Abstract:Polyether-grafted polysiloxanes was synthesized under microwave irradiation from methyl hydrogen silicone polyoxyethylene polyoxypropylene acetate.The optimum reaction conditions were ascertained as follows:radiation power of 600 W,the molar ratio of polyether to silicone of 1.2∶1,amount of chloroplatinic acid catalyst 10 mg/kg(calculate by Pt) and 40 min microwave irradiation.Under the optimum conditions,the average conversion ratio was 94.7%.The structure of the sample was analyzed and characterized by method of FTIR and 1HNMR.Polyether-grafted polysiloxanes was used to produce antifoaming agent and applied in metal cleanser.The results show that the antifoaming agent demonstrates superior antifoaming performance and washing effect with better stability.

Abstract:High efficient antifoaming agent was prepared from dimethyl silicone with emulsifier,carrier and polyether L61.The selection of main antifoaming material,carrier,emulsion-dispersing agent and their compounding ratio was reviewed.The results show the best stability and defoaming properties of organosilicon defoamer is achieved when dimethyl silicon mass fraction 15%,ω(500 mPa·s) ∶ω(1 000 mPa·s) equal to 1 ∶1.3,Span60(0.82%)/Tween60(0.68%)blend emulsifier,aluminum silicate mass fraction 1% and polyether L61 mass fraction 1%.

Abstract:Polyethermethylsiloxanes (PEMSs) are silicone based polymers formed by attaching one or more ethylene oxide (EO)/propylene oxide (PO) chains to a siloxane chain. As the siloxane chain is lengthened, the polarity of the PEMSs are reduced. Little research has been conducted on the use of ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC)-mass spectrometry (MS) to analyze PEMS oligomers with more than 4 siloxane groups because of their low polarity and poor solubility in water and acetonitrile (ACN). In this study, we developed a high chromatographic resolution method for PEMS and polyether oligomers using the water-ACN-isopropanol (IPA) tertiary solvents gradient. PEMSs oligomers containing one EO pendant chain and 3-13 silicone groups were analyzed. More than 102 PEMS oligomers and 21 polyether oligomers were separated within 45 min and identified by accurate molecular masses. During this gradient elution process, different chromatographic modes were used: both precipitation-redissolution and adsorption mode for PEMSs, adsorption mode for EO chains in poly-ethers, and exclusion mode for EO chains in PEMSs. This efficient separation method for PEMSs would broaden the characterization of silicone surfactants. Also, it is beneficial to establish the relationship between surfactant structure, synthetic route and performance optimization. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A eugenol-based silicone-containing monomer 4,4 '-(1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane-1,3-dipropyl)bis-2-methoxyphenol(EUSi) was synthesized from eugenol and 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane via the hydrosilylation reaction. And waterborne polyurethane (WPU) with excellent properties was obtained by using EUSi as a type of diol chain extender. The unique combination of rigidity and flexibility in the chemical structure of EUSi greatly facilitated the mechanical properties, thermal properties, and water resistance of WPU. With only a 3% dosage of EUSi, the maximum tensile strength was increased from 6.2 to 22.4 MPa, while the water absorption was decreased from 31.3% to a surprisingly 7.6%. Our work provides a new convenient strategy for the preparation of organosilicon-modified WPU with improved performance.

Abstract:In this paper, polysiloxanes with pendant quaternary ammonium and polyether segments (EQAPS, nonionic–cationic silicone surfactant) were synthesized through hydrosilylation of poly(dimethylhydro)siloxane with allyl poly(ethylene glycol) acetic ester (M n = 540) and allyl glycidyl ether, followed by a ring-opening reaction of epoxide groups with diethyl amine and quaternization with benzyl chloride. The chemical structures of EQAPS and intermediate products were characterized by 1H-NMR and FT-IR spectra. The surface activity and thermal properties of EQAPS were studied with surface tension measurement and differential scanning calorimetry analysis, respectively. The results showed that the EQAPS had a much smaller critical micelle concentration value (118 mg/L) and lower glass-transition temperature (T g: −57 °C). The silyl-terminated polypropylene oxide waterborne emulsions, which were substantially free from organic solvent, were prepared via a phase-inversion emulsification technique using EQAPS as single emulsifier and/or poly(ethylene glycol) (\(\bar{M}\) n = 400) as cosolvent. The electrical properties of the system indicated that the phase inversion was completely accomplished. The viscosity of the emulsions with different solid contents was measured, and the results showed that the most suitable solid content was about 50 wt%. The emulsions with smaller particle size (12 μm) had better storage stability (48 days at 50 °C) and freeze–thaw stability.

