Abstract:The need to design structures for ever harsher environments, to greater heights and spans, with greater controllability and durability, and of greater economy and safety, calls for creative solutions by today's structural engineers. This paper examines the issue of fostering structural engineering creativity in students, which does not appear to have been discussed in the open literature. The paper begins with a brief discussion of creativity followed by an analysis of the design process as a creative process. This analysis identifies the deficiencies in the current approach of teaching structural analysis which emphasises the mastery of skills for quantitative analysis hut neglects the development of structural insight and an ability for divergent thinking. A number of measures which may be able to rectify these deficiencies are then discussed These include the imparting of qualitative-analysis skills in students, the use of structural paradoxes to develop problem-solving skills, and a stronger emphasis in teaching on links between structural forms and functional attributes and between different structural forms.

Abstract:Engineering Drawing is a basic course for undergraduates of science and engineering, which fully explains the principle, standards and the expression method of engineering drawing. To improve the student learning outcomes, it is important to cultivate and train the 3D thinking ability. Combined with the development innovative teaching measures, this paper present the teaching method and reform practice of teaching engineering drawing in our institute. The 3 years teaching practice shows that cultivation of 3D thinking ability can improve the students’ engineering drawing ability effectively and practically.

Abstract:Freehand sketching is a fundamental skill in mechanical engineering and many other engineering disciplines. It not only serves as a communication tool among engineers, but plays a critical role in engineering design and problem solving. However, as computer-aided drafting has replaced traditional drawing classes nowadays, the training of students’ freehand sketching skills has been almost completely eliminated in modern engineering curricula. This paper describes the attributes of freehand sketching and its roles in several essential aspects of engineering; in particular, in its roles in problem solving, of which current literature has ignored. Representative examples are provided to show students’ freehand sketching skills in problem solving in a foundational undergraduate mechanical engineering course. Pedagogical suggestions are made on how to teach freehand sketching to engineering students.

Abstract:With the rapid development of electrical engineering at home and abroad, it is in urgent need to foster talents with innovative spirit. The paper analyses the necessity and importance of cultivating outstanding innovative talents and further discusses the mode and measures for engineering subject. The paper puts forward some effective methods of cultivating innovative talents, such as adopting new mechanism to select talented person. The innovative talents can be divided into four categories: fantasy thinking talents, excellent SRT talents, professional talents, comprehensive talents.It also analyses some typical cases and primary results of these methods. Abstract:Graphics are used early to express design ideas. Early engineers were often painters, and their drawings pursued vivid images. However, such a drawing method requires a lot of time and effort, and this graphics technique is difficult to grasp by ordinary engineers. Until the “Descriptive Geometry” by Monge came out, the method of expressing the spatial object by orthogonal projection on the plane was adopted by the majority of engineers. With the development of computer technology, engineering graphics now have more expression approaches and can more effectively express innovative design ideas. The engineering graphics course should develop students’ capabilities of spatial imagination, machine expression, drawing software application, and preliminary innovative design. The cultivation of the first three abilities is relatively easy to achieve since these are the traditional teaching goal of the engineering graphics course, but the cultivation of innovative design ability is relatively difficult. This paper investigates the development of graphics technologies, classifies the graphics technologies according to the information dimensions, and studies the effect of different graphic technologies on the expression of innovative design. From the perspective of student learning, three transitions of the learning method to become an excellent engineer are required to achieve: from passive learning to active learning, from subject learning to project learning, from definitive learning to tentative learning. The teaching practice shows that, the innovative design based on graphic technology is an effective way to realize the transitions of the learning method, and the graphics technology has significantly cultivated students’ innovative design ability.

Abstract:Based on the historical experience and failure, and practical requirement, it is extremely important and urgent to cultivate the creative engineering talents. The authors analyze the major restrictive factors in training personnel, such as idealistic misunderstandings, shortage of high-qualified teachers, outdated teaching contents and demoded educational methods. As a result, some countermeasures are proposed, including: making the engineering educational target clear, constructing the professional staff, deepening the teaching innovation, establishing and improving the training mechanism.

Abstract:To solve the problem that the classroom teaching of mechanical drawing lacks innovation-oriented practical training,authors introduce small research projects into the classroom teaching.Four small open research projects are designed in the chapters of truncation and intersection,which asks students to propose their research ideas independently and to complete theoretical analysis,model making and defense,etc.The design principles,implementation and assessment of the research projects are further explored.The implementation of research projects not only improves the hands-on ability of students,but also enhances the innovation ability of students.

Abstract:With computer-aided design software widely used in engineering practice, traditional mechanical drawing teaching methods are obvious shortcomings in the effect of the culture of reading and drawing mechanical drawings, such as teaching by physical model or drawing exercises with tools. In this paper, the course hours of mechanical drawing is redistributed, then SolidWorks and AutoCAD computer-aided design software is integrated into the course teaching practice, so students' ability of manual drawing and computer graphics is dual-trained and students' learning enthusiasm and initiative are fully mobilized. Using this flexible teaching mode, teaching and learning are much easier, good teaching effect has gotten.

Abstract:As one of the channels to cultivate compound talents with innovative features, STEAM education, has attracted widespread attention from all walks of life. Engineering thinking, among the core qualities of STEAM education, has gained increasingly growing importance in the K12 stage. The main aim of the study is to analyze the training mode of children's engineering thinking with the concept of steam education. With "paper-cutting" as the theme of the teaching activity, this research selects 16 fourth-grade primary school students as the research objects and carries out three rounds of teaching activities under the framework of STEAM activities for the cultivation of engineering thinking capability. Through three rounds of iterations with the action research method, as well as the overall scoring table and the sub-item scoring table to conduct paired sample t-test on the data of the three rounds of the teaching process, it is found that STEAM education has a significant effect on improving children's engineering thinking capability.

Abstract:In recent years, the development of technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things has drastically changed the architectural market, raising the demands on architects by enterprises and institutions. The traditional teaching model of architecture majors struggles to meet the market's demand for professionally applied talents, necessitating reform. With the introduction of the new engineering talent training model by the Ministry of Education, the goal of educating students has shifted from a focus on theory and professional techniques to nurturing engineering talents with innovative spirit and practical skills. The cultivation of these qualities requires profound contemplation by architectural educators on how to train architectural talents who can meet societal needs, and put these ideas into action. Based on the concept of new engineering construction, this article first analyzes the problems students face in actual teaching and practical work. It then proposes suggestions for teaching reform specific to Architectural Design V, applying these reform measures to the education of senior students. This approach is beneficial in enhancing students' professional design abilities and innovative thinking, thereby improving the quality of applied talent training and teaching standards. This holds significant guidance value for the practical teaching reform of architectural courses.

Abstract:Creativity, communication skills, interdisciplinary sensitivity, and cultural and civic responsibility are vital skills and perspectives to inculcate in contemporary engineering students. A number of studies have demonstrated the benefits of exposing engineering students to arts, as studying arts and humanities can open up their minds to creative ideas from great minds outside of science and engineering. In most cases, engineering students are exposed to the arts by taking a few non-technical courses as electives. Many students view these courses as less important and irrelevant to their field of studies. Integrating the arts into the technical engineering curriculum is challenging but critical to engineering design, particularly in early years, and represents a natural opportunity. This paper discusses the approach taken by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa of exposing students to the arts through curricular and extra-curricular design activities. These include offering design challenges, a first-year engineering design course and summer internships. This paper also discusses the challenges that arise in delivering such curriculum and the impact of such exposure on the engineering students involved.
