Rapid deterioration and short shelf-life are the major hurdle to the commercial marketing of fresh-cut fruit. Abstract:Strawberries (Fragaria ananassa Duch.) are harvested at three different maturity stages, stored at 4 degrees C to 25 degrees C. The phytochemical and total phenolic content in strawberries differed among the three maturity stages during the evaluated storage period. Results showed that there was a generally slight increase in TSS and significant decreases in both TTA and TAA after refrigerated and subsequent shelf life at room temperature. With regard to the antioxidant properties, the results showed that less ripe strawberries had higher antioxidant capacity (DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays) than riper strawberries during storage and strongly correlated to the activities of detoxifying enzymes (SOD, CAT and POX). Due to the efficient antioxidant system, strawberries are beneficial to human health.

Abstract:As an environmentally friendly approach for fruit quality improvement, the effect of preharvest UV-C on the physiology of strawberry fruit during postharvest storage remains to be assessed. Strawberry fruit developed with supplementary UV-C were stored at room temperature for 2 weeks. Preharvest UV-C attenuated fruit postharvest senescence and altered phytochemicals composition. Higher ester titer was found in the treated fruit at harvest, whereas higher terpene and furanone contents were detected after 72 h of storage. At harvest, polyphenolics accumulated to a higher level in UV-C group, but the difference disappeared after 24 h of storage. Meanwhile, the intrinsic level of abscisic acid and the expressions of FaPYR1, SnRK2, and FaASR in the UV-C-treated fruit was enhanced at harvest but returned to a lower level as storage proceeded. This study highlights the time-dependent effect of preharvest UV-C on strawberry fruit postharvest biochemical indexes and the possible involvement of abscisic acid signaling factors.

Abstract:SummaryThis study investigated the aroma volatiles, sensory and chemical attributes of strawberry achenes and receptacle. Samples were subjected to chemical analysis in terms of total soluble solids (TSS), total acidity (TA), total phenolics, anthocyanin content, antioxidant capacity and volatile compounds. Descriptive tests indicated that fresh whole fruit had the best overall quality. Chemical evaluations revealed that the receptacle emitted more aroma volatiles but exhibited lower TSS, phenolics and antioxidant capacity than the achenes. Moreover, achenes plus receptacle contained higher levels of phenolics and antioxidant capacity and showed moderate aroma volatile profiles than frozen whole fruit. The processing of juice showed the higher loss of phenolics, antioxidant capacity and aroma volatiles. Achene induced a significant increase in phenolics and antioxidant capacity. Aroma volatiles were reduced by freezing. These results suggested that the fresh whole fruit puree exhibited better overall quality, which had better sensory attributes, more aroma volatiles and higher antioxidant capacity.

Abstract:Strawberry is one of the most favored consumed fresh fruits worldwide. However, the major constraint limiting future sustainable production and sales of strawberries is post-harvest decay. Thus, taking a deep look into the effective preservation measures including pre- and post-harvest techniques to retain freshness and inhibit the pathological spoilage of strawberries in the supply chain is of great significance and necessity. At present, relying solely on post-harvest technology is not enough to fix the aim of strawberry fruit preservation and longer shelf life. On the contrary, pre-harvest treatments could be extend shelf life of strawberry fruit and adapt to the diverse post-harvest environments. This review give the latest pre-harvest treatments, their effects on post-harvest quality and storability of strawberries, and develop the expectation of strawberries pre-harvest methods applicated in the future.

Effects of Nano-Tio2-Ldpe Packaging on Postharvest Quality and Antioxidant Capacity of Strawberry (fragaria Ananassa Duch.) Stored at Refrigeration Temperature

