Abstract:The nonparametric estimator of the conditional survival function proposed by Beran is a useful tool to evaluate the effects of covariates in the presence of random right censoring. However, censoring indicators of right censored data may be missing for different reasons in many applications. We propose some estimators of the conditional cumulative hazard and survival functions which allow to handle this situation. We also construct the likelihood ratio confidence bands for them and obtain their asymptotic properties. Simulation studies are used to evaluate the performances of the estimators and their confidence bands.

Abstract:Independent censoring is usually assumed in survival data analysis. However, dependent censoring, where the survival time is dependent on the censoring time, is often seen in real data applications. In this project, we model the vector of survival time and censoring time marginally through semiparametric heteroscedastic accelerated failure time models and model their association by the vector of errors in the model. We show that this semiparametric model is identified, and the generalized estimating equation approach is extended to estimate the parameters in this model. It is shown that the estimators of the model parameters are consistent and asymptotically normal. Simulation studies are conducted to compare it with the estimation method under a parametric model. A real dataset from a prostate cancer study is used for illustration of the new proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) of the survival function based on a semi-Markov model under dependent censoring. We show that the NPMLE is asymptotically normal and achieves asymptotic nonparametric efficiency. We also provide a uniformly consistent estimator of the corresponding asymptotic covariance function based on an information operator. The finite-sample performance of the proposed NPMLE is examined with simulation studies, which show that the NPMLE has smaller mean squared error than the existing estimators and its corresponding pointwise confidence intervals have reasonable coverages. A real example is also presented.
Copula-based Semiparametric Nonnormal Transformed Linear Model for Survival Data with Dependent Censoring

Abstract:Although the independent censoring assumption is commonly used in survival analysis, it can be violated when the censoring time is related to the survival time, which often happens in many practical applications. To address this issue, we propose a flexible semiparametric method for dependent censored data. Our approach involves fitting the survival time and the censoring time with a joint transformed linear model, where the transformed function is unspecified. This allows for a very general class of models that can account for possible covariate effects, while also accommodating administrative censoring. We assume that the transformed variables have a bivariate nonnormal distribution based on parametric copulas and parametric marginals, which further enhances the flexibility of our method. We demonstrate the identifiability of the proposed model and establish the consistency and asymptotic normality of the model parameters under appropriate regularity conditions and assumptions. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of our method through extensive simulation studies, and provide a real data example for illustration.

Abstract:We study estimation and model selection of semiparametric models of multivariate survival functions for censored data, which are characterized by possibly misspecified parametric copulas and nonparametric marginal survivals. We obtain the consistency and root-n asymptotic normality of a two-step copula estimator to the pseudo-true copula parameter value according to KLIC, and provide a simple consistent estimator of its asymptotic variance, allowing for a first-step nonparametric estimation of the marginal survivals. We establish the asymptotic distribution of the penalized pseudo-likelihood ratio statistic for comparing multiple semiparametric multivariate survival functions subject to copula misspecification and general censorship. An empirical application is provided.

Abstract:We propose some new diagnostic tests for duration models -popularly used in economics, finance and other fields -using a computationally simple empirical survival function that utilizes information from censored observations. The impact of parameter estimation uncertainty is properly addressed, ensuring that the proposed tests have an asymptotically valid Type I error. A simple resampling method is used to obtain critical values for the proposed tests, and extensions to unobserved heterogeneity and competing risk are also considered. A simulation study shows that the proposed tests have reasonable sizes and good powers in finite samples.

Abstract:In the presence of univariate censoring, the bivariate survival function of paired failure times can be expressed as the ratio of the bivariate at-risk probability to the survival function of the censoring time. The use of this natural representation yields a very simple nonparametric estimator for the bivariate survival curve. The estimator is strongly consistent and, upon proper normalization, converges weakly to a zero-mean Gaussian process with an easily estimated covariance function. Numerical studies demonstrate that both the survival curve estimator and its covariance function estimator perform markedly well for practical sample sizes. Applications to the correlation problem and to the interval estimation of the difference in median survival times are also studied.

Abstract:Kernel estimators of density function and hazard rate function are very important in nonparametric statistics. The paper aims to investigate the uniformly strong representations and the rates of uniformly strong consistency for kernel smoothing density and hazard rate function estimation with censored widely orthant dependent data based on the Kaplan–Meier estimator. Under some mild conditions, the rates of the remainder term and strong consistency are shown to be and , respectively, where g ( n ) are the dominating coefficients of widely orthant dependent random variables. Some numerical simulations and a real data analysis are also presented to confirm the theoretical results based on finite sample performances.

