Abstract:Building intelligent system has become one of the standard configurations in a public building even in a residential building. Intelligent buildings are expected to provide high-efficient, convenient, comfortable and energy-saving built environment so as to bring additional benefits. However, problems like sensor faults and control strategy flaws may result in low performance and high energy consumptions and maintenance costs are needed as well. Thus it is needed to synthetically evaluate the costs and benefits of intelligent systems to help building investors to make decisions. This paper proposes a cost-benefit evaluation method for building intelligent systems. Life cycle net present value (NPV) of all the costs and benefits, including tangible and intangible, is used as an index to evaluate the performance of the building intelligent systems. The proposed method puts emphases on the quantitative evaluation of intangible benefits using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to determine the weights of each aspects of intangible benefit. The building energy consumptions are taken as an another emphasis as well. The proposed method is applied to evaluate three actual buildings to check its feasibility and effectiveness. Sensitivity analysis of NPV to energy consumption of the case study buildings shows that the energy consumption increase or decrease caused by different performances of intelligent systems can influence the positive or negative of NPV, which implies the building intelligent systems are worth of investment or not. Abstract:The international organization's concept of performance evaluation designing for agricultural building project is the result-oriented,which can ensure the unity of the project's monitoring and evaluating,bear logical relation and is better for analyzing the factors for realizing the goals.But the internal performance evaluation index system of the government usually checks and controls the projects but lacks of integrity and unity.It falls short of performance evaluation.So we need progressively complete the correlative institution and methods in practice and build the Chinese performance evaluation designing for agricultural building project.

Abstract:For the purpose of achieving high performance of intelligent buildings, it needs to pay expanses for maintaining the intelligent systems. So it is in great need to analyze the costs and benefits of building intelligent system to help building owners to make decision on installing intelligent systems or not. This paper proposes an investment-benefit assessing approach for building intelligent systems. Net Present Value (NPV) is used as an index to evaluate the performance of building intelligent system. The NPV is calculated by analyzing the initial capital investment, maintenance costs, and the tangible and intangible benefits in building life cycle. The intangible benefits are quantified using a series of indexes which represent the cash flows brought by the intangible benefits. Different weights of these indexes are used to express the different contributions of these intangible benefits. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method [ is used to quantify the weights of the indexes.

Abstract:During the design stage of an HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system in a construction project, designers must decide on the most workable design scheme for the plant room in the building based on the evaluation of multiple aspects related to system performance that need to be considered, such as energy efficiency, economic effectiveness, etc. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a comprehensive evaluation method for the plant rooms of centralized air-conditioning systems in commercial buildings. This new method consists of two analyses used in tandem: Building Performance Simulation (BPS) models and a collection of real HVAC design cases (the carried-out design solutions). The BPS models and a knowledge of the reduction approach based on Rough Set (RS) theory are used to generate data and weight factors for the indices of energy efficiency; and the real design cases are employed with a heuristic algorithm to extract the compiled empirical information for other evaluation items of the centralized HVAC system. In addition, this paper also demonstrates an application in an actual case of a building construction project. By comparing the expert decision-making process and the evaluation results, it is found that they are basically consistent, which verifies the reasonability of the comprehensive evaluation method.

Abstract:Building energy performance evaluation, as an important process in a sustainable building design, has important consequences for global energy conservation and environmental protection. The traditional methods to perform this evaluation are usually time-consuming and computationally complex, and have high requirements for designers’ professional knowledge on architectural physics and software operation skills. To solve these problems and provide rapid, user-friendly, and more accurate prediction results, this study presents an efficient building energy performance evaluation method which integrates building information modeling, energy simulation, and energy consumption prediction together. This method follows a three-stage research framework: Stage 1 proposes a rapid 3D building energy modeling process according to the parameterized setting, Stage 2 generates numerous simulation results automatically by EnergyPlus, and Stage 3 develops the user-friendly building energy consumption prediction model with the help of the Genetic Algorithm-Neural Network (GA-NN) and provides the energy performance level of the building design after the prediction. A case study is carried out to present the overall process and verify the accuracy of the proposed three-stage building energy performance evaluation method. This study contributes to the improvement of both the extensive dataset establishment and the operational efficiency of building energy consumption prediction. It can provide designers with a real-time, user-friendly, and reliable building energy consumption prediction tool and an energy performance assessment basis in the design phase of construction projects.

