Abstract:In the intelligent teaching environment empowered by information technology, the methods and approaches for course examinations have become increasingly diverse, with a greater emphasis on assessing the learning process and linking it to final exams. Computer-assisted testing, as a new examination system, has gained attention and recognition from educators. It has reformed traditional teaching models to a certain extent, liberating teachers from repetitive and labor-intensive teaching activities while improving the overall teaching quality. Taking the application of the iTEST paperless testing system in English Listening course as an example, this study establishes a testing template and evaluates the role of the iTEST system in teaching. The research methods used in this study include quantitative and qualitative research methods, such as interviews and statistical analysis. By collecting feedback from students and teachers who have used the iTEST system, the study aims to understand the advantages and limitations of the iTEST system as perceived by teachers. Through statistical analysis, the study evaluates the examination results of the iTEST system and compares them with those of traditional paper-based tests. The results indicate that the iTEST paperless testing system can effectively enhance the teaching outcomes of English Listening courses, providing students and teachers with a more flexible, efficient, and accurate testing experience.

Abstract:The rapid development of information technology has accelerated the process of educational informatization, the level of which has also been significantly elevated. New teaching informatization modes, such as mobile terminal and online learning, can meet learners’ trans-time-and-space and personalized learning needs. As the main form of teaching evaluation, formative evaluation can provide students with timely and efficient feedback, change teachers’ teaching progress, effectively improve the teaching effect and students’ learning effect, and comprehensively promote students’ autonomous learning ability. In this study, undergraduate students majoring in English for Science and Technology (EST) in five universities of science and engineering in Xi'an city of China, were chosen as research object to explore the influence of formative evaluation (self-evaluation, peer review, and teacher evaluation) on students’ autonomous learning ability in online learning. Thereafter, the moderating effect of self-efficacy on the influence of formative evaluation on students’ autonomous learning ability was analyzed. Results showed that the Cronbach’s α coefficient value of the questionnaire designed in this study was 0.852 and the KMO value was 0.831, indicating its excellent reliability and validity. Evidently, self-evaluation and teacher evaluation can promote the improvement of autonomous learning ability. Self-efficacy plays a moderating role in the promoting effect of formative evaluation on autonomous learning ability. The effect of formative evaluation on autonomous learning ability varies significantly with its frequency of use. Conclusions in this study are of significant reference values for improving the teaching quality of EST through formative evaluation, enhancing the enthusiasm and motivation of college students, and improving the online classroom evaluation system.

Abstract:With the continuous deepening of the modern information society and the gradual improvement of campus network construction, online teaching has been accepted by more and more people, and various online English education platforms have also emerged. Online English academies or English training institutions have begun to develop English courses suitable for different devices, and students can use them to learn English anytime, anywhere. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop and implement an online English teaching platform based on modern information technology. The purpose of this article is the development and application of an online English education platform based on modern information technology. This article uses literature data method, questionnaire survey method, mathematical statistics method, logical analysis method and other research methods to conduct on-the-spot survey questionnaires for students of a certain university in this city, and organize, classify and study the collected data accordingly. The research results of the predecessors are summarized and summarized to lay a solid theoretical foundation for this research. This article relies on modern information technology to establish an online English education platform to comprehensively improve students' English learning ability and performance level, test the system, and test the students' performance. From the analysis of test results, it can be seen that the pass rate of the experimental class is 100%, and the excellent rate can reach 26%. Through the use of the online English education platform, the experimental class has greatly improved the excellence rate, average score and pass rate, and the differences are obvious.

Abstract:With the development of Internet technology, teachers are constantly seeking innovative methods to match the potential enhancement of technology. Although many studies have been done before, these are not enough in this field. The purpose of this article is to explore innovative designs to change traditional instruction mode and test its impact. The case was carried out in English as a Second Language (ESL), classroom of NO.9 middle school of Bengbu, an underdeveloped area of China. We compared online instruction with traditional textbook literature methods to improve the reading skills of students; a questionnaire survey designed specifically for this study was conducted at the end of semester; and the collected data were processed. The findings of this study indicated that online instruction is effective, students have gained more knowledge and information through Internet than before, it helped them to improve reading skills, arouse students’ interest and motivation in learning, exam results of students have been improved significantly, and it created a positive learning situation.

