Abstract:Abstract In view of the problem of gas safety in fully mechanized caving face under complex geological conditions, taking high-level borehole gas extraction as the main gas control means to improve the extraction effect and ensure gas safety during mining, this paper takes 131301 fully mechanized caving face of Xinji No. 1 Coal Mine of Zhongmei as an example to study and analyze the layout of high-level borehole. Through the actual measurement, the gas concentration in the upper corner retaining wall is basically controlled below 0.2%, and in the return air lane is controlled below 0.08%, which shows that this method has achieved good gas drainage effect and ensured gas safety during mining.
A Case Study of Gas Drainage to Low Permeability Coal Seam

Abstract:Gas drainage at low gas permeability coal seam is a main barrier affecting safety and efficient production in coal mines. Therefore, the research and application of drainage technology at low permeability coal seam is a key factor for gas control of coal mine. In order to improve the drainage effect, this paper establishes a three-dimensional solid-gas-liquid coupling numerical model, and the gas drainage amounts of different schemes are examined inside the overburden material around the goaf. The Yangquan mine area is selected for the case study, and the gas movement regularity and emission characteristics are analyzed in detail, as well as the stress and fissure variation regularity. Also examinations are the released gas movement, enrichment range and movement regularity during coal extraction. Moreover, the gas drainage technology and drainage parameters for the current coal seam are studied. After measuring the gas drainage flow in-situ, it is concluded that the technology can achieve notable drainage results, with gas drainage rate increase by 30%–40% in a low permeability coal seam.
Study on Parameters of Gas Extraction in Spontaneous Combustion in Goaf and Comprehensive Prevention Process of Gas in Hongmiao Mine

Abstract:Aimed at the comprehensive management of gas and spontaneous combustion in goaf of 5-2S fully mechanized caving face in five district of Hongmiao coal mine. The impacts on the air flow field and concentration distribution of the goaf are analyzed, that the changes of gas drainage value, and the location of drainage outlet as well as injection capacity of nitrogen. The results show that, the larger of the volume of gas drainage, the greater risk of gas explosion and spontaneous combustion. Appropriate increasing gas drainage volume is used to ensure the safety of the working face, with injecting nitrogen or accelerating the speed of face promote. The drainage outlet location should also be in an appropriate range (5~25 m) after the break line of the face. The result has important guiding significance in goaf of inflammable thick seam of gas mine, on the selection of gas extraction parameters, which is reasonable to prevent both gas explosion accident and spontaneous combustion caused by drainage excessive.
Collaborative gas drainage technology of high and low level roadways in highly-gassy coal seam mining

Abstract:China's coal resources are gradually being mined deeper. The gas content and emissions of deep coal seams increase significantly compared to shallow seams. In the mining of the highly-gassy coal seams, strengthening gas drainage in the goaf and fissure zone can improve the efficiency of coal seams and reduce carbon emissions. However, the method of the borehole or high level roadway often cannot meet the demand of goaf and fracture zone gas drainage. Thus, a new technology of gas drainage in goaf and fracture zone is proposed: cooperative gas drainage via high and low level roadways. Taking the Pingshu coal mine as an example, the gas flow field model of the goaf was established. Fluent software was used to analyze and simulate different gas drainage effects of high and low level roadways under different layers and negative pressure conditions, and to optimize the process parameters of high and low level roadways. The results show that the collaborative drainage effect of high and low level roadways is much better when the horizontal and vertical distances of high level roadway are 32 m and 30 m, the horizontal distance of low level roadway is 5 m, and the negative drainage pressure of both roadways is 15 kPa. The gas concentration in the upper corner can be effectively reduced under the condition. On the basis of the optimized parameters, the collaborative gas drainage of high and low level roadways was applied and effectively solved the problems of gas accumulation and overrun in the upper corner of the working face, where the gas concentration was less than 0.45%. The paper provides a new approach for gas drainage in the highly-gassy coal seams.

