Abstract:The identification of quasars at intermediate redshifts (2.2 < z < 3.5) has been inefficient in most previous quasar surveys since the optical colors of quasars are similar to those of stars. The near-IR K-band excess technique has been suggested to overcome this difficulty. Our recent study also proposed to use optical/near-IR colors for selecting z < 4 quasars. To verify the effectiveness of this method, we selected a list of 105 unidentified bright targets with i ⩽ 18.5 from the quasar candidates of SDSS DR6 with both SDSS ugriz optical and UKIDSS YJHK near-IR photometric data, which satisfy our proposed Y − K/g − z criterion and have photometric redshifts between 2.2 and 3.5 estimated from the nine-band SDSS-UKIDSS data. We observed 43 targets with the BFOSC instrument on the 2.16 m optical telescope at Xinglong station of the National Astronomical Observatory of China in the spring of 2012. We spectroscopically identified 36 targets as quasars with redshifts between 2.1 and 3.4. The high success rate of discovering these quasars in the SDSS spectroscopic surveyed area further demonstrates the robustness of both the Y − K/g − z selection criterion and the photometric redshift estimation technique. We also used the above criterion to investigate the possible stellar contamination rate among the quasar candidates of SDSS DR6, and found that the rate is much higher when selecting 3 < z < 3.5 quasar candidates than when selecting lower redshift candidates (z < 2.2). The significant improvement in the photometric redshift estimation when using the nine-band SDSS-UKIDSS data over the five-band SDSS data is demonstrated and a catalog of 7727 unidentified quasar candidates in SDSS DR6 selected with optical/near-IR colors and having photometric redshifts between 2.2 and 3.5 is provided. We also tested the Y − K/g − z selection criterion with the recently released SDSS-III/DR9 quasar catalog and found that 96.2% of 17,999 DR9 quasars with UKIDSS Y- and K-band data satisfy our criterion. With some available samples of red quasars and type II quasars, we find that 88% and 96.5% of these objects can be selected by the Y − K/g − z criterion, respectively, which supports our claim that using the Y − K/g − z criterion efficiently selects both unobscured and obscured quasars. We discuss the implications of our results on the ongoing and upcoming large optical and near-IR sky surveys.

Abstract:The identification of quasars in the redshift range 2.2 < z < 3 is known to be very inefficient because the optical colors of such quasars are indistinguishable from those of stars. Recent studies have proposed using optical variability or near-infrared (near-IR) colors to improve the identification of the missing quasars in this redshift range. Here we present a case study combining both methods. We select a sample of 70 quasar candidates from variables in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82, which are non-ultraviolet excess sources and have UKIDSS near-IR public data. They are clearly separated into two parts on the Y - K/g - z color-color diagram, and 59 of them meet or lie close to a newly proposed Y -K/g - z selection criterion for z < 4 quasars. Of these 59 sources, 44 were previously identified as quasars in SDSS DR7, and 35 of them are quasars at 2.2 < z < 3. We present spectroscopic observations of 14 of 15 remaining quasar candidates using the Bok 2.3 m telescope and the MMT 6.5 m telescope, and successfully identify all of them as new quasars at z = 2.36-2.88. We also apply this method to a sample of 643 variable quasar candidates with SDSS-UKIDSS nine-band photometric data selected from 1875 new quasar candidates in SDSS Stripe 82 given by Butler & Bloom based on the time-series selections, and find that 188 of them are probably new quasars with photometric redshifts at 2.2 < z < 3. Our results indicate that the combination of optical variability and optical/near-IR colors is probably the most efficient way to find 2.2 < z < 3 quasars and is very helpful for constructing a complete quasar sample. We discuss its implications for ongoing and upcoming large optical and near-IR sky surveys.
FINDING MISSING QUASARS IN THE 'REDSHIFT DESERT'