Abstract:Building performance design is essential to support sustainable urban development. It involves multiple conflicting performance, such as energy consumption and daylighting. These potential conflicts present a challenging issue for architects to get trade-off solutions. This study proposed a multi-criteria decision-making method based on sensitivity analysis and analytic hierarchy process for building performance optimization, which provided architects with a real-time interactive way to handle the building's sustainable design. After inputting the initial scheme and the expected performance goals, architects can modify the scheme according to the variable modification strategy recommended by the method and combine it with their preferences to improve the scheme's performance. Application of the proposed method to a case study of office building design in the China context was achieved. The results showed that the optimal solutions obtained with the help of the proposed method had better performance than those obtained without the method. Architects have also increased their design efficiency by 211.5%. The proposed method promotes the applicability of decision-making methods in building sustainable design and also provides a satisfactory method to support the improvement of building performance and also sustainability for modern cities.

Abstract:Internationally, buildings are a major contributor to carbon emissions. Despite significant advances in the technology and construction of energy-efficient buildings, in many cases a performance gap between designed and actual performance exists. While much research has investigated the drivers of the building energy performance gap – both static and transient– there has been considerably less research into the total performance gap, defined here as performance gaps in building energy use, occupant satisfaction and Indoor Environmental Quality parameters such as thermal comfort and air quality which may impact on occupant health and wellbeing. This paper presents a meta-analysis of building performance data from buildings in the UK and China – selected due to their contrasting development environments – which illustrate the presence of and complexities of evaluating total performance gaps in both countries. The data demonstrate the need for (1) high end-use, spatial granularity and temporal resolution data for both energy and Indoor Environmental Quality, and (2) developing methodologies that allow meaningful comparisons between buildings internationally to facilitate learning from successful building design, construction methodologies and policy environments internationally. Using performance data from a UK building, a potential forward path is illustrated with the objective of developing a framework to evaluate total building performance. Practical application: While much research has examined building energy performance gaps, Indoor Environmental Quality and occupant satisfaction gaps are rarely included despite their relationship to energy. We use a meta-analysis of energy, indoor environmental quality, and occupant satisfaction data from buildings in the UK and China to illustrating the presence of and complexities of evaluating total performance gaps for buildings in the two countries, and the need for high resolution dynamic buildings data and novel methodologies for comparison between buildings across different contexts. Illustrative case studies are used to demonstrate potential future directions for evaluating ‘total’ building performance.

Abstract:Research on how the database method can assist building performance diagnosis has become an important direction of current green building studies. Many research institutions have paid great attention to the building performance database, adopting new technologies to integrate indoor environmental quality and occupant satisfaction with building energy consumption data. This paper introduces and summarizes the data types, collection methods, and applications of current building performance databases, including those in the United States, the European Union, Japan, and Australia, as well as China. In view of the current problems of limited coverage, poor quality, and ineffective application of green buildings in China, this paper proposes a three-dimensional framework for green building performance databases. The collection and optimization methods of green building performance data are also discussed.

Abstract:Within the last two decades, substantial amount of literature on intelligent building has been generated. However, there is a lack of systematic review of existing research efforts and achievements. A comprehensive review on existing research provides great benefits to identify where more efforts are needed and therefore the future research directions. For this purpose, this paper reviews the literature related to the subject area of intelligent building. Our review indicates that previous research efforts have dealt mainly with three research aspects including advanced and innovative intelligent technologies research, performance evaluation methodologies and investment evaluation analysis. It is also identified that among the three research aspects, relatively less literature has been found addressing the issues of investment evaluation of intelligent buildings. Based on a comprehensive literature review, the paper also summarizes a few future research directions, which are useful to researchers working in this important area.

