Abstract:PAP has widely used in Europe, the U.S, and Japan. As an effective technology for urban stormwater management, PAP not only decreases stormwater volumes but also improves runoff water quality including heavy metals, suspended solids (SS) and nutrients. In addition, it help protects groundwater and urban environment. In this paper the current trends of investigating the purification ability of PAP are introduced. The characteristics, the pavement structures and materials are analyzed. The recent researches in field studies and laboratory experiments are highlighted. The present applications of and challenges to PAP are discussed. Further research needs are recommended.

Abstract:In order to investigate the emission characteristics of rainwater runoff pollution from highway with asphalt pavement, simultaneous monitoring method of rainfall-runoff-pollutants was adopted. During 2006 to 2009, rainfall runoff samples from six asphalt pavement highways in 3 typical areas were collected and monitored, including Pearl River Delta Region in South China, Chongqing Province in South-west and Qingdao in East China. Results showed that average concentrations of SS, COD, TN and TP in runoff samples exceeded the Class V standard of surface water defined in Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Water (GB3838-2002). SS was the main pollutant of the highway asphalt pavement runoff, and was an important carrier of other major pollutants (such as heavy metals and chemical oxygen demand, COD) as well. The dust particle size of expressway road surface was generally small (more than 90 % less than 2mm). There was a big difference in concentrations of the same pollutant in particles with various sizes. Pollutant concentrations were increased with the reduction of particle size. Pavement runoff was less biodegradable and the ratio of BOD5/COD was 0.0188. Therefore, the ecological ditch combining percolation and drainage was proposed to purify the highway asphalt pavement runoff.

Abstract:Permeable pavements (PPs) are widely used for stormwater control in urbanized areas as they provide absorption and retention of surface runoff. Previous studies on PP systems mainly focus on non-vehicular access areas with light traffic loads where the base usually connects to native soils which allow exfiltration from the bottom. The runoff reduction performance of the PPs in vehicular access areas (PPs-VAA) featured by more complex structure with underdrain outflow control still needs in-depth investigation. In this study, an analytical probabilistic model was developed to quantify the runoff control performance of PPs-VAA taking into account the effects of climate conditions, layer configurations and varying underdrain outflows. The calibration and verification of the proposed analytical permeable pavement model for vehicular access areas (APPM-VAA) were performed by comparing the analytical results with SWMM simulation results. The model was tested in case studies in Guangzhou and Jinan, China, with humid and semi-humid climate conditions, respectively. Close agreement between the results obtained from the proposed analytical model and those from continuous simulation outputs was observed. The proposed analytical model is proved to be capable of rapidly assessing the runoff control performance of PPs-VAA; it can thus be used in the hydrologic design and analysis of permeable pavement systems in engineering practices.

Abstract:Asphalt permeable pavement (APP) is a passive structural low impact development material and component of green infrastructure for rainfall-runoff control. Multifunctional engineered APP can fulfill requirements as a load-transmitting surface while serving as a more environmentally conscious infrastructure material that functions to restore the in situ hydrology, reduce runoff, filter, and treat infiltrating runoff, reduce thermal pollution and temperature, also provide the load-carrying capacity of conventional pavement. Based on the determination of main value indices for runoff pollutants, the efficiency of controlling runoff pollutants has been studied from materials and structures of permeable pavement in this paper, then put forward to the keys of material and structure design for permeable pavement, which will provide techniques for designing ecotypic permeable pavement. All the results indicate high particle separation and the removal rate of chemistry oxygen demand can be achieved with APP. The effectiveness of APP for particle and COD removal also requires that these particle deposits are managed on a periodic basis through practices such as pavement cleaning.