Abstract:Quasars at high redshift can help us to probe the nature of the early universe. Current quasar sample is incomplete in the redshift range from 2.2 to 3 because of the similar quasar colors as stars in the optical band. The main objective of the Chinese LAMOST spectroscopic quasar survey is to discover these missing quasars and provide a quasar sample consisting of 0.3million new quasars brighter than the magnitude limit i = 20.5 in the next 5 years. This will hopefully provide the largest quasar sample for the further studies of AGN physics and cosmology. The improved quasar selection criteria based on the UKIDSS near-IR and SDSS optical colors are introduced, and their advantages in uncovering the missing quasars in the quasar 'redshift desert' (z=2.2 to 3) are demonstrated. We also present some recent discoveries of new quasars from the LAMOST commissioning and other spectroscopic observations. The implications of our study to the ongoing and upcoming large optical and near-IR sky surveys are discussed.

Abstract:ABSTRACT High-redshift quasars are important tracers of structure and evolution in the early universe. However, they are very rare and difficult to find when using color selection because of contamination from late-type dwarfs. High-redshift quasar surveys based on only optical colors suffer from incompleteness and low identification efficiency, especially at z ≳ 4.5 ?> . We have developed a new method to select 4.7 ≲ z ≲ 5.4 ?> quasars with both high efficiency and completeness by combining optical and mid-IR Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) photometric data, and are conducting a luminous z ∼ 5 ?> quasar survey in the whole Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) footprint. We have spectroscopically observed 99 out of 110 candidates with z-band magnitudes brighter than 19.5, and 64 (64.6%) of them are quasars with redshifts of 4.4 ≲ z ≲ 5.5 ?> and absolute magnitudes of − 29 ≲ M 1450 ≲ − 26.4 ?> . In addition, we also observed 14 fainter candidates selected with the same criteria and identified 8 (57.1%) of them as quasars with 4.7 < z < 5.4 ?> . Among 72 newly identified quasars, 12 of them are at 5.2 < z < 5.7 ?> , which leads to an increase of ∼36% of the number of known quasars at this redshift range. More importantly, our identifications doubled the number of quasars with M 1450 < − 27.5 ?> at z > 4.5 ?> , which will set strong constraints on the bright end of the quasar luminosity function. We also expand our method to select quasars at z ≳ 5.7. In this paper we report the discovery of four new luminous z ≳ 5.7 quasars based on SDSS–WISE selection.
High-Redshift Quasars Found in Sloan Digital Sky Survey Commissioning Data III: A Color Selected Sample at i^*<20 in the Fall Equatorial Stripe

Abstract:This is the third paper in a series aimed at finding high-redshift quasars from five-color (u'g'r'i'z') imaging data taken along the Celestial Equator by the SDSS during its commissioning phase. In this paper, we first present the observations of 14 bright high-redshift quasars (3.66<z<4.77, i^*<20) discovered in the SDSS Fall Equatorial Stripe, and the SDSS photometry of two previously known high-redshift quasars in the same region of the sky. Combined with the quasars presented in previous papers, we define a color-selected flux-limited sample of 39 quasars at 3.6 < z < 5.0 and i^*<20, covering a total effective area of 182 deg^2. From this sample, we estimate the average spectral power law slope in the rest-frame ultraviolet for quasars at z~4 to be -0.79 with a standard deviation of 0.34, and the average rest-frame equivalent width of the Ly alpha+N V emission line to be 69 A with a standard deviation of 18 A. The selection completeness of this multicolor sample is determined from the model colors of high-redshift quasars, taking into account the distributions of emission line strengths, intrinsic continuum slope, the line and continuum absorption from intervening material, and the effects of photometric errors. The average completeness of this sample is about 75%. The selection function calculated in this paper will be used to correct the incompleteness of this color-selected sample and to derive the high-redshift quasar luminosity function in a subsequent paper. In the Appendix, we present the observations of an additional 18 faint quasars (3.57<z<4.80, 20.1<i^*<20.8) discovered in the region on the sky that has been imaged twice. Several quasars presented in this paper exhibit interesting properties, including a radio-loud quasar at z=4.77, and a narrow-line quasar (FWHM = 1500 km s^-1) at z=3.57.