Abstract:Tertiary institutions are increasingly providing Web‐based courses to learners both on‐campus and off‐campus, enabling more students to take these courses and get the most recent information. Students can also learn more interactively with the new types of instruction methods used online. Synchronous or asynchronous communication via computer networks can also greatly facilitate the learning process. In order to help the teachers and administrators of the Web‐based learning systems to improve the effectiveness of their instruction and design better online learning software, we have implemented an exploratory investigation of the behaviour of the students in the Web‐based learning environment. Multiple approaches were adopted to collect data, which included questionnaires, posted documents, online logs, interviews and observations. Comparison and analyses are also made between students in different semesters, and under different instruction methods. Some viewpoints on the construction of the Web‐based learning systems are proposed.

Abstract:In order to better adapt to the relevant requirements of blended teaching in colleges and universities under the ecological environment and in the "Internet +" era, the "online + offline" blended teaching mode of college English in the Internet era is innovated to further highlight the subjectivity of students in the process of English learning status. First, this study deeply understands the current situation and problems of College English teaching from the perspective of the Internet by means of a questionnaire survey. On this basis, with the construction of the English teaching concept of "student-centered and teacher-led" as the core, this study puts forward and designs the "online and offline" mixed teaching mode of College English based on the support of mobile network technology. Through the teaching experiment, it is found that the total score of students in the mixed teaching mode is 6 points higher than that before, and the scores for English Cloze, writing, and reading are 2.75 points, 1.3 points, and 1.134 points, respectively. The feasibility and remarkable effect of the mixed teaching mode are verified.

Abstract:The research is aimed at verifying the application effect of the online automatic evaluation system in English translation teaching and at understanding the satisfaction of students with different feedback methods. The research uses three classes of human resource management majors in Xi’an Technological University as the research object and uses questionnaire survey and comparative experiment methods to compare and analyse the three feedback methods: teacher feedback, online automatic feedback, and teacher feedback combined with online automatic feedback. The research answers the following three questions: (1) will the three feedback methods affect students’ English translation performance? (2) Which of the three feedback methods will improve students’ English performance better? (3) What about students’ satisfaction with current feedback methods? The research results show that the significance value between the control group (CG) and the experimental group 1 (EG1) is 0.029, that between CG and the experimental group 2 (EG2) is 0.432, and that between EG1 and EG2 is 0.001. There are obvious differences in the posttest scores of the three groups of students. EG2 has the largest average posttest score, which is 9.8182; there is no obvious difference in posttest translation scores between CG and EG2. It indicates that “teacher feedback + online automatic feedback” and teacher feedback have the equivalent effect on improving students’ translation. The results of the questionnaire survey show that students have the highest degree of recognition of “teacher feedback + online automatic feedback.” The research is helpful for teachers to better understand the shortcomings in the translation teaching process, so that they can take effective measures against these problems in the follow-up teaching process to improve their teaching effect.

Abstract:With the development of the network, online education has entered thousands of households, and the access to online education is also very simple. Due to the continuous development of online education, a variety of online examination systems with various characteristics have been derived. Considering the simplicity and convenience of the system and the stability of performance, we have developed an online examination system using SSM framework under B/S architecture, which can detect students 'learning status through online examination and automatic marking. And automatically analyze the error rate of each problem and the weakness of each student, so that the teacher can explain such exercises. It also contains the basic information of the student, such as the mobile phone number of the student's parents. If the student is found not to complete the examination, the teacher will also call the student's parents to remind them, and can also communicate with the student's parents appropriately. For the management of the test questions can be taken excel document import. Thus, it can greatly improve the generation of test papers compared with the traditional paper examination. In terms of the types of questions in the online examination system, we only set single choice, multiple choice and judgment questions in the system, set the passing score, set the time of the examination, and also count the number of people who have passed the examination, and provide the correct answer after the examination for students to think. There is also a progress display on the right side of the answer sheet. After each question was answered, the color of the question number on the answer sheet changed. There's also a timing system on the right.