Abstract:In order to address the challenges of high gas outburst in both the adjacent layers and the coal seam itself faced by large mining faces, a study on the three-dimensional extraction of gas from different sources at a large mining face was conducted. Based on the research on the instability and failure characteristics of the overlying strata during mining and the gas outburst characteristics at the large mining face, a source-separated three-dimensional gas extraction system was established. A comprehensive gas management model for the large mining face, involving the extraction of gas from different sources, has been proposed. This model is suitable for gas management at large mining faces where there is a high gas emission in the adjacent layers and a complex structure of the coal seam. Through numerical simulations using FLAC3D, the height of the "three zones" of the overlying strata and the range of the floor fracture zone at the large mining face were obtained, providing guidance for the layout of high-level drainage roadway, low-level drainage roadway, and floor drainage roadways. Following the coordinated layout of high-level drainage roadway, inclined high-level drainage roadway, and low-level drainage roadway, the reasonable optimization of gas extraction techniques in the coal seam, and the reasonable arrangement of floor rock predrainage roadways, the methane capture efficiency of the large 15115 mining face reached 87.5%. The methane concentrations at the upper corner and in the return airflow being below 0.8%. The methane concentration extracted from the coal seam boreholes is 2.9 times higher than that from the ordinary mining face after adopting "ordinary boreholes + large-diameter boreholes". This gas management model effectively addresses the gas-related challenges of the large mining face and improves the gas extraction rate, achieving harmonious mining and extraction of coal and methane.
Prevention Technology of Coal Spontaneous Combustion Induced by Gas Drainage in Deep Coal Seam Mining

Abstract:Due to high gas content and a low permeability coefficient in deep coal seam mining, the spontaneous combustion of coal around the wellbore can easily occur, leading to difficulties in extracting gas during the mining process. To determine the dangerous area around the borehole and conduct advanced prevention and control measures are the keys to preventing spontaneous combustion in boreholes. However, the dangerous area around the borehole is not clear, the sealing parameters lack scientific basis, and the key prevention and control measures are not clear, which have caused great harm to coal mines. This study took the 24,130 working face of Pingdingshan No. 10 Mine as an example, using numerical simulation, theoretical analysis, and field tests to classify the risks of studying the surrounding area of the wellbore. The dangerous area variations under different lengths of shotcrete in the roadway were analyzed, the optimal plugging parameters were studied, and the current “two plugs and one injection” plugging device was optimized. Based on the oxygen concentration and air leakage rate, a method was proposed to divide the dangerous area of fissure coal spontaneous combustion around the borehole induced by gas extraction. The dangerous area of spontaneous combustion around the borehole was defined as having an oxygen concentration larger than 7% and an air leakage rate less than 0.004 m/s. The comprehensive control measures of the grouting length at 2–4 m, hole-sealing parameter at 20-13 (hole-sealing depth 20 m, hole-sealing length 13 m) and the “two plugs, one injection and one row” device were determined.
Disastrous Mechanism and Concentration Distribution of Gas Migration in Fully Mechanized Caving Stope in Wuyang Coal Mine

Abstract:The overrunning disaster of harmful gas tends to occur in the working face in thick coal seam with high gas concentration, as the fully mechanized caving stope has the characteristics of high mining intensity, high remnant coal, and high gas content. Therefore, the disastrous mechanism and concentration distribution of gas migration in fully mechanized caving stope are the theoretical basis for gas control scheme. Based on the 7607 working face in Wuyang coal mine, the gas emission quantity in working face is comprehensively analyzed by field measurement in this paper. The gas leakage field, oxygen concentration field, and gas concentration field in 7607 working face are simulated by establishing the equal proportional numerical model. Due to the increase of air leakage in working face caused by the high alley pumping drainage, the risk of coal spontaneous combustion is also analyzed, when gas extraction in goaf is carried out. The research results show that the gas drainage technology in high drainage roadway has a remarkable effect on the gas overrunning phenomenon. The gas concentration near the upper corner of the working surface has been reduced from 0.7%-1% to 0.5%. At the same time, it is necessary to pay attention to the risk of coal spontaneous combustion in the goaf for gas drainage in the high drainage roadway. The width of the oxidation zone in the goaf is about 25 m deeper than that before the drainage. Research results provide the references for gas control technology and coal spontaneous combustion prevention in similar working faces.