Abstract:Functionalization of polyolefins has been a challenging but promising issue since their invention, with the promise of retaining inherent properties and overcoming the low reactivity and poor compatibility. Organosilicons are widely used for polymer modification to improve thermal stability, hydrophobicity, compatibility, and permeability. Since the advent of alkoxysilane-grafted polyethylene in 1960s, organosilicon-functionalized polyolefins (Si-PO) have been extensively prepared, investigated, and developed. The structure of Si-PO is designable due to the flexible chemistry of organosilicons; crosslinked, long chain branched, and star-shaped polyolefins are available after the introduction of alkoxysilanes, chlorosilanes, hyrdosilanes, or alkylsilanes into polyolefins, and generally these polymers are more compatible to fillers than commercial polyolefins due to stronger interaction. In addition, functionalization of polyolefins with stable organosilicon components such as polysiloxane and polysilsesquioxane can improve thermostability, hydrophobicity, gas permeability, and aging resistance; such polyolefins are usually grafted or block polymers. In this review, Si-PO is classified according to the functional organosilicon component, namely alkoxysilane, chlorosilane, hydrosilane, alkylsilane, polysiloxane, and polysilsesquioxane; their preparations are discussed minutely and summarized with manifold examples. Silicon-containing structures impart the unique properties of organosilicons to polyolefins; applications of Si-PO as compatibilizers, processing aids, battery separators, and separating membranes have been widely reported and are discussed here.

Abstract:The copolymer emulsion of polyurethane-acrylate-vinyltriethoxysilane(KH570) was prepared with sodium laurylsulfate and OP-10 as emulsifiers by pre-emulsion process.The structure of copolymer and latex particle morphology were characterized by IR and TEM.The influence of amount of KH-570,temperature and pH value on copolymerization rate was discussed.The results showed that the copolymer contains siloxane groups and the latex particles ranged from 50～100 nm.The conversion rate decrease with increase of the quantity of KH-570 and decrease of the temperature.Incorporation of KH-570 can improve the water resistance of the coatings film significantly.

Abstract:In this work, silicone softener (PTSO-PEG) was synthesized, with piperazine terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PTSO) and epoxy terminated polyethylene glycol (EPEG) as raw materials. Chemical structure of PTSO-PEG was characterized by (1)H NMR, FTIR, GPC, and TGA. Its application on cotton fabrics was studied. Morphologies of silicone modified surfaces on cotton fabrics and silicon wafers were investigated by SEM and AFM, respectively. The morphology images indicated that PTSO-PEG treated surface was macroscopically smooth and microscopically rough. Performance properties of silicone treated cotton fabrics, including hydrophilicity, whiteness, and softness, were tested. The results showed that PTSO-PEG treated cotton fabrics expressed better whiteness and hydrophilicity than traditional amino silicone treated sample. The piperazine and hydrophilic polyether groups on PTSO-PEG molecules disturbed the continuous and orderly arrangement of Si-CH3 groups, giving the cotton a hydrophilic and rough surface. This work provided a cost-effective and environmental method to synthesize and apply high performance silicone softener.

Abstract:Emulsion of nanosized silicon oxide-polymerized acrylic ester with high solid content was prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization, using silica sol as source of nanosized silicon oxide. The effects of the silica sol on the particle size, distribution of particle size, glass transition temperature, mechanical and applicable properties of emulsions were investigated. The results show that the particle size was reduced by joining the silicon sol, the latex particles were distributed evenly and the mechanical properties of the water-based coating had been also improved. The results of use test also show that the water-based coating is suitable for coatings of the walls and wood.