Abstract:With the development of computer science and technology, online education is gradually accepted by more and more users, and has become one of the main teaching methods in schools under the influence of the epidemic in recent years. In addition, online vocational education or higher education has also captured the psychology of national learning, and online tutoring has gradually entered into nonstudent groups such as office workers. Although online education has the advantages of low cost and no limitation of time and space, it also has some problems, such as low classroom satisfaction, delayed feedback from students, and poor teaching effect. Therefore, this paper aims at this problem by combining the development background of foreign intelligent answer system and self-test system, and introducing it into our computer application, using artificial intelligence for natural language processing, aiming at online teaching students cannot get timely answer, and self-test questions intelligent system design. The final experimental results show that the system effectively alleviates the problems of students' delay in answering questions and poor self-test effect, and increases the satisfaction of online classroom by 13%.

Abstract:The English teaching network system uses the Internet to provide distance education. There are several challenges in teaching, including a lack of knowledge and expertise, expectations from students, lack of facilities, and unfavourable opinions about the process of English teaching and learning. In the era of information, education combines the advantages of both online and offline learning, including conventional and networked learning. The production of test pattern paper is an important part of the English teaching network since it helps students study independently. In this study, the artificial intelligence-based English network teaching (AI-ENT) method has been suggested to enhance the student's performance in distance education. There are strong indicators that the methods of teaching and learning and the teaching tools used by machine learning can be fundamentally altered by AI. With AI technology tools and teacher coaching, students can make significant progress in their English learning experiences. Artificial intelligence expert system thinking is reflected in this design. Teachers and students can improve their English proficiency by gaining access to relevant data from a wide range of sources. The system's test application reveals that it can assist students in increasing their learning efficiency and making learning information more relevant.

Abstract:With most switching to distance education due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19, the efficacity of assessment is a major concern. The research was aimed to analyze how Moodle learning management system (LMS) can be applied to online language testing, study the effectiveness of online testing and compare the students’ and teachers’ attitude towards online testing in General English university course. Online tests were administrated as a synchronous component of the distance learning to 857 first-year bachelor’s degree students of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” (Ukraine) by 20 teachers during the 2020-2021 academic year. A mixed research design was employed, which involved collecting data using an online questionnaire completed by students and teachers anonymously as Microsoft Forms; Excel spreadsheets were used for the analysis afterward. A quantitative descriptive study was conducted to evaluate the students’ and teachers’ satisfaction with online testing. The expert evaluation method was prioritized to define the expediency of the effectiveness of the online test by the specified criteria and indicators based on the judgments expressed by 7 experienced teachers who are competent in test design. In addition, Pearson’s correlation coefficient was calculated to compare the results of an online test and oral exam. The qualitative research method allowed to analyse and interpret data of the experimental learning. Based on the results of our study, we can conclude that different types of Moodle LMS questions can be successfully applied to online language testing as part of course assessment at the university level. The paper argues that online language testing can be effective and relevant to course objectives from both students’ and teachers’ perspectives with positive washback on education. The results of the study can be employed by university teachers for language course design both for distance and blended learning.

Abstract:In this paper, a web-based education platform, named Online Teaching Assistant System (OTAS) [1], for Signals and Systems course is presented and experimented. Besides delivering courseware on webpage, this system provides students with numerous online quizzes for enhancing their memory, understanding, and reaction about basic concepts in the mentioned course. We then designed an experiment and tested OTAS in the Spring semester of 2015 by a class of a hundred undergraduate students in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua University. In this experiment, one third of the class composed the test group and the others the control group. The students in test group utilized OTAS for doing quizzes, while in the same period they were enrolled in the "offline" course delivered by the teacher in the classroom, and did homework and project in traditional way, which was exactly the same as those in the control group. After half semester a formal test was set to evaluate the level of knowledge that students learned from this course. Statistical analysis on the test output indicated that introducing online practicing for elementary concepts in Signals and Systems resulted in better academic performance and more positive attitudes toward the subject. Delivery of materials and exercises via OTAS, including from both computers and mobile devices, provides greater access and flexibility for students to practice what they have learnt. Based on this experiment, we claim that the developed OTAS significantly improves the quality of education offered to the students.

