Abstract:Purpose Helical coil electromagnetic launchers (HEMLs) using motion-induced commutation strategy solve the problem of synchronization control perfectly. HEMLs can meet the requirements of multiple applications such as the electromagnetic catapult, electromagnetic mortar and high-velocity coilgun. The trade-off between the velocity and efficiency is an important basis for these different applications. To optimize such objectives before actual design, the purpose of this paper is to focus on the efficient and flexible calculation model and algorithm. A novel structure of HEML is proposed after the transient simulation by this algorithm, which can improve the energy conversion efficiency and suppress the muzzle arc without affecting the velocity too much. Design/methodology/approach The equivalent circuit model of the launcher is established and the governing equations are derived. A combination of the four-stage Runge–Kutta method and the trapezoidal quadrature formula are used to solve the governing equations. Findings With smaller number of turns in the coils of HEML, the velocity is larger and the efficiency is lower. The non-uniform HEML is an effective option to improve the energy conversion efficiency and to suppress the muzzle arc with almost the same muzzle velocity as the conventional HEML. Originality/value The paper presents a common model and a flexible fast numerical method which can be used in multi-objective optimization of HEMLs such as the genetic algorithm. A new structure of the non-uniform HEML is proposed to improve the energy conversion efficiency and to suppress the muzzle arc of the launcher.

Study Of A Single-Stage Electromagnetic Launcher System Using Pancake Coil

Abstract:A single-stage electromagnetic launcher system using pancake coil is a type of induction launcher that induces an eddy current in a metal projectile by time varying magnetic induction produced by a pancake coil. An active protection element such as armor plat or other terminal ballistics interception device can be launched by this system for the interception and disruption of an incoming round before it strike the armor of a combat vehicle.In order to design this system optimally, a two-dimensional finite element model has been developed, which can calculate the eddy current in the metal projectile and inductance of the system. Thus its inductance gradient for any projectile position can be calculated, and the force on the projectile can be determined.A physical model of a single-stage electromagnetic launcher system using pancake coil has been built in the laboratory. The comparisons between the calculated and measured results show that the proposed model is efficient for optimal design of the system.

Abstract:The axial acceleration force of the conventional coil electromagnetic launcher is much less than the radial compression force. This paper presents a novel multipole field electromagnetic launcher based on the interaction of radial magnetic field and loop eddy current. The operation principle and conception model are introduced. The electromagnetic acceleration forces of eddy-current catapult and induction acceleration are analyzed. Based on the current filament method, the system dynamic equations are established. By electromagnetic field finite element analysis coupling with circuit, the transient launch process of single stage of octupole field coil electromagnetic launcher is simulated. The experiment results of the principle prototype indicate that the multipole field coil electromagnetic launcher is feasible.

Abstract:This paper discusses the application of superconducting inductive pulsed power supplies in electromagnetic launchers by presenting a dynamic model. In this model, the load of the pulsed power supply is a rail-type electromagnetic launcher. This is different from many dynamic models in the literature, where the load is a resistor. A prototype launcher and a superconducting inductive pulsed power supply were designed. Finite-element analysis was carried out to obtain parameters for the launcher, and analytic-numerical methods were used to obtain parameters for the power supply. The simulation results indicate that the superconducting inductive pulsed power supply is suitable for driving the launcher, provided that the voltage across the primary winding of the power supply is high enough. The results also show that there exists an optimal number of turns in the secondary winding to maximize the launch efficiency.

Abstract:In order to improve the compactness of coil launchers and eliminate the limitation that the size of the launching projectile in the sleeve structure must be smaller than the driving coil, three flat coil electromagnetic emission systems, namely aluminum plate armature system (APAS), induction coil armature system (ICAS), and direct-fed armature system (DFAS), are proposed for low-mass launch. Based on the physical structure of the launcher, finite element models and mathematical models of three systems were established. The circuit characteristics, motion characteristics, electromagnetic characteristics, and mechanical characteristics of the three systems were solved using the finite element analysis method, and the accuracy of the finite element method was verified by numerical analysis results. The data showed that the DFAS has a low current characteristic with a peak current of 21.1 kA, while the DFAS and APAS have energy conversion efficiency of 29.7% and 24.4%. APAS has good electromagnetic protection capability, with a magnetic induction intensity above its armature not exceeding 0.008 t within 0.4 ms. The stress in most areas of the armature and drive coil of the three systems is less than 42.54 MPa. The results showed that the DFAS and APAS have certain engineering application prospects, while the ICAS is not conducive to engineering applications.

Coupling Nonlinear Dynamic Finite Element Model of Giant Magnetostrictive Actuator

Abstract:The giant magnetostrictive actuator works at high frequency, and then the loss of giant magnetostrictive actuator includes magnetic hysteresis loss, eddy currency loss, and excess eddy current loss of actuator loop. The coupling between four fields (i.e., magnetic field, electric field, thermal field and mechanical stress field) is occurred at the actuator. Considering the mass of Terfenol-D rod, pre-stress, biased field, the loss of magnetic hysteresis and eddy current, a 3-D nonlinear dynamic model of GMA was established based on the coupled relationship of the three fields (magnetic field, electric field and mechanical stress field). The magnetic behavior was described by the Berqvist and Engdahl stress dependent magnetic hysteresis model for ferromagnetic hysteresis. The simulation results with commercial software FEMLAB were in agreement well with the experimental data. Therefore, the model constructed is valid, and it can help to optimize design of the GMA.