Abstract:The progress of study on synthesizing SiO2/polymer nanocomposite emulsion was reviewed.The major topic concerns some kinds of SiO2 materials and the synthetic mechanisms and methods of SiO2/Polymer nanocomposite emulsion.SiO2/polymer nanocomposite emulsion can be prepared through electrostatic interactions,adsorption intermedium,grafting and coupling mechanism.Blending,sol-gel,emulsion polymerization and dispersion polymerization are the common ways to prepare this nanocomposite emulsion.Futher more,the study emphases,developable directions and applications of the SiO2/polymer nanocomposite emulsion in the fields of paints,adhesive and plastic modifying were summarized.

Abstract:A novel series of biobased branched nonionic surfactants (ethoxylated dihydroxy stearic acid methyl ester, DMOEn) was synthesized and characterized. DMOEn was based on a hydroxyoctadecanoic acid methyl ester, which was obtained from renewable oleic acid in waste cooking oil. These new polyoxyethylene surfactants contained double hydrophilic and hydrophobic chains, which shows the surface properties of the branched surfactant. The synthesis rules and reaction kinetic were studied in detail. The physicochemical properties and surface properties of the DMOEn with different degrees of ethoxylation at various concentrations were investigated. The surface tension results indicate that DMOEn reduced the surface tension reduction and increased the diffusion rate in aqueous solution. The dynamic contact angle, foaming ability and emulsifying capacity tests showed that the DMOEn exhibited good wetting performance, low foaming, rapid defoaming and an excellent emulsifying ability, which shows that the surfactant has potential application in industrial cleaning.
Novel O/W Emulsions by Utilizing a Vesicle/Disc Transformation of Polyether Modified Silicone

Abstract:Emulsification is an important technology in the field of cosmetics and household products. Emulsions are in non-equilibrium state; therefore, the products vary depending on the preparation process, and their state changes with time. Furthermore, it is known empirically that different types of oils have different emulsification properties (preparation and stability). For these reasons, the variables in emulsification research are numerous and complicated to analyze. As a result, many industrial applications have had to rely on empirical rules. In this study, emulsions with a lamellar liquid crystalline phase as an adsorption layer at the emulsion interface were investigated. The characteristics of O/W emulsions formed with the excess solvent phases (aqueous and oil phases) separated from the lamellar liquid crystalline phase were investigated based on the phase equilibrium of the ternary system.As a result, it was found that by agitating the aqueous phase containing dispersed vesicles of emulsifier (polyether modified silicone) together with the oil phase, an emulsion with a uniform interfacial membrane of lamellar liquid crystalline phase could be obtained. The emulsions prepared by this method were found to have good stability against coalescence. The process of transformation from vesicles to the uniform liquid crystal interfacial membrane during the emulsification process was clarified by a freeze-fracture transmission electron micrograph and the calculation of interfacial membrane thickness based on precise particle size analysis. Furthermore, the emulsification properties of polyether-modified silicones were clarified using polar oils and silicone oils, which are a combination of high/low and low/high compatibility with hydrophilic (polyethylene glycol) and lipophilic (polydimethylsiloxane) groups of polyether modified silicone, respectively. It is expected that this research will lead to the evolution of various functionalities in products in the fields of cosmetics, household products, food, pharmaceuticals, paint and others.

Abstract:The novel cationic polyacrylate latex containing fluorine silicon was successfully prepared via soap-free emulsion polymerization of butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyltriethoxysilane and hexafluorobutylmethacrylate in water phase, which were initiated with water soluble azo initiator and emulsified with the mixed surfactants polymerizable emulsifier and OP-10. The films of the resultant latex were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and contact angle (CA) determinator, respectively. In comparison with the conventional polyacrylate latex, the thermal stability and water resistance of novel latex film are improved. The conditions of preparing the novel cationic acrylate latexes were optimized. The optimum conditions of preparing the novel latex are as follows: the amount of emulsifiers and the initiator are 6.0% and0.3%, respectively; both the amount of VETS and amount of HFMA are 6.0%. In this case, the conversion is high and the polymerization stability is good.