Discovery of 16 New Z ∼ 5.5 Quasars: Filling in the Redshift Gap of Quasar Color Selection

Abstract:We present initial results from the first systematic survey of luminous z similar to 5.5 quasars. Quasars at z similar to 5.5, the post-reionization epoch, are crucial tools to explore the evolution of intergalactic medium, quasar evolution, and the early super-massive black hole growth. However, it has been very challenging to select quasars at redshifts 5.3 <= z <= 5.7 using conventional color selections, due to their similar optical colors to late-type stars, especially M dwarfs, resulting in a glaring redshift gap in quasar redshift distributions. We develop a new selection technique for z similar to 5.5 quasars based on optical, near-IR, and mid-IR photometric data from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), UKIRT InfraRed Deep Sky Surveys-Large Area Survey (ULAS), VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS), and Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer. From our pilot observations in the SDSS-ULAS/VHS area, we have discovered 15 new quasars at 5.3. z. 5.7 and 6 new lower redshift quasars, with SDSS z band magnitude brighter than 20.5. Including other two z similar to 5.5 quasars already published in our previous work, we now construct a uniform quasar sample at 5.3 <= z <= 5.7, with 17 quasars in a similar to 4800 square degree survey area. For further application in a larger survey area, we apply our selection pipeline to do a test selection by using the new wide field J-band photometric data from a preliminary version of the UKIRT Hemisphere Survey (UHS). We successfully discover the first UHS selected z similar to 5.5 quasar.
Infrared spectroscopic confirmation of z~2 photometrically-selected obscured quasars

Abstract:The census of obscured quasar populations is incomplete, and remains a major unsolved problem, especially at higher redshifts, where we expect a greater density of galaxy formation and quasar activity. We present Gemini GNIRS near-infrared spectroscopy of 24 luminous obscured quasar candidates from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's Stripe 82 region. The targets were photometrically selected using a WISE/W4 selection technique that is optimized to identify IR-bright and heavily-reddened/optically-obscured targets at $z>1$. We detect emission lines of ${\rm H\alpha}$, ${\rm H\beta}$, and/or ${\rm[ O~III]}$ in 23 sources allowing us to measure spectroscopic redshifts in the range $1<z<3$ with bolometric luminosities spanning $L=10^{46.3}-10^{47.3}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We observe broad $10^3-10^4$ km s$^{-1}$ Balmer emissions with large ${\rm H\alpha}/{\rm H\beta}$ ratios, and we directly observe a heavily reddened rest-frame optical continuum in several sources, suggesting high extinction ($A_V\sim7-20$ mag). Our observations demonstrate that such optical/infrared photometric selection successfully recovers high-redshift obscured quasars. The successful identification of previously undetected red, obscured high-redshift quasar candidates suggests that there are more obscured quasars yet to be discovered.

Abstract:With a recently constructed composite quasar spectrum and the chi(2) minimization technique, we describe a general method for estimating the photometric redshifts of a large sample of quasars by deriving theoretical color-redshift relations and comparing the theoretical colors with the observed ones. We estimated the photometric redshifts from the 5-band SDSS photometric data of 18678 quasars in the first major data release of SDSS and compared them with their spectroscopic redshifts. The difference is less than 0.1 for 47% of the quasars and less than 0.2 for 68%. Based on the calculation of the theoretical color-color diagrams of stars, galaxies and quasars both on the SDSS system and on the BATC system, we expect that we would be able to select candidates of high redshift quasars more efficaciously with the latter than with the former, provided the BATC survey can detect objects with magnitudes fainter than 21.