Abstract:Building energy consumption in China recently surpassed the US building consumption, and it is expected to increase significantly in the next decade pushed by the continuous population and urbanization increase. In response to that situation, the Chinese government introduced a series of building energy codes and rating systems to assess and enhance the building energy performance. The purpose of this study is to develop a rating system for the building energy efficiency, based on in situ measurement. The system is intended for office buildings in China's cold zone. An evaluation framework, graphic dominant point, and principle of data collection and processing are illustrated in this paper. Three existing buildings were rated under the new rating system. The authors believe that the new system will contribute to a more accurate and comprehensive understanding for asset holders and occupants, that report on the extent to which energy efficiency buildings have been reached. Rating results are expected to be a reference for the retrofitting of existing buildings and the design of new buildings. In addition, the outlook for the rating system was also discussed.

Abstract:The present research showcases the Indoor Energy-Saving Optimization Design of green buildings. This integrated approach synergizes a building's Indoor Energy-Saving process based on the intelligent GANN-BIM model. The GANN-BIM model is driven by genetic algorithms (GAs), which include artificial neural networks (ANNs) along with building information models (BIMs). Building information modeling (BIM) is a technology that involves the modeling and management of digital representation of all forms of structural buildings. These intelligent models can be exchanged and extracted in the form of files and are mainly used for the designing and decision-making of a building. The BIM model is empowered as an intelligent technology by incorporating artificial neural networks (ANNs) and genetic algorithms (GAs). The main objective of the research is Indoor Energy-Saving by implementing an optimized design of green buildings. Green buildings can benefit from the GANN-BIM model's ability to handle complex and conflicting design requirements while using less computational power during the evaluation of the proposed approach. There are a variety of new green building technologies being developed, but they all share a common goal: to reduce human health and environmental impact by maximizing energy, water, and other resource efficiencies; protecting occupant health; reducing waste; and decreasing pollution. The empirical results of GANN-BIM proved that the proposed model outperforms well in enhancing energy evaluation.

Abstract:<p>Three main groups of internal and external influencing factors have been identified through this review, including building characteristics, equipment and technologies, and occupant's behaviors. The consideration of only building characteristics cannot guarantee the best energy design of a building, as it could be dependent on the other two groups of factors. Under some circumstances, some of the energy efficiency design solutions did not consider economic or environmental benefits. A wide range of advanced technologies is available for building designers, while challenges still exist from a cost-effectiveness perspective. Many numerical results are hard to validate and confirm the feasibility of those real projects. Comparatively, occupant behavior interventions provide an alternative solution for building users to improve energy efficiency with a relatively low cost and unsophisticated construction procedures. According to those reviewed studies, the ranges of energy-saving are 10-28% and 43-71% through the smart control of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and the lighting systems, respectively. The trends of key influencing factors on energy efficiency design have slightly changed over the past few decades. The influencing factors had been mainly investigated in the optimization design and technological updates of buildings previously but now have incorporated the building management of occupant behaviour. Few studies have been carried out to integrate the occupant behavior model into the current energy simulation software. Thus, two research directions can be concluded after this review. Building efficiency design needs to be conducted from a systematic view to figure out the underlying issues among different efficient design measures. Energy performance benchmarking of both occupant behavior interventions and the technological updates and building service systems are urgently needed as a guided reference to help the building users to make smart decisions.</p>

Abstract:A comprehensive assessment index system including bearing, maintenance, decoration and fitment, water supply and drainage, heating ventilating and air conditioning （HVAC） , and electrical sub-systems, is developed in this paper by improving the anyalytieal hierarchy process （AHP） method. Qualitative or quantitative evaluation standard and grade are set for every index in the system, and a corresponding evaluation model is constructed to implement fuzzy quantitative evaluation from the subsystem to the intergrated for office buildings. Finanlly, the comprehensive assessment index system and the fuzzy assessment method are demonstrated by engineering practice.