Abstract:Stochastic curtailment is a valuable tool in monitoring long-term medical studies. Under this approach, one calculates the conditional power, which is the probability of rejecting the null hypothesis at the scheduled end of the study given the existing data at the interim analysis, along with certain speculation about the future data. The conditional power may be used to aid the decision to terminate a study prematurely or to extend a study beyond its originally planned duration. This article provides a formal and systematic investigation into the use of stochastic curtailment in the context of censored survival data. To enhance generality, we introduce a broad class of statistics that includes two-sample weighted log-rank statistics, as well as the partial likelihood score statistic for testing treatment difference with covariate adjustment under the proportional hazards model. We establish the weak convergence under both the null hypothesis and contiguous alternatives for this class of statistics when calculated repeatedly over the calendar time (i.e., time of interim analysis). Further, we derive the conditional distributions of these statistics calculated at the end of the study given all the data collected up to the interim look or given the statistics calculated at the interim look, and provide analytic expressions for the corresponding conditional powers. These results enable us to address several subtle issues involved in the definition and implementation of conditional power for censored survival data, especially when there is staggered patient entry with a potential time trend in the survival distribution, when the Gehan-type weight function is used, or when treatment is not independent of covariates. For randomized clinical trials, we show that very simple formulas can be used to calculate the conditional powers of the unweighted log-rank test (with or without covariate adjustment) under both the null and alternative hypotheses. Simulation studies demonstrate that the conditional powers for survival studies can be accurately evaluated through the proposed formulas even when the sample size is small. An illustration with data taken from a colon cancer study is provided.

Abstract:This paper discusses regression analysis of case K interval-censored failure time data, a general type of failure time data, in the presence of informative censoring with the focus on simultaneous variable selection and estimation. Although many authors have considered the challenging variable selection problem for interval-censored data, most of the existing methods assume independent or non-informative censoring. More importantly, the existing methods that allow for informative censoring are frailty model-based approaches and cannot directly assess the degree of informative censoring among other shortcomings. To address these, we propose a conditional approach and develop a penalized sieve maximum likelihood procedure for the simultaneous variable selection and estimation of covariate effects. Furthermore, we establish the oracle property of the proposed method and illustrate the appropriateness and usefulness of the approach using a simulation study. Finally we apply the proposed method to a set of real data on Alzheimer's disease and provide some new insights.

The Analysis of Alternative Interval-Censored and Complete Data

Abstract:The paper considers an imputation algorithm of iterative single point quantiles for the analysis of the alternative interval-censored and complete data which is a new type of censoring data. The imputed virtual interval-censored data and right censored data are all given by a modified quantile imputation algorithm for general distributions, which is proposed in the paper for this new type censoring data. The simulation results indicate that the proposed modified quantile imputation algorithm seems to be applicable and stable for the estimation of parameters with all distributions. The case of Weibull distribution that has not a closed form for parameter estimations has been studied in details by using the proposed algorithm. Specially, for exponential distribution, we proved that the convergence of the algorithm holds under general conditions, which is an extension of the previous work. The work done in the paper can be used to solve the problems of parameter estimation even in those cases when it is impossible to obtain a complete sample under some cotriplex circumstances. This may bring a new way to balance higher estimation precision and cost on data collections in practice.

Abstract:A minor modification of the product-limit estimator is proposed for estimating a distribution function (not necessarily continuous) when the data are subject to either truncation or censoring, or to both, by independent but not necessarily identically distributed truncation-censoring variables. Making use of martingale integral representations and empirical process theory, uniform strong consistency of the estimator is established and weak convergence results are proved for the entire observable range of the function. Numerical results are also given to illustrate the usefulness of the modification, particularly in the context of truncated data.
Conformal predictive intervals in survival analysis: a re-sampling approach

Abstract:The distribution-free method of conformal prediction (Vovk et al, 2005) has gained considerable attention in computer science, machine learning, and statistics. Candes et al. (2023) extended this method to right-censored survival data, addressing right-censoring complexity by creating a covariate shift setting, extracting a subcohort of subjects with censoring times exceeding a fixed threshold. Their approach only estimates the lower prediction bound for type I censoring, where all subjects have available censoring times regardless of their failure status. In medical applications, we often encounter more general right-censored data, observing only the minimum of failure time and censoring time. Subjects with observed failure times have unavailable censoring times. To address this, we propose a bootstrap method to construct one -- as well as two-sided conformal predictive intervals for general right-censored survival data under different working regression models. Through simulations, our method demonstrates excellent average coverage for the lower bound and good coverage for the two-sided predictive interval, regardless of working model is correctly specified or not, particularly under moderate censoring. We further extend the proposed method to several directions in medical applications. We apply this method to predict breast cancer patients' future survival times based on tumour characteristics and treatment.