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Nano-TiO2-low-density polyethylene (NTLDPE) packaging was prepared, and the effects of NTLDPE packaging on quality and antioxidant capacity of strawberry fruits were investigated.RESULTS: With increased barrier properties, NTLDPE packaging quickly formed a relative lower O-2 and higher CO2 air composition in comparison with LDPE. It was also more efficient in maintaining the overall quality of strawberry fruit, as reflected by lower decay rate and weight loss, as well as retarding the decrease in firmness and titratable acid. Meanwhile, reactive oxygen species (ROS) including superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide in NTLDPE-packed fruits were 10.8% and 21.9% lower, respectively. Furthermore, the activities of antioxidant enzymes involved in ROS scavenging in NTLDPE-packed fruits were significantly higher at the later period of storage time. Anthocyanin accumulation was inhibited, whereas ascorbic acid and total phenolics contents were better retained and 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity was 13.2% higher in NTLDPE-packed fruit by the end of storage.CONCLUSION: These data indicate that the beneficial effects of NTLDPE packaging on postharvest quality and antioxidant capacity of strawberry are probably associated with the promotion of ROS scavenging and related antioxidant enzyme activities, and NTLDPE packaging together with refrigeration storage is a promising method for strawberry fruit preservation. Abstract:This study introduces an innovative approach for the valorization and protection of anthocyanins from 'Benihoppe' strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) based on acidified natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES). Choline chloride-citric acid (ChCl-CA, 1:1) was selected and acidified to enhance the valorization and protection of anthocyanins through hydrogen bond. The optimal conditions (ultrasonic power of 318 W, extraction temperature of 61 degrees C, liquid-to-solid ratio of 33 mL/g, ultrasonic time of 19 min), yielded the highest anthocyanins of 1428.34 mu g CGE/g DW. UPLC-Triple-TOF/MS identified six anthocyanins in acidified ChCl-CA extract. Stability tests indicated that acidified ChCl-CA significantly increased storage stability of anthocyanins in high temperature and light treatments. Molecular dynamics results showed that acidified ChCl-CA system possessed a larger diffusion coefficient (0.05 m(2)/s), hydrogen bond number (145) and hydrogen bond lifetime (4.38 ps) with a reduced intermolecular interaction energy (-1329.74 kcal/mol), thereby efficiently valorizing and protecting anthocyanins from strawberries.

Abstract:Perilla frutescens L. essential oil (PLEO) has antibacterial and antioxidant properties, which can effectively maintain the quality of fruits and extend their shelf life. In this study, sodium alginate and chitosan were used as wall materials, and PLEO microcapsule powder was used as the core materials to prepare PLEO hydrogel beads. The best results were obtained by using 2%w/v sodium alginate and 1.5%w/v chitosan as wall materials, with a core-to-wall ratio of 2:1 and homogenized for 15 min producing PLEO hydrogel beads with encapsulation efficiency of 82.61 %. For strawberries preservation, PLEO hydrogel beads preservation group had a better effect after 5 d of storage, showing a lower decay rate (15.71 %), better maintaining the hardness of 1.75 kg/cm2, and a weight loss of 3.29 %. Furthermore, organic acids and total phenols were retained more in this group, the number of microorganisms was significantly reduced, and sensory qualities were improved, especially taste and color. This study provides important insights into the application of natural preservatives in the food industry and promotes sustainable practices in food preservation.

Abstract:Fruits and vegetables are susceptible to fungal infections during picking, transportation, storage and processing, which have a high potential to produce toxins. Fungi and toxins can cause acute or chronic poisoning after entering the body. In the field of fruit and vegetable preservation, technologies such as temperature control, modified atmosphere, irradiation, application of natural or chemical preservatives, and edible films are commonly used. In practical applications, according to the types, physiological differences and actual needs of fruits and vegetables, suitable preservation methods can be selected to achieve the effect of preservation and control of fungi and toxins. The starting point of fresh-keeping technology is to delay post-harvest senescence of fruits and vegetables, inhibit the respiratory intensity, and control the reproduction of microorganisms, which is important to control the reproduction of fungi and the production of toxins. From the three directions of physical, chemical and biological means, the article analyses and explores the effects of different external factors on the production of toxins and the effects of different preservation techniques on fungal growth and toxin production in fruits and vegetables, in order to provide new ideas for the preservation of fruits and vegetables and the control of harmful substances in food.

Effects of Different Storage Temperatures on Shelf Life and Quality of Strawberry Fruit after Hot Water Treatment.

Abstract:Taking the strawberry fruit from an agro-ecological park in Cangzhou as the experimental material, the effects of different storage temperatures on the shelf life and quality of strawberry fruit were studied. After being treated with hot water at 42℃, the strawberry fruit was stored at (20-25)℃and (4 ± 1)℃, respectively. It was found that the weight loss, cell membrane permeability, titratable acid content and soluble solids content differed between different storage temperatures. At low temperature, the quality of the strawberry fruit was better, and their decay was delayed by 12 d, that is, their shelf life was extended from 2 to 14 d. After hot water treatment, the permeability of the cell membrane and the contents of titratable acid and soluble solids in the strawberry fruit increased. In summary, low temperature can better maintain the quality of strawberry fruit.