Abstract:The utility model provides a road structure for storm water recovery and recycling, containing road bed and pavement, wherein the road pavement is permeable pavement and a leakage isolating layer is provided between the road pavement and road bed; the road bed is located above the earth of the ground with the leakage layer provided on top and made from water-proof material, and on top of the leakage layer, a permeable pavement is provided; a deep ditch is available on the two sides of the above three structural layers along the extension of the road, the leakage isolating layer is provided over the ground soil in the deep ditch and at the section of the road bed and joins the leakage isolating layer between the above road bed and the permeable pavement; a longitudinal drain pipe is arranged at the ditch bottom along the extension of the road, and small holes are distributed in the drain pipe; a transverse drain pipe connected with the longitudinal drain pipe is provided at certain intervals along the extension of the longitudinal drain pipe, and protrudes out of the ditch; and filter fabric is filled around the longitudinal drain pipe, permeable packing with concave surface is placed above the filter fabric, and this concave is the collecting gutter of which the top is lower than the surface layer of the permeable pavement. The outlet of the drain pipe is connected with the device for filtration, purification, storage and recycling of the storm water. The road structure in this utility model effectively collects storm water, making it possible for control of the pollution from storm water to the soil and underground water and for the recycling of storm water.

Abstract:Permeable pavements, as additive structures that have a good capability for runoff and pollutant reduction, are extensively used for sustainable urban drainage techniques. However, the exact mechanisms of runoff retention and pollutant reduction of a permeable pavement system remain unclear and so, it has become an ongoing issue and motivation for hydrologists and design and structural engineers. In this research paper, a suite of four scale-based runoff plots representing permeable pavements were designed with different permeable surface types and gravel layer thickness treatments, and coupled with simulated rainfall experiments to analyze the impacts of structural factors of permeable pavements on runoff retentions and pollution reduction. The present results showed that the average time to runoff for permeable pavements under low-intensity rainfall scenarios was approximately 78.5 min, while this was shortened to only 51.5 min under high-intensity rainfall scenarios. In terms of the average runoff retention of permeable pavements tested under low- and high-intensity rainfall cases, the results recorded approximately 52.5% and 42.5%, respectively, but runoff retention performances were relatively greater for the case of smaller storms within the scale experiments. Importantly, there was no statistical significance for the time to runoff and runoff retention between the permeable bricks and porous concretes for the analyzed rainfall events. The thicker gravel layers significantly delayed runoff generation and increased runoff retention percentages. Runoff pollutant load reduction rates of total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) were varied between permeable bricks and porous concretes. Runoff pollutants load reduction rates of TSS, TN, and TP were highly enhanced while the gravel layer thickness increased from 10 to 20 cm. Higher TSS, TN, and TP pollutant load removals were found from the lower intensity rainfalls. These findings could promote understanding of the hydrologic properties of permeable pavements and help design engineers in optimizing their design of permeable pavements for better runoff retention and pollution removal.

Abstract:The problems regarding subgrade water drainage and control of underground water level are a big challenge to composite asphalt-concrete pavement adopted in our national highway tunnels.Based on the investigation for water prevention and drainage technique of national highway tunnel pavement structure and status quo of tunnel pavement diseases,and the research on water prevention and drainage of existing pavements as well as the analysis and study of achievements from research on water prevention and drainage inside the tunnel,this paper proposes water prevention and drainage theory of composite asphalt pavement structure system inside the tunnel,mainly consisting: 1) Principle drawn up for water prevention and drainage of tunnel pavement structure;2) Structural types and materials of water prevention and drainage system of tunnel pavement structure.In combination with the supporting project,the paper presents technical instruction program for water prevention and drainage of composite asphalt pavement structure in expressway tunnels.The achievements of research show the realistic significance for establishment and maintenance of composite asphalt pavement in Chongqing expressway tunnels,improving the service performance,service lifetime and service level of tunnel pavement,reducing maintenance cost and enhancing the safety and comprehensive benefits of highway tunnel operation.

