Recent advances on molecular systematics

Abstract:Traditionally, molecular systematics is divided into phylogenetics, which is focused on biological relationships above the species level, and population genetics, which is focused on biological relationships below the species level. In recent years, with the rapid developments of experimental technology and computer's operational ability, some new analysis methods and theories, such as phylogenomics, phylogeographics, DNA taxonomy, DNA barcoding, MOTU, and ESU, were developed, and meanwhile, some new advances also appeared within traditional phylogenetics and population genetics. Herein, we provided a brief introduction to these analysis methods and theories of molecular systematics, and subsequently overviewes of the recent advances on these research fi elds were given. Additionally, the research tendency of molecular systematics was discussed.