Abstract:Fruit preservation after harvest is one of the key issues in current agriculture, rural areas, and for farmers. Using chitosan to keep fruits fresh, which can reduce the harm caused by chemical preservative residue to human health. It also helps avoid the disadvantages of the high cost of physical preservation and the challenges associated with difficult operation. This review focuses on the application progress of chitosan in fruit preservation. Studies have shown that chitosan inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi, and delays fruit aging and decay. Furthermore, it can regulate the respiration and physiological metabolism of fruit, helping to maintain its quality and nutritional value. The preservation mechanism of chitosan includes its antibacterial properties, film-forming properties, and its effects on the physiological processes of fruit. However, in practical applications, issues such as determining the optimal concentration and treatment of chitosan still require further research and optimization.
Improving Fresh Strawberry Shelf Life and Quality by Using the Fresh‐Keeping Paper Embeded with Oregano Essential Oil and Tea Polyphenols

Abstract:The short shelf life of fresh strawberries limits its marketing potential, despite its valuable economic and nutritional benefits. An environment friendly fresh‐keeping paper was prepared with oregano essential oil (OEO) and tea polyphenols (TP) and used in the storage of strawberries. Results showed that, during the late storage period, the TP and OEO fresh‐keeping paper treatments reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) content by 29.04 % and 34.47 %, respectively, compared to the control samples. The treatments also reduced decay incidence, weight loss, epidermal microorganisms, and total anthocyanins content (TAC). Furthermore, the treatments reduced polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity, delay the color development, and maintain a better sensory attributes. Notably, OEO fresh‐keeping paper treatment not only increased the titratable acidity (TA) and total soluble solids (TSS) content but also improved the scavenging ability of reactive oxygen species by maintaining high levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity. These results demonstrated that fresh‐keeping paper treatment has the potential to extend the post‐harvest life of strawberries and improve their quality.

Abstract:The fresh fruit of juicy peach is famous for its admirable taste and rich nutrient, which is widely recognized by the market and consumers. Because of its own respiratory peak and the production of strong seasonal, it is liable to decay with the rapid deterioration, resulting in huge economic losses. As the continuous development of agricultural industry and social economy, the peach preservation technology for multi-directional ways have been explored through the detection of important physiological indicators (weight loss, hardness, soluble solids content, relative conductivity, respiratory strength, malonaldehyde content, polyphenol oxidase content and decay index, etc.) with a gradual understanding of the mechanism of fruit and vegetable decay, which has formed some practical methods in the actual production. Those methods are divided into three categories according to technical principles, which are named physical preservation methods (temperature control, air conditioning, adsorption materials, ultraviolet radiation and ultrasound, etc.), chemical preservation methods (calcium regulator, fungicide, coating technology and growth regulators, etc.) and biological preservation methods (plant-source Chinese herbal medicine, microbial antagonism bacteria and biological enzyme preparations, etc.), which have their own characteristics in the effectiveness, safety and economy. On this basis, the combined preservation methods have been investigated and developed after integration and optimization, which have obvious advantages, and are becoming the important future research trends of antisepsis and preservation of peaches. In this paper, the status quo, analysis methods, practical techniques and effect evaluation of domestic juicy peach preservation were summarized, which can provide scientific evidences for continuously improving the postharvest storage and transportation quality and economic benefit of the fruit.
Effects of resveratrol treatment on quality and antioxidant properties of postharvest strawberry fruit

Abstract:Strawberry fruit is one of people's favorite fruits. It has high nutritional value and health care effects. Strawberries lose their edible value quickly after being picked because of their thin skin, which is easily damaged. In order to find a method to maintain the quality of strawberries, the effects of resveratrol treatment on the nutritional quality and antioxidant metabolism of strawberry fruit were studied. The result indicated that 100 μM resveratrol was the optimal concentration to delay the occurrence of decay. Strawberry fruit treated with resveratrol delayed the decrease in firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), total phenolics content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), vitamin C (Vc) content,1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbezothi- azot-hiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging capacities. The malondialdehyde (MDA) content, hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) content, and superoxide anion (O2 •- ) production of control fruit were significantly higher than those of treated fruit. Strawberry fruit treated with resveratrol also increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) during storage. Therefore, resveratrol has been proved to effectively improve the nutritional quality and antioxidant properties of strawberry fruit. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Strawberry fruit is rich in nutrients, which is beneficial to human health. But strawberry fruit has high water content and soft tissue, which is easy to be damaged and decayed. Therefore, it is particularly important to find a way to maintain strawberry fruit quality. In this study, resveratrol has good antioxidant, health care, and antibacterial properties. Resveratrol treatment can maintain the nutritional quality of strawberry fruit and can be used as an effective method for strawberry fruit preservation.
Advances in strawberry postharvest preservation and packaging: A comprehensive review