Abstract:C 13 coal seam of Pansan mine of Huainan Mining Group Corp. has the property of low permeability and high gas-containing and easy to spontaneous combustion. In order to realize safe mining by fully mechanized top-coal caving technology, the comprehensive control measures, gas drainage with strike long horizontal holes in stress-relief roof, gas drainage with bedding bores by using the mining stress-relief characteristic, gas drainage and discharge by tail airway, pressure-equalizing adjust of working face ventilation system timely, distributing air flow volume of working face reasonably, controlling air leakage in gob area and so on, had been implemented based on the affecting factors analyses of gas and coal spontaneous combustion control. By means of above measures, the gas problems in mining of fully mechanized top-coal caving working face had been settled and coal spontaneous combustion in gob area had been effectively controlled. Therefore, the mining movement velocity of the working face had been evaluated obviously. The experimental results showed that gas drainage with strike long horizontal holes in stress-relief roof was proved to be effective in settling the low gas drainage rate of coal seams with low permeability. The gas drainage rate was over 30%, and gas drainage and discharge by tail airway was an effective assistant measure, which had some effect on coal spontaneous combustion in the gob area. The key factors were the mixed flow passing the gob area. The results might provide an important reference for mining safety to other analogical mechanized top-coal caving coal seams which have high gas content and are prone to spontaneous combustion.
Research and application of high-pressure water jets drilling and repairing failure drainage borehole for enhancing coalbed methane recovery in underground coal mines

Abstract:Draining gas from coal seams in underground coal mines is the main method of the coalbed methane exploitation in China. When the gas drainage boreholes are located at soft, fractured coal rock seams, phenomena such as borehole collapse and blockage occur frequently, resulting in the significant decrease of gas drainage efficiency. To recover the gas drainage effect of failure boreholes, this study proposed a drilling and repairing failure drainage borehole technique by utilizing high-velocity water jets to break blockage to dredge borehole. The technical principles and key equipment compositions were described, including water jets breaking rock and discharging debris, high-pressure pipeline transport and recovery, hydraulic parameters adjustment and operation control. Based on the jet velocity distribution laws, rock breakage criterions under dynamic loading and debris movement laws in borehole, the critical pressure and flow of water jet for breaking coal rock and discharging debris during drilling were calculated. And the limit drilling and borehole-dredging length model was established. The field applications indicate that the drilling velocity in coal seams varied from 0.42 m/min to 0.76 m/min with a maximum drilling length of 43.5 m under the field conditions. Increasing the drilling angle within a certain range could improve the drilling efficiency due to the smoother debris discharge. Moreover, after the blockages in boreholes were removed, the gas drainage concentrations of all boreholes increased by 33–85%, and the average gas drainage flow of single borehole maintained 99.3 m 3 /d, increasing by 83.5 m 3 /d. Thus, the proposed technique has a good drilling performance and can significantly improve the gas drainage efficiency of the blocked failure boreholes.

Abstract:Although gas drainage technology has greatly developed, gas concentration and utilization rates are still very low, resulting in substantial quantities of low concentration gas emissions in coal mine. To study the roles of suction pressure on gas drainage, a mathematical model is developed in this study for coupled gas migration and coal deformation based on a dual-porosity medium. The simulation results reveal the initial gas production is mainly contributed by the seepage in the fracture, and then the dominating factor rapidly transitions to diffusion which provides relatively stable gas production in most drainage time. In addition, the increase in gas production is tiny while the gas concentration clearly decreases because of air leakage as the suction pressure increases. Therefore, a concentration-based suction pressure regulating method is proposed to extend the time period of effective gas drainage and increase the gas utilization rate through adjusting the suction pressure of the bedding borehole. Field tests were performed to constrain the gas drainage process under different suction pressures, and the results gained verify the effectiveness and applicability of this method. This study proves that the concentration-based suction pressure regulating method may be a promising technology to realize safe, economical and efficient underground gas drainage in coal mines in the future.