Abstract:<p>Cities worldwide continue to face severe water management problems. Therefore, researchers have endeavored to study stormwater management alternatives. However, the uncertainties in the outcomes of such scenarios and the inherent vagueness in human judgment are seldom considered in stormwater-related decision-making. Accordingly, this study developed a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) framework for designing permeable pavements, mainly comprising <strong>hydrologic, hydraulic, water quality, and economic criteria</strong>. The inputs and outputs were fuzzy instead of crisp numbers, to account for uncertainties. To illustrate the framework, a campus in Shanghai, China, was chosen as a case study. First, five permeable pavement design scenarios (SC1–SC5) were developed. The differences between SC1–SC3 were in the vehicle lanes, whereas those among SC3–SC5 were in the other light-load roads. Subsequently, expert opinion and stormwater management model (SWMM) simulation results were used as inputs to the framework. The results suggest that permeable pavements can effectively reduce surface runoff and pollutants but may lead to an increase in the conduit peak flow, owing to a reverse flow. In addition, adopting permeable pavements on vehicle lanes is less cost-effective than adopting them on light-load roads. Scenario SC5, which applied permeable pavements to 26% of the study area, was found to offer significant hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality advantages over the other scenarios.</p>

Research on the Reduction Performance of Surface Runoff Pollution Through Permeable Pavement with Different Structures

Abstract:Permeable pavements (PPs) are used to address water quality impacts from urban roads. However, the effectiveness of different structure combinations in removing runoff pollutants throughout the permeable system remains unclear. In this study, 26 PP structures were tested to investigate their pollutant removal efficiency by the self-developed laboratory apparatus to provide a quantitative understanding of these combinations. The results showed PP was the most effective in removing total suspended solids (TSS) and lead (Pb) among all pollutants studied, with maximum removal rates of 91% and 96%, respectively. PP also can remove ammonia (NH4+-N), nitrogen (TN), phosphorous (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) to some extent; the removal rate was 1 ~ 36%. Furthermore, the pollutant removal efficiency was not dependent on a simple stacked combination of structures or materials. The combined surface structure of permeable asphalt mixture (PAM) and permeable cement concrete (PCC) was more effective in removing runoff pollutants than a single surface structure of the same thickness, and the optimal surface layer thickness (8 cm) and base course thickness (26 cm) of PCC were recommended respectively. Based on experiment findings, the relationships between TSS removal rates and the other six pollutants were established, and independent target pollutants removal rates (75%, 80%, 85%) based on TSS were selected for proposing a series of PP structures and thicknesses. The insights generated from this study will help in the design and implementation of PP for runoff pollution abatement.

Abstract:Urban road surfaces are one of the most important stormwater pollution sources. Asphalt and concrete road surfaces are typical road types in China and have different characteristics such as roughness, textures and infiltration rates. This could lead to differences of collecting and retaining pollutants. In this context, designing stormwater treatment for different road surfaces respectively is crucial to effectively minimize the stormwater deterioration. This closely depends on an in-depth understanding of stormwater quality characteristics on urban road surfaces. This research study investigated the stormwater quality characteristics on typical asphalt and concrete surfaces. The research outcomes show that road surface characteristics could play a more important role in influencing the resulting stormwater runoff quality than rainfall characteristics. Additionally, asphalt surface due to the relatively rough nature could play a more important role in influencing the overall pollutant export characteristics from urban road surfaces. It is also noted that there are notable differences in pollutant wash-off processes on different surfaces, where the wash-off process on asphalt surfaces tends to be a transport limiting process, while the wash-off process on concrete surfaces tends to be a source limiting process. These results can contribute to stormwater treatment design enhancement for urban roads such as treatment placement, rainfall event selection and water quality estimation.
Study on Variation of Surface Runoff and Soil Moisture Content in the Subgrade of Permeable Pavement Structure

Abstract:The self-designed indoor simulated rainfall device was used to rain on five types of pavement structures with 4 types of rainfall intensity (2.5 mm/min, 3.4 mm/min, 4.6 mm/min, and 5.5 mm/min). The effect of rainfall intensity on the surface runoff, the relation between the subgrade soil moisture content changes, and the influence of initial soil water content on rain infiltration rate are studied. The test results show that the surface runoff coefficient of densely asphalted pavement is greater than 90% in drainage pavements and it has little influence on the reducing and hysteresis of the flood peak. The surface runoff coefficient of large-void asphalt pavement (permeable) is less than 40%. Although the large-void asphalt pavement (permeable) can reduce a small amount of surface runoff, it has no obvious effect on the reduction and hysteresis of the flood peak. In semipermeable pavement, with the increasing of the thickness of base (graded gravel), the surface runoff coefficient decreases at different rainfall intensities, parts of the surface runoff are reduced, and the arrival of flood peaks is delayed. In permeable roads, almost no surface runoff occurred. As time continued, the soil moisture content quickly reached a saturated state and presented a stable infiltration situation under the action of gravity and the gradient of soil water suction. As the initial moisture content increases, the initial infiltration rate decreases and the time to reach a stable infiltration rate becomes shorter. The drier the soil, the greater the initial infiltration rate and the higher the soil moisture content after infiltration stabilization. Permeable roads can greatly alleviate the pressure of urban drainage and reduce the risk of storms and floods.