Abstract:Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is a new online education form. MOOC aims to provide the advance systematic educations to the public and share the access to the best high educations to Internet users. Although the MOOC platform contained many video lessons of high-quality courses from famous universities around the world, the assessment of students' learning, including testing methods, grading methods and feedback to student, was unsatisfactory according to XuetangX, an xMOOC websites leading by Tsinghua University in China. Setting effective and satisfactory assessment methods to test and grade students' learning performance in MOOC has significant values for all stakeholders including instructors, students and the MOOC platform. An interview study was conducted to understanding the current situation of assessments and the opinions towards different types of assessment methods from both instructors and students. We interviewed five teachers, eight course assistants of different categories of MOOCs in XuetangX, and six students from different MOOC platforms. Some conclusions and suggestions about the assessment on students' learning performance in different categories of MOOCs were drawn in the study. The findings in the study can be referred as guidelines for instructors to design great assessment methods in different MOOCs.

Abstract:People nowadays care more about the source and outcome of English instruction, resulting in an improvement in the quality of English instruction. As a result, the majority of students' reading and writing levels increase steadily, but their listening ability does not, resulting in an extremely unbalanced development of the "listening, reading, and writing" four skills. The use of language in real-world situations is a reflection of human creativity, and the content and tone of the same speaker's speech at different times, places, and occasions can vary significantly. Language usage cannot be separated from its context. This study proposes a hybrid online and offline English speaking teaching method based on modern educational technology. The method transforms offline teaching materials into a suitable context to create a rich and diverse online speaking classroom. This new teaching method constructs a teaching platform with online and offline as the primary subjects, replacing the previous single mode of teacher output and passive student input to form an all-round teaching platform distinguished by systematization, standardization, all-round language training, high intensity, accuracy, and fluency in language output. The experimental results demonstrated that our evaluation results are useful for providing feedback on the quality of teaching and promoting learning outcomes.

Contemporary american literature in Online Learning: fostering Reading Motivation and Student Engagement

Abstract:Reading is one of the crucial aspects of the learning process. The learning efficiency depends on the motivation and involvement of students. The paper aims to determine whether the developed online course enhances student motivation and engagement in contemporary American literature. For this purpose, questionnaires were used. The sample consisted of 126 students enrolled in Yulin Gaoxin Secondary School, who had English proficiency at a high enough level to read English literature in the original language. Before and after the course, the Reading Motivation Questionnaires test was administered, with its scores validated using Student's t-test for dependent samples. Significant progress is observed in the internal and social components of motivation (23-25%), as well as in the Engagement category (31%). The course also positively affected learning effectiveness. None of the participants scored less than half of the possible points for the course assignments. Most children obtained high (95-119 points) and very high scores (120-140 points). This finding demonstrates the suitability of the tools used (videoconferencing, learning management systems, discussion forums, and interactive exercises) in online learning when studying modern literature. The research findings are of interest, first of all, to instructors who adopt technological innovations in their lessons or want to motivate students to read. Second, school administrators and education sector officials can draw information from the findings for corrective action. Third, software developers may be inspired by the data and create new technology solutions.

Abstract:This research integrates online learning supported by students' smart phones and a tutoring system CSIEC into a university course of English as a foreign language, through one semester with 548 students and eight lecturers from 13 classes. The treatment students used the system to learn vocabulary during the specified periods through voluntary participation and natural grouping, while the control students used alternative methods. The online learning activities analysis shows significant difference between the online learning behaviour of the treatment and control group, and demonstrates that the treatment group improved the vocabulary grade with a large effect size and decreased the time spent on completing the quiz. The treatment group improved better than the control group in overall learning, especially in vocabulary mastery and writing examined in regular university tests. The anonymous online survey results reveal that the students were satisfied with the English learning. The reasons leading to the findings are discussed. The implication for MALL research and future work are suggested.
