetized, is found to have a two-layer structure: an inner EDR near the reconnection site and an outer EDR that is elongated to nearly 10 ion inertial lengths in the outflow direction. In the inner EDR, the speed of the electron outflow increases when the electrons move away from the X line. In the outer EDR, the speed of the electron outflow first increases and then decreases until the electrons reach the boundary of the outer EDR. In the boundary of the outer EDR, the magnetic field piles up and forms a depolarization front. From the perspective of the fluid, a force analysis on the formation of electron and ion outflows has also been investigated. Around the X line, the electrons are accelerated by the reconnection electric field in the out-of-plane direction. When the electrons move away from the X line, we find that the Lorentz force converts the direction of the accelerated electrons to the x direction, forming an electron outflow. Both electric field forces and electron gradient forces tend to drag the electron outflow. Ion acceleration along the x direction is caused by the Lorentz force, whereas the pressure gradient force tends to decelerate the ion outflow. Although these two terms are important, their effects on ions are almost offset. The Hall electric field force does positive work on ions and is not negligible. The ions are continuously accelerated, and the ion and electron outflow velocities are almost the same near the depolarization front.
The Influence of Boundary Conditions on the Distribution of Energetic Electrons During Collisionless Magnetic Reconnection

Abstract:We conducted 2-D particle-in-cell simulations to investigate the impact of boundary conditions on the evolution of magnetic reconnection. The results demonstrate that the boundary conditions are crucial to this evolution. Specifically, in the cases of traditional periodic boundary (PB) and fully-opened boundary (OB) conditions, the evolutions are quite similar before the system achieves the fastest reconnection rate. However, differences emerge between the two cases afterward. In the PB case, the reconnection electric field experiences a rapid decline and even becomes negative, indicating a reversal of the reconnection process. In contrast, the system maintains a fast reconnection stage in the OB case. Suprathermal electrons are generated near the separatrix and in the exhaust region of both simulation cases. In the electron density depletion layer and the dipolarization front region, a larger proportion of suprathermal electrons are produced in the OB case. Medium-energy electrons are mainly located in the vicinity of the X-line and downstream of the reconnection site in both cases. However, in the OB case, they can also be generated in the electron holes along the separatrix. Before the reverse reconnection stage, no high-energy electrons are present in the PB case. In contrast, about 20% of the electrons in the thin and elongated electron current layer are high-energy in the OB case.
Electron-only reconnection and inverse magnetic-energy transfer at sub-ion scales

Abstract:We derive, and validate numerically, an analytical model for electron-only magnetic reconnection applicable to strongly magnetized (low-beta) plasmas. Our model predicts sub-ion-scale reconnection rates significantly higher than those pertaining to large-scale reconnection, aligning with recent observations and simulations. We apply this reconnection model to the problem of inverse magnetic-energy transfer at sub-ion scales. We derive time-dependent scaling laws for the magnetic energy decay and the typical magnetic structure dimensions that differ from those previously found in the MHD regime. These scaling laws are validated via two- and three-dimensional simulations, demonstrating that sub-ion scale magnetic fields can reach large, system-size scales via successive coalescence.

While much past work has focused on fluctuations in the lower hybrid range of frequencies1, the fluctuation amplitudes are higher at lower frequencies below the ion cyclotron frequency. In the present study, we use linear gyrokinetic theory and a simple Krook collision model to examine the conductivity2 in the presence of a density gradient and constant magnetic field in a parameter regime relevant to the strong guide field case in MRX. A simple Fortran code is used to solve the resulting dispersion relation for the coupled drift and Alfven waves. A robust instability is identified in a broad parameter range. These growing modes are found to have a significant effect on the calculated gyrokinetic conductivity; thus this regime is identified as a promising area for further study with a more complex model. Abstract:Strong poloidal refueling asymmetry in the DIII-D tokamak is inferred from line radiation measurements. Synthetic diagnostics in neutral transport modelling coupled to gyrokinetic simulations illuminate implications for the plasma flow profile in the scrape-off layer of single-null beam-driven discharges. Recycling occurs primarily either on the inner or outer divertor legs, depending on the toroidal magnetic field direction. By reversing the toroidal magnetic field, the observed line radiation asymmetry is nearly eliminated or reversed. It is determined that, while relatively simple physics can describe the observed ionization asymmetry, predicting the overall brightness of the hydrogenic Lyman-α signal requires detailed simulation of the plasma and resulting turbulence. To this end, kinetic plasma simulations fully coupled to comprehensive neutral transport calculations - a novel capability - provide first-principles reproduction of Lyman-α observations on DIII-D.