Abstract:We present a new algorithm to estimate quasar photometric redshifts (photo-zs), by considering the asymmetries in the relative flux distributions of quasars. The relative flux models are built with multivariate Skew-t distributions in the multidimensional space of relative fluxes as a function of redshift and magnitude. For 151,392 quasars in the SDSS, we achieve a photo-z accuracy, defined as the fraction of quasars with the difference between the photo-z zp and the spectroscopic redshift zs, within 0.1, of 74%. Combining the WISE W1 and W2 infrared data with the SDSS data, the photo-z accuracy is enhanced to 87%. Using the Pan-STARRS1 or DECaLS photometry with WISE W1 and W2 data, the photo-z accuracies are 79% and 72%, respectively. The prior probabilities as a function of magnitude for quasars, stars, and galaxies are calculated, respectively, based on (1) the quasar luminosity function, (2) the Milky Way synthetic simulation with the Besançon model, and (3) the Bayesian Galaxy Photometric Redshift estimation. The relative fluxes of stars are obtained with the Padova isochrones, and the relative fluxes of galaxies are modeled through galaxy templates. We test our classification method to select quasars using the DECaLS g, r, z, and WISE W1 and W2 photometry. The quasar selection completeness is higher than 70% for a wide redshift range , and a wide magnitude range mag. Our photo-z regression and classification method has the potential to extend to future surveys. The photo-z code will be publicly available.

Abstract:The redshift range from 2.2 to 3 is known as the 'redshift desert' of quasars because quasars with redshifts in this range have similar optical colors as normal stars and are thus difficult to find in optical sky surveys. A quasar candidate, SDSS J085543.40-001517.7, which was selected by a recently proposed criterion involving near-IR Y - K and optical g - z colors, was identified spectroscopically as a new quasar with a redshift of 2.427 by the Guoshoujing Telescope (LAMOST) commissioning observation in 2009 December and confirmed by the observation made with the NAOC/Xinglong 2.16m telescope in 2010 March. This quasar was not identified in the SDSS spectroscopic survey. Comparing with other SDSS quasars, we found that this new quasar, with an i magnitude of 16.44, is apparently the brightest one in the redshift range from 2.3 to 2.7. From its spectral properties, we derived its central black hole mass to be (1.4 similar to 3.9) x 10(10) M(circle dot) and its bolometric luminosity to be 3.7 x 10(48) erg s(-1), which indicates that this new quasar is intrinsically very bright and belongs to the class of the most luminous quasars in the universe. Our identification supports the notion that quasars in the redshift desert can be found by the quasar selection criterion involving the near-IR colors. More missing quasars are expected to be uncovered by future LAMOST spectroscopic surveys, which is important to the study of the cosmological evolution of quasars at redshifts higher than 2.2.

Abstract:We report the discovery of 6 radio-quiet, X-ray luminous quasars with redshifts larger than 1.3. 3 of them have redshifts larger than 2. They were selected from Hamburg objective prism plates and identified by optical spectroscopic observations with the 2.16-m telescope of Beijing Astronomical Observatory. This discovery substantially increases the number of high-redshift radio-quiet, X-ray luminous quasars detected in the ROSAT All Sky Survey.

Abstract:We present the final results from our survey of luminous z similar to 5.5 quasars. This is the first systematic quasar survey focusing on quasars at z similar to 5.5, during the post-reionization epoch. It has been challenging to select quasars at 5.3 < z < 5.7 using conventional color selections, due to their similar optical colors to those of late-type stars, especially M dwarfs. We developed a new selection technique for z similar to 5.5 quasars based on optical, near-infrared (IR), and mid-IR photometry, using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), PanSTARR1 (PS1), the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Surveys-Large Area Survey, the UKIRT Hemisphere Survey, the VISTA Hemisphere Survey, and the Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer, covering similar to 11,000 deg(2) of high galactic latitude sky. In this paper, we present the discovery of 15 new quasars at 5.22 >= z >= 5.78. Together with results from Yang et al., our survey provides a complete, flux-limited sample of 31 quasars at 5.3 >= z >= 5.7. We measure the quasar spatial density at z similar to 5.5 and M1450 < -26.2. Our result is consistent with the rapid decline of the quasar spatial density from z = 5 to 6, with k = -0.66 +/- 0.05 (rho(z) alpha 10(kz)). In addition, we present a new survey using optical colors only from the full PS1 area for luminous quasars at z = 5.0-5.5, which is beyond the SDSS footprint, and report the preliminary results from this survey, including 51 new quasars discovered at 4.61 <= z <= 5.71.