Abstract:The use of recycled aggregate (RA) in pervious concrete (PC) is a green approach that can effectively mitigate urban waterlogging, excessive RA, and runoff pollution, thereby enhancing the urban ecological environment. This article focuses on the long-term purification efficiency of runoff pollutants by PC at different porosities and RA dosages. Moreover, the purification mechanism of pollutants by recycled aggregate pervious concrete (RAPC) was revealed utilizing particle size analysis, microstructure, and elemental analysis. Finally, the recovery effects of different maintenance approaches on the purification capacity of RAPC were explored. The results indicate that an increase in the RA dosage reduced the effective porosity of PC, thereby decreasing the permeability of RAPC. In addition, PC with a lower porosity demonstrated a slightly greater purification effectiveness for pollutants. However, the utilization of RA significantly enhanced the purification capacity of PC for various pollutants, primarily by leveraging advantages in terms of pore structure, micromorphology, and surface chemical composition. Additionally, RAPC exhibited nearly 100 % retention effectiveness for particles larger than 68.95 μm but relatively lower purification efficiency for particles ranging from 1.541 to 17.11 μm. In particular, it displayed the poorest purification performance for particles with a diameter of 6.396 μm. The surface of RAPC's pore channels exhibited a loose state with high porosity and appeared rough and uneven with numerous pits and grooves. RAPC had a larger surface area and contained more components, such as SiO 2 , CaCO 3 , and Al 2 O 3 , than regular PC. Therefore, RAPC possessed a higher purification capacity. High-pressure flushing (HPF) and sodium citrate flushing (SCF) under different maintenance frequencies significantly contributed to the recovery of the purification efficiency of RAPC. However, overall, a lower maintenance frequency led to a less favorable recovery effect. Furthermore, SCF had a better recovery effect than HPF.

Abstract:Collecting road rainfall runoff for the irrigation of roadside green belts can not only enhance the rainwater utilization efficiency,but also reduce the cost of maintaining green land.The water quality characteristic of urban road runoff and the situation of pollution control play important roles in the realization of the road rainfall harvesting irrigation.The research on water quality and pollution control of urban road runoff is at the primary stage at present in China.So,according to the special requirements of irrigation water quality for green land,further research on water quality and pollution control of rainfall,the change of vegetation quality and physical and chemical properties of soil after rainfall erosion,should be conducted.And different water saving irrigation methods should be developed according to the characteristics of tree,shrub and grass along roadside.

Abstract:China is at present experiencing a very rapid urbanization process, which has brought a number of adverse impacts upon the water environment. In particular, urban runoff quantity and quality control have emerged as one of the key concerns for municipal officials. One of the strategies being considered is the use of a Low Impact Development type of Best Management Practices (LID BMPs) for urban storm water runoff quantity and quality control. In this paper, the situation surrounding urban runoff control in China is reviewed first. Then the conventional strategy and technologies for the construction and management of urban drainage systems are discussed, while exploring their inherent dilemmas. The LID BMPs are then introduced to control urban runoff in the context of urban sustainable water systems. After the comprehensive analysis of the various LID BMPs, the advances in LID BMPs research and practice for urban runoff control in China are investigated and summarized. At last, the difficulties of implementing LID BMPs in China are discussed, and a direction for the future is proposed.