Abstract:Strawberries spoil rapidly after harvest due to factors such as the ripening process, weight loss, and, most importantly, microbial contamination. Traditionally, several methods are used to preserve strawberries after harvest and extend their shelf life, including thermal, plasma, radiation, chemical, and biological treatments. Although these methods are effective, they are a concern from the perspective of safety and consumer acceptance of the treated food. To address these issues, more advanced environment-friendly technologies have been developed over the past decades, including modified and controlled atmosphere packaging, active biopolymer-based packaging, or edible coating formulations. This method can not only significantly extend the shelf life of fruit but also solve safety concerns. Some studies have shown that combining two or more of these technologies can significantly extend the shelf life of strawberries, which could significantly contribute to expanding the global supply chain for delicious fruit. Despite the large number of studies underway in this field of research, no systematic review has been published discussing these advances. This review aims to cover important information about postharvest physiology, decay factors, and preservation methods of strawberry fruits. It is a pioneering work that integrates, relates, and discusses all information on the postharvest fate and handling of strawberries in one place. Additionally, commercially used techniques were discussed to provide insight into current developments in strawberry preservation and suggest future research directions in this field of study. This review aims to enrich the knowledge of academic and industrial researchers, scientists, and students on trends and developments in postharvest preservation and packaging of strawberry fruits.
Preparation and characterization of quercetin@ZIF-L/GO@AgNPs nanocomposite film for room-temperature strawberry preservation

Abstract:Fresh strawberries are easily contaminated by microorganisms after picking. Therefore, how to effectively store and keep fresh strawberries has been a hot topic for scientists to study. In this study, we prepared a leaf shaped metal organic framework nanomaterial loaded with quercetin (Quercetin@ZIF-L) at first, which can achieve effective loading of quercetin (96%) within 45 min and has a controlled release effect under acidic conditions. In addition, by cleverly combining satellite graphene oxide @ silver nanoparticles (GO@AgNPs) with slow precipitation performance, Quercetin@ZIF-L/GO@AgNPs nanocomposite film with larger pore size and larger specific surface area was prepared by scraping method. The characterization data of water flux, retention rate, flux recovery rate and water vapor permeability show that the composite film has good physical properties. The experiment of film packaging showed that the fresh life of strawberry could be extended from 3 to 8 days, which significantly improved the storage and freshness cycle of strawberry. At the same time, the metal migration test proved that the residual amount of silver ion in strawberry met the EU standard and zinc ions are beneficial to the health, enriching the types of high-performance fresh-keeping materials and broadening the application.

Abstract:In this study, the casting method was used to make chitosan (CS)/corn starch/cinnamaldehyde film, and the preservation performance of the film was examined. The results showed that the tensile strength of the film can reach to 31.24 ± 0.22 MPa when the mass ratios of CS, corn starch, and glycerin were 2.5%, 7%, and 0.5% respectively. The addition of cinnamaldehyde made the films have great inhibitory effect on Botrytis cinerea, Rhizopus, and Escherichia coli. In particular, the film had a significant fresh-keeping effect on strawberries, which reduced the loss of nutritional value, when aiming at soluble solids, titratable acid value, weight loss rate, and other indexes of strawberries. Thus, the films can slow down the physiological changes of strawberries and extend their shelf life to 11 days. Therefore, this work demonstrates the noteworthy potential of these novel films, incorporating natural antimicrobial compounds as innovative solutions to be used in active food packaging to extend the shelf-life of food products.

Abstract:In this study, we employed electrospinning to fabricate polylactic acid (PLA)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/chitosan (CS) composite fibers containing different CS contents and examined the ability of these fibers for strawberry preservation for the first time. The experimental results showed that as CS content increased, the mechanical properties, solubility, and swelling ratio of the fiber films first improved and then degraded, with peak values being achieved at a CS content of 7 wt%. The antimicrobial activity test results showed that as CS content increased, the antimicrobial activity of the composite fiber films against four microorganisms increased and the activity was the best when the CS content was 7 wt%. In addition, the composite fibers exhibited better antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative and -positive bacteria than against molds. Moreover, the fibers exhibited better antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus than against Escherichia coli. The preservation experiments showed that the nanocomposite fibers containing different CS contents exhibited good preservation effects for strawberries, with the fiber containing 7 wt% CS showing the best results. Thus, these fibers can delay the physiological changes in strawberries and extend their shelf life and therefore have important potential applications for fruit and vegetable preservation in the future.