Improvement of Gas Drainage Efficiency of Low-Permeability Coal Seams Using Ultra-High Pressure Hydraulic Cutting Technique

Abstract:With the increase in the coal mining depth, the dynamic disasters of deep coal seam under the combined effects of high crustrals stress and high gas pressure seriously restrict the safety production of the coal mines. Moreover, it is very difficult to lower the gas content of the low-permeability coal seams. Even though numerous boreholes have been drilled inside the coal seam and gas drainage have been performed for a long period. High-pressure water jet cutting technology can effectively increase the exposure area of coal seams, improve the gas flow state in coal seams, so that the coal can be evenly and fully discharged in a certain range, and then the goal of rapid discharge and permeability enhancement can be achieved. After cutting the coal seam between 1m and 2m interval, a uniform pressure relief space is formed inside the boreholes to increase the permeability of the coal seam and improve the gas drainage efficiency The field test results shows that the equivalent diameter of boreholes with cutting is about 5 times that of boreholes without cutting. The gas drainage radius of boreholes with cutting is 2.8 times that of boreholes without cutting, which significantiy shortens the gas drainage time of the coal lane strip, and then attributes to relizing the rapid and safe excavation of coal seam roadway. This technique can provide reference significance for the modification of low-permeabilety coal seans in the similar condition area.

Abstract:Gas disasters, such as coal and gas outburst and gas overflow, always occur during the mining of the steep and extra-thick coal seam in the horizontal, fully mechanized, top coal slice caving (HFMTCSC) method. To solve these issues and guarantee the safe and efficient mining in the Yaojie No. 3 coal mine, 3DEC software was used in this work to investigate the overburden movement and collapse law as well as the stress redistribution and coal-seam deformation characteristics below the goaf. The results show that a pressure arch structure and a hinge structure are formed in succession in the overburden rock, which induces stress redistribution in the coal below the goaf. During the mining of the upper slice, more than 75% of the coal in the lower slice is located at the effective pressure relief zone; therefore, the steep and extra-thick coal seam can then be protected slice by slice. Meanwhile, with the increase of mining depth, the efficient pressure relief range expands. Based on this pressure relief mechanism, crossing boreholes and bedding boreholes were reasonably designed to efficiently extract the pressure relief gas during the mining of the steep and extra-thick coal seam in the Yaojie No. 3 coal mine.

Abstract:Owing to the exhaustion of shallow coal resources, deep mining has been occupied in coal mines. Deep buried coal seams are featured by the great ground stress, high gas pressure, and low permeability, which boost the risk of gas disasters and thus dramatically threaten the security about coal mines. Coal seam gas pressure and gas content can be decreased by gas extraction, which is the primary measure to prevent and control mine gas disasters. The coal mass is simplified into a continuous medium with dual structure of pores and fractures and single permeability. In consideration of the combined effects of gas slippage and two-phase flow, a hydraulic-mechanical coupling model for gas migration in coals is proposed. This model involves the equations of gas sorption and diffusion, gas and water seepage, coal deformation, and evolution of porosity and permeability. Based on these, the procedure of gas extraction through the floor roadway combined with hydraulic punching and ordinary drainage holes was simulated, and the gas extraction results were used to evaluate the outburst danger of roadway excavation and to verify the engineering practice. Results show that gas extraction can reduce coal seam gas pressure and slow down the rate of gas release, and the established hydraulic-mechanical coupling model can accurately reveal the law of gas extraction by drilling and punching boreholes. After adopting the gas extraction technology of drilling and hydraulic punching from the floor roadway, the remaining gas pressure and gas content are reduced to lower than 0.5 MPa and 5.68 m3/t, respectively. The achievements set a theoretical foundation to the application of drilling and punching integrated technology to enhance gas extraction.

