Abstract:The adsorption and reaction of N 2 on oxygen modified Mo(100) surface have been investigated by high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). It was found that nitrogen was adsorbed at 120 K with two different configurations (γ and α state). The γ N 2 exhibited a N—N stretching vibration at 2?150 cm -1 , and was chemisorbed on the top sites with its molecular axis perpendicular to the surface. While the α N 2 was located in the side on sites with a N—N stretching vibration at 1?600 cm -1 . Warming the surface to 250 K, the γ N 2 was desorbed at 155 K and the α N 2 was dissociated to form chemisorbed N atoms on the surface. It was also found that the desorption of γ N 2 followed first order kinetics. The chemisorbed N atoms located in the four fold hollows on Mo(100) surface and were recombined into N 2 molecules to leave the surface at above 1?150 K. LEED result demonstrated that the adsorption of N 2 at 120 K was in disorder. However, after heating the Mo(100) surface saturated by N 2 up to 1?100 K, an ordered overlayer c(2×2) N formed.