Abstract:Permeable pavement is a widely used stormwater runoff blocking technology in sponge city construction. Its application to urban motorized/non-motorized roads is expected to reduce runoff and pollution loads. This study aimed to analyze the nutrient pollution, thermal pollution reduction efficiency and removal pathways of cement permeable bricks (CP-B-Cement), steel slag permeable bricks (SP-B), ceramic permeable bricks (CP-B-Ceramic) and permeable asphalt pavement (PAP) under different pollution loads and rainfall intensities by simulating the different stormwater runoffs. Results indicated that the effluent concentration of different permeable pavements increased with the extension of rainfall duration. Compared to impermeable pavements, the infiltration and water storage capacities of permeable pavements could effectively remove typical pollutants from stormwater runoff. However, the effluent concentrations of all pollutants did not reach the threshold of Class V according to the Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water except for TP and Zn. Meanwhile, the thermal pollution removal capacity of the permeable pavements ranking from the highest to the lowest was SP-B > CP-B-Cement > CP-B-Ceramic > PAP. The findings in this study provide references for the selection of stormwater source reduction facilities and the development of surface source pollution countermeasures.

Abstract:Urban roads play a key role in sponge city construction, especially because of their drainage functions. However, efficient methods to enhance their drainage performance are still lacking. Here, we propose a new strategy to combine roads, green spaces, and the drainage system. Generally, by considering the organization of the runoff and the construction of the drainage system (including sponge city facilities) as the core of the strategy, the drainage and traffic functions were combined. This new strategy was implemented in a pilot study of road reconstruction conducted in Zhangjiagang, Suzhou, China. Steel slag was used in the structural layers to enhance the water permeability of the pavement and the removal of runoff pollutants. The combined effects of this system and of the ribbon biological retention zone, allowed achieving an average removal rate of suspended solids, a chemical oxygen demand, a removal of total nitrogen and total phosphorus of 71.60%, 78.35%, 63.93%, and 49.47%; in contrast, a traditional road could not perform as well. Furthermore, the volume control rate of the annual runoff met the construction requirements (70%). The results of the present study indicate that, combining the traditional basic functions of roads with those of landscape and drainage might be a promising strategy for sponge city construction of urban road.

An Approach Toward Environment-Friendly Urban Roads

Abstract:In order to improve the conditions of urban road surroundings and make cities livable, a new development of environment-friendly urban roads is presented. It features three key points, i.e., sunken greenbelts, sidewalks built on stilts, and limited roadway width. First, considering natural water cycling, a greenbelt with its own drainage facilities is elaborately designed lower than the roadway. As a result, the greenbelts can be used not only for roadways separation, but also for rainwater infiltration into soil. If the total width of greenbelts is too small to meet the requirement of rainwater infiltration, a design of sidewalks built on stilts is a good choice. The proposed design can achieve ecologically to compensate groundwater with rain. This.promotes the only drainage system of traditional urban roads to the infiltration-detention-drainage system. Second, since summer solarization on asphaltic road surfaces could produce harmful poison, it is recommended that the roadway be shaded by roadside trees as much as possible. Therefore, the roadway width should be limited and its maximum value can be determined depending on the average crown diameters of local trees. The road design approach is practical, particularly for most cities short of water in north and northwest China.

Abstract:Pavement preventive maintenance (PPM) is critical to ensuring traffic efficiency, road user experience, and safety. However, it imposes significant costs in annual road infrastructure budgets because it requires high-quality and natural material resources. This study provides a systematic and comprehensive review on the use of recycled wastes as an alternative for the natural materials used in PPM mixes. Specifically, the use of recycled waste tires (RWT) and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in chip seals, microsurfacing, slurry seals, and thin asphalt overlays were discussed. The current state-of-practice in terms of material specification and mix design were comprehensively investigated for PPM mixes containing RAP (RAP-PPM) and PPM with RWT (RWT-PPM). Laboratory and field performances of waste-treated PPM mixes were elaborated and compared with conventional PPM treatments to determine the feasibility of the RAP-PPM and RWT-PPM technologies. Furthermore, current research gaps were identified, and prospects for future investigations were discussed. It is envisaged that this study can provide a sufficient theoretical basis for the widespread practical application and beneficial use of this valuable technology, towards promoting sustainability in pavement maintenance practice.