Abstract:Engineering principle: the gas permeability of the coal seam is enhanced by excavating the underlying roadway for local destressing. Subsequently, gas drainage is executed through cross‐layer drilling to lower the gas pressure and content in the excavation area to meet safety permit requirements. Consequently, eliminating the hazards of gas outbursts during coal mining is beneficial for the safe and efficient excavation of coal seam roadway. Gas outbursts pose a significant threat in the mining of deep low‐permeability coal seams. As mining depth increases, there is a rise in coal and gas dynamic disasters, rendering the gas outburst prevention technology from shallow mining areas unsuitable for deep coal seam exploitation. Addressing the challenges posed by deep, highly gassy coal seams, this study introduces a gas outburst prevention technology integrating destressing in the close distance underlying roadway with gas drainage. The article investigates the relevant technical parameters and assesses the feasibility of this approach. First, it establishes destressing model for the underlying roadway to derive an analytical solution for stress distribution in the coal seam. Second, appropriate technical parameters are designed considering the seepage characteristics of gas in the coal seam. Finally, the gas drainage technical scheme is implemented at Qujiang coal mine to verify its on‐site effectiveness. Field test results indicate an increase in gas permeability within the coal seam following destressing in the underlying roadway, accompanied by significant improvements in the efficiency of gas drainage and the advancement speed of the coal roadway. Specifically, the driving speed of the coal roadway has escalated from 40 m/month to 150 m/month. These outcomes demonstrate the potential of this technology as a promising approach for preventing gas outbursts in the challenging context of deep, low‐permeability coal seams, facilitating swift coal roadway excavation.

Abstract:The generalization and application of fully mechanized caving with super great mining height (SGMH) face a series of new issues, of which strata pressure behavior and abnormal gas emissions are the most prominent disasters and display a close relationship. The Tashan coalmine was chosen as the experiment base because of its SGMH and the overlying hard and thick main roof (HTMR). This coalmine had experienced many damaging hydraulic support and abnormal gas emission accidents induced by strata pressure behavior. The “Key Strata Theory” and the fracture failure process analysis model established by 3DEC were used to analyze the structural characteristics and fracture failure process of the HTMR. The geostress reduction and permeability enhancement redistribution of the adjacent coal measure strata were studied by the geostress and permeability distribution model established by FLAC 3D. The HTMR controlled the failure extent and the movement evolution of the entire overburden stratum. The HTMR acted as a large double-sided embedded rock beam during primary fracturing and a cantilever-articulated rock beam during periodic fracturing, and it generated a huge hanging space above the gob. The fully mechanized caving with SGMH caused large-scale disturbances and permeability enhancements in the adjacent rock and coal strata. Then, the substantial amounts of gas stored in the remaining coal, surrounding rock strata and adjacent coal seam rushed out and aggregated in the caved and fissured zones of the gob, forming a huge gas warehouse. The strata pressure behavior and abnormal gas emission disasters primarily occurred after the primary and periodic fracturing of the HTMR. These disasters are predominantly caused by the escaping of the abundant gas that existed in the gob during mine pressure behavior processes. When the ultimate broken span was reached, as the HTMR rotated and collapsed, the substantial amounts of gas that accumulated in the gob escaped into the working face, which easily caused abnormal gas emissions. Hydraulic presplitting and gas drainage technologies are proposed to solve these disasters.

Abstract:Abstract The prevention of gas overrun in the panel is one of the key issues on green mining. In this paper, a physical goaf model was established based on the geological production conditions of a coal seam in a coal mine in Henan Province, and the combined drainage technology by burying and spilling pipeline in the upper corner was proposed. The Fluent software was used to simulate the changes of gas mass fraction and flow field distribution when the gas is extracted from the goaf without the gas pipeline, with a single buried pipeline, and with the combination of buried and spilled pipelines. Analysis and simulation showed that in the absence of drainage pipelines, the gas concentrations in both the return airway and the upper corner are up to 1.2%, which failed to meet the gas prevention and control standard on the mine. In the case of gas drainage with a single buried pipeline, the average gas concentration in the return airway was 0.7%, and only the gas concentration in the upper corner was up to 1.1%, which failed to meet the gas control standards on the mine’s panel. However, the maximum gas concentration in the combined drainage was reduced from 1.1% to 0.6%, which indicates that the technology can greatly reduce gas concentration, but there is still a gap from the mine’s gas control standard. Therefore, the impacts of the lengths of pipelines buried in different goafs on the gas drainage effect in the goaf were studied, and it was concluded that the reasonable length of pipelines buried in the goaf under the geological conditions was 20 m. This technology not only solves the problem of gas overrun in the panel but also realizes the utilization of gas resources in the goaf. The research results are of guiding significance for pipeline laying and the drainage technology in the upper corners on the U-shaped ventilation panel.