Abstract:We present a catalog of 37,842 quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7, which have counterparts within 6 '' in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) Preliminary Data Release. The overall WISE detection rate of the SDSS quasars is 86.7%, and it decreases to less than 50.0% when the quasar magnitude is fainter than i = 20.5. We derive the median color-redshift relations based on this SDSS-WISE quasar sample and apply them to estimate the photometric redshifts of the SDSS-WISE quasars. We find that by adding the WISE W1- and W2-band data to the SDSS photometry we can increase the photometric redshift reliability, defined as the percentage of sources with photometric and spectroscopic redshift difference less than 0.2, from 70.3% to 77.2%. We also obtain the samples of WISE-detected normal and late-type stars with SDSS spectroscopy, and present a criterion in the z-W1 versus g-z color-color diagram, z-W1 > 0.66(g-z) + 2.01, to separate quasars from stars. With this criterion we can recover 98.6% of 3089 radio-detected SDSS-WISE quasars with redshifts less than four and overcome the difficulty in selecting quasars with redshifts between 2.2 and 3 from SDSS photometric data alone. We also suggest another criterion involving the WISE color only, W1-W2 > 0.57, to efficiently separate quasars with redshifts less than 3.2 from stars. In addition, we compile a catalog of 5614 SDSS quasars detected by both WISE and UKIDSS surveys and present their color-redshift relations in the optical and infrared bands. By using the SDSS ugriz, UKIDSS, YJHK, and WISE W1- and W2-band photometric data, we can efficiently select quasar candidates and increase the photometric redshift reliability up to 87.0%. We discuss the implications of our results on the future quasar surveys. An updated SDSS-WISE quasar catalog consisting of 101,853 quasars with the recently released WISE all-sky data is also provided.

Abstract:This is the third paper in a series aimed at finding reionization-era quasars with the combination of DESI Legacy imaging Surveys (DELS), the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) Survey, and near-infrared imaging surveys, such as the UKIRT Hemisphere Survey (UHS), as well as the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mid-infrared survey. In this paper, we describe the updated quasar candidate selection procedure, report the discovery of 16 quasars at 6.4 ≲ z ≲ 6.9 from an area of ∼13,020 deg2, and present the quasar luminosity function (QLF) at z ∼ 6.7. The measured QLF follows in the magnitude range −27.6 < M1450 < −25.5. We determine the quasar comoving spatial density at = 6.7 and M1450 < −26.0 to be 0.39 ± 0.11 Gpc−3 and find the exponential density evolution parameter to be k = −0.78 ± 0.18 from z ∼ 6 to z ∼ 6.7, corresponding to a rapid decline by a factor of ∼6 per unit redshift toward earlier epochs. This indicates that the rapid decline of quasar spatial density at z > 5 that was found by previous works continues to z > 6, at a rate significantly faster than the average decline rate between z ∼ 3 and 5. We measured quasar comoving emissivity at z ∼ 6.7, which indicates that high-redshift quasars are highly unlikely to make a significant contribution to hydrogen reionization. The broad absorption line quasar fraction at z ≳ 6.5 is measured to be ≳22%. In addition, we also report the discovery of six additional quasars at z ∼ 6 in the Appendix.
Efficient Selection of Quasar Candidates Based on Optical and Infrared Photometric Data Using Machine Learning

Abstract:We aim to select quasar candidates based on the two large survey databases, Pan-STARRS and AllWISE. Exploring the distribution of quasars and stars in the color spaces, we find that the combination of infrared and optical photometry is more conducive to select quasar candidates. Two new color criterions (yW1W2 and izW1W2) are constructed to distinguish quasars from stars efficiently. With izW1W2, 98.30% of star contamination is eliminated, while 99.50% of quasars are retained, at least to the magnitude limit of our training set of stars. Based on the optical and infrared color features, we put forward an efficient schema to select quasar candidates and high redshift quasar candidates, in which two machine learning algorithms (XGBoost and SVM) are implemented. The XGBoost and SVM classifiers have proven to be very effective with accuracy of 99.46% when 8Color as input pattern and default model parameters. Applying the two optimal classifiers to the unknown Pan-STARRS and AllWISE cross-matched data set, a total of 2,006,632 intersected sources are predicted to be quasar candidates given quasar probability larger than 0.5 (i.e. P_QSO>0.5). Among them, 1,201,211 have high probability (P_QSO>0.95). For these newly predicted quasar candidates, a regressor is constructed to estimate their redshifts. Finally 7,402 z>3.5 quasars are obtained. Given the magnitude limitation and site of the LAMOST telescope, part of these candidates will be used as the input catalogue of the LAMOST telescope for follow-up observation, and the rest may be observed by other telescopes.