Abstract:In this paper, a superconducting augmented rail-type electromagnetic launch system (SAREML) is proposed due to its inherent advantages in terms of lower current, smaller rail ablation, higher propulsive force, and higher energy efficiency. A superconducting coil to enhance the magnetic field was designed and analyzed. The inductance was calculated using the finite element method. Then, the mathematic model of a superconducting augmented linear propulsion system was established. The MAT-LAB/Simulink model was built accordingly. The dynamic simulations were carried out. The results demonstrated that a SAREML with superconducting augmentation is more effective.

Abstract:To accurately describe the dynamic inductance gradient during the operation process of the series enhanced four-rail electromagnetic rail launcher, an equivalent geometric model based on skin depth is constructed. The influence of armature motion on current diffusion in the rail is considered, and the velocity skin effect is derived. Combined with Biot-Savart Law, an analytical calculation method for dynamic inductance gradient is proposed, and an experimental platform for the series-enhanced four-rail electromagnetic launcher is built, Calculate the dynamic inductance gradient of the experimental device and compare it with the eddy current field simulation calculation, demonstrating the correctness of the proposed analytical method for calculating the dynamic inductance gradient. Analyze the influence of armature motion on the system inductance gradient, and obtain that the initial velocity of armature launching is small, and the distribution of rail current is affected by the current skin effect and related to the current frequency. As the armature velocity increases, the distribution of current in the middle section of armature launching is affected by the velocity skin effect, The skin depth decreases and the dynamic inductance gradient decreases. As the armature speed increases, the dynamic inductance gradient gradually decreases and tends to stabilize in the accelerated stage of armature launching.

Abstract:A model is developed to investigate the commutation process of a helical coil electromagnetic launcher (HCEML) structure. When the armature moves, the motion of the projectile coils’ magnetic energy would supply reactive power to move the leakage into and out of the coil windings of the launcher to accomplish the commutation. The energy conversion of the coil electromagnetic launcher can be considered as the process of energy transfer from the back commutation coils to the excited coils and then from the excited turns to the front commutation coils. In this paper, governing equations of the commutation were deduced theoretically, and finite-element model of HCEML was established in ANSOFT MAXWELL. Then a deeper circuit investigation into the overall performance of commutation was carried out by means of PSPICE software. The validity of the theoretical analysis and that of the circuit network model were finally verified by experiments. The results show that during the commutation process, the current of back commutation coils drops to zero with no energy remaining in the internal; the current of front commutation coils and drive–projectile coil system gradually changes to a stable value, which is related to the geometric parameters of the launcher; the drive–projectile coil system releases energy overall that is mainly used to increase the kinetic energy of the projectile; the power supply system has little effect on energy conversion and transformation at the commutating moment and just keeps the voltage and current from decaying due to the impedance and inductance of the launcher system.

Design And Test Of A Hypervelocity Electromagnetic Launcher

Abstract:A hypervelocity electromagnetic (EM) launch system is designed and employed to observe the special phenomenon when the projectile velocity is more than 3km/s. The whole launch system consisted of a 9MJ capacitive pulse power supply (PPS) and railgun device. The capacitive PPS is composed of 180 pulse forming units (PFU). Each PFU has a compact capacitor (1mF/10kV), a pulse shaping inductor (20 mu H), a crowbar diode and thyristor switch. The whole length of railgun is 5.5m, and with a travel length of 5.3m. Test results show that the PPS can afford a pulse current, which the peak current and full width at half maximum (FWHM) is more than 500kA and 4ms, respectively. The EML device can accelerate a 181.0g projectile to 3550.0m/s muzzle velocity when the input energy is 3.5MJ. And the whole system launch efficiency is nearly 32.0%.

Abstract:This paper, based on the finite element computation by using a dynamic model coupled with the equations of external electric circuits, analyzes the transient magnetic field distribution and the corresponding engineering parameters of EMS maglev vehicle. To avoid the airgap mesh distortion caused by the movement of the rotor, moving boundaries are introduced in the airgap. Finally, an example is given to check the engineering feasibility and correctness.

Abstract:Linear propulsion systems usually require currents up to several mega amperes to achieve reasonably high accelerating forces and propulsion speeds, unless high magnetic fields can be established. The high magnetic fields can be provided externally, such as superconducting augmentation. C. G. Homan published several papers in regard to such systems, but the models were relatively simple. This paper presents an improved model of a superconducting augmented linear propulsion system. A dynamic simulation was carried out. The results show that superconducting augmentation is effective for the linear propulsion system.

