The Cerebral Damage Induced by Chronic Alcoholism and Related Factors

Abstract:Objective To investigate the extent of the cerebral damage caused by chronic alcoholism and the related factors Methods 88 patients with chronic alcoholism were measured by the Halstead Reitan Battery Neuropsychological Test and brain CT scanning Results The index of the Brain Damage Quotient (DQ) of patients was 0 52±0 25 63 (72%) patients showed a moderate or severe degree of the impairment of cerebral function 71 (80%) patients showed a moderate or severe degree of the atrophy in cerebral white matter The degree of cerebral atrophy was 5 35±1 27,which was positively correlated to the maximum frequency of daily alcohol consumption,the age at the first hospitalization for compulsory abstinence from alcohol,the dosage of alcohol consumption during the period of alcoholic dependence,the years of alcohol dependence,and DQ Conclusions Chronic alcoholism can cause the massive damage to the cerebrum The various factors may be related to cerebral damage such as longer alcohol dependence period,greater consumption of alcohol,higher frequency of drinking,later age at first compulsory abstinence from alcohol,and fewer times of compulsory abstinence from alcohol