Abstract:We report the results of a faint quasar survey in a one-square-degree field. The aim is to test the and color selection criteria for quasars at faint magnitudes to obtain a complete sample of quasars based on deep optical and near-infrared color–color selection and to measure the faint end of the quasar luminosity function (QLF) over a wide redshift range. We carried out a quasar survey based on the and quasar selection criteria, using the deep Y-band data obtained from our CFHT/WIRCam Y-band images in a two-degree field within the F22 field of the VIMOS VLT deep survey, optical co-added data from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 and deep near-infrared data from the UKIDSS Deep Extragalactic Survey in the same field. We discovered 25 new quasars at and mag within one-square-degree field. The survey significantly increases the number of faint quasars in this field, especially at . It confirms that our color selections are highly complete in a wide redshift range ( ), especially over the quasar number density peak at , even for faint quasars. Combining all previous known quasars and new discoveries, we construct a sample with 109 quasars and measure the binned QLF and parametric QLF. Although the sample is small, our results agree with a pure luminosity evolution at lower redshift and luminosity evolution and density evolution model at redshift .

Abstract:Abstract Distant quasars are unique tracers to study the formation of the earliest supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the history of cosmic reionization. Despite extensive efforts, only two quasars have been found at z ≥ 7.5, due to a combination of their low spatial density and the high contamination rate in quasar selection. We report the discovery of a luminous quasar at z = 7.642, J0313−1806, the most distant quasar yet known. This quasar has a bolometric luminosity of 3.6 × 10 13 L ⊙ . Deep spectroscopic observations reveal a SMBH with a mass of (1.6 ± 0.4) × 10 9 M ⊙ in this quasar. The existence of such a massive SMBH just ∼670 million years after the big bang challenges significantly theoretical models of SMBH growth. In addition, the quasar spectrum exhibits strong broad absorption line (BAL) features in C iv and Si iv , with a maximum velocity close to 20% of the speed of light. The relativistic BAL features, combined with a strongly blueshifted C iv emission line, indicate that there is a strong active galactic nucleus (AGN)-driven outflow in this system. Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations detect the dust continuum and [C ii ] emission from the quasar host galaxy, yielding an accurate redshift of 7.6423 ± 0.0013 and suggesting that the quasar is hosted by an intensely star-forming galaxy, with a star formation rate of ∼200 M ⊙ yr −1 and a dust mass of ∼7 × 10 7 M ⊙ . Follow-up observations of this reionization-era BAL quasar will provide a powerful probe of the effects of AGN feedback on the growth of the earliest massive galaxies.

Abstract:We report the discovery of five quasars with redshifts of 4.67–5.27 and z′-band magnitudes of 19.5–20.7 (MB ∼ -27). All were originally selected as distant quasar candidates in optical/near-infrared photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and most were confirmed as probable high-redshift quasars by supplementing the SDSS data with J and K measurements. The quasars possess strong, broad Lyα emission lines, with the characteristic sharp cutoff on the blue side produced by Lyα forest absorption. Three quasars contain strong, broad absorption features, and one of them exhibits very strong N V emission. The amount of absorption produced by the Lyα forest increases toward higher redshift, and that in the z = 5.27 object (DA ≈ 0.7) is consistent with a smooth extrapolation of the absorption seen in lower redshift quasars. The high luminosity of these objects relative to most other known objects at z ≳ 5 makes them potentially valuable as probes of early quasar properties and of the intervening intergalactic medium.