Abstract:To enhance the thrust force density and move a part of copper loss from the primary to the secondary of linear switched flux permanent magnet machines (LSFPMMs), this paper proposes a novel kind of doubly-fed LSFPMMs (DFLSFPMMs) by adding another set of armature winding on the secondary of LSFPMMs. The design and working principles of the new winding are analyzed first. It is found that the optimal coil pitch depends on the primary structure. Then, the parameters of DFLSFPMMs with U-core, C-core, E-core, and multi-tooth primary structures are globally optimized, and their electromagnetic performances are investigated by 2D finite element method. The result shows that the average thrust force of U-core DFLSFPMM is 30% higher than that of conventional LSFPMM counterpart, and it is also 23%-29% higher than those of DFLSFPMMs with other three primary structures. Besides, the U-core machine with tubular structure is analyzed for the potential application of electromagnetic shock absorbers, which shows the U-core DFLSFPMM has 10% higher peak-to-peak damping force than linear spoken-type PM machine. Finally, a prototype of U-core DFLSFPMM is manufactured and tested to validate the analysis.

Abstract:Electromagnetic propulsion technology is a new propulsion technology which uses electromagnetic force to push objects into high or ultra-high speed. However, during propulsion, the armature and launch load are affected by harsh multi-physics environment. The coupled effect was often ignored or over idealized in previous numerical simulations, which leads to large errors between simulation and experiment. In this paper, a three-dimensional multi-physics coupling environment simulation model is established. The distribution of electromagnetic field, structure field and temperature field in armature from static to high speed are effectively calculated. Moreover, the coupled effect between physical fields and the influence of key parameters on the simulation results are revealed. In conclusion, this model can reproduce the physical field distribution of armature and rail during electromagnetic propulsion. The time-varying resistance and inductance and the velocity skin effect (VSE) are the key parameters affecting armature movement. This method reveals a feasible path for the simplification of multi-physical model and the mitigation of extreme environment.

Abstract:Many electro-mechanical motional systems include parts that can move relative to the others. EMS-Maglev system is one of the examples, which combines the devices for propulsion, levitation and on-board electric power transfer in a single electromagnetic structure. The analysis of its mechanical dynamic characteristics is very important for the design of the configuration and the control system. Because of the complexity of the time-varying magnetic configuration, analytical method can hardly obtain the dynamic performance. Therefore, analysis of the electromagnetic field is necessary. Moreover, with ordinarily transient finite element method, it is also difficult to consider the external power supply of linear synchronous motors and the working status of linear generator. In this paper, a modified transient finite element algorithm for the performance analysis of magnetically levitated vehicles of electromagnetic type is presented. The algorithm incorporates external power system and vehicles movement equations into FE model of transient magnetic field computation directly. Sliding interface between stationary and moving region is used during the transient analysis. The periodic boundaries are implemented in an easy way to reduce the computation scale. Unfortunately, this directly coupled FE analysis is very time-consuming. To overcome this problem, a fast solving technique for the mechanical dynamic characteristic of electromechanical motional systems is also proposed in this paper. Based on a sequence of finite element analysis, and a set of equivalent electrical circuit parameters extracted, the method incorporates electrical equation and vehicles movement equation into state equations. It is proved that this method can be used for both electromotional static and dynamic cases. Through test of a transformer and an EMS-MAGLEV system, it reveals that the method gives reasonable results at very low computational costs comparing with transient finite element analysis.

Abstract:According to the characteristics of an actual electromagnetic rail launcher (EMRL), this article points out defects in the traditional dynamic response model of EMRL, proposes an improved dynamic response model, and analyzes its dynamic and stopping response characteristics. On this basis, it presents a fast and accurate numerical calculation method for three-dimensional transient electromagnetic (EM) force of the EMRL and an order-reduced model of EMRL dynamic response. Furthermore, the second development of commercial software leads to the establishment of an interior ballistic simulation model with EM-structural coupling. The model is used to analyze the interior ballistic characteristics of the EMRL under sequential discharge and continuous firing. The finding is that the dynamic response of the first launching rail will cause a deformation in the second launching rail, in which a greater fluctuation happens. When the time interval between successive launches reaches 1.0s, the deformation of the second launching rail will no longer be affected by the dynamic response of the first launching rail.

Abstract:The turns of driving coil may affect the equivalent inductance of discharge circuit, as well as the waveform of discharge current. As speeding up of the armature in multi-stage coil launcher, the turns of driving coil should change accordingly in order to get optimal launching efficiency. It analyzed the relation of driving coil turns and launching efficiency based on the equation of force on the armature, and then the matching characteristics of the driving coil turns and the armature velocity by the numerical simulation. Some conclusions are obtained such as that there exists an optimal turn of driving coil for every armature velocity, and the number of turns should reduce as the increase of armature velocity.

Abstract:Analyzing the core drive system and the particularity of electromagnetic catapult, the authors propose a new drive method for catapult, a double-sided linear induction motor with constant frequency and varying pole pitch. Based on the technical requirement of catapult index, the equivalent circuit of a long primary double-sided linear induction motor, and the electromagnetic thrust equations, the authors establish a finite element simulation model to analyze the effect of pole pitch, length of the secondary, coil turns, current frequency on electromagnetic thrust output, and validate the superiority of the proposed drive system. Structure parameters, as well as application of the double-sided linear induction motor with varying pole pitch is provided and discussed.
