Abstract:A new method was proposed for quasi-static deployment analysis of deployable space truss structures. The structure is assumed a rigid assembly, whose constraints are classified as three categories:rigid member constraint, joint-attached kinematic constraint and boundary constraint. And their geometric constraint equations and derivative matrices are formulated. The basis of the null space and M-P inverse of the geometric constraint matrix are employed to determine the solution for quasi-static deployment analysis. The influence introduced by higher terms of constraints is evaluated subsequently. The numerical tests show that the new method is efficient.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the theory and algorithm of complicated unstable deployable space trusses. Taking the Cartesian coordinates of ideal truss joint as unknown variables, the geometric constraint equations for complicated unstable deployable space truss are derived. The essential characteristics for quasi-static motion are illustrated. The stabilization condition and the object function are introduced and the properties of the structure at limit stable state are highlighted. The influence of the quadratic terms of the geometric constraints is also discussed. Numerical examples are provided to verify the present method and algorithm.

Abstract:The nonlinear static behavior analysis of the structure is an important issue for structural analysis. Vector mechanics of structure (VMS) is a newly developed method for structural behavior analysis, especially for the computation of large deformation and large displacement, which involves the geometric nonlinearity, material nonlinearity and boundary nonlinearity. The structural behavior analysis using VMS is a kind of simulation for the reality. For static analysis, the loading rate should be very slow. In another way, we may add damping into the dynamic analysis for obtaining the static solutions. Furthermore, due to that explicit integration is deployed in VMS, the time increment for integration is critical for the computation convergence. Therefore, it is worthy to address the methods for a quick and efficient solution of static problems using VMS. This paper derives the analysis formulas for 3D rod element in VMS. The geometrical nonlinearity and the material nonlinearity are analyzed. The nonlinear behavior of a space truss is simulated, and the static solution is compared with the result by the finite element software ANSYS. The problems concerned in the numerical algorithm are discussed and a reference formula of the critical time increment for the space truss analysis is proposed. It proves that the method of VMS can achieve high accuracy for nonlinear static analysis, with the superiority of simple and systematical computation programming. The critical time increment obtained by the reference formula agrees well with the actual value. The computation efficiency for static solution could be enhanced by increasing the material density and damping factor.

Abstract:The position constraint violation problem of quasi-static deployment simulation was firstly proposed for deployable space truss. According to the violation stabilization of constrained dynamical system and generalized inverse theorem, the least norm and least square solution of violations were used to correct the position violation, which reduce violation greatly and make deploying configuration simulation more accurately. The developed algorithm proved the effective and the reliable by a series of numerical results.

Abstract:It was incorrect to take a practical space grid structures as the model for mechanics analysis, although this method was popularly used for design at present, because the structural internal forces and displacements at the end of do not relate to the method as well as the process. Classical finite element method has not come up with an analysis method and formula to solve this problem. A new analysis the construction process internal forces and displacements superimposed analysis method, which improves the classical finite element method and considers the method and process, was proposed as a analysis method for space grid structures. The member internal forces, joint displacements and restraint forces of the space grid structures in every stage of can be calculated by this analysis method. By means of this analysis the calculation results of a barrel vault erected by slide method are more accurate than those by the popular analysis method.

Abstract:Deployable truss driven with twist springs is extensively used in space missions, and its key components are composed of thin-wall tubular members of high ratio of stiffness to density and its articulate joints consist of specialized rotation springs and components of high ratio of strength to density. In a number of members both ends are set with twist springs in planar direction, constituting a complicated assembly which can deploy and/or retract in high synchronous and harmonious way. According to the essential construction and structural properties, reasonable assumptions were presented and the reduced linear elastic stiffness matrix was formulated for the macro-element of beam with twist springs attached at both ends. Based on the bend theorem of beam and displacement shape function, the consistent mass matrix was developed directly for the macro-element. The two matrices can be used for the structural analysis of deployable space truss with twist springs activated. The method is demonstrated to be effective by a numerical example.

Abstract:In order to analyze the nonlinear static performance of space trusses,this paper introduces ramp load and large virtual damping into the vector mechanics of structure(VMS)to make the structure stay static balance during the loading phase.By simplifying the vibration of every space point,the approximate vibrating period of the space point is obtained.Using five time points to depict the minimum period,the critical time increment for static analysis of space trusses is obtained.This paper conducts the static analysis of a star-shaped space truss,considering the geometry and material nonlinearity.The results obtained by VMS and that by software ANSYS are compared.It indicates that analysis using the vector mechanics of structure is of high accuracy,and the calculation program is very concise.The calculating method of the critical time increment is verified,and the critical time increment agrees well with the actual value of the calculation program.

Abstract:In order to obtain accurate spatial stresses of box girder with a small number of elements, an analytical method for large-section PC box girders is proposed. A higher order displacement function in the axial direction is introduced, and the section composition is considered. Taking the Hangzhou Bay Bridge as an example, both 3-D solid FEM and the proposed method are compared. The results indicate that high accuracy can be achieved with a small number of elements by using the proposed method.