Abstract:Electron dynamics and energization are one of the key components of magnetic field dissipation in collisionless reconnection. In 2D numerical simulations of magnetic reconnection, the main mechanism that limits the current density and provides an effective dissipation is most probably the electron pressure tensor term, that has been shown to break the frozen-in condition at the x-point. In addition, the electron-meandering-orbit scale controls the width of the electron dissipation region, where the electron temperature has been observed to increase both in recent Magnetospheric Multiple-Scale (MMS) observations as well as in laboratory experiments, such as the Magnetic Reconnection Experiment (MRX). By means of two-dimensional full-particle simulations in an open system, we investigate how the energy conversion and particle energization depend on the guide field intensity. We study the energy transfer from magnetic field to the plasma, ${\bf E}\cdot {\bf J}$ and the threshold guide field separating two regimes where either the parallel component, $E_{||}J_{||}$, or the perpendicular component, ${\bf E}_{\perp}\cdot {\bf J}_{\perp}$, dominate the energy transfer, confirming recent MRX results and also consistent with MMS observations. We calculate the energy partition between fields, kinetic, and thermal energy of different species, from electron to ion scales, showing there is no significant variation for different guide field configurations. Finally we study possible mechanisms for electron perpendicular heating by examining electron distribution functions and self-consistently evolved particle orbits in high guide field configurations.

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process in space and astrophysical plasmas that converts magnetic energy to particle energy. Recently, a novel kind of reconnection, called electron-only reconnection, has been observed in Earth's magnetosheath plasma. A defining characteristic of electron-only reconnection is that electron jets are observed but ion jets are absent. This is in contrast with traditional ion-coupled reconnection, where both ions and electrons exhibit outflowing velocity jets. Findings from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission observations and particle-in-cell simulations show clear signatures of electron heating in electron-only reconnection events, while ions are not heated or cooled in these events. This result is unlike ion-coupled reconnection, where both ions and electrons are heated to varying degrees. The ratio of electron to ion dissipation increases with the local magnetic curvature, indicating that the partition of heat into ions and electrons is dependent on the current-sheet thickness.

Formation of the Electron Inflow along the Separatrices During Collisionless Magnetic Reconnection

Abstract:In this paper, by performing two-dimensional (2-D) particle-in-cell simulations of collisionless magnetic reconnection in a Harris current sheet, we analyze the formation of electron inflow along the separatrices toward the X-line from the perspective of fluid. The results show that both the parallel electric field and mirror force can drive the electron inflow to stream toward the X-line. The speed of the electron inflow can reach about 4V(A)(where V-A is the Alfven speed based on the upstream asymptotic magnetic field magnitude and peak density in the current sheet). Although the contribution of the parallel electric field is much larger than that of the mirror force, the mirror force cannot be ignored. When the electron inflow streams toward the X-line, it is heated in the parallel direction. The resulted gradient of the parallel electron pressure leads to the attenuation of the electron inflow. We also investigate the effects of the density and temperature of the background plasma on the formation of the electron inflow. With the decrease of the background plasma density, the contribution of the parallel electric field becomes larger while that of the mirror force almost remains unchanged. With the decrease of the background plasma temperature, the contribution of the parallel electric field becomes larger while that of the mirror force becomes smaller.