Abstract:The rapid development of green buildings world widely has not delivered the anticipated energy related benefits because the real performance of green buildings is not as good as expected. This paper presents a building case study in China by applying a holistic approach which integrates system dynamics and energy performance simulation to evaluate the building performance gap and provide management strategies to minimize the performance gap. The case study in this paper is an office building located in Shanghai, which was awarded “Three Star” in Evaluation Standard for Green Buildings in China (GB/T 50378–2006). Several scenarios including six single management strategy scenarios and four multiple management strategy scenarios are carried out and in each scenario, building performance is analyzed qualitatively in terms of project quality (ranging from 0 to 1), and quantitatively in terms of energy use intensity (kWh/m2). The results of this case study are compared to another green office building located in the UK. The cross case mismatch between qualitative and quantitative results is due to four factors that performed better in reality that they were designed. It is demonstrated that multiple factors could help to increase building performance more than single factor especially when management cost was considered. The comparison of the two cases in China and the UK, shows that design factors should be treated in a more stringent way instead of referring values from local standard authorities only which could induce overdesign of the buildings.

Abstract:With the acceleration of urbanization process in China, the usage of sustainable green buildings is getting a great attention and significance in order to reduce energy consumption. However, there are still challenges for evaluating the performance of green buildings in China due to the lack of unified codes/standards. This paper proposes a method based on cloud model to evaluate the performance of green buildings. This method overcomes the randomness and subjectivity of fuzzy concepts to the maximum extent; on this basis, the system’s indexes including environmental–economic balance, regional social coordination, health, comfort, and green management can be established. The analytic hierarchy process and entropy weight methods are used to calculate the index weight; the cloud model is used to realize the transformation between qualitative and quantitative characteristics; and then, a mathematical evaluation model based on the cloud model is established. Finally, an empirical study is made based on a typical case in Shenzhen city, China. The findings of this research work reveal a performance index for green building created based on expert evaluations and a standard cloud yardstick created in the comprehensive cloud model. Based on the results of this manuscript, the industry can acquire benefits by suggesting effective measures that can be implemented in all stages of green buildings construction where the measurements execution and persuasive components make appraisal models for a green building. This study provides a consistent framework for researchers and other public to evaluate green buildings, and provides a solid foundation for further research and consideration basis on sustainable development and green building operation.

Abstract:A green building is a structure that avoids or eliminates negative environmental impacts and generates environmental benefits through its design, construction, or functioning. The use of ecologically friendly building materials increases the quality of life. The overuse of electronic equipment hinders the achievement of the overall green aim, even if smart buildings are a beneficial stimulus for sustainability. Demand-side management and green building energy consumption prediction are connected and depend on accurate estimates of how much energy a facility will need. While several approaches have been offered for predicting energy use, each method has advantages and disadvantages, and there is always room for improvement. This paper suggests the Artificial Intelligence-based Energy Management Model (AI-EMM) in green building. Adaptable to human choices, it can act intelligently to increase user comfort, safety, and energy efficiency. One of the key components of the AI-EMM model is a universal infrared communication system and subsystems for smart user identification and monitoring of the internal and exterior surroundings. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models are used to enhance energy consumption. A green building's energy usage data is analysed using the suggested approach. For a better interior climate, studies examining the relationship between Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system should focus on airside design optimization. According to the findings, economic gains and environmentally sustainable building coexist harmoniously. A green or sustainable building is one whose structure and characteristics preserve or enhance the local environment. The experimental outcome of the AI-EMM achieved a high-performance ratio of 94.3%, less energy consumption ratio of 15.7%, accuracy ratio of 97.4%, energy management level of 95.7%, and prediction ratio of 97.1%.