Abstract:The moving process of deployable space truss structures was analyzed with the Moore-Penrose generalized inverse matrix.Dynamic equations of deployable space truss structures were formulated with Cartesian coordinates of the idealized truss joint as variables.Integration the constraint equation into the dynamic equations yields a group of dynamic equations with no coefficients,and the number of the equations is the same as that of the structure's degree of freedom.The constraint violations of the numerical solution were modified using an active modifying method.A practical mathematical algorithm was presented to formulate the constraint equations and the relevant Jocobi matrices,and to simulate the constraint conditions of the structural deployment.Programmed simulation shows that the method is correct and effective.

Abstract:Deployable structure technology has been used in aerospace and civil engineering structures very popularly. This paper reported on a recent development of numerical approaches for the kinematic analysis of the deployable truss structures. The dynamic equations of the constrained system and the computational procedures were summarized. The driving force vectors of the active cables considering the friction force were also formulated. Three types of macroele-ments used in deployable structures were described, including linear scissor-link element, multiangular scissor element, and rigid-plate element. The corresponding constraint equations and the Jacobian matrices of these macroelements were formulated. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach are illustrated with numerical examples, including a double-ring deployable truss and a deployable solar array.

Abstract:This paper deals with the shape analysis for truss structures with the nonlinear constraint conditions of homologous deformation.The proposed structural shape analysis with the nonlinear constraint conditions of homologous deformation is presented,based on the structural shape analysis with the linear constraint conditions of homologous deformation.The nodal coordinates of structure can be divided into three groups: nodal coordinates under nonlinear constraint conditions of homologous deformation;free nodal coordinates and nodal coordinates under boundary constraint.Then the existence condition of solution for basic equation,which includes the proposed constraint conditions of nonlinear homologous deformation,is expressed as a set of nonlinear equations with variables of nodal coordinates under nonlinear constraint conditions of homologous deformation.The formulation is presented for the first order derivation of general matrix to its variables in oder to solve the nonlinear equation. After the solution of the nonlinear equations by Newton-Raphson method,the final shape is found out.The validity of the proposed method is verified by numerical examples concerned with elastic planar truss.
Non-linear force method for buckling path analysis of space trusses with Vector Form Intrinsic Finite Element

Abstract:In path-tracing analysis for the post-buckling process of space trusses,the number of independent inextensional mechanisms increases at the limit point.Therefore,to trace the postbuckling equilibrium paths,both the deformation of components and the mechanism-displacement should be taken into consideration.A new explanation of the buckling equilibrium path is clarified in this paper,which indicates that the buckling equilibrium path is the intrinsic attribute of the structures,only related to the locations and directions of the external loads.Consequently,a buckling path analysis strategy is developed,in which the non-linear force method (NFM) and Vector Form Intrinsic Finite Element (VFIFE) are used in the predictor and corrector steps,respectively.Predictor paths that are tangent to the directions along the equilibrium path are constructed,and corrector control is used for accurate tracking of the post-buckling equilibrium paths.The feasibility and efficiency of this approach is finally demonstrated by three numerical examples:two dome-shaped space trusses and a kinematically indeterminate assembly composed of bars.

Abstract:The radical and longitudinal clearances in the revolute joint of space deployable mechanism were considered.The analytical definition of the least distance between pin and journal in the radical and longitudinal direction of the pin was obtained based on the geometrical configuration of three-dimensional revolute clearance joints.The discriminant equation was established to decide and between pin and journal in the three-dimensional clearance joints.The normal force between journal and pin was modeled by a nonlinear elastic-damper model and the tangent friction was modeled by the Coulomb's frictional model.Then the movement process was divided into contact and separation to found the dynamic equation of the multi-body system.The numerical analysis of the deployable truss show that the occurs not only in the truss plane,but also out of the truss plane.The instantaneous force is one to ten-odd times of the force in the idea revolute joint.

Abstract:In order to ensure structural reliability of deployable structures in orbit, the hybrid analysis of its mechanism motion and flexible deformation is required. The basal equations for deployment analysis of deployable truss structures were thusly formulated. By using the generalized inverse theory, a new method was developed to the hybrid analysis of deployable truss structures with mechanism motion and flexible deformation. The coupling between these two motions was calculated, so the analytical process could obtain a high accuracy. Compared with conventional dynamics of flexible multibody system, the advantage of this new method lies in its ability to analyze the complex movement of large deployable truss structure effectively with a comparatively simple modeling process. The efficiency of the new method was verified by simulation program based on it.