Abstract:Silicone-in-water emulsions have found widespread use as lubricants, water repellants, softeners, binders, antiblocking agents, antislip agents, and defoamers across a diverse range of markets including textiles, coatings, pharmaceuticals, and home and personal care. Stable incorporation of silicone emulsions into formulated products for these applications can be a challenge. This study seeks to enable formulation by investigating the impact of the degree of ethoxylation of sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) surfactants on their ability to displace surfactant stabilizer at the silicone-water interfaces of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-in-water emulsion droplets. Building this understanding will greatly enable the manufacture of home and personal care products prepared by introducing silicone emulsions into SLES-rich formulations. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements reveal that SLES can displace the triethanolamine dodecylbenzenesulfonate stabilizer at the droplet surfaces. Both capillary electrophoresis (CE) measurements and molecular dynamics simulations of the interfacial tension (IFT) between silicone and water measurements suggest that SLES mixtures with a higher average degree of ethoxylation are more surface active at the silicone─water interface. The molecular dynamics simulations predict a systematic decrease in PDMS-water IFT with increase in degree of ethoxylation (simulations predict a decrease of 1.3 mN/m per mole of ethylene oxide). Optical microscopy reveals that the presence of SLES at the droplet surfaces promotes the formation of loose flocs of droplets that break up upon dilution. Overall, these fundamental insights will aid in formulating silicone emulsions into products to achieve optimal performance.

Abstract:Functionalized PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles bearing sulfonic groups on the surface were successfully synthesized via emulsion copolymerization using a polymerizable emulsifier a olefin solfonate (AOS). As demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, well-defined core-shell PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles with a diameter of 50 nm were obtained. Sulfonic groups introduced onto the surface of the composite nanoparticles were quantified by FTIR, and can be controlled to some extent via a two-stage procedure.

Abstract:Polysiloxane nanolatices were prepared by the microemulsion polymerization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D-4) with nonionic polyoxyethylene alkyl ether and polyoxyethylene aryl ether as surfactants, ethylene glycol or aminoethanol as a cosurfactant, and potassium hydroxide or dipotassium dimethylsilanolate (I) as an initiator. The effect of the different initiators and the amount of cosurfactant on the microemulsion polymerization rate of D-4 was investigated. The initiator, potassium hydroxide, had a similar catalytic activity to I, and adding the cosurfactant changed a common siloxane emulsion to a microemulsion. At a same reaction conditions, the polymerization rate of D-4 with aminoethanol as a cosurfactant was much faster than that of ethylene glycol. The kinetics of this siloxane micro-emulsion polymerization was consistent with Morgen-Kaler theory. The transparency value of the resultant polysiloxane nanolatex was more than 95% when the amount of ethylene glycol was more than 25% and the siloxane amount was about 30 wt % of the ceaction mixture. A nanolatex of polydimethylsiloxane-co-polyvinylmethylsiloxane, which was crosslinked with potassium persulfate, revealed that the mean diameter of the droplets was 32 nm with a narrow distribution. Abstract:Abstract Surfactants are widely used in the leather-making processes. The structure and property of surfactant obviously affect the quality and performance of leather. In this paper, a novel anionic surfactant, organosilicone modified sodium sulfonate of alkanolamide succinic acid monoester with palm oil was synthesized. Firstly palm oil was amidated with diethanolamine, then grafted with hydroxy-terminated silicone oil, esterified with maleic anhydride and sulphited with sodium bisulfite in sequence. The emulsification properties and fatliquoring performance of the prepared surfactant were tested. The influence of the mass percentage of reactants, the reaction temperature and time on the surface tension, the emulsifying activity and stability of the prepared surfactant were investigated. The FT-IR spectra analysis showed that under optimised conditions the novel surfactant was obtained. The fatliquoring application experiments showed that the novel surfactant is an excellent leather fatliquor.