Abstract:Traditional buildings will lead to a series of problems such as high energy consumption, high pollution, and serious waste of resources and environmental damage. It is of great significance to construct a green building evaluation system based on the physical building framework to achieve energy saving and consumption reduction and to fit the sustainable development. In this study, a building greenness evaluation system combining BIM data model and prior knowledge of experts is constructed and the applicability of the method has been verified. IFC information is expressed and transmitted in terms of components, materials, equipment, environmental quality impact, etc., and BIM based building performance design data information conversion and greenness evaluation process is constructed; Based on the comparison and of the existing green building evaluation systems at home and abroad, the evaluation model of building greenness is determined; Based on the ideas and steps of establishing the index system proposed in the research, the index system of building greenness evaluation is established from the aspects of environmental quality (Q) and building load (L) on the basis of questionnaire, prior knowledge of experts and other methods; Combined with the mathematical model of greenness evaluation, the paper analyzes the indexes of different levels, determines the structural calculation methods of different indexes, and carries on the quantitative classification of the overall greenness evaluation. Finally, taking a citizen's house as an engineering case, the paper makes an empirical analysis on the greenness evaluation of green buildings. The results show that the green degree of the building is excellent(class A), which is consistent with the project positioning, and provides the basis for the efficient and accurate evaluation of green building.

Abstract:This paper aims to evaluate and analyze the application effect of intelligent construction technology in the process of building construction because of the complexity and uncertainty of the technology itself. It also aims to promote the digital application of intelligent construction technologies throughout the life cycle of building construction and sustainable construction. Combining questionnaires and the Delphi, an indicator system for the evaluation of the application effect of intelligent construction technology was constructed, which contained twenty indicators, and then a cloud matter-element model was subsequently established by combining the cloud model with the matter element theory and took a practical engineering project as an example, so as to determine the application effect level of the technology. Results show that the evaluation grade of the effectiveness of the application of intelligent construction technology in this project is three-star and the application of intelligent construction technology in the construction phase is average, but there is a trend towards good development. The evaluation of the application effect of intelligent construction technology provides a direction for the specific application of new construction technology and promotes the transformation and upgrading of the construction industry and sustainable development.

Abstract:This paper compares the western countries' performance evaluation theory of EVA, KPI,BSC and TPP with the current performance evaluation system in our country, and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of the evaluation system in China and foreign countries.On the basis of all the evaluation methods,the authors set up the theoretical model and mathematical model of integrated performance evaluation based on enterprise strategy.The index system has 3 layers,5 dimensions and 26 indices.Taking the high-tech enterprise as an example,the application of the model is discussed and the final conclusion is drawn.

Abstract:Passive design has been widely identified as one of the most economical and effective strategies for sustainable building. The use of “animate” building space is one significant passive strategy in architectural design. It has two properties -organic and dynamic–and its type includes such as atriums, courtyards, wind towers, light wells, patios, sunspaces, etc. This study introduces a logical, scientific method of assessing building space performance. A multi-criteria approach was developed to validate and optimize the influence of animate spaces on sustainable buildings, with an emphasis on their influence on building environment quality and occupant satisfaction. Considering both the relationship between the building and people, and the building and the environment, and focusing primarily on of building design and building environment control, this research introduces an evaluation tool called SCTool. SCTool includes compasses that measure occupant satisfaction and indoor physical environment performance, and a Satisfaction–Comfort matrix that evaluates the fluctuating performances of animate spaces and the building's overall sustainable performance in building operating phase. This research chose atrium to represent one of typical animate spaces, and adopted a pair-group analysis method to isolate and analyze a single variable. Four typical atriums were chosen and divided into two categories: 3-direction atriums and high rise building atriums. Each test group of buildings included one green building and one conventional building. The results indicate the level of environmental performance of each object building, and highlight optimized possibilities for the atrium and the entire building in both the design and renovation phases.