Abstract:The moving process of the double-ring deployable space truss was analyzed with the Moore-Penrose generalized inverse matrix method,and each state of the double-ring deployable space truss in the deploying process was obtained by numerical simulation.Comparative analysis shows that,for large caliber antennas,the stiffness of the double-ring deployable truss is obviously stronger than that of the common single-ring deployable truss with the same caliber.With the geometrical models of the deployable truss prototype,which were output by the above-mentioned simulation program,finete element models of 50 m deployable truss were established,and also the dynamic vibration during the deploying process of the double-ring deployable truss was analyzed.Vibration test was carried out on the 2 m test modal of the double-ring deployable truss by suspension,in order to eliminate the influence of the gravity's effect.In addition,the result of the test was contrasted with that of the finite element analysis of the double-ring deployable truss,finding out that two of them were approximately the same,to make verification to finite element dynamic analysis.
Modified Solution Strategy Of Framed Structures For Geometrically Nonlinear Analysis

Abstract:three phases are essential to the incremental-iterative analysis of elastically nonlinear structures, which generally followed in sequence: predictor, corrector and error-checking phases. The predictor phase included an assemblage of structural stiffness and the calculation of the incremental displacements, the corrector phase is to calculate the nodal forces, and the error-checking phase is to calculate the unbalanced forces and to update the configuration. In this paper, a modified solution strategy is presented for an elastically framed structure undergoing large displacements and large rotations. In predictor phase, by virtue of the rotational matrix for a rotational vector, three orthogonal vectors which rigidly attached a cross section were determined; using the central displacements and the vectors of cross-sectional principal axes, the displacements and strains for any point on a cross section were accurately determined. Applying the principle of virtual work, interpolating by the cubic Hermite spline, the tangent stiffness matrix was obtained. In the corrector phase, a corotational formulation is used for the recovery of the nodal forces with natural displacements, and it is derived in a corotational configuration which is rigidly moved by the last calculated the configuration in equilibrium. In each incremental load, the geometrical update of the elements are implemented before the incremental displacements are resolved, then the local element-end displacements corresponding to the corotational configuration were obtained; utilizing the stiffness matrix in a corotational configuration is employed to calculate the incremental element-end forces. Several classical numerical examples verified the accuracy and the efficiency of the present solution strategy.
Buckling analysis of structures based on geometrically nonlinear force method by solving kinematic path (GNFM-KP)

Abstract:The structural buckling was actually a mechanism motion process. In the analysis of structural buckling, the effect of geometry topology on the stability of structural system should be paid enough attentions, and mechanism displacement should also be taken into account. In this study, the essence of force-displacement curve in the equilibrium path was first clarified. With the mechanism displacement mode considered comprehensively and structures and mechanisms unified, a new method named as "Geometrically Nonlinear Force Method by Solving Kinematic Path" (GNFM-KP) was then proposed to trace the whole buckling process of structures by introducing continuous disturbance. The variation tendency of elastic stiffness, geometry stiffness and tangent stiffness of structures and their mutual relationships in the buckling process were also investigated. The validity and accuracy of the present method to trace the whole buckling paths of structures were illustrated eventually by analyzing a 24-bar star-shape space truss.

Abstract:International Journal of Applied Mechanics, Ahead of Print. This work proposes an improved weak-form quadrature element (IWQE) method for analyzing non-homogeneous space truss structures. The present method combines the high accuracy of the traditional WQE method with the universality of the standard finite element (FE) method. In the analysis, the structure is divided into a series of non-homogeneous elements with large sizes, and discrete function values are used to describe unknown mechanical properties in an element. Chebyshev–Lobatto differential quadrature and Gauss–Lobatto integral quadrature are used to deal with the energy variation of the element. Therefore, the endpoints of the element are included in the quadrature points, resulting in symmetric and positive definite stiffness matrix and diagonal mass matrix that represent internal point displacements by its endpoints in advance, significantly reducing order. All the elements can be easily and conveniently implemented as in FE. Both displacement and force boundary conditions are considered, leading to easier element assembly and smaller global matrices than traditional WQE while maintaining higher accuracy than FE. A non-homogeneous space truss composed of 40 bars is taken as an example to demonstrate the merits of the proposed method in accuracy, efficiency and robustness. The order of the global matrix equation is only 51 in present method.

Abstract:The paper presents the results of computational study of sections of spatial truss structures. They can form large supporting structures on spacecraft to place onboard equipment. The calculations were carried out by the finite element method in FEMAP with Nastran. The chosen section, the object of study, is a set of straight rods rigidly connected at the nodes in such a way that the cross section of the truss structure is a triangle. Calculation models, procedures for calculation and results analysis are presented. The purpose of the calculation is to determine how the relative position of the rods in the structural scheme affects the mechanical properties of the structure. The main criterion for strength estimating was the magnitude of the stresses derived by load. Stiffness was determined by the value of the first natural frequency. The sequential addition of rods and varying their connection allow modifying the structural schemes of truss structures. Next, the mechanical properties of the structure which effected by made modifications were evaluated again. Thus, six structural schemes of sections of the truss structure, obtained from the results of the study, have been developed. At the same time, the mass of the section, its shape and dimensions, the material and shape of the rods section as well as the initial and boundary conditions, remained unchanged. Based on the results of the analysis, someone can notice that each structure has unique mechanical characteristics. Thus, the paper gives recommendations for choosing a specific structural scheme of the section, depending on the required operating conditions and acceptable manufacturing technology. So, the criteria for choosing one of the above various sections of a truss structure or the principle of its building can be the complexity of manufacturing, maximum stiffness and strength, or minimum displacement. Structural schemes of sections with the highest strength and capability have been selected for use as part of spatial truss rods of spacecraft.