Abstract:When the time to death, X, and the time to censoring, Y, are associated some additional information is need to identify the marginal survival functions. A natural function which provides this additional information is the copula of X and Y. Assuming that the copula is known, we use the notion of self consistency to construct an estimator of the marginal survival functions based on dependent competing risk data. Results of a small simulation study are shown to compare this estimator to other estimators of the marginal survival function based on an assumed copula.

Abstract:It has been difficult to generalise Kaplan–Meier approaches to censored regression data under the minimal condition that censoring and response are conditionally independent given the explanatory variables. Portnoy [S. Portnoy, Censored regression quantiles, J. Am. Stat. Assoc. 98 (2003), pp. 1001–1012.] provided such a generalisation based on the paradigm of censored quantile regression. However, previous research has only provided consistency results for this approach. The results here provide an asymptotic distribution theory under relatively mild conditions for a gridded version of the algorithm in Portnoy [S. Portnoy, Censored regression quantiles, J. Am. Stat. Assoc. 98 (2003), pp. 1001–1012.], and show that the asymptotics for censored regression quantiles are an exact generalisation of those for the Kaplan–Meier estimator in one sample.

Abstract:Consider a situation where one is interested in estimating the density of a survival time that is subject to random right censoring and measurement errors. This happens often in practice, like in public health (pregnancy length), medicine (duration of infection), ecology (duration of forest fire), among others. We assume a classical additive measurement error model with Gaussian noise and unknown error variance and a random right censoring scheme. Under this setup, we develop minimal conditions under which the assumed model is identifiable when no auxiliary variables or validation data are available, and we offer a flexible estimation strategy using Laguerre polynomials for the estimation of the error variance and the density of the survival time. The asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators is established, and the numerical performance of the methodology is investigated on both simulated and real data on gestational age.

Abstract:Nonparametric comparison of survival functions is one of the most commonly required task in failure time studies such as clinical trials, and for this, many procedures have been developed under various situations. This paper considers a situation that often occurs in practice but has not been discussed much: the comparison based on interval-censored data in the presence of unequal censoring. That is, one observes only interval-censored data, and the distributions of or the mechanisms behind censoring variables may depend on treatments and thus be different for the subjects in different treatment groups. For the problem, a test procedure is developed that takes into account the difference between the distributions of the censoring variables, and the asymptotic normality of the test statistics is given. For the assessment of the performance of the procedure, a simulation study is conducted and suggests that it works well for practical situations. An illustrative example is provided. Abstract:This paper discusses regression analysis of right-censored failure time data when censoring indicators are missing for some subjects. Several methods have been developed for the analysis under different situations and especially, Goetghebeur and Ryan[4] considered the situation where both the failure time and the censoring time follow the proportional hazards models marginally and developed an estimating equation approach. One limitation of their approach is that the two baseline hazard functions were assumed to be proportional to each other. We consider the same problem and present an efficient estimation procedure for regression parameters that does not require the proportionality assumption. An EM algorithm is developed and the method is evaluated by a simulation study, which indicates that the proposed methodology performs well for practical situations. An illustrative example is provided.

Abstract:Consider the uniform consistency of the product-limit estimator of survival function with censored data and staggered entry. We show that the product-limit estimator is uniformly consistent over life time horizon at fixed calendar time points or over any region of large calendar times. Abstract:An important goal of censored quantile regression is to provide reliable predictions of survival quantiles, which are often reported in practice to offer robust and comprehensive biomedical summaries. However, formal methods for evaluating and comparing working quantile regression models in terms of their performance in predicting survival quantiles have been lacking, especially when the working models are subject to model mis-specification. In this article, we proposes a sensible and rigorous framework to fill in this gap. We introduce and justify a predictive performance measure defined based on the check loss function. We derive estimators of the proposed predictive performance measure and study their distributional properties and the corresponding inference procedures. More importantly, we develop model comparison procedures that enable thorough evaluations of model predictive performance among nested or non-nested models. Our proposals properly accommodate random censoring to the survival outcome and the realistic complication of model mis-specification, and thus are generally applicable. Extensive simulations and a real data example demonstrate satisfactory performances of the proposed methods in real life settings.