Abstract:China is the country suffering the most serious coal and gas outburst disasters in the world. Gas drainage in a single low-permeability coal seam cannot be conducted without the assistance of permeability enhancement measures, because such a coal seam fails to provide the conditions for protective seam mining. The hydraulic flushing cavity technology is competent to crush coal and release gas in high-gas low-permeability coal seams. However, the mechanism of pressure relief and permeability enhancement by the technology is rarely reported. In this paper, the coupling model of high-pressure water jet coal flushing and crushing was established, and the damage evolution of coal body under the impact of high-pressure water jet was deduced. Moreover, the current flushing cavity drilling rig and hydraulic flushing equipment still have shortcomings. In the hope of overcoming these shortcomings, the crawler drilling and flushing integrated equipment was developed for underground coal mines. On this basis, the technology of pressure relief and permeability enhancement by hydraulic flushing cavities in the floor rock roadway were proposed. According to the numerical simulation results of large-area pressure relief and permeability enhancement, it is concluded that the layout of the cavities can be adjusted to alleviate the stress concentration between cavities. Furthermore, the technology was applied to the 3# coal seam of Xinjing Coal Mine. The field test results show that after the application of the technology, the average drainage concentration for a single borehole is increased by 4.8 times, and the scalar drainage amount for a single borehole is increased by 16 times. Meanwhile, the permeability enhancement effect is improved significantly. The research results are expected to help control outburst disasters and ensure safe production in soft coal seams with low-permeability and gas outburst hazard.

Abstract:When mining high-rank coals with strong adsorption and weak desorption, the fully mechanized mining face of a thick coal seam under full-seam mining may encounter broken coal, surrounding rock and instantaneous release of large amounts of gas into the mining space from adjacent coal seams due to mining stress relief, which is extremely likely to cause gas overrun accidents at the working face. At present, the major gas control method adopted to solve this problem is the directional drainage of the fractured zone in the mining area through a roof extraction roadway (RER). However, the drainage effect is closely related to its horizontal distance from the return airway and its vertical distance from the coal seam roof. Based on the analysis of fracture characteristics in different areas of the overlying strata above the gob, this paper elaborates the extraction mechanism of RER, and employs three methods: RER at different positions, directional long borehole on roof (RDLB) at different horizontal and vertical positions, and numerical simulation of the stress release effect of the overlying rock, to investigate the gas drainage effect in mining area. A method to determine the best drainage location in the gob based on the stress release ratio of the overlying rock is proposed. The results show that either RERs or RDLBs work to conduct directional drainage in the mining area; the best position is 25 m from the return airway of the mining face horizontally and 50–55 m from the coal seam roof vertically. The research methods provide insight for later studies concerning highly gassy mines and coal and gas outburst mines. Moreover, the research results serve as guidance for other mines with similar mining conditions.

Abstract:Soft coal seams are characterized by high gas content, high tectonic stress, low strength, and low permeability; thus, gas extraction from soft coal seams is rather difficult, and outburst accidents commonly occur in their driving face. To enhance gas extraction and thus prevent outburst disasters, a novel in-seam borehole discontinuous hydraulic flushing (ISBDHF) technology was proposed in this work. By adopting a multiphysical coupling model and a new FLAC3D and COMSOL Multiphysics combined numerical solving method, we first analyzed the enhanced gas extraction mechanism of hydraulic flushing using the numerical simulation method. After that, this new technology was applied in the Xinjing coal mine, and its application results were systematically investigated. The numerical simulation results showed that the generation of new fractures in the plastic failure zone caused by hydraulic flushing could not only increase the coal permeability by 2–3 orders of magnitude, but also decrease its gas sorption time from 1 day to several minutes due to the decrease in matrix size. Therefore, hydraulic flushing enhances gas extraction by the combined effect of increasing permeability and increasing diffusion. Moreover, nearby flushing cavities may interact with each other under multicavity conditions, further improving the permeability-increasing and diffusion-increasing effects. After adopting ISBDHF technology in the Xinjing coal mine, the borehole number and gas extraction period in the driving face decreased by 73.5 and 77.8%, respectively, while the gas extraction rate increased from 28.20 to 34.35%, which improved the coal roadway excavation speed by 1.37 times.
